Jake Smith rolled to his right, lobbed the ball into the end zone and connected with Ryan Davis from 27 yards out with only 0:12 remaining to lift visiting Blessed Trinity to a 21-17 upset of the two-time defending Class 4A state champion Cartersville Hurricanes at Weinman Stadium in the second round of the 2017 GHSA state playoffs. The Titans led 14-3 at halftime on a 40-yard touchdown run by Steele Chambers with 6:06 left in the first quarter and a 1-yard Chambers touchdown run that culminated an 80-yard, 13-play drive with only 0:07 left in the half. Cartersville’s first half points came on a school record 55-yard field goal by Jonathan Cruz with 5:11 remaining in the second quarter that cut Blessed Trinity’s lead to 7-3 at the time. Cruz had missed earlier from 52 yards out. In the second half, the Titans missed a 47-yard field goal attempt with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter and Cartersville answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Lawrence to E.J. Turner with 2:29 left in the period. A two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Canes had narrowed the Blessed Trinity lead to 14-9. The Canes defense stopped the Titans on their next possession and forced a punt that was scooped up off the bounce and returned 75 yards for a touchdown by Marko Dudley. Rico Frye took a direct snap and converted a two-point conversion to give Cartersville a 17-14 lead with 10:57 remaining in the game. Blessed Trinity got the ball back with just under two minutes remaining at the Cartersville 46 yard line and drove successfully for the winning score. Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished 16-for-29 passing for 148 yards and one touchdown. He also ran 13 times for 18 yards. Running back Rico Frye carried 18 times for 96 yards and caught three passes for 27 yards. On defense for Cartersville, Grant Harris had 10 tackles including 2 for loss. Marquail Coaxum finished with 9 tackles and a pass break-up. Nyvin Nelson and Carson Murray both had sacks. The Canes finished the season with an 11-1 mark. Their state-leading win streak was snapped at 41 games. The playoff loss also marks the end of an historic run by the Cartersville senior class. The Hurricane senior class accumulated a 53-3 record over four years that included two state championships, four region championships, three Final Four appearances, and 14 playoff wins. Blessed Trinity (10-2) travels to Thomson for the state quarterfinals next Friday. Thomson knocked off Americus-Sumter in overtime, 35-34. The Woodland boys basketball team opened the 2017-18 season Friday night with a non-region 67-41 win at Gordon Central. Charles Norman scored 23 to lead the Wildcats and Hunter Johnson followed with 14 points. The score was tied 13-13 at the end of one quarter and Woodland outscored Gordon Central 19-10 in the second period to take a 32-23 lead. The Warriors narrowed the lead to eight points after three quarters, but Woodland outscored Gordon Central 24-6 in the final period for a 26 point victory. DJ Robinson added eight points for Woodland. Connor Gallagher scored seven. Dawson Wilkins chipped in with six points while Jaylen Ballard contributed three with Peyton Roberts and Justice Carter adding two points each. Gabe Ross led Gordon Central (0-1) with 15 points. Quan Curtis scored ten and Corey Dixon eight for the Warriors. Woodland (1-0) takes on North Paulding Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Paulding County High School. GORDON CENTRAL GIRLS 55, WOODLAND 31 Mercedes Coleman poured in 28 points and Leila Culberson added 12 to help lead Gordon Central past the visiting Woodland Lady Cats Friday night in Calhoun, 55-31. Gordon Central (1-0) took an 18-10 lead after one quarter and led 33-15 at halftime. Madgie Robinson, Morgan Cooper, and Nickiah Metcalf scored six points each for Woodland. Leah Stantz scored four points. Whitney Harris added three points, while Ansley Evans, Makayla Dowdy, and Lauren Morris chipped in two points each. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department 10U youth football all-stars defeated visiting Dalton Thursday night at Hamilton Crossing Park to reach the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) District 5 championship game against Cartersville Saturday at Dellinger Park. Cartersville's 8U and 12U teams will also host District 5 title games Saturday. 10U BARTOW COUNTY 18, DALTON 8​​ The Bartow County Parks and Recreation 10U youth football all-stars reached the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) District 5 championship game by defeating Dalton 18-8 Thursday night at Hamilton Crossing Park. 10U Bartow (3-0) will now play Cartersville (2-0) Saturday at 11:30am at Dellinger Park for the GRPA District 5 title with the winner advancing to the GRPA State Championship. The state title game is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 in Savannah’s Grayson Stadium at 12 noon. The District 5 champion will play the District 2 champion. Dalton led 8-0 early Thursday night on a 60-yard touchdown pass, but 10U Bartow responded with a 60-yard drive and trailed 8-6 at halftime. Dalton recovered an onside kick to begin the second half and drove inside the Bartow five yard line, but the locals’ defense held and took over on downs at their own four yard line. From there, 10U Bartow drove 96 yards and took the lead on a 20 yard touchdown run by Jakai Baldwin. Leading 12-8, Bartow then recovered a high Dalton snap in the end zone late in the fourth quarter for a 10-point win. 10U Dalton’s season ended with a 2-1 mark. 12U DALTON 30, BARTOW COUNTY 24 Malachi Jeffries scored on touchdown runs of 70-, 60-, and 60-yards, but 12U Bartow fell Thursday night at Dalton 30-24. Jamari Brice also added a 3-yard scoring run for Bartow County. 12U Bartow all-stars season ends with a 2-1 record. They had wins over Calhoun (28-8) and Gordon County (35-0). Dalton (2-1) will face Cartersville (2-0) for the GRPA District 5 championship Saturday afternoon at Dellinger Park. The Cass Lady Colonels opened their 2017-18 basketball season Wednesday night at Cumberland Christian Academy in Austell with a 69-36 victory. Cass led 9-3 after one quarter and 26-16 at halftime in a tightly contested first half. The Lady Colonels then broke the game open by outscoring the Lady Patriots 21-6 in the third quarter to take a 47-22 advantage on their way to a 33-point win. Cumberland Christian slipped to an 0-2 record on the young season. Kyla Michienzi led Cass with 20 points. She was followed by Payton Stoddard with 13 and Alexis Ware with 10 points. Lyric Curtis contributed eight points. Chanel Clemmons added six. Sharia Wade scored four and Amber Brittian chipped in two points. Cass (1-0) is now off for more than two weeks. The Lady Colonels play next at Rome on Friday, December 1. The Cass boys did not play Wednesday. The Colonels begin their season Friday near Augusta in the Evans High School Tip-Off Classic. The Cass boys will play Hephzibah Friday at 7pm and Thomson Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm.

Competitive cheerleading has a long-standing tradition in Cartersville and Bartow County with Woodland winning five state titles, Cartersville three, and Cass one in the 25-year history of the competition under GHSA. Woodland won titles in 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07 as a female squad and won co-ed state championships in 2008-09 and 2016-17. Cartersville won state titles in 1994-95, 2000-01, and 2014-15 with Cass earning a state championship in 2001-02. Although this year’s teams did not bring home a state title, all four schools qualified for the state sectionals and advanced into the state finals this past weekend at the Columbus Civic Center and two of those teams came away with top five finishes. Adairsville, who won Region 6-AAA, earned a third place finish in the state finals for Class AAA. It is the best-ever finish in Adairsville competitive cheerleading history. In the all-classificaiton co-ed division, Woodland qualified for the state finals and placed fourth in defense of their 2016 state title. Cass was the third place qualifier from Region 7-AAAAA and advanced into the state finals where the Colonels placed eleventh. Cartersville qualified for the state sectionals with a fourth place finish in Region 5-AAAA. The Canes then were the top sectional qualifier on Friday to reach the finals, but their Saturday results were outside the top five and were not reported to our outlet. Kingston’s Spencer Fields placed third at the 2017 NCAA D-III South-Southeast Regional and led his Rhodes College team to a runner-up finish this past Saturday The Lynx earned a bid to the NCAA Championships this Saturday in Elsah, Illinois and Fields, who was already the Runner of the Year from his conference, earned NCAA All-Region honors. Meanwhile, Cartersville’s Katie O’Connor leads Western Carolina into the Southern Conference Championship Tournament this weekend and eight local college basketball players contributed with their respective programs this past week on the hardwoods. Christopher Newport University finished just eight points ahead of Rhodes with Emory placing third. She then added a career-high 21 kills (.677 attack percentage), a dig, and four blocks in her career final home game which was a 3-1 loss to Furman. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… averaged 11.5 points per game in 27.5 minutes per game and was a starter as the Braves opened the 2017-18 season on the road with losses at LSU Friday night and at Creighton Sunday night. Against LSU, Mosby had 15 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field and was 1-of-3 from behind the arc. He also added four rebounds, four assists, and five steals in the two games. HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Jr., F, Cartersville HS)… scored two points in only nine minutes off the bench last Thursday night during an 84-66 home win over Pensacola Christian College. He then added one point and one offensive rebound last Saturday in an 89-75 loss at Voorhees College (SC). Point (3-2) plays at St. Andrews University (NC) Tuesday night, at Reinhardt University Thursday, and hosts Bluefield College (VA) this Saturday. RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… was a starter and scored nine points with three rebounds and one steal in the Cougars’ season-opening 84-67 exhibition win at home over LaGrange College last Wednesday. CSU plays in the Albany State Rams Rising Invitational Friday and Saturday where they will face Montevallo and Albany State.

The Cass wrestling team got the 2017-2018 season off to a fast start Saturday with a duals format championship at the East Coweta Duals in Sharpsburg. The Colonels opened the tournament with a 52-12 defeat of Woodland-Stockbridge and beat Hillgrove 50-24 and Lee County 51-18 to reach the championship match. In the finals, Cass topped Ola 42-35. All four local high school cheer teams advanced to the GHSA state cheer championships this past weekend at the Columbus Civic Center and two of those teams came away with top five finishes. Adairsville, who won Region 6-AAA, earned a third place finish in the state finals for Class AAA. In the all-classificaiton co-ed division, Woodland qualified for the state finals and placed fourth in defense of their 2016 state title. Cass was the third place qualifier from Region 7-AAAAA and advanced into the state finals where the Colonels placed eleventh. Cartersville qualified for the state sectionals with a fourth place finish in Region 5-AAAA. The Canes then were the top sectional qualifier on Friday to reach the finals, but their Saturday results were outside the top five and were not reported.

Cartersville won for the 41st time in a row and quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for four touchdowns and 272 yards in the first half as the Canes built a 42-0 lead and cruised to a 48-21 win over Pickens Friday at Weinman Stadium in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. Lawrence had scoring strikes to T.J. Horton, Jackson Lowe, and E.J. Turner twice as Cartersville took control early. Horton’s score came on a 17-yard reception that was the Canes’ second play and was on the heals of his 40-yard catch on the Canes’ opening play. Lowe’s touchdown reception was a 41-yarder over the middle and Turner had a 3-yard touchdown catch and a 50-yard touchdown reception. He would have added another on a 24-yard scoring play if not for a fumble recovered by teammate Kaleb Chatmon in the end zone. Cartersville running back Rico Frye scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter and Marcus Gary added a 19-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass with 4:37 remaining in the third quarter that made the score 48-7. Pickens scored on a fumble return early in the third quarter and added two more scores against the Hurricanes’ second unit. Lawrence was 10-for-13 for 272 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone. Cartersville (11-0) hosts Blessed Trinity next Friday night in the second round of the state playoffs. Blessed Trinity (9-2) blanked Oconee County in the first round, 35-0. CEDAR GROVE 48, ADAIRSVILLE 13 The top-ranked Cedar Grove Saints are not only the defending state champions in Class AAA, they proved Friday night they are as good as advertised. The Saints (11-0), who are now riding a 21-game win streak, eliminated Adairsville in the Class AAA state playoffs opening round, 48-13. Cedar Grove streaked to a 21-0 lead early on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Xavier Dennis to Jadon Haselwood, a 61-yard Darrell Neal jaunt, and a 50-yard punt return by Haselwood. The Tigers’ only score of the first half came on a 30-yard field goal by Josh Honea on the final play of the half. Dennis and Haselwood connected again early in the third quarter to give the Saints a 28-3 lead and Adairsville answered with their only touchdown of the night. Under heavy pressure and scrambling to his right, Tigers’ quarterback Mason Boswell found Travon Branch about 20 yards downfield and the speedster took it the rest of the way for a 50-yard scoring play. Honea, who added another 26-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter, converted the PAT. Cedar Grove added two more touchdown runs and a 26-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Israel Spivey to round out the Saints’ scoring. Cedar Grove advances to host Dawson County in the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs. Dawson County (8-3) eliminated Hart County Friday night 49-14. Adairsville’s season ends with a 6-5 mark.
