Bartow County Little League held its 2017 Opening Day Ceremonies Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park. Although Bartow County has held a Little League Softball charter for several years and was a Little League Baseball organization in the 1970s and 80s, this season marks the return of Little League Baseball affiliation for Bartow. Most college baseball and softball teams around the country have started conference play and are deep into their regular season schedules as we enter the final week of March. Local players in multiple programs made significant contributions this past week. Two local athletes playing professional basketball overseas are wrapping up their 2016-17 seasons this week. BASEBALL BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Junior, OF, Cass HS). . . was 4-for-13 this past week, scored four runs, stole a base, and was hit by a pitch as the Saints won three of four games. Limestone defeated non-conference Francis Marion and won two of three at Southern Wesleyan. Etheridge is hitting .294 with a homer and nine RBIs. Limestone (18-13, 7-8 Conference Carolinas) plays a non-conference game at Carson-Newman Tuesday, hosts non-conference Lander University Wednesday, and hosts a three-game weekend conference series with Emmanuel Friday and Saturday. CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . . went 3-for-4, scored a run, and drove in two runs last Friday in a 9-4 win over Armstrong State. The Jags swept a three-game conference series with the Pirates. Evans has a .361 batting average with a homer and five RBIs. Fowler went 2 innings, allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits and a walk. He has a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings across seven appearances and two starts. Batters are hitting .250 against him and he carries a 1-0 record. MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 1B, Cartersville HS). . . started in one of the Spartans’ three games this past weekend with Western Carolina. He went 3-for-4 and scored two runs in an 8-2 win on Sunday as UNC-Greensboro won two of three games in the conference series. Goss has a .333 batting average and has started 20 of 22 games for UNCG this season. He has two home runs, 14 RBIs, with eight extra base hits. The Spartans (15-9, 2-1) host a non-conference game with UNC-Asheville Tuesday and return to Southern Conference play Friday through Sunday at East Tennessee State University. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Sophomore, 1B, Adairsville HS). . . the Mercer University commit was 3-for-15 with three walks, two runs scored, and one RBI in four games last week. The Cougars won twice at Tusculum College JV and won one of three conference games at Columbia State CC. McDermott has six homers and a .363 batting average with 23 RBIs in 26 games this season. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Junior, OF, Adairsville HS). . . hit safely in all five games last week for the Mountain Lions. He was 6-for-20 with seven RBIs, a pair of homers, five runs scored, and one stolen base. YHC defeated Anderson University (SC) last Tuesday, lost at Southern Wesleyan Wednesday, and won one of three conference games at home against Georgia College over the weekend. Washington has a .392 batting average with 16 RBIs in 18 games this season. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Senior, RHP, Cass HS). . . was called on to enter a tied game in the bottom of the ninth Sunday at University of Montevallo. The Falcons had the winning run at second base with one out. Wilson was asked to intentionally walk the first batter faced, then was touched for a ground ball single that resulted in Montevallo’s third walk-off win of the weekend series. Wittenberg played collegiately at Oklahoma State University and was a 2003 finalist in the U.S. Amateur and member of the U.S. Walker Cup team. He also finished 13th at the Masters Tournament in 2004 as an amateur, the year he turned pro. Cartersville is ranked fifth in the latest release of the Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine High School Baseball poll. The Canes have plenty of company from their own Region 5AAAA. LaGrange is ranked No. 2, Troup No. 4, and Cedartown is No. 6. In Class 5A, Carrollton and Kell from Region 7AAAAA are in the Top Ten. Carrollton is ranked fifth and Kell is ninth. Villa Rica and East Paulding received consideration from the same league. Region 7AAAAA is the region containing Cass and Woodland. From Adairsville's Region 6AAA, Ringgold is ranked fourth in Class AAA. North Murray and Calhoun also received consideration. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday at East Georgia State CC in Swainsboro. The host Bobcats earned a split of the four-game Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association series, winning 4-0 and 6-4. Georgia Highlands won the first two games of the series 17-0 last Tuesday and 11-2 Friday night. East Georgia pitcher, Payton Phillips, tossed a complete-game two-hitter in the opener and recorded 10 strikeouts against the Chargers. In the second game, Georgia Highlands took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before East Georgia scored six runs over their next three frames to take a 6-2 advantage. A pair of Chargers’ runs in the sixth inning made it closer, but GHC fell by a 6-4 final. Bronco O’Brien had the only Chargers’ hits in the first game. Colby Taylor (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 5K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Sam Sowerbrower pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Matt Vaccro had three hits including a double in the second game for GHC. Drew Wilson suffered the pitching loss. He allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks. Wilson struck out three. Tyler Sellers struck out two and walked two, but allowed no hits or runs over the final three innings. East Georgia improved to 15-13 overall and 5-3 in conference action. Georgia Highlands (22-11, 2-2) plays Andrew College in a four-game, conference series that begins at Andrew College Tuesday night and will conclude with three games at LakePoint Friday and Saturday. Friday’s single game is scheduled for 6pm and Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1pm.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a doubleheader at Gordon State College Saturday, winning 15-1 and 16-3. Every GHC starter recorded at least one hit in the doubleheader. Brianna Fickes, Chargers’ first baseman (in photo), was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with three home runs, three walks, and seven RBIs. Shay Wooten and Mackenzy McFarland also hit home runs. Rebecca Meade recorded two wins in the pitching circle. She tossed 8 and 1/3 of the ten innings played. She allowed a pair of runs on only five hits, but only one was earned. Meade fanned six batters. Micayla McCoy pitched and inning and two-thirds. She yielded a pair of earned runs on two hits. The Chargers (29-8, 11-5 GCAA) play a home doubleheader Tuesday with Georgia Military College beginning at 3pm and will play the Brewton-Parker College JV on Saturday. Each win at this point for Georgia Highlands establishes a new single-season win mark. The previous school record for wins in a season was 27.

The Woodland girls track and field team hosted and won the Woodland Invitational Saturday at Woodland High School. The Woodland boys finished third. The Lady Cats finished 11 points better than second place North Paulding with River Ridge finishing third. North Paulding won the boys meet, followed by Hiram and Woodland in the top three. Cartersville’s girls and boys both finished seventh. Georgia Highlands College broke open a tight game in the middle innings Friday to rout East Georgia State CC, 11-2. The Bobcats led the Chargers 2-1 after three innings, but GHC scored six times in the fourth inning and added four more runs across the fifth and sixth innings to take control. The Chargers out hit East Georgia, ten to four. Matthew Norton (7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 1K) started on the mound and picked up the pitching win for Georgia Highlands. Kyle Brady (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) tossed a pair of shutout innings in the eighth and ninth. Grant Bodison had three hits, scored twice, and drove in two runs for the Chargers. Isreal Zackery drove in four runs with a double and a triple. Matt Vaccro (2 RBI), Bronco O’Brien (RBI), Caleb McElwaney, Devin Bilardello, and John White added one hit each. East Georgia falls to 13-13 overall and 3-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with their second straight loss to the Chargers. GHC won the series opener Tuesday at LakePoint, 17-0. Georgia Highlands (22-9, 2-0 GCAA) will wrap up the four-game conference series with East Georgia Saturday with a doubleheader in Swainsboro.

East Paulding pitcher Will Prater limited Woodland to only three hits and three walks Friday evening in a 6-0 Region 7AAAAA shutout at Woodland. Prater struck out ten Wildcats as the Raiders moved to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in region games. East Paulding scored five runs over the first three innings and added one more in the fifth. Sean Cheely (RBI, double) and Jody Waddell had two hits each for the Raiders to lead their offense. Garrett Cornett, Emmanuel Jones, and Jordan Lee had the Woodland base hits. Grayson Bagwell (1.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) was the Woodland starter on the mound and took the loss. Cauy Williams (5.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) finished the game on the bump for the Wildcats. Woodland (9-7, 0-4) hosts Rome Monday and will travel to the Wolves’ home field on Wednesday.

The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams both defeated Cedartown Friday night in Region 5AAAA games. The Cass girls and boys teams were both turned back by Villa Rica by a single goal. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 6, CEDARTOWN 3 James Chege scored two goals Friday night for Cartersville. Jonathan Cruz, Cesar Abeja, Pedro Robledo, and Jake Hacker added one goal each. Cedartown falls to 7-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in region play. Cartersville (8-1, 4-0) has a non-region matches at Darlington Monday at 5:30pm and plays at region-rival LaGrange Tuesday at 8pm. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 9, CEDARTOWN 0 Chloe Davis scored four goals for Cartersville, including three in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Claire Chaote assisted on the first two Davis goals and scored a goal herself later in the first half. Micah Vance scored twice. Kaylyn Donegan and Kelly Betancourt scored a goal. Caroline Bagwell had two assists. Kayla Carpenter and LaShun Williams added assists. The Lady Canes improved to 7-4 on the season and 3-2 in Region 5AAAA with their shutout victory Friday night. Cedartown falls to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in region play. Cartersville is scheduled for a non-region game at Darlington Monday at 5:30pm and travels to region-foe LaGrange Tuesday at 6pm. VILLA RICA BOYS 4, CASS 3 Villa Rica scored three times in the first half to take a 3-0 lead to the intermission, but Cass would challenge in the second half. Anthony Robledo scored at the 32:34 mark and again with 18:31 remaining to narrow the Wildcats lead to 4-2. Villa Rica added their fourth goal between the two Robledo counters. Nelson Arroyo and Felipe Albarran had assists. Brandon Romero scored for the Colonels on a penalty kick with 1:38 remaining. Romero also recorded 18 saves in goal. Villa Rica improved to 6-4-2 overall and is now 3-2 in region games. Cass (2-9, 2-4 Region 7AAAAA) plays at Kell next Thursday at 8pm. VILLA RICA GIRLS 3, CASS 2 The Lady Colonels led 2-1 late, but the Lady Wildcats scored twice in the final ten minutes to edge Cass. Kelsey Rivera scored a pair of goals for Cass directly from corner kicks. Villa Rica improved to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass is now 5-6 overall and 3-3 in region play. The Lady Colonels host Paulding County Tuesday at 5:45pm.

Murray County scored ten runs in their first three frames Friday night and then held on for a 10-8 Region 6AAA win at Adairsville. The Tigers out hit the Indians nine to seven, but left eight men on base. Adairsville led 2-1 after one inning before the Indians posted nine runs over the next two frames to take a 10-2 lead. The Tigers added a single run in the third, two more in the fifth, and rallied in the bottom of the seventh for three more runs only come up just short. Taylor Whitley suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville, charged with eight earned runs. Levi Atkinson and Garrett Mishoe also pitched for the Tigers. Murray County utilized a trio of pitchers — Cole Sparks, Brendan Owenby, and Kyle Dotson — in their win. Halen Huskins had three hits, including a double and two RBIs for Adairsville. Hunter HIce added two hits and three RBIs. Sam Seaman had two hits including a double. Whitley drove in a run with one hit and Kyler Pelfrey had a hit. Logan Palmer drove in four runs with two hits that included a double. Kyle Dotson had two hits and two RBIs for Murray County. Murray County moved to 7-10 overall and 4-2 in region games. Adairsville (5-10, 2-4) plays at Bremen in another Region 6AAA game Tuesday at 5:55pm.

A pair of Villa Rica pitchers limited the Cass bats to only two hits Friday night as the Wildcats completed a two-game region series sweep of the Colonels at home, 4-1. Nick Corkill and Jesse Martinez combined to walk six and struck out three. The only Cass run came in the top of the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Villa Rica scored three times in the bottom of the third and added another run in the fourth. Clay Means and Steven Spell had the only Cass base hits. Corkill had a three-hit game at the plate for the Wildcats. Cass starting pitcher Cody Johnson (2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 7BB, 2K) did not get through the third frame and was tagged with the loss. Evan Hinton (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 1K) completed the game on the mound for the Colonels. Villa Rica improved to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in region play. Cass (11-8, 4-2) travels to Carrollton Monday and hosts the Trojans Wednesday in their next Region 7AAAAA series.
