  • Local baseball well represented at Perfect Game 17U WWBA

    The largest of the Perfect Game USA summer tournaments began Friday at 51 locations in and around the metro area with the start of the 17U World Wood Bat Association National Championship (2019 Grads). The tournament, which includes 392 teams, continues through Friday July 6. The teams are divided into 49 pools of eight teams each. All teams will play the seven teams in their pool with only the pool champions advancing to a single-elimination bracket that begins Wednesday, July 4. The tournament bracket continues on July 5 with the semifinals and championship game on July 6. At least 33 local players are participating on a variety teams entered in the tournament. Games are headquartered on the eight fields of Perfect Game Park at LakePoint in Emerson, with other Bartow County locations in use. Those fields include Richard Bell Field in Atco, Cass High School, Joe Cowan Park in Euharlee, Perry Park on Grassdale Road, and Woodland High School. Local player | School | Travel team

  • Glaze takes reins as Cass boys basketball coach

    Sean Glaze, a 25-year veteran as a teacher and basketball coach, has been hired as the new Cass High School boys basketball coach. Glaze, who was most recently the head girls basketball coach at Kell High School, arrives at Cass to take over the vacancy created when David Brock resigned to take the boys’ coaching position at Dalton High School. Glaze led the Kell girls to a 46-40 mark over the past three seasons and reached the state playoffs each year. He also previously served as the boys head coach at Woodstock High School. The Cass boys were 17-12 last season and qualified for the Class AAAAA state playoffs before falling in the opening round at Buford. Glaze will have starters Ethan Carter and Justice Hayes returning for the Colonels and will have the opportunity to coach his own son Andrew who will be a sophomore.   • Cartersville Little League 12U wins District 1 championship

    Cartersville Little League 12U captured the Georgia Little League District 1 championship Wednesday night by cruising to a 16-1 victory over Rockmart Little League at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville went unbeaten in three games during the three-team, double-elimination tournament and advances to the Georgia Little League State Tournament that begins July 14 at Smyrna Little League. Following a scoreless first inning Wednesday night, Cartersville scored seven runs in the second, five in the third, and four more times in the top of the fourth inning to close out their win in only four innings. Rockmart scored its only run in the third inning. Miles Owen (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB, 10K) pitched all four frames for Cartersville to pick up the win. He needed only 57 pitches (41 for strikes) and fanned ten of the 18 batters he faced. Connor Brasfield put Cartersville on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run in the second. The locals then took advantage of three walks, a pair of singles, a double, and an error to bat around and post six more runs in the frame. Three more singles, a hit batsman, and a walk in the third inning led to five Cartersville runs and they put four hits and a sacrifice fly together in the fourth inning to reach their 16 run total. Four Cartersville hitters had two hits each. Owen had two hits and two RBI. Brasfield had an RBI single to go with his solo home run. Connor Stermer had two hits including a double and one RBI. Turner Abernathy also contributed a pair of hits. Aiden Ray finished with a double and three RBI. Caleb Daniel added two RBI and one hit. Geoffrey Gore had one hit and one RBI. Grant Knight added a hit and Sawyer Wilson drove in one run for Cartersville.   • 8U youth basketball team wins Teammate Basketball national tourney

    The Georgia Grizzlies 8U basketball team based out of Cartersville captured first place in the Teammate Basketball National Championship this past weekend in Pigeon Forge, TN. The program’s 14U team also placed second in their consolation division of the tournament. The Georgia Grizzlies travel program, coached by Nic Tyler and Emmanuel Holloway, also had a 9U team participating in the tournament. 8U Georgia Grizzlies: Chris McClendon, Davion Smith, Braylon Williams, Kaiden Kent, Maddox Raughton, Lance Trippett, Corbin Mullinax, and Cade Harris.     Results from Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 softball and baseball tournament games played Tuesday. 12U Softball at Alto Park - Rome Bartow County 12U defeated Dalton Tuesday night in the opening round, 11-2. Chelsea Bates tossed a complete-game three hitter for Bartow and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Kylie Perine was also 2-for-3 and Kelsey Gleason drove in a pair of runs with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate.   • Bartow County Little League 12U eliminated at District 1 tourney

    Bartow County Little League 12U baseball made a late charge Tuesday night, but was eliminated from the Georgia Little League District 1 tournament by Rockmart Little League, 5-4 at Hamilton Crossing Park. Down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Bartow County scored twice to narrow the margin to 5-2. The locals then scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and had the potential tying run on third base, but came up just short. Rockmart scored all five runs and had seven of their ten total hits in the top of the third inning. Bartow’s Caden Wade had two hits including a triple and two RBI. Dawson Craig contributed a double. Landon O'Neal and David Jinks had the other hits. Craig (3 IP, 5ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss for Bartow County. David Kelley (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 3K) also pitched. Rockmart, now 1-1 in the double-elimination tournament, plays Cartersville Little League in the championship round starting Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Hamilton Crossing Park.   • Athletes Beyond Bartow: Howard, Justus, and Seigler continue their MiLB journeys

    Former Cartersville High School baseball players continue their journeys in professional baseball as the summer heats up. Anthony Seigler is off to a nice start with his Rookie League Yankees team, pitcher Sam Howard made another start with Albuquerque, and middle infielder Connor Justus returned to the California League. SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (5th yr. pro; LHP; Triple-A Pacific Coast League; Colorado Rockies organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… went four and two-thirds innings in a no-decision start Friday as the Isotopes went on to win at Fresno 7-5. Howard allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He fanned three. He left the game in fifth inning with his team leading 6-4. Howard has a 3-4 record in 11 starts this season for Albuquerque. He has 39 strikeouts in 51 innings and a 5.47 ERA. CONNOR JUSTUS — Inland Empire 66ers (3rd yr. pro; MIF; Adv. Class A California League; L.A. Angels organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… after completing the first half of the 2018 season with the Double-A Mobile BayBears of the Southern League, Justus was sent back to the Advanced Class A Inland Empire 66ers of the California League on June 22. In 57 games at AA, he hit .186 with 13 RBI and had an on-base percentage of .313. In his first three games with Inland Empire, Justus has gone 2-for-9 with a pair of walks, three runs, and a stolen base in games at the Lancaster JetHawks. The 66ers are 2-2 in the South Division second half standings and have a four-game home series against Visalia starting Monday followed by a five-game set at Rancho Cucamonga that starts Friday night. ANTHONY SEIGLER — GCL Yankees West (1st yr. pro; C; Rookie Gulf Coast League; NY Yankees organization; Cartersville HS)… in his first two professional starts, Seigler is 2-for-4 with one double, one RBI, two runs scored and a pair of walks. The switch-hitting catcher batted fifth in the order against Phillies East in his June 18 debut and was slotted second in the batting order last Friday in a start against the GCL Braves. GCL Yankees West (2-2) are currently in third place in the five-team Northwest Division.

  • Cartersville Little League 12U advances to District 1 championship round

    Cartersville Little League 12U baseball advanced to the championship round of the Georgia Little League District 1 tournament Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout of Rockmart Little League at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville now awaits the survivor of an elimination game Monday night at 6:30 p.m. between Bartow County and Rockmart in the double-elimination tournament. Monday’s winner will need to defeat Cartersville twice to take the district championship. Cartersville, on the other hand, is now just one win away from advancing to the Georgia Little League State Tournament. The first championship round game will be Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. If a second championship round game is needed, it is scheduled for Wednesday night. Sunday afternoon, Cartersville pitchers Sawyer Wilson (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 6K) and Gavin Shrewsbury (3.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) combined on a three-hit shutout and fanned seven. Rockmart only had one baserunner to reach second base and that occurred in the final inning. All three Rockmart hits were singles. Miles Owen had three of Cartersville’s four hits to provide the offensive spark. Owen led off the fourth inning with a double and scored after a pair of wild pitches. In the fifth inning, he added a two-out single to drive in his team’s second run after Easton Elrod walked and Caleb Daniel was hit by a pitch. Cartersville’s other base hits were singles by Owen in the first inning and Shrewsbury in the sixth inning.     Eight local recreation department baseball all-star teams begin Georgia Parks & Recreation Association District 5 tournament play this week in four different divisions. GRPA District 5 8U Coach Pitch Baseball Westside Park - Whitfield County Bartow County Parks & Recreation Department has three teams entered in the 8U district coach pitch tournament. Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department has one team in the event. Bartow 7-year-olds and Cartersville begin tournament play against one another Monday night at 6:15 p.m. on Field 4. Bartow White plays host Whitfield County at 6:15 p.m. on Field 1. Bartow Blue plays Gordon County in an opening round game Monday at 8:15 p.m. on Field 1. Calhoun and Rome are also in the double-elimination tournament that continues through Friday. An ‘if needed’ game would occur Monday, July 2.
