Cass volleyball lost to both Murray County and Fannin County Thursday in very close and competitive matches at Fannin County High School. Murray County defeated the Lady Colonels 25-22, 25-21. In the nightcap, Cass fell in three sets to the host Fannin County. The Lady Colonels won the opening set 27-25, but dropped the final two sets 25-20 and 25-23. Cass (9-7) plays at Hiram on Tuesday, September 5 with Area 7-AAAAA matches against the host Lady Hornets and Carrollton at 5:30 pm. Woodland volleyball lost a pair of matches Thursday night at Calhoun falling to the host Lady Jackets and LaFayette by identical 25-13, 25-12 scores. Woodland (3-12) plays at Paulding County on Tuesday, September 5 with Area 7-AAAAA matches against the host Lady Patriots and Kell at 5:30 pm.

All four local high school fast pitch softball teams will square off at Stars Complex this Friday and Saturday for the Komatsu Bartow County Softball Championship. The event returns to the schedules of the local fast pitch teams for the first time since 2006 when Woodland took the title game. Semifinal games will be played Friday night with Adairsville (7-3) playing Woodland (5-4) in the opening game at 5 pm. Cass (1-10) and Cartersville (3-6) will play the second semifinal at 7 pm. On Saturday, the semifinal losers will play a third place game at 11 am followed by the championship game at 1 pm between Friday’s winners. Bartow Sports Zone and WBHF (100.3 FM / AM1450) will broadcast the Saturday games with live pregame coverage starting at 10:45 am.

Son of the late Randy Adcock and Marilyn and William Wade, the Tigers’ senior nose guard is an anchor for the Adairsville football team’s defensive line. He also sees time on offense in goal line and short-yardage situations. Also a member of the Adairsville wrestling program, Adcock is a leader for the Tigers’ defense and football team. “His leadership in the weight room and throughout the school are exemplary,” noted Adairsville head football coach Eric Bishop. “He is known as leader by example with a positive and encouraging attitude. He mentors younger players, always seems to have a smile on his face, and is quick with a kind word.” Adcock plans to attend college after his high school graduation. The August Elite Athlete of the Month from Woodland High School is Justice Carter. The junior running back also plays basketball and runs track. In the season opener, Carter rushed for 135 yards on 13 attempts and caught two passes for 20 yards. The son of Nundall Carter, Justice carries a 3.9 grade point average and plans to attend college to major in business after high school. “Justice is a great leader and a great athlete on our team,” said Wildcats’ head coach Tony Plott. “Those are great attributes, but he’s an even better person in the school and in our community.” Prem Patel is the August Elite Athlete of the Month for Cass High School. He is the son of Chandresh and Tejal Patel and a standout member of the Colonels’ cross country team. Patel has the fastest time on the team this season and has been improving each week. “He made a three-minute improvement recently,” said Cass cross country coach David Rawlins. “He is now in the 18-minute range for a 5K race. He runs so smooth and gracefully he looks like he is floating along. He will be a big part of our team’s push to reach the state meet.” Only a ninth grader, Patel also plays basketball and soccer. The Cartersville High School August Elite Athlete of the Month is Paris Poston. Daughter of Pete and Melanie Poston, the senior and multi-year starter is the current right fielder for the Lady Canes’ softball team. Poston currently leads the team and is in the top five in Region 5AAAA in hitting with a .538 batting average. She also has a home run and three doubles in the season’s first nine games without a strikeout. Poston has a .625 on-base percentage and has scored a dozen runs so far this season. “Paris’s success at the plate doesn’t come by surprise or luck,” noted Lady Canes head softball coach Shannon Dietrich. “She works hard all year to fine tune her swing and approach at the plate. Through her efforts, she has developed into a disciplined hitter with the ability to hit with power to all fields.” Poston takes AP and Honors courses academically and has received numerous academic and leadership recognitions at Cartersville High School. She carries a 3.8 grade point average and has yet to decide on her future collegiate major. On the softball diamond last season, Poston was named First Team All-Region, All-County, and was All-State Honorable Mention. She has committed to continue her softball playing career at Columbus State University after high school graduation. Woodland softball broke open a tight game with a five-run bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday night as the Lady Cats defeated visiting Paulding County, 7-1. Sarah Baynard (7 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 5K) tossed a four-hitter and struck out five Patriots to earn the pitching victory for Woodland. Caroline Higdon had two hits and one RBI for the Lady Cats. Jordan Duck drove in two runs and had one hit. Ansley Evans (RBI), Morgan Cooper (RBI), Audrey Morris, Morgan Bailey, and Bella Carnes had the other Woodland hits. Paulding County fell to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 7AAAAA. Woodland (5-4, 2-3) hosts Cartersville Wednesday at 5:30pm and plays at Villa Rica Thursday at 5:55 pm in another region game. East Paulding pitcher Maggie O’Kelley limited Cass to five hits and two earned runs while picking up the win. Kylie Manning had three hits and one RBI for the Raiders. Four other East Paulding batters had two hits each and Kaitlyn Walden drove in four runs. Sarah Moore had two hits for Cass. Sarah Fox drove in two runs with a double. Cartersville volleyball defeated Armuchee Tuesday night in Rome 25-8, 25-14 to improve to 11-2 on the season. “The girls did a great job of maintaining their focus,” said Cartersville coach Dustin Cothran. “Lauren Wenzell adjusted well to a new position tonight and our back row played well in receiving serves. It was a solid performance.” The Lady Canes pick up play in Region 5AAAA next Tuesday at Central-Carroll where they will play the Lady Lions and Cedartown. Cass volleyball split matches Tuesday with Hiram and Cedartown at Cedartown High School. Hiram defeated the Lady Colonels in three sets 25-17, 22-25, 25-10, but the Lady Colonels defeated Cedartown in straight sets, 25-19, 25-12. “Kyler Trouten had over 15 kills and both Keila Sanchez and Harmony Carr scored over 10 points each with their serves,” said Cass coach Chelsea Morris. Adairsville softball swept a doubleheader Monday with visiting Armuchee 9-8 and 12-6 in a pair of non-region games. In the opener, Sadye Johnson hit solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings and Havyn Isaac hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to help lead the Tigers. Alexa Varner and Natalie Burrow both had two hits and one RBI each in the 9-8 win. Loren Harris (7 IP, 8R, 4ER, 9H, 1BB, 7K) was the pitching winner for Adairsville in the first game. In Game 2, Harris was 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Burrow was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Sierra Tanner and Johnson (RBI) had two hits each. Three of the four PGA Tour players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and/or Athletic Motion Golf advanced to the next step in the FedEx Cup Playoffs this past weekend. Charles Howell III, Hudson Swafford, and Chris Kirk advanced to the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston this Friday, September 1 through Labor Day. The lone playoff qualifier from SHGA/AMG to not advance was Scott Stallings and he missed by the slimmest of margins. The Top 100 on the FedEx points list after last weekend’s Northern Trust Championship at Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, New York advanced to the second tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Stallings began The Northern Trust in 102nd place. He shot 71-70-70-73 to finish 4-over par and tied for 43rd. That left him in 101st place in the FedEx Cup standings — one spot out of the next tournament. Kirk (66-73-71-73, 3-over-par) tied for 40th at The Northern Trust and will begin this week’s Dell Technologies Championship in 97th place in the FedEx Cup race. He will need a big week. Only the top 70 will advance to the third playoffs tournament — the BMW Championship September 14-17. The top 30 from the BMW will play at East Lake in Atlanta in the TOUR Championship September 21-14. Swafford (70-72-71-71, 4-over-par) tied with Stallings for 43rd, but will advance to the Dell Technologies. He began last week in 37th and slipped one spot in the playoff standings to 38th. Howell (69-71-74-73, 7-over-par) started last weekend in 21st place in the playoff standings, but tied for 62nd in New York. He advances to Boston, but will start the tournament 28th in the FedEx Cup standings. Dustin Johnson won The Northern Trust in a playoff over Jordan Spieth. The two finished the 72-hole tournament 13-under-par. Johnson won on the first playoff hole with a birdie. On the PGA Champions Tour last weekend, SHGA player Joe Durant finished tied for 16th at the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington. Durant shot 70-67-70 (9-under-par) and is currently 15th in the Schwab Cup Money list. Jerry Kelly (19-under-par) won the Boeing Classic by one shot over Jerry Smith. The next event on the PGA Champions Tour is the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada Friday through Sunday. Kell’s Mia DeAngelis tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout Monday night at Cass to blank the Lady Colonels 8-0 in a Region 7AAAAA game. The Lady Longhorns broke open a scoreless game with eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. Gabby Galardo had two hits, including a double, to help lead Kell’s offense. Niya McDuffie drove in two runs and had one hit. Jodi Inglis, Savannah Markt, and Kaylie Casey had one hit and one RBI each. Kasey Blair and Lexie Scarpantonio had the other Longhorns hits. Sam Howard made a rare relief appearance Sunday for the Albuquerque Isotopes in an 8-1 loss to the division-leading Salt Lake Bees. Howard entered in the third inning with the ‘Topes trailing 5-0 and pitched the final seven frames for no decision. He was charged with three earned runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out two. On August 21, Howard was touched for eight hits, a walk, and four earned runs in four innings during a 4-2 road loss at the Sacramento River Cats. For the season the former Georgia Southern and Cartersville High School standout has a 5-8 record in 22 starts and one relief appearance. He was 1-4 with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts at Class AA Hartford and is 4-4 in 13 starts with a 4.08 ERA with Triple-A Albuquerque. He has 100 strikeouts in just over 121 innings and opponents have a .238 batting average against him. Colorado’s third round pick in 2014 is 26-29 with a 3.62 ERA in his minor league career. Albuquerque (63-70) is 4.5 games behind Salt Lake in the Pacific Coast Southern Division with only eight games remaining in the regular season. Howard is likely under consideration to be one of the expanded roster call-ups for the major league Rockies in September. He made a pre-season start for the big league club in the Cactus League this spring. We will know one way or the other in only a few days. In the Advanced Class A California League, Cartersville’s Connor Justus is winding down the regular season with the Inland Empire 66ers. Justus scored two runs and drove in a run Sunday in a 7-4 win over division-leading Rancho Cucamonga. The RBI was his 31st of the year. The LA Angels’ 5th round pick in 2016 out of Georgia Tech hit .276 last year with stops in Orem, Utah (Rookie Level) and Burlington, Iowa (Class A). The 66ers every day shortstop has slipped to a .201 batting average this season, but has been among the league leaders in walks with 58 for a .317 on-base percentage. He has five home runs and 26 extra base hits. Defensively, Justus has a .955 fielding percentage in 417 total chances with 107 games at shortstop and two at second base. He has been part of 55 double plays this season.
