The Cass wrestling team had eleven wrestlers entered in the GHSA Class AAAAA-B Sectional at Buford High School Saturday and all eleven placed in the top eight. Cartersville, competing Saturday at the Class AAAA state sectionals at Woodward Academy, qualified three wrestlers for the state traditional championship tournament next week at Macon Coliseum. The state tournament qualifers for the Canes include Robby Earick who placed fourth in the 132-pound weight class; Jonathan De La Cruz, fifth at 220-pounds; and Carlos Aborresco finished eighth in the 170-pound division. State tournament alternates for the Canes are Caz Smith in the 106-pound weight class and Rafael Lopez in the heavyweight division. “We are very proud of all our wrestlers and their efforts this weekend,” stated Cartersville wrestling coach Garvin Edwards.

The Canes basketball team topped Troup County Friday to earn a road, Region 5AAAA win. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 56, TROUP COUNTY 42 After a low-scoring first quarter tied at 6 each, Cartersville took a 20-17 lead at halftime and extended that lead to 43-34 through three quarters. Jaylon Pugh led the Canes in scoring with 18 points. Isaac Gridley contributed 12 points and T.J. Horton totaled 10. Jacorey Johns finished with seven points and Perignon Dyer scored three. Jay Jefferson led Troup with 18 points. The Tigers slipped to 9-15 overall and 4-8 in region play. The Canes (17-5, 8-3) will be the 3-seed at the Region 5AAAA tournament next week and will close out their regular season Saturday at home against region rival Central-Carrollton at 6:30pm. TRION BOYS 52, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 29 Jarrett Pierce led Trion with 11 points. Dylan Drew scored 11 for Excel. Trion led 17-4 after one quarter, 29-10 at halftime, and 39-19 after three quarters. Excel hosts Christian Heritage Saturday. COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 63, ADAIRSVILLE 42 The Colts led throughout on their way to a 21-point home victory. Coahulla Creek led at each quarter stop: 17-8, 35-20, and 47-32. Adairsville (13-11, 7-6) plays Murray County Tuesday at 5:30pm at the Region 6AAA tournament hosted by Calhoun. HIRAM BOYS 42, WOODLAND 27 Woodland boys basketball (1-22, 0-16) lost 42-27 at Hiram. Justice Hayes led Woodland with 11 points.

The Georgia Highlands softball Chargers (3-3) split with USC Salkehatchie Friday losing the first game 7-4 before salvaging a comeback 4-3 win in the bottom of the seventh of game two. Rebecca Meade (2-2) took the loss in the circle in game one after allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits, 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Micayla McCoy closed the game allowing no runs on two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Natalie Pederson (1-0) took the win in game two after the Chargers came back with the walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. Pederson closed 1.2 innings allowing zero runs on 2 hits, no walks, and three strikeouts. Offensively, Brianna Fickes led the Chargers going 3-for-6 with a single, double, homerun, and walk. The Chargers return to action Saturday to finish a four-game series with USC Salkehatchie with game times slated for 2pm and 4pm at Stars Field.

The Georgia Highlands baseball team opened the 2017 season Friday afternoon in style with a 12-0 shutout of visiting Chattanooga State CC at LakePoint in Emerson. Chargers’ new head coach, Dash O’Neill (photo left), picked up his first victory as the GHC skipper. Georgia Highlands posted nine runs in the first three innings and cruised to a seven inning win. Colby Taylor needed only 67 pitches to scatter three hits and a pair of walks to earn the pitching victory. He struck out one. Matthew Norton pitched the seventh inning for Georgia Highlands and struck out one. Isreal Zackery had three hits and scored three runs with one RBI at the plate for the Chargers. Brandon Bell hit a grand slam and drove in another run with a single. Grant Bodison also homered with two RBI and scored three runs. The Chargers also took advantage of five Chattanooga State errors. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch set for 2pm.

The Cartersville Lady Canes and the Woodland Lady Cats both picked up key region wins Friday night. The Excel Christian Academy and Adairsville girls came up short. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 58, TROUP COUNTY 51 The Cartersville girls basketball team trailed early — including 19-11 after one quarter — but rallied to win Friday night at Troup County, 58-51, in a Region 5AAAA battle. Cartersville outscored the Lady Tigers 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 26-25 lead at halftime, but they trailed 41-38 after three periods. Monica Matuba and Madison McKinney combined for 15 of the Lady Canes’ 20 fourth quarter points as Cartersville came-from-behind for a region win. McKinney finished with 15 and Motuba scored 14 to lead Cartersville. Camilla Rodriquez followed with 12 points. Amya Davis contributed nine; DeAsia Jefferson and Addie Smith added two points each; while Kimora McClinic and India Reid chipped in one point apiece. Troup County (14-10 overall, 7-5 Region 5AAAA) got 17 points from Jedda Madden and 14 from Kiva Spence. The Lady Canes (9-15, 3-9) host Central-Carrollton Saturday at 5pm as those two teams wrap up their region and regular season slates. A win by Cartersville would earn the 5-seed heading into the Region 5AAAA tournament. WOODLAND GIRLS 32, HIRAM 31 Lexie Robinson scored 12 points and Carli Clymer 10 as the Lady Cats won their third game and completed a season sweep of the Lady Hornets at Hiram Friday night. Hiram fell to 5-19 overall and 4-11 in Region 7AAAAA. Woodland heads to the region tournament with a 3-20 overall slate and finished 3-13 in the Region 7AAAAA regular season. TRION GIRLS 55, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 49 Brighton McCollum scored 23 points, but the Lady Eagles lost at Trion 55-49. Trion improved to 6-18 overall and 5-9 in Region 6A. Excel (10-9, 6-7) hosts Christian Heritage Saturday at 3:30pm. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 72, COAHULLA CREEK 55 The Adairsville girls defeated Coahulla Creek Friday 72-55 in Chatsworth. The Lady Tigers led at each quarter stop: 13-12, 29-27, and 51-42. Nakiyah Washington led all scorers with 23 points. Emily Collum and Havyn Isaac followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The basketball teams from Cartersville and Cass were both swept in region games Thursday at home. The Cartersville girls and boys lost to visiting LaGrange. Cass was swept by a pair or top-ten ranked Carrollton teams. No. 5 LaGRANGE BOYS 64, No.6 CARTERSVILLE 47 LaGrange held leads of 14-11 after one quarter; 34-23 at halftime; and 52-34 after three quarters on their way to a 17-point Region 5AAAA victory Thursday evening at the Storm Center. Trase Fezzia and Jaylon Pugh each scored 11 to lead the Canes. LaPerion Perry led the Grangers with 25 points. LaGrange improved to 22-3 overall and 11-1 in region games. The loss drops the Canes into the No. 3 seed at the Region 5AAAA tournament Wednesday at LaGrange. Cartersville will face either Cedartown, Chapel Hill, or Central-Carrollton. LaGRANGE GIRLS 42, CARTERSVILLE 32 LaGrange improved to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in Region 5AAAA by downing the Lady Canes by 10 points Thursday at the Storm Center. No. 4 CARROLLTON GIRLS 68, CASS 37 The visiting Lady Trojans led 18-10 after one quarter, 32-18 at halftime, and 49-28 after three quarters Thursday at Cass. Sharia Wade led Cass in scoring with 10 points. 4th-ranked Carrollton improved to 23-1 overall and remained an unbeaten 15-0 in region play. The Lady Trojans host East Paulding Saturday in a regular season finale, but will be the top-seed at the Region 7AAAAA tournament. The Lady Colonels have a pair of regular season wins over Hiram in 2016-17. Cass (18-6, 11-5) will be the No. 3 seed at the Region 7AAAAA Tournament at Villa Rica Tuesday and will play Hiram. No. 9 CARROLLTON BOYS 66, CASS 62 Cass held a five point lead in the second quarter, but Carrollton led 27-20 at halftime and 42-39 after three quarters Thursday night at Cass on their way to an important Region 7AAAAA victory. The visiting Trojans pushed their lead to as many as eight points early in the fourth quarter and held off the Colonels down the stretch for a 66-62 win. Cass won at Carrollton Tuesday night, so the two teams split their home-and-home series this week. Ashton Burley led Cass in scoring with 21 points. Ian Whittington scored 15 points. Mark Chester, Jacquez Milles, and Jake Collum added seven points each. Carrollton improved to 16-8 overall and 12-3 in region games. The Trojans have a home region game remaining Friday night against East Paulding. Cass (18-7, 12-4) will next play in the Region 7AAAAA tournament Tuesday at Carrollton. Cass will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will face Paulding County. The Colonels and Patriots split their two regular season games.

The Woodland girls basketball team won for the second time this season Tuesday night by edging East Paulding in overtime. Meanwhile, the Adairsville and Cass boys teams knocked off teams ahead of them in their respective region standings. Results for all the Tuesday action listed below. WOODLAND GIRLS 46, EAST PAULDING 44 — Overtime Lexie Robinson had a game-high 12 point performance, while Carli Clymer and Jamison Kilgo contributed 11 points each as the Lady Cats won for the second time this season in a Region 7AAAAA home game. Woodland trailed 14-7 at halftime, but had narrowed the Raiders’ lead to 24-22 going to the fourth quarter. Woodland (2-20, 2-13) travels to Hiram Friday. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 52, SONORAVILLE 46 Ronald Hardin scored 20 points to lead the Tigers to a six-point upset of the visiting Phoenix Tuesday night.
