The Cartersville and Adairsville boys basketball teams picked up wins Monday night with the Canes taking their season opener and the Tigers bouncing back to even their season mark. At Cass, the Lady Colonels and Colonels lost games to visiting Class AAAAAA South Paulding. No. 10 CARTERSVILLE BOYS 72, NORTH PAULDING 64 The Cartersville boys basketball team opened its 2016-17 season with a 72-64 win over North Paulding Monday at the Dalton Tournament. Jaylon Pugh led the Canes with 31 points. Perignon Dyer scored 13 and Isaac Gridley 9 for Cartersville. Daunta Bryan collected three steals and Luke Schiltz gathered five offensive rebounds. Canes’ coach, Mike Tobin, was pleased with the effort his team gave in the opener and expects up to 30 football players to tryout for the team once the football playoffs conclude. Cartersville (1-0) plays again in the Dalton tournament Tuesday night against Northwest Whitfield. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 67, GORDON CENTRAL 32 The Tigers routed Gordon Central Monday with a balanced scoring attack and a defense that allowed only two points in the first quarter and three in the third period. Grayson Dailey and Hunter Hice of Adairsville scored eight each to lead all scorers in the game. Ethan Belcher and Cole Hewitt totaled seven each. Denzel Pitt, Trevis Williams, and Savaun Henderson finished with six apiece for the Tigers. Lolyn Nix scored seven and Dawson Lackey six for the Warriors Adairsville (1-1) plays at Excel Christian Academy Tuesday night. No. 3 SOUTH PAULDING BOYS 53, CASS 38 The Colonels lost to Class AAAAAA 3rd-ranked South Paulding, 53-38. The Spartans scored the first ten points of the game and led 16-10 at the end of the first period on their way to a 29-20 advantage at halftime. Drew Shepherd had a game-high 17 points to lead South Paulding. Ja’cori Wilson and Kane Williams scored 12 and 11, respectively, for the Spartans. C.J. Bennett scored 11 points for the Colonels. Ashton Burley added ten points and Ian Whittington finished with nine. Cass (1-1) plays on the road Saturday against Notre Dame of Chattanooga. SOUTH PAULDING GIRLS 64, CASS 49 The Lady Colonels took an early 15-12 lead on visiting South Paulding Monday afternoon, but the Lady Spartans outscored Cass 20-12 in the second period to take a 32-27 halftime lead they would not relinquish. Kelsi Fizer led South Paulding with a game-high 24 points. The Lady Colonels struggled from the free throw line, making only nine of 20 attempts, but still managed to narrow the South Paulding lead to eight with three minutes to go in the game before falling by 15. Jana Morning led the Lady Colonels with 14 points. Sharia Wade followed with eight points and Kyla Michienzi scored seven. Payton Stoddard totaled six points. Lyric Curtis and Kyler Trouten scored five points each, while Esmeralda Thomas and Chanel Clemmons added three apiece. Cass (1-1) will play North Murray Saturday at the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic.

Several 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' had outstanding performances this past week at the collegiate and professional levels. In college football, former Cartersville Hurricane Hayes Linn had a six tackle game for Air Force in a Mountain West Conference win over San Jose State. Another former Hurricane, Trevor Carlton, had a pair of tackles as Reinhardt opened the NAIA national playoffs with a win. On the running front, Kingston resident and cross country standout at Rhodes College, Spencer Fields, led his team at the NCAA Division III National Championships. In swimming, former Hurricane Elise Hart won two events and helped lead her Air Force team at the Northwestern University Invitational. On the hardwood, former Excel Christian Academy standout Rudy Winters has averaged more than 18 points per game in Columbus State University's three wins to start the season. MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (TE, Fr., Cartersville HS). . . saw action, but did not have a reception in the Crimson Tide’s 31-3 defeat of visiting Chattanooga Saturday night. Forristall has five catches on the season for 73 yards. Alabama (11-0) has already clinched the SEC West and will close out the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against arch-rival Auburn. GORDON GRAY — Kennesaw State University (WR, R-Soph., Cartersville HS). . . saw action in the Owls’ 28-7 loss Saturday at Charleston Southern. Gray received playing time in six games this season. The win by the Buccaneers clinched the 2016 Big South Conference title. KSU finished its season 8-3 and was 14-8 in the program’s first two years of existence. VOLLEYBALL KATIE O’CONNOR — Western Carolina University (Jr., MB, Cartersville HS). . . led her team with 13 kills and seven blocks, but the Catamounts were eliminated from the Southern Conference tournament in Birmingham, AL Saturday in a five set, quarterfinal match by UNC-Greensboro. WCU finished the season with an 11-19 mark. O’Connor finished the season with 200 kills, 22 digs, and a team-leading 119 blocks. SWIMMING ELISE HART — Air Force Academy (Jr., Cartersville HS). . . competing at the Northwestern TYR Invitational in Evanston, IL, Hart and her 200 medley relay team of Emma Strom, Shayle Finnesand, and Lydia Knutson won Saturday. Hart also won the 100 fly with an NCAA “B” cut of 54.46 and placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (56.80). The day before, Hart teamed with Knutson, Brianna Mount, and Jinan Andrews to place fourth in the 200 free relay (1:33.88) and joined Strom, Finnesand, and Genevieve Miller for third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:45.80. Adairsville and Woodland split their basketball doubleheader Saturday evening at Adairsville High School with the Lady Tigers winning 65-38 and the Wildcats winning the boys’ game, 52-49. Josie Summerville led the Adairsville girls to their season-opening win with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and nine steals. Adairsville took an 11-point lead in the opening period and expanded their halftime lead to 31-19. The Lady Tigers led 49-26 after three quarters. “I am so proud of our girls tonight on a goodwin against a scrappy, well-coached Woodland team,” said Adairsville head coach Lee Whitaker. “Emily (Collum) was so tenacious defensively and got our team out on the break. Josie (Summerville) controlled the paint and ran the floor, and Zay Harris did a great job in transition finding her teammates.” Nakiyah Washington scored 12 points and collecgted seven rebounds for Adairsville. Collum made 11 steals and scored eight points. The Woodland boys rallied in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 52-49 win Saturday at Adairsville. The Wildcats led 14-4 after one period, but Adairsville cut the lead to 26-24 at the intermission. The Tigers took a 43-36 lead into the fourth period, but Woodland outscored Adairsville 16-6 in the final quarter for a three-point win. Woodland’s Trevor Knowles scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. He converted a pair of key free throws and nailed a three-point field goal late in the game. Justice Carter and Justice Hayes led Woodland with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Camden Royal scored eight. Jaylen Ballard added four points and Hunter Johnson chipped in with two. Hunter Hice and Ronald Hardin led Adairsville with 10 points each. Adairsville plays at Excel Christian Academy Tuesday with the girls’ game beginning at 6pm. Woodland hosts Cedartown November 29.

The Woodland high school wrestling team won the Blackbeard Duals at Allatoona High School Saturday with a 48-15 victory over region and county rival Cass in the finals. Woodland had wins over Pepperell, Union Grove, Allatoona, and Gilmer on their journey to the championship match. Cass had wins over Northgate (57-12), South Paulding (48-25), Luella (40-21), and North Forsyth (40-37) to reach the finals. Cass and Woodland will both wrestle next at the Etowah Eagles' Duals on Tuesday.

The Cass student section, who like the moniker -- Colonels Crazies -- had some fun and added to the atmosphere Friday night at the Cass gymnasium as the Colonels and Lady Colonels opened their 2016-17 basketball campaigns by defeating Armuchee. COLONELS SURGE PAST ARMUCHEE IN SECOND HALF The Cass High School boys basketball team started the 2016-17 regular season Friday night with a solid 57-33 win over visiting Armuchee. The win completed an opening night sweep. The Lady Colonels won earlier in the evening, 43-38. (Please see separate story on this site.) Mark Chester led all scorers in the game with 14 points that included three, three-pointers. C.J. Bennett had nine points for the Colonels and a pair of threes. Cass took a 19-12 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 33-21 at halftime. The Colonels then limited the visiting Indians to only one field goal in the third quarter and only 12 points in the second half to pull away with a 24-point, non-region victory. Ian Whittington added eight points for the Colonels. Tryston Coffman scored seven. Steven Spell chipped in with six points. Ashton Burley added five points — all on free throws. Jacquez Mills contributed four points, while Terrance Foster and Carter Hedden added two apiece for Cass. Seth Stanley led Armuchee (1-1) with 11 points and Drew Cummings had 10. Tamalachi Lovelace scored five points, followed by Kamen Harris and Eli Brock with 4 and 3 points, respectively. Cass (1-0) will host South Paulding Monday at 5:30pm and will play Chattanooga’s Notre Dame next Saturday at 4pm in the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic. EAST PAULDING 100, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 27 It is a rebuilding year for the Excel Christian Eagles and coach Eric Collins, but the first-year head coach was upbeat following a one-sided loss at East Paulding Friday night. “We played with great effort despite the score,” said Collins. “We missed a lot of free throws and turned the ball over too much, but we will learn from this and continue our journey of growth and development. We’ll keep working to build the Excel program brand.” Jordan Wilkie scored 11 points and Chase Horn five to lead the Eagles in their season opener. Azer Tidor scored 19 and Caleb Ivey 15 to lead the Raiders. East Paulding posted 37 points in the first quarter on their way to a 60-20 lead at halftime, then limited the inexperienced Eagles to only seven points in the second half. The Raiders (1-0) turn their attention to the Dalton Thanksgiving Tournament that begins Monday when they will play Northwest Whitfield at 7pm. Excel Christian (0-1) will host Adairsville Tuesday at 7:30pm.

MORNING'S 15 LEADS LADY COLONELS The Cass Lady Colonels opened their 2016-17 basketball campaign Friday night at home with a 43-38 victory over pre-season, 10th-ranked Armuchee. Jana Morning led the Lady Colonels with 15 points and Payton Stoddard added nine. Cass went ahead 15-10 after one quarter and 25-17 at the break, but the visiting Lady Indians (1-1) outscored the Lady Colonels 12-4 in the third quarter to tie the game at 29 each. Cass responded in the final frame, outscoring Armuchee 14-9 for the five point, season-opening win. Livia Skinner led all Armuchee scorers with 15 points. Morgan Copeland added nine for the Lady Indians. Cass (1-0) will host South Paulding Monday afternoon at 4pm and plays North Murray in the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic next Saturday at 1pm. LADY EAGLES EDGE EAST PAULDING The Excel Christian Academy Lady Eagles outlasted a furious fourth quarter comeback and 30 turnovers they committed to earn a season-opening win at East Paulding, 47-46. A tight game throughout, Excel led 22-19 at halftime after each team finished with 11 points in the first quarter. ECA took a six point lead after three quarters at 32-26 and held on in the final stanza for a one point, road win. Rylie Boston led the Lady Eagles’ in scoring with 16 points. Whitney Harris and Brighton McCollum added 10 each. Kalli Beth Scheff scored 9 points with Landry McCollum and Bailey Cox contributed one point apiece. Dajuan Browder and Kayla Sanford led East Paulding (0-1) with nine points each. Excel hosts Adairsville Tuesday at 6pm.

The top-ranked and defending state champion Cartersville Purple Hurricanes took another step toward a championship repeat Friday night at Weinman Stadium with a 35-7 defeat of Burke County in the second round of the 2016 Class AAAA state playoffs. Cartersville now has 27 consecutive wins. The Canes started fast once again, posting five first half touchdowns to take a 35-0 lead to the intermission. Junior quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, hooked up for touchdown passes to Avery Showell twice (13 and 26 yard TDs), while connecting with Trey Creamer (11 yard TD) and E.J. Turner (18 yard TD) once each for the other scoring strikes. Antoine Jefferson added a first half rushing touchdown on a 10 yard reverse play. Burke County drove 64 yards late in the third quarter for their only score. It was a drive aided by a pair of Cartersville penalties that took 15 plays narrowing the final margin to 35-7 with 1:11 left in the period. Cartersville outgained the visiting Bears with 409 yards of total offense compared to Burke County’s 170 yards. The Canes also had 19 first downs to 12 by the Bears. Lawrence finished the evening 19 of 31 for 316 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. He also added six rushes for 57 yards. His top targets were Showell (9 receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns), Creamer (3 receptions for 79 yards, Fezzia (2 catches for 53 yards, TD), and Turner (3 receptions for 27 yards and a TD). Creamer had just three carries for 33 rushing yards. Nyvin Nelson recorded 12 tackles; Brandon Wade and Sean Holton had 8 tackles each. Torrian Scrutchins had three tackles and one sack. Fezzia made five stops and broke up a pass. Darrien Poellnitz made six tackles. Showell added five tackles. Trevor Lowe garnered three tackles and broke up a pass. Burke County’s season ends with a 9-3 mark. They were runner-up to Thomson in Region 3AAAA. Cartersville (12-0) will now go on the road for the Class AAAA state quarterfinals. The Canes travel to Woodward Academy next Friday night (Nov. 25) to play the 11-1 War Eagles in College Park. It will be the first-ever meeting of the two schools in football. Woodward Academy — the Region 4AAAA champs — routed Northwest Whitfield Friday night, 49-8, and have now won 10 in a row since a late August loss at Grady, 14-10. The War Eagles have not allowed two touchdowns in a game since that loss and have shutout five of their last ten opponents. Woodward scored three first quarter touchdowns to take a big lead early at home. The War Eagles accumulated over 500 yards of total offense. Woodward quarterback Ryan Glover was 15-of-21 for 257 yards and four touchdowns. He also added a four yard rushing touchdown. Tahj Gary led the War Eagles’ ground game with 104 yards on 11 carries and two short touchdown runs. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department 10-and-under all star football team defeated Dalton Tuesday night at James Brown Park in Dalton, 30-8, to improve to 2-0 in Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 5 action. With the victory, Bartow secured a berth in the GRPA Class A State Tournament that will begin December 3 in Calhoun. Bartow defeated Cartersville 32-8 last Saturday to open District 5 play. Dalton scored on a safety in the first quarter and added a 15-yard touchdown run in the second period to go ahead 8-0 Tuesday night, but Bartow tied the game before halftime on a 40-yard run by Devin Henderson and a Kendrick Price two-point conversion. The second half was dominated by Bartow. Adrian Harris, Jr. scored on a 48-yard run in the third quarter and Price added the two-point PAT that put Bartow ahead 16-8. Henderson then added a 15-yard scoring run, followed by another Price PAT to give Bartow a 24-8 lead. Jamarion Pullum sealed the victory by picking off a Dalton pass that he returned 50 yards for a touchdown and a 30-8 Bartow decision. Ethan Brown and Richard Houston led the Bartow defense with five tackles each. Bartow returns to action Thursday night at Hamilton Crossing Park and will face the Rome all-stars at 7:15pm. Rome is 2-0 in District 5 play with win over Dalton (22-8) and Cartersville (30-14). Cartersville (0-2) will host Dalton (0-2) Thursday night at Dellinger Park at 7:15am. The winner of the Bartow/Rome game Thursday night will advance to the GRPA District 5 championship game Saturday at noon against Calhoun at Calhoun High School. In other GRPA action Tuesday, the 8-and-under Bartow all-stars were shutout by Dalton, 19-0. The Bartow offense was led by Malachi Harris and Joshua Love. He has started the basketball season as the most improved player from last season for the Tigers. His coaching staff notes the hard work he put in during the off season and his contributions so far this season. They credit his hustle and ball awareness on the floor. The son of Courtney and Angie Hice, he maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Brooke Lambert is the Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Week. A cheerleader on the football and competition cheer teams, Lambert is a leader both on and off the mats for her teams. Her coaches point to her infectious joy and enthusiasm as an inspiration to her teammates. Lambert is known for her day-in and day-out commitment to her team and her ability to push others to be the best they can be. She was an essential part of the Cass team that qualified for the Class AAAAA state meet. Lambert is a senior and the daughter of Tonya and Philip Smith. Trevor Lawrence is the Elite Athlete of the Week representing Cartersville High School. Lawrence passed for 258 yards and seven touchdowns in the first half of the Canes’ opening round 77-14 playoff victory last week over Chestatee. He now has 2,922 yards and 40 TDs for the season and has helped lead Cartersville to 26 consecutive wins. The Canes posted 56 points in only 24 first half plays in the blowout win. They will play Burke County Friday night at Weinman Stadium in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs. The son of Jeremy and Amanda Lawrence, the Canes’ junior quarterback is the national consensus No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2018. Lindsey Mauldin is the Elite Athlete of the Week from Excel Christian Academy. The daughter of Missy and Derick Mauldin, Lindsey is a senior and has attended Excel since kindergarten. Mauldin is a four year starter for the softball team where she contributed by playing first base, outfield, and catcher. She is also a four year starter at forward for the Lady Eagles’ basketball team and a member of the Excel golf team. She has served as a captain on the softball and basketball teams for the past two years. “Lindsey has been a vital part of the growth and development of the Excel basketball program,” said her basketball coach Eric Harris. “She has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a positive work ethic.” Mauldin ranks fourth in her graduating class and assumes many leadership roles at Excel. She is a positive influence and role model for others at the school. She currently holds the posts of Senior Class President, vice president of the Spanish Honor Society, and secretary for the Beta Club. She is an active participant in the Hand of Christ Ministry that tutors elementary student on a weekly basis at Cartersville First Presbyterian Church. Mauldin also gives back to the community as a participant in Splash Bartow for the last three years and sheis a member of Cartersville First Baptist Church. She has been accepted to attend Samford University in Birmingham and Kennesaw State University. Her ultimate goal is to graduate from college and attend law school. CROSS COUNTRY SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Soph., Darlington, Kingston resident). . . ran 7th overall in a time of 25:40.72 at the 8K NCAA Division-III South/Southeast Region Cross Country Championships at Berry College Saturday, leading Rhodes to a fourth place team finish. Fields won the Southern Athletic Association title earlier this season and will now advance as an individual to the NCAA D-III National Championship race Saturday, November 19 at E.P. “Tom”Sawyer State Park in Louisville, KY. Although the Lynx did not qualify for nationals at their regional, Rhodes was extended an at-large bid by the NCAA on Sunday, meaning the remainder of Fields’ team will also compete in Louisville. She then had 12 kills and six blocks in a four set loss to Mercer last Friday, and totaled three kills and three blocks in a three set win over The Citadel on Saturday. WCU (11-18, 6-10) will be the No. 7 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament that begins Saturday. NFL VIC BEASLEY JR. — Atlanta Falcons (2nd yr. pro; Clemson University; Adairsville HS). . . Although the Falcons lost 24-15 at Philadelphia Sunday, Beasley had another standout performance. He finished with four tackles (three solo), two sacks, and a forced fumble. Beasley is currently tied for third in the NFL with 9.5 sacks through ten games. He is tied for the league lead in forced fumbles. He has 30 tackles on the year also. The middle school aged volleyball team for the Bartow County Recreation Department finished second in the Georgia youth 14-and-under tournament November 11-12 in Bremen. The Georgia Parks and Recreation State Tournament was hosted by the City of Bremen Parks and Recreation Department. The Bartow team — coached by Nicole Orton and Heather Davis — lost its opening match to host Bremen, but rallied for four consecutive wins before falling to Carrollton in the state championship match. The Bartow team roster includes: Rylee Hensley, Avery Morlot, Taylor Moore, Macey Vaughn, Sidney Molinaro, Hailie Owens, Allayah Davis, Meredith Orton, Madelyn Orton, and Delaney Tuplin. Bartow County had state tournament wins over Heard County, Dalton, Carroll County, and Bremen to work its way back to the finals in the double-elimination tournament bracket.
