Victor Guevara completed a hat trick in the first half and finished the night with four goals as the Cartersville boys' soccer team routed visiting Model Thursday night, 10-2. Sean Holton scored a pair of goals for the Canes, while Pedro Ghanem, Barrett Hester, Cesar Abeja, and Houston Read all added a goal. Guevara and Elian Abeja each recorded a pair of assists on the night. Pedro Robledo, Rhett Pasley, Leo Sanchez, Jair Ramos, Grant Farmer and Read all had one assist. Model starts the season 0-1 as a result of the loss. Cartersville (1-0-1) will host North Cobb Christian Tuesday for a 7:30pm kickoff. LADY CANES 7, MODEL 0 The Cartersville girls' soccer team defeated Model 7-0 Thursday and improved to 2-0. Chloe Davis and LaShaun Williams scored two goals each for the Lady Canes.

Emily Collum and Chloe Cochran each scored goals as the Adairsville Lady Tigers won on the road Thursday night at North Springs High School. Cochran put Adairsville ahead 32 minutes into the game off an assist from Emily Collum. Collum then scored the second Adairsville goal at the 40 minute mark of the first half for the Lady Tigers’s 2-0 lead at the intermission.The two teams played a scoreless second half. North Springs fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss. Adairsville (2-0) will host Darlington on Tuesday. NORTH SPRINGS BOYS 8, ADAIRSVILLE 0 The Adairsville boys' soccer team was shutout Thursday night at North Springs, 8-0. "We fought hard, but lack of experience is playing a big part of our performance right now," noted Tigers' coach Kelly Abernathy. "We're young so we will improve as the season goes along." Adairsville (0-1) will host Darlington Tuesday.

The Cartersville High School tennis teams both improved season records to 2-1 Wednesday with wins over visiting Cherokee. Visiting Bryant & Stratton College (NY) rallied from three runs down in the top of the seventh inning Wednesday night at LakePoint to tie Georgia Highlands College, but the Chargers scored in the bottom of the inning to win 6-5 and sweep the two-game set. Brandon Bell tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 5-5. He later scored on an error that resulted from an outfield throw to home after the second out of the inning was recorded. The throw banged off the catcher's gear and got far enough away from the plate for Bell to score the walk-off run. Nick Fink homered for the Chargers and Brandon Bell tripled in the bottom of the seventh leading to the eventual game-winning run. Josh Kiser was 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Nick Piccapietra was 2-for-2 with a walk and scored two runs. David Hussey finished with a pair of hits and stole a base, while Matt Vaccro added one hit for the GHC offense. Britt Buckelew (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB) picked up the pitching victory as the pitcher of record in the final inning for Georgia Highlands. Peyton Tennant and Jeremiah Woods (1 IP, 0R, 0BB, 1H) also pitched in relief of Chargers’ starter Lake Lovvorn (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 5K) who left the game leading 5-2, but received no decision. Georgia Highlands (4-4) hosts a three-game series with Lincoln Trail College (IL) beginning with a single game Friday at LakePoint at 6pm followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1pm.

The Cartersville girls soccer team defeated visiting Villa Rica Wednesday night in a non-region match, 3-2. Chloe Davis scored twice for the Lady Canes and Caroline Bagwell added the other Cartersville goal. The loss evened the Lady Wildcats early season record at 1-1. Cartersville (1-0) hosts Model Thursday at 5:30pm. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2, VILLA RICA 2 The Cartersville boys played visiting Villa Rica to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night in non-region action. Villa Rica took an early 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Both goals came off free kicks into the box. The Canes’ Pedro Robledo scored an unassisted goal to cut the Wildcats’ lead in half in the first six minutes of the second half and Cesar Abeja scored the tying goal with 20 minutes remaining on a free kick header with the assist coming from Robledo. With the tie, Villa Rica's season mark moved to 2-0-1. Cartersville (0-0-1) hosts Model Thursday at 7:30pm.

The Cass baseball team rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday to take a 9-2 lead over visiting Gilmer. The Colonels then held on down the stretch for an 11-6 non-region win. Clay Means went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the leadoff spot to lead the Cass offensive attack. Tyler Hendon also contributed heavily with a productive 2-for-4 performance that included a double and three RBIs. Cody Johnson (RBI), Jake Collum, Nathan Smith (RBI), Gavin Young (RBI), Garrett Brookshire, and Bryson Markley each added one hit each for the Colonels. Cass starter Austin Pruett (4 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) earned the pitching win. Means (2 IP, 0 ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) worked the fifth and sixth frames in relief and Steven Spell (1 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K) wrapped up the seventh inning on the mound for the Colonels. Cass (2-0) plays at Adairsville Saturday at 1pm and will play at Sonoraville next Tuesday at 5:55pm.

The Adairsville High School Precision Air Rifle team defeated Cass 1119 to 1076 last Saturday in an Area 10 rifle match. Seniors Gillian Ballard and Lance Stark led the scoring with scores of 283 and 282, respectively. Junior T.J. Bosdell shot a 277 and freshman David Mahan (photo) also scored a 277. Adairsville (7-1) travels to Lafayette February 23 where they will compete against Area 10 leader, Lafayette High School.

The 2017 GHSA State Tournament brackets for local teams. The Cass girls, Cartersville boys, and Adairsville boys teams begin their respective state tournaments this weekend. The Lady Colonels will host their first round game Friday night. The Canes and Tigers will be on the road on Saturday. The Cass girls (20-7) host the first round of the Class AAAAA State Tournament Friday night at 7pm. The Lady Colonels are the No. 2 seed out of Region 7AAAAA and will play 3rd-seeded Columbia (16-7) out of Region 5AAAAA. The Cass/Columbia winner advances to the second round to play the Morrow/Warner Robins winner. The Cartersville boys (20-6) open the Class AAAA State Tournament Saturday at Marist. The Canes are the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAA. Marist (15-11) is the 2-seed from Region 7AAAA. The game is scheduled for a 5pm tip. The Cartersville/Marist winner will play either Burke County or Carver-Columbus in the second round. The Adairsville boys (16-13) will also be on the road for a first round game Saturday at 7pm in the Class AAA State Tournament. The Tigers play at Morgan County. Adairsville is the 4-seed from Region 6AAA and Morgan County (20-5) is a 1-seed from Region 8AAA. The Morgan County/Adairsville survivor will play either Peach County or Tattnall County in the second round. Emily Collum scored goals in the third and 21st minutes on breakaways as the Lady Tigers topped visiting Dalton Tuesday night. The lone Dalton goal came in the 48th minute to cut the Adairsville lead in half, but the Lady Tigers were able to hold off the Lady Catamounts down the stretch for the season-opening win. Adairsville (1-0) plays Thursday at North Springs.

The Woodland boys soccer team won its second straight game Tuesday night with a 4-2 home victory over Pickens. Miguel Hernandez scored a pair of goals off assists from Levi Brandenburg and Trey Jennings to help lead the Wildcats to victory. Raul Gonzales scored a goal and added an assist on a Cesar Pineda goal. Preston Godfrey assisted on the Gonzalez goal. The Wildcats (2-1) play next at Chapel Hill on Friday, February 24. The Woodland girls team played Pickens to a 2-2 draw Tuesday night. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored a pair of goals for the Lady Cats -- one in the first half and the other just before the midway point of the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Pickens responded with two goals later in the second half to earn the tie. The Lady Cats (0-1-1) play again this Friday, February 17 at Cherokee.

The Cass High School soccer teams both lost Tuesday evening at Sonoraville. The Lady Colonels were edged 2-1 and the Colonels fell 4-2 to the Phoenix. SONORAVILLE GIRLS 2, CASS 1 The Lady Phoenix scored first, but Cass’ Logan Vermaas tied the game off an assist from Kelsey Rivera with 25 minutes remaining in the first half to tie the game 1-1 at the intermission. Sonoraville (2-1) managed the only goal of the second half with approximately 20 minutes remaining. That goal would provide the margin of victory. The Lady Colonels (2-1) play at unbeaten Southeast Whitfield Friday at 5:30pm. SONORAVILLE BOYS 4, CASS 2 The Phoenix scored first on a penalty kick approximately 10 minutes into the game and took a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Colonels cut the Sonoraville lead in half with six minutes remaining in the half, but the Phoenix went back up 3-1 before the break. Sonoraville scored again to go ahead 4-1 and Cass responded quickly to again cut the Phoenix lead in half at 4-2 in the first five minutes of the second half, but that is as close as it would get. Jonathan Tong and Luis Rojas scored the goals for the Colonels. Anthony Robledo assisted on the goal by Rojas. Sonoraville (2-0-1) added two more goals down the stretch to put the Colonels away, 6-2. Cass (0-3) plays at Southeast Whitfield Friday night at 7:30pm.

The Georgia Highlands baseball team snapped a four-game skid Tuesday night with a 9-4 win at LakePoint over visiting Bryant & Stratton College. John White went 3-for-3 with a homerun, three RBIs, scored three times and drew a walk to lead the Chargers at the plate. Nick Fink contributed a double. Devin Bilardello drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and had a hit to add to the GHC offense, while Grant Bodison and Evan Mask also added hits. The Chargers were busy on the base paths. Fink stole two bases. Mask, Bodison, and Bronco O’Brien each swiped a bag. Matthew Norton (4 IP, 1ER, 3H, 4BB, 1K) started on the mound and picked up the pitching win. Ryan Bramlett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K), Kyle Brady (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K), and David Hussey (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 0BB) also contributed on the bump for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (3-4) will host Bryant & Stratton again Wednesday at 6pm at LakePoint and entertains Lincoln Trail CC Friday and Saturday in a three-game series.
