CROSS COUNTRY AUBREE COLE — Jacksonville State University (Soph., Cartersville HS). . . finished 54th of 116 DI runners and was second on her team as the Gamecocks ran sixth in the University Division of the Florida State Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park. JSU finished 13th among 21 total schools that included other collegiate levels. The host Seminoles won the University Division ahead of Jacksonville University and Florida. Florida A&M was fourth and South Florida fifth. The Gamecocks are scheduled next for the Alabama Crimson Classic this Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa. JAISON MORNING — Valdosta State University (Jr., Cass HS). . . finished 19th of 117 runners this past Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville hosted by Georgia College and State University. Morning ran the 8K in 27:42 and was second on his team. Augusta University had seven of the top ten runners to win easily over Georgia College and Emmanuel. Valdosta State was fourth in the 13-team event. VSU’s next meet will be the Gulf South Conference 8K Championship on Saturday, October 21 in Danville, AL.

The defending Class AAAAA state champion girls cross country team at Woodland High School finished second Saturday at the Alexander/Asics Invitational and established a new team record in the process. The race was competed on a 5K course at Fox Hall Farms Sporting Club near Douglasville and was hosted by Alexander High School. The Woodland girls team averaged 19:18.31 from its top five runners, setting a new team mark for best average time. Westminster won the girls championship division race with 86 points. Woodland followed with 122. Starrs Mill (135), Alexander (136), and Landmark Christian (147) rounded out the top five of 20 teams in the division. Naima Turbes of Westminster was the individual girls winner. She ran 17:27 to finish three seconds ahead of Jones County’s Erin Leonard. Sophomore Carli Clymer led Woodland with a 16th place finish in 18:57. She was followed by teammates Angela Cochran (19:07, 18th), Lindsay Scifers (19:23, 29th), McKenna Trapheagen (19:28, 33rd), Baylee Evans (19:35.43, 37th), Cheyenne Spinks (19:35.77, 38th), Avery Hull (22:19, 114th), Anna Payne (23:24, 143rd), and Lexis Bubrick (23:32, 146th). The Woodland boys team competed in the Class 5A - 7A division and placed 13th of 37 teams. The division was won by Chattahoochee with Newnan, Decatur, Cherokee, and Eagle’s Landing rounding out the top five teams. Antaures Jackson of Eagle’s Landing won the individual title in the division with a 5K time of 15:53. He was 17 seconds ahead of Mykal Hogue of Cherokee. The division included 328 runners. For the Woodland boys, Levi Brandenburg had a team best 17:20 run to place 29th. He was followed by teammates Dylan Stermer (17:43, 60th), Reece Mitchell (17:51, 68th), Kobe Cochran (18:23, 99th), Dawson McClure (18:27, 106th), Tracy Grimes (18:58, 149th), Patrick Bollwerk (18:59, 150th), Gabe Shephard (19:07, 161st), Bryant Knox (19:22, 179th), and Noah Warren (20:00, 227th) The next race for Woodland is this coming Saturday at Gainesville College in the Nike/Fleet Feet Coach Wood Invitational.

The Cartersville High School cross country teams competed Saturday in a large field event at the Jesse Owens Classic at the Oakville Indian Mounds near Danville. The event drew more than 5,000 total runners from around the Southeast in 12 divisions. The Lady Canes placed 12th and the Canes 16th in the Silver division races. There were 35 girls teams in the division and 41 boys teams. Clara Pinter of Pearl (MS) High School won the girls 5K Silver race with a 19:28.66. She finished one second ahead of Kately Cartwright of Hernando (MS) High School. Pearl also won the girls team event in the division by 13 points over Fort Payne (AL). Vanna Beach led Cartersville (22:25) with a 67th place finish. The Lady Canes’ junior was followed by freshman teammate Alex Machado (22:35, 67th). Zane Bryan and Alice Terry were 91st and 92nd in 22:55, Katie Tolbert was 97th in 22:59, and Kayla Carpenter ran a 24:29 for 148th. In the boys Silver division race, Alex Ponce of Merrol Hyde Magnet (TN) completed the 5K course in 16:33.7 for the individual victory. There were 304 runners in the division. For Cartersville, junior Jacob Busek (18:03, 52nd) led the way followed by Maximus Florence (18:08, 61st), Bill Archer (18:37, 106th), Clay Ross (19:01, 133rd), Parker Breedlove (19:11, 139th), Harrison Banks (19:20, 153rd), Matthew Wilson (19:32, 171st). Cartersville returns to action Thursday at Sam Smith Park in the Wire2Wire Invitational.

LAWRENCE TOSSES SIX TD PASSES AS CANES BLANK GRANGERS Trevor Lawrence threw six touchdown passes in the first half as Cartersville blanked the LaGrange Grangers at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, 56-0. The Region 5-AAAA win for the Purple Hurricanes marks the 37th consecutive victory for the two-time defending state champions over the past three seasons. Lawrence -- who totaled 227 yards -- had touchdown strikes to J’Kobe Orr (43-yards) and Jackson Lowe (35 yards) in the first quarter. He connected with E.J. Turner twice (10 and 51 yards), T.J. Horton, and Rico Frye for additional touchdowns in the second period. The Hurricanes’ special teams added a seventh first half touchdown with a blocked punt for a touchdown scored by Marquail Coaxum. Jake Richards was credited with the block. Jonathan Cruz connected on each extra point and Cartersville led 49-0 at the intermission. With a running clock in effect, Canes’ running back Marcus Gray scored on a six-yard run for the only second half touchdown and a 56-0 final score. Cartersville (7-0, 3-0) hosts Sandy Creek next Friday at Weinman Stadium in another region matchup. PAULDING COUNTY RALLIES PAST WOODLAND The Woodland Wildcats led Paulding County 34-21 with just over eight minutes remaining Friday night, but the visiting Patriots rallied late for a 35-34 Region 7-AAAAA win. Woodland quarterback Brody Williams connected with Demarcus Williams for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter that gave the Wildcats a 34-21 lead, but the PAT attempt was blocked and that would ultimately prove to be the difference. The Patriots drove down the field and scored on a 3-yard pass with 2:57 remaining to narrow the lead to 34-28 and forced Woodland to punt on their ensuing possession. Now with the ball at their own 44-yard line with 1:48 remaining, the Patriots drove to the Woodland 7-yard line for a 4th and goal play with 34.5 seconds remaining. Paulding connected for the 7-yard touchdown pass and added the PAT for the come-from-behind, one-point win. Woodland started the game by recovering an onside kick and scored two plays later on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brody Williams to Dylan Forman. Paulding tied the game with a touchdown pass, but the Wildcats regained the lead on a 9-yard touchdown run by Kaison Williams late in the first quarter. Now ahead 14-7, Woodland again utilized an onside kick and recovery to set up another first quarter score. Demarcus Williams gave the Wildcats a 21-7 lead on an eight-yard run. Quarterback Brody Williams added a second quarter touchdown run for Woodland with a five-yard jaunt that gave the Wildcats a 28-7 advantage. Paulding County added a second quarter touchdown with just over five minutes remaining before the half to make the score 28-14 at the break. The Patriots then narrowed the margin to 28-21 with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter on an 8-yard pass play. The scoring drive was 50 yards following a Woodland fumble at midfield. Paulding County improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (3-4, 2-3) travels to East Paulding next Friday. ADAIRSVILLE DROPS SUB-REGION OPENER TO CALHOUN Calhoun quarterback Gavin Gray threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as Calhoun pulled away from Adairsville in the second half for a 42-16 Region 6-AAA South sub-region win. Gray had a 61-yard touchdown pass to Drew Rutledge and a 77-yard scoring pass to Luke Moseley in the first half to go with a two-yard touchdown run. Adairsville scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Mason Boswell to Ethan Belcher to tie the score 7-7, cut Calhoun’s lead to 14-10 with a 37-yard Josh Honea field goal, and added a 27-yard touchdown pass from Boswell to Cody Henderson with 0:09 left in the first half to make the score 21-16 at halftime. Calhoun (6-1, 2-0) scored three unanswered second half touchdowns for a 42-16 win. Gray scored on a one-yard run and threw two second half touchdown passes. He connected with Moseley on a 15-yarder and Zack Fuller with a 10-yard strike. Adairsville (3-3, 0-1) plays at Sonoraville next Friday in another 6-AAA South sub-region game. COLONELS EDGED BY RAIDERS The Cass Colonels led 9-7 in the final minute of the third quarter Friday night, but visiting East Paulding took advantage of a Colonels’ special teams mistake for a go-ahead field goal and scored a late insurance touchdown to secure a 17-9 Region 7-AAAAA win at Cass’ Doug Cochran Stadium. East Paulding took the opening kickoff and drove 59 yards on five plays to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback John Estes found Ashton Dixon on an 18-yard pass for the score. Cass drove back down the field on their initial possession of the night. The drive stalled in the red zone however and the Colonels settled for a 36-yard field goal by Anthony Robledo. Robledo added the only other score of the first half with a 20-yard field goal with 0:13 left in the first half. The kick culminated a 68-yard, 9-play drive to make the score 7-6 at the intermission. After receiving the second half kickoff, Cass drove 76 yards in 12 plays and used up 7:29 of the third quarter, but again settled for a 21-yard field goal by Robledo to take a 9-7 lead. The Cass defense stopped East Paulding on their next possession and forced a punt, but a short kick clipped the heal of a Cass player on the punt return team and East Paulding recovered at the Colonels’ 22-yard line. From there the Raiders drove to the Cass five yard line, but were forced to kick a 21-yard field goal by Devlin Dolph to take a 10-9 lead with 0:06 remaining in the third quarter. Both defenses limited opposing offenses in the final period, but the Raiders were able to add a late 58-yard drive that was culminated with a 2-yard run by Tyrell Robinson with 1:39 left. East Paulding improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in region play. Cass (0-6, 0-4) travels to region leading and top-ranked Rome next Friday at Barron Stadium.

Cartersville volleyball repeated as Region 5-AAAA champions Thursday night at the Storm Center by sweeping to straight set victories over Central-Carroll in the winners’ bracket final and Chapel Hill in the region title match. The Lady Canes did not lose a set in region play during the 2017 season. A run that included 19 consecutive set wins. Cartersville topped upstart sixth-seeded Central-Carroll 25-16 and 25-11 in their first match of the night and took down Chapel Hill 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 in the best-of-five finals. "I'm extremely proud to be Region Champs again,” said Cartersville coach Dustin Cothran. “Winning two straight region titles is a great reward for the hard work the girls have put in.” Region MVP Catie Heilman was a force in Thursday’s two tournament matches for the Lady Canes. "Between the two matches, I'd say she had close to 25 kills,” added Cothran. “Our ball control, effort, and attitudes were great again tonight. The crowd was amazing, and we're hoping for the same type of support at home next Thursday in the first round of the playoffs." CASS VOLLEYBALL SPLITS OPENING MATCHES AT REGION TOURNEY Cass volleyball split a pair of matches Thursday night at Kell High School to remain alive in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. The Lady Colonels lost to Rome 25-17, 25-10 in their tourney opener, but rebounded to defeat East Paulding in straight sets 25-16, 25-21. Cass (22-15) will return to action Saturday morning at Kell High School against either Carrollton or Hiram. The top five teams from the tournament will advance to the state tournament.

Woodland scored a pair of runs early, but Carrollton answered with five runs in the first three innings on their way to a 7-2 win in the Region 7-AAAAA championship game Thursday in Carrollton. Carrollton and Woodland will both host first round series in the Class AAAAA state playoffs that begin next week. The Lady Cats started fast and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. They also tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second, but the 3rd-ranked Lady Trojans answered every time and kept scoring runs. Both teams took advantage of some early errors. Woodland committed three of their five total miscues in the first three innings and Carrollton also made two errors in the early innings. Carrollton pitcher Olivia Fannin (7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the complete-game pitching win for the Lady Trojans by tossing a two-hitter. Woodland’s Madi Bentley (6 IP, 7R, 3ER, 7H, 1BB) also pitched a complete game. Ansley Barge led Carrollton with two hits that included a double and one RBI. Five other players had one hit each for the Lady Trojans. Brittany Cox and Bella Carnes had one hit and one RBI each for the Lady Cats. Carrollton (25-2) will host the 4-seed from Regon 8-AAAAA in a best-of-three series that opens with a doubleheader October 11. As region runner-up, Woodland (14-15) will host the 3-seed from Region 8-AAAAA in a best-of-three series that also begins with a doubleheader Wednesday, October 11.

Cartersville volleyball defeated Troup County in straight sets Wednesday at Chapel Hill 25-13 and 25-19 to reach the winners’ bracket final of the Region 5-AAAA tournament. The tournament continues Thursday at the Storm Center at Cartersville High School with the Lady Canes and three other teams still alive for the region title. The top-seeded Lady Canes will play sixth-seeded Central-Carroll at 5:30 pm with the winner advancing to the region championship match. Also at 5:30 pm, Chapel Hill will play LaGrange in an elimination match. The Cartersville/Central loser will play the Chapel Hill/LaGrange winner at 6:30 pm in a semifinal elimination match with the winner advancing to the finals against the Cartersville/Central winner at 7:30 pm. The finals will be a best-of-five set match. The bracket is not a true double-elimination. The losers’ bracket survivor is not required to defeat the winners’ bracket winner twice to win the region title. "I loved our pregame preparation and the attitudes we brought today,” said Cartersville coach Dustin Cothran. “The girls were very relaxed on the bus, but that all changed when we stepped off. We played like we were hungry, and we looked like the team who had gone 6-0 in the region. Catie Heilman was huge all the way around for us. Both of our middles put a lot of balls away. Our defense was really good.” Cartersville’s Heilman was named Area MVP. Teammates Grace Hunter and Nedu Evans were also selected to the All-Area First Team. The Cartersville girls and boys cross country teams finished fourth at the Cass-Cartersville XC Invitational Tuesday with 20 teams represented. Pope won the boys race with 37 points, followed by Southeast Whitfield (68), Centennial (108), and Cartersville (108). Centennial won the tie-breaker for third with a better sixth place runner. Adairsville was seventh with 199 points and the Woodland boys were ninth. John Higinbotham (Veritas Classical) won the individual title. There were 87 runners in the boys’ varsity competition. Pope won the girls’ team title with 60 points. The Lady Greyhounds were followed by Centennial (63), Harrison (132), and Cartersville (134). Woodland placed seventh without their regular varsity lineup and Adairsville finished eleventh. Grace Clements of Bremen High School won the girls’ individual title. The race included 89 competitors. Woodland softball won twice Tuesday night in Carrollton to not only reach the championship round of the Region 7-AAAAA playoffs, but also secure themselves the first home state playoff series in program history. “I’m really proud of them,” said Woodland coach Colman Roberts after the two wins. “We want to go back and win the region Thursday night, but will be hosting a state playoff series regardless of Thursday’s outcome. That will be a first for our school.” Woodland survived back-to-back elimination games Tuesday night in Carrollton as they blasted Hiram in five innings 16-8 and edged Kell in the nightcap, 5-4. With the two wins, Woodland will face top-seeded Carrollton Thursday evening in the championship round at 5 p.m. Carrollton does not have a loss in the double-elimination region tournament, so Woodland will need two wins Thursday to capture the region championship. Woodland scored in every inning of their win over Hiram and out hit the Hornets sixteen to nine. Hiram held leads of 3-2 in the second inning and 6-3 in the third, but the Lady Cats kept posting runs to regain the advantage. Bella Carnes (RBI), Hannah Miller (RBI), and Brittany Cox all had three hit games for Woodland. Audrey Morris drove in three runs with two hits and Morgan Bailey added a hit in a three RBI performance. Ansley Evans (RBI), Caroline Higdon (2 RBIs), Jordan Duck (RBI), and Skylar Chappell each added one hit apiece. Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard (5 IP, 8R, 6ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K) allowed a pair of home runs early in the game, but settled in to allow only one hit and two unearned runs over the final two frames in earning the win in the circle. In the come-from-behind upset of 2nd-seeded Kell, the Lady Cats trailed 3-0 through four innings but rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth for their margin of victory. Morris walked to start the Woodland fifth inning and Carnes followed with a sac bunt that turned into a two-base error charged to Kell’s pitcher. Morris stopped at third on the play. Bailey grounded out to force in the Lady Cats’ first run and Evans chased home another run with an RBI single. Higdon singled off the pitcher’s glove and Cox tied the game with another RBI infield single. Chappell then followed with a double into center field that forced home two more runs to give Woodland a 5-3 lead. Woodland pitcher Madi Bentley (7 IP, 4R, 3ER, 11H, 2BB, 5K) allowed three hits and one unearned run over the final two innings, but held on for the complete game victory that included striking out the side in the seventh inning. Niya McDuffie (3 RBIs) and Abby Ashway led Kell’s offense with three hits each. Chappell, Cox, Higdon, Evans, Bailey, and Carnes had one hit each for Woodland. Woodland (14-14) travels back to Carrollton Thursday for a potential doubleheader with Carrollton (23-2). The Lady Trojans are the No. 3 ranked team in Class AAAAA.

Cass volleyball wrapped up the regular season Tuesday night at Rome High School by splitting a pair of Region 7-AAAAA matches with Kell and Paulding County. The Lady Colonels extended their match with Kell to three sets by winning the second set, 25-20, but the Lady Longhorns took the first set and the final set 25-13 and 25-16. Against Paulding County, Cass won in straight sets 25-6 and 25-10. Cass (21-14, 3-5) opens post-season play Thursday in the region tournament at Kell High School. The Lady Colonels’ opponent was not determined at the time of this release. Cass coach Chelsea Morris said the region tournament bracket would be made available during the day on Wednesday.

Cartersville softball was eliminated from the post season Tuesday evening with an 11-3 home loss to Troup County in the two teams’ best-of-three Region 5-AAAA playoff series. The two teams split a doubleheader Saturday to force Tuesday’s series deciding game. Troup County took an early 4-0 lead in the first two innings with Cartersville narrowing the margin to 4-2 in the bottom half of the second. The Tigers then posted five runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-2 and held on late for the 11-3 decision. Mackenzie Miller (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 0K) was the complete game pitching winner for Troup. Anna Kate McElhaney (1.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 2BB) and Colbi Ballard (5.1 IP, 7R, 5ER, 7H, 4BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for Cartersville. Kayla Lane and Skye Loftin combined for six hits and seven RBIs to lead Troup’s eleven-hit attack. Anna Kate McElhaney had two hits for Cartersville. Paris Poston (RBI), Ballard, Lauren McElhaney, and Presley Edwards had the other Lady Canes’ hits. Mattie Johnson and Rylie Harris each added one RBI. Troup County (11-14) advances in the region playoffs and also earned a berth in the Class AAAA state playoffs. Cartersville’s season concludes with a 9-16 mark.
