Cass lost a pair of hard-fought games at Pepperell Saturday 4-2 and 6-5. The Dragons broke open a 2-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener and overcame a 5-0 Cass lead through five and one-half innings to win the second game. PEPPERELL 4, CASS 2 Pepperell took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Cass knotted the score with two of their own in the top of the fourth. Singles by Evan Hinton and Steven Spell plus a walk to Nathan Smith loaded the bases for the Colonels in the fourth. One run scored on a ground ball double play and Blaine Ingram delivered an RBI single to tie the score 2-2. The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Pepperell utilized two singles and three walks to take the lead and retired Cass in the next frame for the win. Bryson Markley, Thomas Botts (double), and Spell (double) had two hits each for Cass. Hinton and Ingram had the other Colonels’ base hits. PEPPERELL 6, CASS 5 In Game 2, Pepperell overcame a 5-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to win in walk-off fashion. Steven Spell pitched five shutout innings as the Colonels’ starter. He allowed two hits and a walk and fanned three. Clay Means allowed a pair of unearned runs and one hit in relief. Will Parris was touched for two earned runs on a hit and two walks in the seventh and Logan Nelson was responsible for the final two runs on three hits and a walk. Clay Means (double,2 RBI), Bryson Markley, Nathan Smith, Blaine Ingram, and Nelson had one hit each for Cass. Evan Hinton and Spell each had one RBI. Cass (2-4) plays at Sprayberry Monday at 5:55 p.m., at Rockmart Thursday, and will host Dalton Saturday.

The Cartersville baseball team won a pair of games Saturday at Richard Bell Field, defeating Rome 4-1 and Sequoyah 7-2. Cartersville fell behind early in the opener, but responded with a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Rome Wolves. Rome took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a walk and a pair of hits. Connor Bullard drove in Sevie Andrews with a single into left field. Cartersville had five consective batters to reach base to open the bottom of the fifth. Ian Inaba, LaDarius Winburn, and Preston Welchel singled in that stretch while J.P. Martin walked and Anthony Seigler was hit by a pitch. Mason Barnett forced in a run with a bases loaded walk and Jordan Wilkie drove in the fourth run with a groundout. Gage Morris (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Martin (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 8K). Seigler took the mound to record the final out with just one pitch. Rome had six different players to single as they out-hit the Canes six to three. Chandler Bridges (4 IP, 4ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K) was saddled with the pitching loss for the Wolves. CARTERSVILLE 7, SEQUOYAH 2 Cartersville took advantage of four straight walks to begin their game with Sequoyah Saturday and J.P. Martin delivered a two-run double as the Canes claimed an early four-run lead. An infield error contributed to the other run. Sequoyah scored single runs in the second and third innings, but the Hurricanes more than answered with three runs of their own to lead 7-2 after three frames. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Levi Ayers (5 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 4K) and relievers Mason Barnett (1 IP, 1K) and Gage Morris (1 IP, 1K) managed the Chiefs’ offense. Martin finished with three hits including his double and two RBI. Anthony Seigler (RBI) and Ian Inaba added a pair of hits each. Barnett (double, RBI), Devin Warner, and Preston Welchel had one hit apiece. Cartersville (5-2) hosts Etowah Monday at Richard Bell Field at 5:30 p.m.

The Cass girls soccer team blanked visiting Coahulla Creek Friday night at Doug Cochran Stadium behind three goals by Logan Vermaas while the Cass boys team were edged by the Colts. CASS GIRLS 6, COAHULLA CREEK 0 Logan Vermaas finished with a hat trick for the Lady Colonels as they blanked visiting Coahulla Creek Friday night in non-region action. Brittney Ochoa, Leidi Toribio, and Michelle Escobar added one goal each. Lupita Pineda assisted on three of the goals. Briana Ochoa and Hailey Henson contributed one assist each. Cass improved to 2-4. The Lady Colts are now 4-3. COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 6, CASS 5 (Overtime) The Cass boys soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion Friday night at home to Cohulla Creek, 6-5. The visiting Colts scored the game-winning goal with only eight seconds remaining in the second, five-minute overtime period for the non-region victory. Coahulla Creek broke open a tight game with three quick goals in the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 4-1 lead to the intermission, but it was Cass that mounted an improbable second half comeback. Carlos Perez scored the Colonels’ first half goal that tied the score 1-1 and after Cass fell behind 5-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game, they rallied to send the game into extra time. Javier Duarte scored in the second half to narrow the Colts’ lead to 5-2 and Julio Medina collected a rebound off a corner kick and put it in the back of the net to cut the Colts’ advantage to 5-3 in the 64th minute. Cass scored on an Alex Cabanas’ header off a free kick less than ten minutes later to make the score 5-4 and Felipe Albarran scored the regulation equalizer with one minute remaining. Coahulla Creek improved to 3-1. Cass (1-5) hosts Carrollton Tuesday night.

The Woodland Lady Cats’ soccer team rolled past Cedartown Thursday 8-0 and Pickens County on Friday, 11-1. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored three goals in each of the one-sided wins. Grace Webb and Tiera Feanny followed with three goals each in the two victories. Anna McCrary, Hayley Gilbert, Kayla Gilbert, Molly Plott, and Esmeralda Hernandez also added scores for Woodland. The Lady Cats (3-2-1) host Paulding County Tuesday to open Region 7-AAAAA play. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD GIRLS 2, CARTERSVILLE 1 Marissa Mowry scored the Cartersville goal in the second half Friday night in Tunnel Hill, but it was the Lady Bruins — currently ranked 9th in Class AAAA — that improved to 5-1 with the non-region win. Cartersville (3-2) hosts Sequoyah Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and starts Region 5-AAAA action Friday at 6 p.m. at Troup County. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD BOYS 3, CARTERSVILLE 2 Cartersville’s Pedro Ghanem scored both of the Hurricanes’ goals Friday night at Northwest Whitfield. The Class AAAA, 7th-ranked Bruins improved to 3-1 with the non-region victory. The Canes (3-3, ranked 9th) host Sequoyah Tuesday and travel to Troup County Friday.

Cass out hit visiting Wheeler 11-10 and led by a 4-3 score going to the seventh inning Friday night, but dropped the non-region game 6-4 when the Wildcats scored three times in their final offensive frame. The Colonels took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third on three hits and an error, but Wheeler answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Cass went back ahead 4-3 in the fourth when Gavin Young singled and eventually came around to score on a pair of stolen bases and a wild pitch. The pitching loss also fell to Young (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 2K) who entered in the fourth inning in relief of starter Evan Hinton (3.1 IP, 3ER, 7H, 4BB, 8K). Steven Spell (0.2 IP, 0R, 0BB, 0H) retired the final two outs for the Colonels. Bryson Markley had a three-hit game for Cass.Young and Spell had two hits each as did Nathan Smith. Clay Means had one hit and one RBI. Hinton drove in a run with a double. Cass also stole seven bases in the game. Young swiped three. Markley, Spell, Ajami Harmon, and Matt Shook stole one each. Wheeler improved to 3-2 on the year. Cass (2-2) plays a doubleheader Saturday at Pepperell starting at 1 p.m.

The Excel Christian Academy Middle School girls basketball team recently captured the Christian Fellowship Athletic Association League Championship. Excel is a member of the Christian Federation Athletic Association, which is made up of schools from Rome, Calhoun, Dalton, and Cedartown. The Lady Eagles entered the tournament as the fourth place team in the league standings. They defeated St. Mary's of Rome in the first round to advance to the semi-final game. They then defeated regular-season champion Coble, in a hard-fought semi-final game. Excel then defeated Berry Middle School in come-from-behind fashion to claim the league title. Berry was the regular season runner-up. A pair of Bartow County Parks and Recreation youth boys basketball teams played in GRPA District 5 Championship games Thursday night with the 10U Bartow boys winning the title. 10U Boys BARTOW 47, WHITFIELD CO. 34 Bartow defeated Whitfield County to win the GRPA District 5 Title and secure a spot in the GRPA State Tournament March 2nd and 3rd in Griffin. Jakez Baldwin led Bartow with 12 points. Kyron McClendon also reached double digits with 10 points. Jakai Baldwin scored nine and Jarrett Scott eight. 8U Boys ROME 24, BARTOW 8 Rome defeated Bartow County to win the District 5 Championship and advance to the State Tournament. Dustin McConnell led Bartow with three points. Lance Tippett added two points in the loss.

It took overtime, but the Cartersville Hurricanes won a back-and-forth battle Thursday night at Blessed Trinity 58-56 to advance in the Class AAAA State Playoffs to the state quarterfinals. The win by the Canes denies Blessed Trinity a trip to the Round of 8 for the first time since 2009. The Titans had a final shot at the end. T.J. Horton made one of two free throws with 0:18 remaining that gave Cartersville a two point lead and Blessed Trinity’s C.J. Abrams took the final shot, but his miss was rebounded by the Canes with 0:02 to seal the victory. Cartersville led 13-8 after a low-scoring opening quarter and held a seven point lead at one point in the second quarter, but Blessed Trinity narrowed the advantage to 25-21 at halftime. Russell Dorvee scored 11 points in the first half for the Titans. T.J. Horton had 11 in the first two quarters for the Canes. Blessed Trinity led 35-34 after three quarters and held as much as a four point lead in the final period, but Cartersville rallied to send the contest to the extra period tied 48-48. T.J. Horton finished the night with 24 points to lead Cartersville. Jaylon Pugh followed with 13. Russell Dorvee finished with 15 points to lead the Titans. Blessed Trinity’s season ends with a 20-7 mark. Cartersville (21-6) will travel to Milledgeville next Wednesday for the state quarterfinals against Baldwin (23-6). The Braves — Region 3-AAAA champs — held off Americus-Sumter Thursday night 60-57.

The Woodland Wildcats struck for six runs in the top of the fifth Thursday evening as they came-from-behind to defeat Coosa, 8-3. The host Eagles led 2-0 after one inning and 3-1 after two frames before Woodland scored a single run in the fourth to narrow the margin to 3-2 heading into the decisive fifth inning. Ben Ammons got the complete game pitching win for the Wildcats. He allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks. He hit one batter and fanned one. Jordan Lee had two hits including a double and one RBI for Woodland. Nick Baley doubled and drove in a run. Bailey Ward and Garrett Cornett each had one hit and one RBI. Marco Haro had an RBI with a sacrifice and Toby Queen had one RBI for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-2) hosts South Paulding and Central-Carroll Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

The Cass offense produced seven runs by the third inning Thursday night on the Colonels’ way to a non-region 8-1 win over visiting Class 6A Northview. The Colonels scored four runs in the second inning and added three more in the third for their early advantage. Northview scored its only run in the fifth and Cass matched it in the sixth inning. Blaine Ingram (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 2K) started on the mound for Cass and earned the pitching victory. Parker Hardin (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB) and Nic Wallin (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) closed out the contest. Clay Means had two hits including a triple, walked twice, and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Colonels’ offensive attack. Gavin Young drove in two runs and had one double. Evan Hinton and Nathan Smith added base hits. Matt Shook finished with a walk and two RBI. Blaine Ingram walked twice and forced in a run. Northview is now 1-2 on the season. The Adairsville girls soccer team battled Southeast Whitfield to a 3-3 draw Wednesday night in Dalton while the Cass girls and boys teams both lost at Sonoraville. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 3, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 3 (tie) A clutch penalty kick save by Lady Tigers’ goalkeeper Havyn Isaac with approximately five minutes remaining in Wednesday night’s game protected a 3-3 draw for the Adairsville girls soccer team at Southeast Whitfield. The Lady Tigers led 3-0 midway through the first half on a pair of goals by Emily Collum and one from Emily Collum, but the Lady Raiders (4-1-1) made it 3-1 by halftime and added two more goals in the second half. Cat Wheeler assisted on one of Collum’s goals and Gillian Johnson assisted on Cochran’s tally. Adairsville (2-0-1) hosts Bremen next Tuesday, Central-Carroll Wednesday, and Haralson County Friday, March 2. SONORAVILLE GIRLS 5, CASS 3 The Lady Colonels were tied with Class AAA 10th-ranked Sonoraville at halftime, 2-2, and narrowed the Lady Phoenix lead to 4-3 in the second half but lost Wednesday evening in Gordon County, 5-3. Lupita Pineda and Logan Vermaas had first half goals for the Lady Colonels. Hailey Henson and Vermaas assisted on the scores. Sonoraville took a 4-2 advantage in the second half, but Leidi Toribio narrowed the lead to 4-3 off a feed from Vermaas before the Phoenix closed out the scoring with less than ten minutes remaining. Sonoraville improved to 2-1-1. The Lady Colonels (1-4) host Coahuila Creek Friday at 5:30 p.m. SONORAVILLE BOYS 5, CASS 3 Cass led early, but the host Phoenix reeled off three consecutive goals in the latter stages of the first half to lead 4-2 at halftime on their way to a 5-3 victory. Carlos Perez scored on a penalty kick for the Colonels opening goal that tied the score 1-1 and Julio Medina gave Cass a 2-1 lead off an assist from Anthony Robledo. Sonoraville rallied, however, to take a two-goal lead into the intermission. Robledo added a second half goal off a feed from Perez that made the score 4-3, but Sonoraville added a late goal to seal the win. Cass keepers Isai Romero (9) and Vladislav Walls (2) combined for 11 saves. Sonoraville improved to 5-1 on the season. Cass (1-4) hosts Coahuila Creek Friday at 7:30 p.m.
