The Auburn University baseball team got the call on Monday afternoon from the NCAA. The Tigers are headed to the Tallahassee Regional at Florida State and will play Central Florida Friday at 12 noon in their tournament opener. The double-elimination regional will also feature an opening evening game between the host Seminoles and Tennessee Tech. Florida State (39-20) is the top seed in the regional, followed by UCF (40-20), Auburn (35-24), and Tennessee Tech (40-19). Cartersville native and former Hurricanes' southpaw, Elliott Anderson, is a freshman pitcher with the Auburn Tigers. Anderson made 13 relief appearances for Auburn this season and worked 12.1 innings. He finished with a 6.57 ERA and a 1-0 record. He was also part of two shutouts and struck out nine. He faced 52 batters who hit for a .365 average against him. Auburn is in the postseason for their 20th regional appearance in program history. It is only the second Tigers' appearance, however, since 2010. The Tigers have now been sent to Tallahassee eight times for regional play where they have won the regional twice in their previous seven trips. Auburn was 1-2 at the site in 2015. Auburn was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation earlier this season and were challenging for a national seed, but a seven-game losing streak that included sweep losses to Alabama and LUS halted those aspirations. The Tigers have lost 10 of 13 games to close out the season and were one of the final four at-large teams to make the field of 64. Texas A&M, UCLA, and Michigan were the other last at-large teams included. At the peak of their season, Auburn was 19th in the RPI before falling to 45th in that ranking. The Tigers finished the season ranked 23rd by Baseball America and did win seven of their ten Southeastern Conference series. The UNC-Greensboro baseball team — with local Cartersville players Michael Goss and Jo Jo Underwood on the roster — earned its first Southern Conference Tournament title Sunday afternoon, run-ruling the Furman Paladins in the SoCon Championship Game. As a result the Spartans are an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championship Tournament’s field of 64. UNCG learned Monday afternoon that their Road to Omaha will go through Clemson, SC this weekend. The Spartans, host Tigers, St. John's Red Storm and the Vanderbilt Commodores are the teams placed in the Clemson Regional. PHOTOS: (L-R) Goss, Underwood Goss is coming off a Southern Conference Tournament performance that earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. In the two-game finals, Goss was 5-for-9 with a home run and six RBIs. He enters the Clemson Regional with a season .320 batting average, 8 homers, and 52 RBIs in 53 games with 194 at-bats. Underwood did not see action in the SoCon Tourney, but has been a key contributor all season with a .314 batting average, two homers, and nine RBIs in 51 at-bats across 25 games. He has seen action at both catcher and third base. UNCG (35-22), it the Spartans first NCAA Regional since 1997, will face off with Clemson Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to open play in the double-elimination tournament. St. John's will play Vanderbilt in the first game of the day. Clemson (39-19) is the top seed but enters the NCAA Tournament having dropped both of their games in the ACC Tournament. Vanderbilt (33-22-1) is the second seed. The Commodores finished third in the SEC East at 15-13-1. St. Johns, a member of the Big East Conference, will be the three seed. Brock Nixon of Acworth and Buck Brumlow of Cartersvile both collected wins over the weekend at the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event at the University of Georgia Course with Nixon garnering the overall championship. In the final round, Nixon — a high school junior in the 16-19-year division — had the low round of the tournament that included six birdies and a bogey to finish 3-under-par for the tournament (73-66–— 139). PHOTO: (L-R) Nixon, Brumlow Brumlow, a Cartersville eighth grader, was playing in his first-ever Southeastern event and fired a 3-under-par 68 with six birdies in the opening round. Brumlow then shot even in the final round to win the 14-15-year division and tied Nixon for the overall (68-71) at 139. The two went to a playoff for the overall title with Nixon winning on the first playoff hole. The next events on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour are the Achasta Junior at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, GA and the Montgomery Country Club Junior in Montgomery, AL. Both events are May 31-June 1.

The Oklahoma Sooners, with assistant coach Jim Garren of Cartersville, will head into Monday’s final round of stroke play at the NCAA DI Men’s Golf Championship trailing first place Vanderbilt by only one shot. Vanderbilt shot an impressive 8-under-par during Sunday’s third round. The Commodores, now 18-under-par for 54 holes, lead Oklahoma, UNLV, and USC by one shot. Oklahoma shot 4-under-par Sunday to remain tied for second place. UNLV led after two rounds and shot 3-under-par Sunday. Southern California moved up four spots in the standings and matched Vanderbilt Sunday with an 8-under-par day. The stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Illinois will conclude Monday. The field of 30 teams will be cut to the top 15 teams for Monday’s round. The top eight teams after 72 holes will advance to match play that will begin Tuesday morning. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played Tuesday. The Championship match will be Wednesday. Cartersville native and Oklahoma assistant coach Jim Garren was excited about his team’s chances moving forward and about how his players performed in windy conditions. “Today was a great day. The course definitely played tougher and we were in the final group so we had to deal with the most wind. Vandy and USC played great in the wave ahead of us. In fact, they played really well with the pin placements we saw today.” Max McGreevy led the Sooners with a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday over the 7,300-yard Rich Harvest Farms course. McGreevy’s round included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th (see video). Blaine Hale (70), Grant Hirschman (72), and Rylee Reinertson (74) contributed the other scoring rounds Sunday for Oklahoma and all three made clutch birdies on the final hole. Brad Dalke struggled with a non-counting 79. Each team has five players with the best four scores counting during stroke play. “Our guys fought today,” continued Garren. “As much as we had it going yesterday, today was a battle the other direction. Brad (Dalke) struggled which means the other 4 had to save every shot possible. I am so proud of their fight today and then to step up on 18 and go birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle. Man, what a feeling!” The other Cartersville connection at the NCAA Championship is head coach Bryant Odom of Kennesaw State. His Owls’ team won the Atlantic Sun Championship and tied for second at their NCAA Regional at College Grove, TN to make the 30-team finals field, but KSU struggled in Illinois and failed to make the cut. The Owls finished 40-over -par and 29th in the standings, two shots behind Purdue and one shot ahead of Clemson. Oklahoma is in excellent position to grab one of the eight match play spots following Monday’s conclusion of stroke play, but Garren says they want more. “Tomorrow we are going out to try and win the stroke play portion. You can't go out there simply thinking about getting one of the eight spots. Our goal is to win every time we tee it up and tomorrow will be no different. Big big day tomorrow,” concluded Garren. It required an extra game in the finals, but Michael Goss and the UNC-Greensboro Spartans captured the Southern Conference Championship Tournament title Sunday afternoon with a 13-1 win over Furman. The 4th-seeded Paladins, who entered the finals with one loss in the double-elimination tournament, won the first game of the finals’ matchup earlier on Sunday, 6-4. Goss, a former Cartersville Hurricanes and Chattanooga State CC first baseman, saved one of his best plate performances of the year for the final game of the tournament played at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC. The redshirt senior hit a two-run homer to put the Spartans up 2-0 in the first inning and drove in two more runs with singles in the third and seventh frames. Goss, who was named to the SoCon Championship All-Tournament Team also scored two runs and finished 3-for-4 in the game. In the championship round opener earlier on Sunday, Goss was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. He was 3-for-14 in the first three games of the tournament with two runs, three RBIs, and a walk. Goss will enter the NCAA Regionals with a .320 batting average, 8 home runs, and 52 RBIs in 53 games with 194 at-bats. Another former Cartersville Hurricanes standout, Jo Jo Underwood did not see action in the SoCon Tournament for the Spartans but has been a key contributor all season with a .314 batting average, two homers, and nine RBIs in 51 at-bats across 25 games seeing time at both catcher and third base. Third-seeded UNCG (35-22) had tournament wins over Samford (6-3), East Tennessee State (6-4), and Furman (12-8) to reach the finals without a loss. Furman had wins over Wofford (13-3), top-seeded Mercer (11-6), and East Tennessee State to reach the championship round. UNC-Greensboro is now an automatic qualifier for one of the NCAA Regionals. The Spartans will likely be a 4-seed and face one of the national seeds in their first game, but that announcement will come on Memorial Day. The tournament title is a first-ever for the UNCG program and the Spartans will be making their first NCAA Regional appearance since 1997. The full NCAA tournament field will be announced on ESPN2 Monday at 12 noon.

The Cartersville Little League 7/8 year-old A baseball team won the District 1 championship Saturday by completing a three-game sweep of Rockmart at Nathan Dean Park in Rockmart. Cartersville won the best-of-five series with final scores of 8-6, 9-8, and 10-7. Two rounds have been completed in the 2017 DI Men’s National Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinios and all 30 teams are in contention for a top 15 finish after Sunday’s round. A pair of Cartersville natives are coaches for teams in the Championship. Bryant Odom is the head coach at Kennesaw State and Jim Garren is the assistant coach for Oklahoma. With 36 holes completed, Garren’s Sooners are in second place and only one shot behind UNLV. Oklahoma shot 9-under-par Saturday as did UNLV. Illinois is third at 11-under with Auburn and Vanderbilt tied for fourth at 10-under-par. Kennesaw State dropped five spots after Saturday’s round to 29th place. Odom’s Owls are 21-over-par. Following Sunday’s 18 holes, the thirty team field will be narrowed to the top fifteen teams with a final 18 holes of stroke play on Monday. The top eight teams after Monday will advance to match play Tuesday with the NCAA finals on Wednesday. Oklahoma had a superb day on Saturday. “Today was awesome,” said Sooners’ assistant coach Garren. “We’re one shot back at the National Championship! We would have taken that to start the day.” All five Sooners’ players shot par or better on Saturday on the par-72 7,300 yard Rich Harvest Farms layout. Oklahoma’s Rylee Reinertson shot 68 to lead Oklahoma in the second round. Blaine Hale fired a 69 and Brad Dalke shot a 2-under-par 70. Max McGreevy and Grant Hirschman both shot Even-par 72s. “Hole number 17 is a hard hole,” added Garren. “We had some mental errors on that hole and that made it even tougher on us. I’m super proud of our guys’ effort, however, we played more in the rain than anyone last night. We had a 4 am wake-up call and the guys absolutely got after it today.” At the mid-way point of the stroke play portion of the tournament, Garren says the Sooners will try to do more of what got them to their current position. “The game plan will be pretty much the same going forward,” the coach concluded. Meanwhile, coach Odom and his Kennesaw State players have some ground to make-up. On Saturday, the Owls got a 2-under-par 70 from Chris Guglielmo. Termoana Beaucousin shot 75 and Jake Fendt fired a 76. The Owls then had to count a 79 from Pablo Rodriguez-Taber and Connor Coffee shot 80. Play continues Sunday with tee times starting at 7:07 am CT. Oklahoma starts on Hole 1 at 8:13 am and is paired with UNLV and Illinois. The 2017 Adairsville High School baseball team had three players selected to the All-Region 6AAA Team. Sam Seaman, Kyler Pelfrey, and Caden Gibbs were the Tigers selected by the coaches of Region 6AAA to join 32 other players for the honor from the nine other schools in the league. Seaman finished the season with a .404 batting average the included 38 hits, seven doubles, three triples and three home runs. That was good for a .638 slugging percentage and 23 RBIs. The senior was 2-3 on the mound with a pair of saves. Seaman worked 51 innings with a 2.90 ERA. He fanned 60 opposing batters. Pelfrey had 38 hits, two doubles, two triples, and one home run for a .365 batting average in 2017. He wrapped up his junior season with a .452 slugging percentage and stole five bases. Gibbs, another junior, was 5-0 on the mound with one save for the Tigers. He finished the year with 41 innings pitched. Coach Billy Roper's Tigers were 10-19 in 2017 and finished 5-13 in Region 6AAA. With only 15 of the 30 teams finished with Round 1, Vanderbilt leads Auburn by a narrow margin at the NCAA Men’s Division Golf Championship in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The Commodores have players with holes 16 through 18 remaining in their opening round that was suspended for darkness late Friday. Vanderbilt is currently 8-under-par as a team. The leading team in the clubhouse is Auburn at 6-under-par. All five Tigers have completed their first round. Oklahoma State and Southern California were in third place and fourth place when play was suspended. The Cowboys stand at 5-under-par and the Trojans were 4-under-par when play was stopped. Both teams have players needing to complete holes 16-18 in their opening rounds. Oklahoma, with Cartersville’s Jim Garren as an assistant coach, had players on holes 8 through 10 when play was halted. The Sooners are currently tied for 11th at even par. The Sooners top player, Max McGreevy is 1-under-par through eight holes. Grant Hirschman is also 1-under-par through eight holes. Brad Dalke (EVEN through 10 holes); Rylee Reinertson (+2 through 9 holes); and Blaine Hale (+2 through 10 holes) round out the partial Sooner scores. Oklahoma started on Hole 10 at the 7,300-yard Rich Harvest Farms Course, so the Sooners have most of the front nine to complete before beginning Saturday’s second round. Play is scheduled to continue Saturday at 6:30 am CST. Teams that finished their opening rounds will begin the second round at 7:15 am CST. Bryant Odom, also from Cartersville, is the head coach for Kennesaw State. The Owls were led in the opening round by sophomore Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres who shot an even-par 72. KSU struggled down the stretch of round one, however, and finished the opening 18 holes at 9-over-par. The Owls are tied for 24th place. Jake Fendt (73), Connor Coffee (75), Chris Guglielmo (77), and Teremoana Beaucousin (77) round out the remainder of the KSU scores. "Overall it was a pretty good day, we just didn't finish well but I think our best golf is still ahead of us," head coach Bryant Odom said in a Kennesaw State University news release. "Chris (Guglielmo) played the last few holes pretty well so he got some momentum for tomorrow and Pablo had a good day overall with a hot start. "It is tough out there and a championship course. The wind was blowing and it looks like we might have some weather coming in this afternoon, so you never know what is going to happen this afternoon," Odom said. "We're not out of it by any means. It is a disappointing finish but it is still early.” The thirty team field will be narrowed to the top fifteen after 54-holes of stroke play that continues through Monday. The top eight teams will begin match play Tuesday with the NCAA finals on Wednesday. "The greens weren't as fast as we thought they might be, so I think guys might have tentative in a few spots," Odom said. "Overall, there is a lot of pressure with it being a championship, but once you get into the round it is just like any other round. I think they will be a little more comfortable tomorrow, knowing to expect. "We need everyone playing well early and we didn't have everyone doing that today," Odom added. "There are some birdies hole out there and I don't think we did that today. Number 18 for instance, we played it at 3-over par and we need to be at least even or under par on that hole. In a press release today by the school, Shannon Boatfield has been named the new boys high school basketball coach at Excel Christian Academy. Boatfield responded regarding his new position, “I'm so excited about the privilege to join the mission of Excel Christian Academy. There's such an abundance of opportunity in front of us with the platform basketball provides to invest in the lives of our student-athletes and their families.” A native of Marietta, GA, Shannon has served as the Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) since 2011. He and his wife, Monique, have two young sons, and they reside here in Cartersville, GA. “Shannon exemplifies all that we look for in a Christ-centered man, educator, and coach. His passion for basketball and leading young people is beyond reproach, as evidenced by his years serving our youth here in north Georgia with the FCA. We are truly blessed to have Shannon with us, helping to shape the lives of the young men on our high school basketball team.” stated school President, Danny Deems. Cartersville Little League wrapped up its league playoffs earlier this week and Bartow County Little League is in the final rounds of their playoffs as we conclude the 2017 season and get ready for tournament team selections, district, and state playoffs. The Crackers won the Cartersville Little League (major) playoffs with a 6-1 victory over the Indians in the championship game. The Indians had edged the Braves, 10-9, in the semifinals to reach the finals. In the Bartow County Little League, five teams remain alive in the single-elimination playoff tournament going into Thursday night. In the opening round, the Cubs edged the Cardinals 10-9 and the Mets defeated the Twins 9-2. In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Orioles doubled-up the Cubs 10-5; the Tigers defeated the Giants 8-5; and the Braves slipped by the Mets 4-3. Thursday night, the Rangers play the Athletics in the final quarterfinal round game at 6 pm with the winner to face the Braves at 7:30 pm. The second semifinal matchup is at 6 pm Thursday between the Tigers and Orioles. The two semifinal winners will play for the BCLL playoff championship Friday night.
