  • Woodland wins twice on Saturday

    March 1, 2025 The Woodland Wildcats baseball team secured two victories on Saturday in Spring Garden, Alabama games. WOODLAND 14, SPRING GARDEN (AL) 0 In the first of two games on Saturday for Woodland in Alabama, the Wildcats and Spring Garden remained scoreless through the first three innings. However, Woodland peppered the Panthers for 14 runs over the final four innings in a 14-0 shutout. With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Wildcats strung together three hits with a Spring Garden infield error to take a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the sixth on two hits and another Panther error. Ahead 4-0, Woodland put the game out of reach with a 10-run top of the seventh inning. Five hits, five walks, and two hit batsmen produced the Wildcats’ big inning. They sent 15 batters to the plate in the frame. Kallen Reynolds (3.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 4BB, 3K) and Lucas Baker (3.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) earned the pitching win and save, respectively. Preston Sorrells went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI to lead Woodland’s offensive attack. One of his three hits was a double. Jake Clowers (two RBI), Ben Turcotte (double), and Tommy Risner (RBI) had two hits. Conner Lujan (triple, RBI), Tucker James (two RBi), Sammy Ray (RBI), Alfredo Romo, and Baker added one hit. Steven Tumlin and Jacob Tatum had one RBI. WOODLAND 2, CHEROKEE CO. (AL) 1 The Woodland Wildcats made it a three-game season sweep of the Cherokee County Warriors of Centre, Alabama, on Saturday, but it took extra innings. The game was played at Spring Garden. Woodland took advantage of two walks to begin the top of the second inning when Jake Clowers drove in a run with a single into center field. That 1-0 lead held for the Wildcats until Cherokee pushed across a tying run in the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the eighth inning, Lucas Baker led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and moved to third on an infield error.  Baker then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Christian Duran (3 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2K) worked a clean bottom of the eighth on the mound for the Wildcats to close the game and collect the win. Austin Daves (5 IP, 0R, 4H, 0BB, 7K) made the pitching start for Woodland and received no decision. Seven Wildcats had one hit each, including Clowers (RBI), Baker, Alfredo Romo, Conner Lujan, Ben Turcotte, Tommy Risner, and Jonathan Ryan. The loss left Cherokee with a 4-6 record. Woodland (5-2) hosts Cedartown on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to begin a three-game Region 7-AAAA series that will continue with a doubleheader on Friday.

  • Late rally comes up short for the Hurricanes

    March 1, 2025 Tristan McKibben The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes’ comeback efforts came up just short Saturday in a 9-7 loss to the Mountain Brook (AL) Spartans. The PG High School Showdown consolation game was Cartersville’s fourth game of the weekend. The Canes were 1-3 in the elite high school tournament. Their win was over Brandon High School, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 7A in Mississippi. In the loss to Mountain Brook, the Canes trailed 8-1 through four innings. Cartersville rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and added single runs in the final two frames. The Spartans broke open a 1-1 game in the bottom of the second inning and did most of their damage with two outs. A flyout and a strikeout followed a leadoff double, but then Mountain Brook coaxed six walks and added an infield single to go ahead 6-1. Logan Shrewsbury (1.2 IP, 6ER, 3H, 5BB, 4K) started on the mound for Cartersville and was saddled with the pitching loss. Cooper Reynolds (0.0 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB), Davis Waddell (2.1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 5K), and Brayden Logan (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1K) also pitched for the Hurricanes. David Vargas (two RBi) and Andrew Purdy (RBI) finished with two hits against the Spartans. Cameron Cochran (RBI), Cole Crawford (RBI), Logan (RBI), Tristan McKibben, Thomas Peters, Julez Pratt, and Ben Cagle added one hit. Hunter Davis went 3-for-3 with one RBI and Sam Estes drove in three runs to lead the Mountain Brook offense. The Spartans improved to 6-3. Cartersville (4-5) opens play in Region 7-AAAA at Allatoona on Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series. The Canes will host a doubleheader with the Buccaneers on Friday.

  • February 2025 Elite Athletes of the Month

Each month, local high schools name an Elite Athlete of the Month from their varsity programs and present the information on their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3FM and AM1450, WBHF in Cartersville. Lucas Baker represents Woodland High School as the February Elite Athlete of the Month. Baker, a senior pitcher and third baseman on the Wildcats’ baseball team, started the 2025 campaign with a .429 batting average. He is 1-0 on the mound and recently signed to continue his education and baseball career at Albany State University. “Lucas works extremely hard,” said Wildcats head coach Mark Collins. “He has been elected captain by his teammates.” He is the son of Joe and Dona Baker. Peyton Bowen is the February Elite Athlete of the Month for Adairsville High School. A senior outfielder on the Tigers’ baseball team, Bowen has started the season with a .405 batting average. “Peyton Bowen is a hard-working young man and always leads by example,” said Adairsville head baseball coach Billy Roper. “He is quiet, but he plays the game the right way. I can always count on him to do what is right and best for the team.” The son of Mark and Carla Bowen, he has a 4.0 grade point average in the Adairsville High School Magnet Program. He plans to attend the University of North Georgia to major in Nursing. Talan Nix represents Cartersville High School as the February Elite Athlete of the Month. He is a three-time state placer for the Canes’ wrestling team, having placed fifth, fifth, and third the past three seasons in his weight division. “Talan is a great example of an elite athlete. He excels on and off the mat. His continued success in the classroom and wrestling directly results from the hard work he pours into everything he does. He finished strong with an outstanding senior season,” said Cartersville wrestling coach Sammy Rosario. The son of Leslie and Kevin Nix, Talan has a 4.7 weighted GPA and 4.0 unweighted. He was selected Most Outstanding Congressman at the Georgia State Youth Assembly in 2024. He is a Georgia Merit Scholar, Mu Alpha Theta Scholar, Junior Marshall, Scholar Athlete for Wrestling, Advanced Placement Scholar with Honors, Georgia Certificate of Merit winner, National Honor Society member, and was nominated for the Governor’s Honors Program in mathematics. Nix plans to attend the University of Georgia to study Engineering. Darianna Sosa is the February Elite Athlete of the Month for Cass High School. Sosa is a standout member of the Lady Colonels’ softball, basketball, and tennis teams. A 5-8 guard, Sosa concluded the recent basketball season as the team’s second-leading scorer and helped the team reach the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs.  As a shortstop and leadoff hitter for the softball team, she led the Lady Colonels as they also reached the Class AAAA state playoffs. She is the daughter of Sebastian and Brenda Sosa and plans to attend Fort Valley State University on an athletic scholarship for softball.   • Woodland teams split soccer tilts with Calhoun

    March 1, 2025 The Woodland boys’ soccer team edged Calhoun on penalty kicks Friday night, but the Lady Cats fell to the visiting Yellow Jackets on penalty kicks. In the girls’ match, the two teams battled to a scoreless draw in regulation before Calhoun won in the penalty kicks shootout. The Lady Jackets converted four PKs and the Lady Cats made three. The Woodland boys’ team trailed 1-0 when Danny Chavez finished on a goal assisted by Aiden Carrillo in the 21st minute. The teams fought scoreless for the remainder of the half. In the 43rd minute, Carrillo gave the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage with a penalty kick but the Yellow Jackets managed the equalizer in the 60th minute.  Tied 2-2, the game went to a penalty kick session where Calhoun missed high on one of their shots. Deiby Sanchez, Luis Olvera Sanchez, Hunter Limbaugh, Marvin Morales, and Chavez were successful for the Wildcats to earn the victory. Woodland goalkeeper Pedro Montalvo had eight saves in regulation. The Wildcats (2-2) and the Lady Cats (1-3) travel to Cedartown on Tuesday to begin play in Region 7-AAAA.

  • Canes split Friday games at PG Showdown

    March 1, 2025 Casen Cochran drove in two runs in the Hurricanes' win over the Brandon Bulldogs. Cartersville High baseball scored six runs in the first two innings on Friday afternoon and defeated Brandon (MS) 6-2 in a consolation game at the Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover, Alabama. The Bulldogs are the No. 1-ranked Class 7A team in The Magnolia State. Cameron Cochran drove in the Canes’ first run with a single in the bottom of the first inning and Casen Cochran grounded out to second base to force home a second Cartersville run. The Hurricanes added four more runs in the second inning on three hits, a walk, and a Bulldogs’ error. Nate Russell picked up the pitching win for Cartersville in a five-inning start. He scattered four hits and two walks while striking out four. Nolan Elrod allowed two earned runs in the sixth inning. Elrod allowed three hits and had one strikeout. Cameron Cochran (RBI) and Brayden Logan had two hits in the contest. Casen Cochran (two RBI), Tristan McKibben, Andrew Purdy, Julez Pratt, and Thomas Peters added one hit for the Canes. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to a 5-4 record. ETOWAH (AL) 6, CARTERSVILLE 4 In the Canes second consolation game of the day on Friday, Cartersville dropped a 6-4 decision to the Etowah Blue Devils of Attalla, Alabama. Both teams plated two runs in the first inning but the Blue Devils added single runs in the second, third, fifth, and seventh innings to build a 6-2 advantage. Cartersville scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough. Two Etowah pitchers — Broc Billingsley and Baylor Morrison — combined for ten strikeouts. Four Hurricanes pitched in the loss including Davis Waddell (1.2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K), Cooper Reynolds (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 2K), Maddox Frazier (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K), and Andrew Purdy (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K). Purdy had two doubles at the plate to go with two walks and one RBI. Avery Shiflett (RBI), Brayden Logan (RBI), David Vargas, and Tristan McKibben (double) added one hit for the Canes. The Blue Devils improved to 5-4, Cartersville (4-4) will wrap up the trip to Hoover with a 2 p.m. (CST) consolation game on Saturday against Mountain Brook (AL) on the Spartans’ home field.

  • Generals edge Cartersville teams on penalty kicks

    February 27, 2025 The Cartersville girls' and boys' soccer teams dropped shootout decisions in Ringgold on Thursday night to the Heritage-Catoosa Generals. The Lady Canes went to the shootout session after a 2-2 draw in regulation. The Hurricanes and Generals went to the penalty kick period following a 1-1 regulation draw. Teams from different classifications do not play the two overtime periods. Instead, they go directly to a shootout to decide the outcome. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 1, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1 (PKs) The Cartersville boys’ soccer team battled Heritage-Catoosa to a 1-1 draw in regulation but lost the game on penalty kicks in Ringgold. The Canes led 1-0 for most of the game, but the Generals scored a goal in the 65th minute to knot the score.  Cartersville scored in the 14th minute on a cross from Ed Hernandez to Adair Milian, who tapped it in. Heritage (2-4) made all five penalty kicks in the extra session. Cartersville only converted three. The Hurricanes (1-1) open Region 7-4A action on Tuesday at home against Allatoona. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 2, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 (PKs) The Lady Canes and Lady Generals scored two goals in regulation Thursday night, but Heritage-Catoosa won the match on penalty kicks in Ringgold. Heritage opened the scoring for an early lead, but Cartersville equalized on a penalty kick goal by Kylie McMichael. Mallory Nicklas gave the Lady Canes a 2-1 lead just before the intermission, but the Lady Generals tied the score on a penalty shot that sent the game to halftime tied 2-2. The teams battled scoreless in the second half, but Heritage won the game on shootout penalty kicks. The Lady Generals (3-3) converted four kicks in the shootout period. Cartersville made three. “Layne Callan had a phenomenal game for us in net,” said Cartersville Lady Canes’ coach MaryBeth Popham. “She blocked several shots by the Generals and had some key saves.” The Lady Canes (0-3) will host Allatoona on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

  • Colonels snap skid with decisive win over McEachern

    March 1, 2025 Mason Madrid After dropping three straight, the Cass boys’ soccer team bounced back Friday night with a decisive 6-1 home victory over McEachern at Cochran Stadium. The breakthrough came 30 minutes into the match when Mason Madrid orchestrated a brilliant connection with Melvin Velasquez, who calmly slotted home the opening goal. However, McEachern responded swiftly, leveling the score just 90 seconds later. Undeterred, Cass reclaimed the lead before halftime as Madrid again found Velasquez, sending the team into the break with a 2-1 advantage. The second half belonged entirely to Cass. Just three minutes in, Velasquez returned the favor, setting up Madrid for a composed finish. Moments later, Gavin Mitzak extended the lead, capitalizing on another pinpoint assist from Madrid. With 20 minutes remaining, Velasquez completed his hat trick from the penalty spot, cementing an outstanding individual performance. Mitzak then sealed the one-sided win, finishing off an assist from Velasquez to put an exclamation mark on the night. Much of Cass’s dominance stemmed from their midfield command, where Kayden Pineda, Chris Mederos, and Francisco Martinez controlled the tempo, dictated play, and stifled McEachern’s advances. The loss dropped the Indians to 1-4 on the season. The Colonels (2-3) begin Region 7-AAAA action at home on Tuesday against Southeast Whitfield in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

    March 1, 2025 The Adairsville girls’ and boys’ soccer teams shut out the visiting Murray County Indians on Friday night in Tigers Stadium. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, MURRAY CO. 0 Major David Sexauer collected his 200th win as the Lady Tigers' head coach on Friday night. The Adairsville girls’ soccer team rolled to an 8-0 home victory over Murray County on Friday night, handing head coach David Sexauer his 200th coaching win. The Lady Tigers scored six goals in the first half to take a commanding lead and played the entire roster in the second half. Alexa Damer scored two goals and had two assists in the first half. Ella Edwards also finished with two goals in the opening half. Samantha Gough and Alivia Joslin added first-half goals, while Braylynn Martin contributed three assists. In the second half, Alyssa Lawson scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Lily McCormick added a late goal off an assist from Cadyn Hartline. The Lady Tigers (4-0) play at Gordon Central on Wednesday. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 2, MURRAY CO. 0 The Tigers scored one goal in each half Friday night and kept Murray County off the scoreboard for a 2-0 non-region home victory. Carlos Limones put Adairsville on the board in the 21st minute off an assist from Fletcher Silvers. The 1-0 lead held until late in the second half when Limones found the net again in the 70th minute. Juan Amnesty assisted with the Tigers’ insurance goal. Adairsville goalkeeper Charlie Potter was credited with 20 saves. “It was a complete victory,” said Adairsville coach Jason McGuire following the win. “I’m very proud of the hard work and dedication of the group. The Tigers rallied together and maintained their composure throughout the match.” Adairsville (3-1) returns to the pitch on Wednesday at Gordon Central.

  • GHC baseball wins series opener with Northwest-Shoals CC

    February 28, 2025 Georgia Highlands baseball won an offensive showcase on Friday afternoon over visiting Northwest-Shoals CC, 14-10. The two teams combined for 35 hits, including 17 extra-base hits with five home runs. Ryan Martin homered twice in the Chargers' Friday win over the Northwest-Shoals Patriots. GHC posted five runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but the Patriots responded with four runs in the top of the second and one more in the fourth to knot the score 5-5. Over the next five innings, the Chargers built an 11-6 lead and added three crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to hold off Northwest-Shoals. Four pitchers toiled for Georgia Highlands. Braxton Wade (5.2 IP, 3ER, 7H, 2BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win in middle relief for starter Max Eichenberger (2.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K). Gavin Webster (0.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) and Jackson Greer (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) wrapped up the ninth inning on the mound. Tyler Phillips (home run, double, three RBI) and Ali Banks (double, RBI) had four hits for the Chargers. Ryan Martin (two homers, six RBI). Heath Whitlock (sac fly, two RBI), Caden Marcos (two doubles, RBI), Andrew Bishop (two doubles, RBI), and Grayson Godbee (double) contributed two hits. Wyatt Gatlin added one hit. Georgia Highlands (12-3) and Northwest-Shoals CC (10-4) continue their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

  • Chattanooga State sweeps Chargers

    February 28, 2025 Georgia Highlands College softball lost both games of a home doubleheader on Friday, falling to the Chattanooga State CC Tigers 9-3 and 14-0. Chattanooga State posted four runs across the first two innings of the opener before the Chargers cut the Tigers’ advantage to 5-3 in the fifth. The visitors sealed the game by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the second game, Chattanooga State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and that score remained until the Tigers scored six runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth. Chattanooga State pounded out sixteen hits in Game 2. Abbi Hall had two hits for the Chargers on Friday vs. Chattanooga State. Four GHC pitchers saw action in the circle on Friday. The first game was started by Hayden Joyner (1.1 IP, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K). Maci Andrews (3.1 IP, 9H, 8ER, 2BB, 1K) started the second game. Those two hurlers were charged with pitching losses. Hannah Mounce (4.1 IP, 9H, 8ER, 2BB) and Grace Kendrick (3 IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 1K). Ahmani Green finished with three hits for the Chargers in the doubleheader. Haylee Dishmon, Andrews (two RBI), Athens Hudson (RBI), and Abbi Hall had two hits. Kendrick and Emma Darrow added one hit on the day. Chattanooga State improved to 12-5. Georgia Highlands (18-4) begins conference play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Andrew College in Cuthbert.

  • Hurricanes fall in PG Showdown opener

    February 28, 2025 Thursday night, the Cartersville Hurricanes lost their opening game at the Hoover, Alabama, Perfect Game High School Showdown, falling to the Fairhope (AL) Pirates 4-1. Fairhope scored two runs in the top of the second inning and went ahead 3-0 on Rock Gearhart’s solo home run in the top of the fifth. The Canes pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth by coaxing two walks followed by a two-out RBI single by Brayden Logan. The Pirates added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and improved their season record to 4-2. The Hurricanes had their opportunities but were 1-for-12, with runners in scoring positions. Logan finished with two hits for the Canes, including one RBI. Julez Pratt, Cole Crawford, and Andrew Purdy (double) had the other Cartersville hits. Avery Shiflett (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) made the pitching start for the Canes and was tagged with the loss. Logan Shrewsbury (2 IP, 0R, 2BB, 5K), Maddox Frazier (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K), and Nolan Elrod (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB) pitched in relief. Cartersville (3-3) plays Brandon (MS) at 3 p.m. (CST) and Etowah (AL) at 6 p.m. (CST) on Friday at Spain Park in consolation games. The Canes will play Mountain Brook (AL) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CST) at Mountain Brook High School.
