ADAIRSVILLE 49, MURRAY COUNTY 30 The Adairsville Tigers defeated Murray County in a Region 6-AAA cross-over game Friday night 49-30 The Tigers took a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter and led 27-9 with just under four minutes remaining in the first half before the visiting Indians stormed back to make the score 27-23 at halftime. Mason Boswell tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Burgess in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead but the PAT kick attempt was blocked. In the second period, Christian Steele scored on a 15-yard run with a Josh Honea PAT kick giving the Tigers a 13-0 lead. Just over one minute later, Adairsville’s Chance Jones picked off a pass from Murray County’s Josh Curtis and returned it for a touchdown. The Honea kick had the Tigers leading 20-0. Juan Andrade connected on a 37-yard field goal for Murray County with 6:15 remaining in the first half to get the Indians on the scorebard. Then after recovering an onside kickoff, Murray County scored on a 44-yard double-pass from Tucker Gregg to Justin Genitempo that made the score 20-9. After one possession exchange, Adairsville pushed the lead to 27-9 on an 80-yard touchdown strike from Boswell to Travon Branch. Murray County did not go away. The Indians answered with a pair of touchdowns before the intermission. Gregg scored on a 2-yard run that capped an eight play, 80-yard scoring drive and then raced 85 yards on a draw play when the Indians got the ball back. The second TD run came with less than 0:24 remaining in the half. Adairsville controlled more of the action in the second half and posted three, third quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Steele scored on a 7-yard run to cap a 64-yard, six play drive; Boswell connected with Derrick Simmons on a 24-yard touchdown pass; and Steele scored his third rushing touchdown with 0:45 remaining in the quarter. Boswell also added a pair of two-point conversions. Murray County’s only scoring play of the second half was a 28-yard touchdown pass from Curtis to Preston Van Meter that cut Adairsville’s lead to 41-30 with 2:09 left in the third quarter. Murray County fell to 2-3 with the loss. Adairsville (3-2) heads into sub-region play October 6 at home against Calhoun. The Tigers have an open date in their schedule next week and finished the two region cross-over games 1-1. The results of those games could be used in the tie-breaker process for seeding following sub-region play and the region playoff games on November 3. CARTERSVILLE WIN STREAK HITS 35 Top-ranked Cartersville easily took down visiting 10th-ranked Cedartown Friday night 41-7 in the 2017 Homecoming game for the Purple Hurricanes. The Hurricanes took control early with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Lawrence to J’Kobe Orr then added a one-yard Lawrence touchdown run and a 40-yard field goal by Jonathan Cruz for a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. Canes’ running back Rico Frye scored on a touchdown run midway through the second quarter and Lawrence connected with E.J. Turner to stretch the lead to 31-0 with five minutes left in the opening half. Lawrence added one more first half touchdown with a pass to his tight end Jackson Lowe that gave the Hurricanes a 38-0 advantage at halftime. With a running clock in the second half, Jonathan Cruz added a field goal for the Canes and Cedartown scored a late touchdown on a 23-yard shovel pass for a 41-7 final score. It was the first loss of the year for Cedartown. They fall to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (5-0, 1-0) plays at Central-Carroll next Friday. COLONELS FALL AT 9TH-RANKED KELL The Cass Colonels went on the road Friday night to 9th-ranked Kell and came up short, 28-10. Kell (2-3, 2-0) scored on the Longhorns’ first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead. On the first drive, Josiah Futral scored on a 16-yard touchdown run with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter. Cass responded with a field goal to narrow the Kell lead to 7-3, but the Longhorns followed with a pair of touchdowns before the intermission. Blake Simpson scored on touchdown runs from 28 and 20 yards for Kell. In the third quarter, Futral scored on a 31-yard run that gave Kell a 28-3 lead. Cass added a second half touchdown and made it a 28-10 final score with a 9-yard touchdown pass fro Rett Moore to Cameron Gonyea. The Colonels (0-5, 0-3) have a bye week before hosting East Paulding on October 6th. 4TH-RANKED CARROLLTON HANDLES WOODLAND The Woodland Wildcats lost a Region 7-AAAAA road game at 4th-ranked Carrollton Friday night, 41-6. The Trojans took a 22-0 lead in the first half with a first quarter touchdown and two-point conversion, followed by a blocked punt returned for a score and a Thomaston touchdown run. Carrollton pushed the lead to 35-0 prior to Woodland’s Justice Carter scoring on a 10-yard run for the Wildcats. The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) added one more touchdown for a 41-6 final score. Mark Wright was 16-of-25 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown for Carrollton. Kodee Brewer rushed for a team-leading 64 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries for the Trojans. Woodland (2-3, 1-2) hosts Hiram next Friday.

Adairsville High School softball lost a region 6-AAA game at third-ranked Calhoun Thursday 10-2. Calhoun pitcher Blair Hall limited Adairsville to a pair of runs on four hits, no walks, and she struck out five. Adairsville’s two runs came off the long ball. Loren Harris and Sadye Johnson both hit solo shots for the Lady Tigers. Calhoun went up 5-0 through three innings prior to the two Adairsville homers in the fourth. The Lady Jackets then added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. In addition to the two home runs. Johnson and Sierra Tanner (double) added one more hit each for Adairsville. Calhoun improved to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in region play. The Lady Jackets also remained unbeaten at home. Adairsville finished the season 10-10 overall and 4-10 in Region 6-AAA.

Woodland softball fell to Paulding County Thursday night 4-3 in a Region 7-AAAAA contest in Dallas. The Lady Cats narrowed an early Paulding County lead to 3-2 in the second inning and scored a run in the sixth inning for a 4-3 final score. Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard limited Paulding County to only four hits and two earned runs, but was saddled with the loss. Baynard struck out three. Audrey Morris tripled. Jordan Duck and Caroline Higdon doubled. Ansley Evans, Morgan Bailey, and Bella Carnes had the other Woodland hits. Woodland (7-12, 4-7) plays at Villa Rica Friday.

Cartersville volleyball split a pair of non-region matches Thursday evening in Tunnel Hill falling to host Northwest Whitfield, but defeating Cahoun. The Lady Canes took Northwest to three sets by winning the middle set 25-10, but lost 25-21 in the opening set and 15-10 in the third. "It was a very disappointing night for us. The first set with NW Whitfield was hard fought, but I felt like we were on top of our game. As we went into the second set, the wheels seemed to fall off. Players who have been great all year struggled in the second and third sets. NW Whitfield did what they had to do to win, and we just didn't perform. The effort was there, and I feel like the focus was there, but we just couldn't seem to execute. We had a chance to go undefeated for the entire month of September, and I hoped we'd be able to do that. It just wasn't meant to be,” said Cartersville coach Dustin Cothran. In their second match of the night, Cartersville defeated Calhoun in two straight sets 25-22, 25-10. “Against Calhoun, we were less than impressive in the first set, but we played a little better the second (set). Overall, we made way too many errors to beat a team as good as Northwest Whitfield, and we need to learn from that and continue to grow moving forward,” Cothran concluded. The Lady Canes (21-3) host Sonoraville and Murray County October 2.

Cass High softball lost 3-1 at East Paulding Thursday night in a Region 7-AAAAA matchup. East Paulding took a 3-0 lead with a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Cass scored a single unearned run in the top of the seventh. East Paulding out hit Cass five to two. Haley Owens (3.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) and Taylor Gibson (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for Cass in the loss. Alexia Najarro and Maggie Collum had the only hits for the Lady Colonels. East Paulding improved to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in region play. Cass (4-19, 0-11) hosts Paulding County Friday night at 5:55 p.m.

The Cass volleyball team picked up a pair of non-region, straight set wins Thursday night at Pepperell defeating the host Lady Dragons and Paulding County. The match with Paulding County was not part of the regular season region schedule although the two teams are in the same region. The Lady Colonels topped Pepperell 25-15 and 25-21. Cass then defeated Paulding County 25-11 and 25-13. “We started using a new rotation tonight,” said Cass coach Chelsea Morris. “It made a huge positive impact on our defense.” Cass (17-12 overall, 1-3 in region) plays Region 7-AAAAA opponents Woodland and Villa Rica at Woodland High School next Tuesday with the competition beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Colonels also play a non-reigon match at Adairsville next Thursday.

The high school football region standings for leagues including local Bartow County teams. It is a challenging week for local teams in Cartersville and Bartow County. With the exception of the Adairsville Tigers, each local program will take on an opponent Friday night that is currently ranked in the Top Ten of the most recent Georgia High School Football Daily / Atlanta Journal-Constitution polls. In Class AAAAA and specifically Region 7-AAAAA, defending state champion Rome (3-0) remains atop the classification. Meanwhile, local teams Woodland and Cass make trips to take on two other teams from that region in the Top Ten. Woodland (2-2) travels to 4th-ranked Carrollton (3-0) while Cass (0-4) journeys to 9th-ranked Kell (1-3). Cartersville (4-0) is again the No. 1 ranked team in Class AAAA and has been all season. The Purple Hurricanes host 10th-ranked Cedartown (4-0) Friday night at Weinman Stadium for their 2017 Homecoming game and it is also the Region 5-AAAA opener for both teams. Also from the Canes' region, Sandy Creek (3-1) is ranked No. 8. The remainder of the Class AAAA Top Ten includes No. 2 Thomson, No. 3 Marist, No. 4 Blessed Trinity, No. 5 Jefferson, No. 6 Ridgeland, No. 7 Burke County, and No. 9 Woodward Academy. In Class AAA, Calhoun (3-1) and Bremen (4-0) from Adairsville's Region 6-AAA remain in the Top Ten. Both teams moved up one spot in the poll. Calhoun is ranked fifth. Bremen is No. 7.

Woodland softball was limited to only one hit Wednesday night in a non-region 8-0 five-inning shutout loss at Class 7A, sixth-ranked Lassiter. Jordan Duck had the only base hit for the Lady Cats. Lassiter improved to 16-5 on the season with their win. Woodland (7-11, 4-6 Region 7-AAAAA) has crucial region road games Thursday at Paulding County and Friday at Villa Rica. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts. The Lady Cats currently sit in fifth place in the region standings one-half game behind East Paulding. Only the top four teams advance to the state playoffs and Woodland's schedule includes a game remaining with East Paulding next Tuesday.

Cartersville High School’s volleyball team remained undefeated in Region 5-AAAA play Tuesday night with a pair of straight set wins over LaGrange and Sandy Creek at the Storm Center. The Lady Canes defeated LaGrange 25-20, 25-21 to open the night and then took down Sandy Creek 25-14, 25-15 in the evening’s finale’. “We were a little flat in the first match tonight and made a ton of errors,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran following the sweep. “For a while, it seemed we couldn’t do anything right against LaGrange, but we managed to squeak past the Grangers.” Against Sandy Creek, Cothran said his team played some of their best volleyball of the year. “We’ve had that match circled on our calendar all year,” said Cothran. “We knew it would be for the regular season region championship and the number one seed in the region tournament. The girls were firing on all cylinders and looked like a completely different team than that first match.” The coaching staff credited Catie Heilman for a strong performance along with the team’s setters. “Catie (Heilman) was really good tonight,” said Cothran. “Grace Hunter was also really good with her setting and attacking. Jayla Delgado and Anna Mathis played Libero and also played really well.” Cartersville (20-2, 6-0) travels to Northwest Whitfield to face the host Lady Bruins and Calhoun on Thursday with matches starting at 5 p.m. CASS VOLLEYBALL SPLITS REGION MATCHES The Cass volleyball team split a pair of home Region 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday night with visiting East Paulding and Rome. Cass lost a tough three set match with Rome 25-20, 12-25, 25-19, but bounced back to defeat East Paulding in straight sets 25-16 and 25-16. “We didn’t pull out both matches, but the girls really came together as a team and played some good ball tonight,” said a somewhat pleased Cass coach Chelsea Morris.
