  • Wildcats 5th of 20 teams at Woodstock Invitational

    The Woodland boys and girls track teams competed in the Wolverine Invitational at Woodstock High School Saturday. The boys placed 5th out of 20 teams and the girls finished 13th. First place finishers for the boys were: Jamai Smith in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds and Thomas Jolly in the Pole Vault with a vault of 12 feet even. Also scoring in the meet: Shamus Thomas in the 100 meter dash, Jamai Smith in the 200 meter dash, Trever Knowles in the high jump, the 4 by 100m relay, 4 by 400m relay, and the 4 by 800m relay. Top finishers and scoring for the girls team were: Karson Norris in the high jump, Cheyenne Spinks, and Lindsay Scifers in the 3200 meter run, Skylar Chappell in the discus throw, Chaila Reliford in the long jump, Avery Mayweather in the shot put, and the 4 by 800 meter relay.

  • Canes play in national event this week at LakePoint

    The Cartersville Hurricanes baseball team opens play in the annual Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson Thursday against the Montverde Academy (FL) Eagles at 3:35pm on Field 15. Some of the top high school baseball programs in the nation will participate in the event that runs through Saturday at LakePoint. Parkview (GA) is the defending champion and the Panthers are back to defend their 2015 title. Title top contenders include: 3rd-ranked Oxford (Miss) HS (5-1), 7th-ranked Buford (Ga.) HS (3-1), 20th-ranked Gulliver Prep (Miami, Fla.) HS (8-2) and the Canes who are ranked No. 26. Other top programs in the tournament include: Ballard HS (Louisville, KY); Hillgrove HS (Powder Springs, GA); Houston Co. HS (Warner Robins, GA); IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL); Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, MS); McEachern HS (Powder Springs, GA); Montverde Academy (Montverde, FL); Mountain View HS (Lawrenceville, GA); and Sparkman HS (Harvest, AL).   • Tigers win at LFO in PK shootout.

    The Adairsville boys soccer team won in dramatic style Tuesday night, defeating Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on the road in a penalty kicks shootout. The game was a scoreless draw through regulation time and two five minute overtimes, sending the region contest to a penalty kicks tie-breaker. Danny Carillo, Jesus Garcia, and Salvador Grimaldo Jr., all converted on their PK shootout attempts for the Tigers to escape with a 3-2 win. "B.J. Hardman had a tremendous game in goal," said Adairsville coach Kelly Abernathy. Hardman made eight saves in regulation and overtime, plus three dramatic saves in the shootout. "The core of the defense had an outstanding game as well," noted Abernathy. "Gideon Perez, Austin Barry, Ari Longmore, and Joseph Pacheco played most of the game, but we had several subs that solidified the defense throughout the night." Adairsville (6-1 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) took 20 shots on goal in regulation and overtime. "The offense deserves credit too," added Abernathy. "We were productive, offensively, and controlled play and possession for most of the game." The Tigers entertain Coahulla Creek Thursday night (March 10).

  • Davis comes up big for Lady Canes; Collum's hat trick leads Adairsville

    Emily Collum scored a hat trick to lead the undefeated Adairsville Lady Tigers to victory and Cartersville's Chloe Davis scored one goal in regulation and converted on a PK kick after regulation as both local girls' soccer teams won important region games Tuesday night. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, LFO 0 The Adairsville Lady Tigers shutout Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 6-0 on the road Tuesday night behind three goals by Emily Collum. Collum put Adairsville ahead 3-0 at halftime with goals in the 10th minute (assist from Kaitlyn Webster), 21st minute (assist by Aimee Pacheco), and 28th minute (assist from Hannah Worley). In the second half, Mac Stehenson scored in the 44th minute off a corner kick from Katie Lawhorn to make the score 4-0. Pacheco scored in the 58th minute for a 5-0 lead and Haley Pittman scored a goal in the 62nd minute for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (7-0 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) hosts Coahulla Creek on Thursday at 5:30pm. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 The Lady Canes went to overtime and penalty kicks Tuesday night before an outcome was reached, but Cartersville escaped with an important 2-1 Region 7-AAAA victory. Chloe Davis scored the Lady Canes’ goal in regulation off an assist from Marissa Mowry in the game’s 50th minute, but Southeast tied it with a goal in the waining minutes of regulation. With PKs knotted at 2-2, Davis converted to give the Lady Canes a 3-2 advantage on PKs and Cartersville keeper Abby Robinson stopped a pair of attempts to secure the region win. Cartersville (5-1 overall, 2-0 in 7-AAAA) hosts Pickens Friday (March 11) at 5:30pm.

  • Chargers split twin bill Tuesday

    Georgia Highlands College split a doubleheader with Wallace State-Hanceville CC Tuesday at LakePoint Park in Emerson winning the nightcap 6-3, but falling in the opener, 4-2. Zach McCrum drove home Brandon Etheridge and Trenton Nutter with a two-run double in the sixth inning to lift the Chargers to the second game victory. Nick Constan picked up the pitching win for GHC in 4 and 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked five, and surrendered four hits. The Chargers carried a 3-1 lead to the sixth, but WSHCC tied the game with a pair of runs. Following McCrum’s go-ahead double, Devin Bilardello reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Drew Davis for an insurance run and a 6-3 advantage. Will Griffin picked up a save by recording the final five outs. He yielded no hits or runs on two walks and struck out a pair. In Game 1, the Chargers led 2-1 through five innings only to lose 4-2. Andrew Plunkett put Wallace State-Hanceville ahead in the sixth with a two-run double. The visitors added another run in the frame, then held off Georgia Highlands for the win. The Chargers managed only three hits. One each by McCrum, Daniel Gooden, and Jonathan White. Gooden and White had one RBI each. Zack Moon pitched 3 and 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win on the mound. He allowed no runs or hits, struck out three, and walked one. McCrum (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (14-10) plays Central Alabama CC Friday and Triton CC (IL) Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson.

  • Cass bats silenced in loss to Griffin

    A pair of Griffin pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter Tuesday night as the Bears defeated the Cass Colonels at LakePoint Park in Emerson, 11-1. Kyle Turner (4 IP, 0H, 0R, 4K, 2BB) and Terry Fuller (2 IP, 1R, 2K, 2BB) kept the Cass hitters off stride, walked four, and struck out six for victory. Griffin took a 5-0 lead through two innings, added two more in the fifth, and four in the sixth on eight hits. Although the Colonels were held hitless, two walks, an infield error, and a passed ball led to a Cass run in the bottom of the fifth. Cody Johnson (2 IP, 5H, 5ER, 2BB) started on the mound for the Colonels and took the pitching loss. Austin Pruett (3 IP, 1H, 2ER, 3K, 1BB), Steven Spell (0.1 IP, 2H, 3ER, 2BB), and Jordan Reed (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) also pitched in the loss. Griffin improved to 7-1 with the non-region win. Cass (3-3) plays North Oconee Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm.

  • Mustangs score late to top Adairsville

    Kennesaw Mountain scored five runs over their final two innings to defeat the Adairsville Tigers in come-from-behind fashion Tuesday night at LakePoint in Emerson. The Tigers scored a single run in the fourth, but the Mustangs got four in the fifth and added another run in the sixth for the 5-1 non-region win. Kennesaw Mountain starting pitcher, Matt Cole, went the distance for the win. He scattered three Tigers’ hits in seven innings of work, struck out 10, and walked two. Landon Howren and Lane Griffith singled for Adairsville. Hayden Morrow doubled. The Tigers used four pitchers in the contest. Kyler Pelfrey (2 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB) and Sam Seaman (2 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB) both worked a pair of shutout innings. Noah O’Kelley (1 IP, 4ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss. Orry Carter (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1K) also pitched for Adairsville. Ivan Johnson (RBI) and Patrick Martin (HR, RBI) had two hits each to lead the Mustangs. Will Corey and Justin Phillips also drove in runs for Kennesaw Mountain. Adairsville opens Region 6-AAA play at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday at 5:55pm.

  • Cass tennis teams edged by River Ridge

    The Cass tennis teams were both edged 3-2 by visiting 7-AAAAA-A sub-region opponent, River Ridge, Tuesday at Hamilton Crossing Park. In the girls’ match, Cass took both the No. 1 singles and doubles lines. Ryleigh Lanham won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and the Lady Colonels’ duo of Emma Wickenheiser/Kaira Bowen won at the No. 1 doubles line, 6-0, 6-2. In the boys’ match, Dalton Jackson and Eric Dunlap won singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 lines. Jackson won in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Dunlap won 7-5, 6-0. Cass travels to Rome Thursday (March 10) and will play in the Woodland Invitational Friday and Saturday (March 11-12).

  • CPRD to offer Open League basketball beginning in April

    The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is offering an Open League for basketball this Spring. The games will be played at the Aubrey Street Gym Tuesday and Wednesdays after 7pm.     In this 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' update, we update results from local athletes contributing at the college level in basketball, track and field, wrestling, and tennis. The 2015-16 basketball season is now over for most of the local collegiate players, although a few continue in tournament play. Track and Field results are limited, since most programs are transitioning over the past week and next week from their indoor seasons to the outdoor season. NOTE: The updates for local softball and baseball athletes for the Week ending March 6 appeared in an article published March 7. WRESTLING SAMMY ROSARIO — Cumberland University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . lost both matches at the NAIA National Championships in Topeka, KS wrestling in the 133 pound division. The Cumberland team finished 19th at the national tournament. Rosario (16-9) was one of seven national qualifiers on his team that tied for the Mid-South Conference Championship, a first ever for the school. TRACK AND FIELD ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran 16th of 35 competitors (16:52.36) in the 5,000 meter run at the Victor Ice Breaker Duals at Berry College March 5. Reinhardt finished second as a team in the event behind Shorter University. The Eagles compete next at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, March 18-19. TROY HICKOM — Clayton State (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran second of thirteen competitors (16:19.51) in the 5,000 meters at the Tiger Orange and Blue Classic hosted by Savannah State University March 5. Next for the Lakers is the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, March 18-19. TENNIS PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . lost her singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, playing at the No. 1 line as the Lady Cardinals defeated University of Cincinnati, 4-3. She and No. 3 line doubles partner, Audrey Berger, also fell, 6-3. Ball State is 8-2 in matches this season and travels to Orlando March 8-18 for matches with South Dakota, Norfolk State, James Madison, and Wright State. SOMALIA LEWIS — Emmanuel College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . member of the Lady Lions tennis program that is 3-10 overall and 1-4 in Conference Carolinas matches. (Note: Individual results are not published by the Emmanuel tennis program.) Next for Emmanuel is a match at University of North Georgia against Illinois-Springfield March 17, at Belmont Abbey March 19, and at N.C. Central March 20. BASKETBALL SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . played in 24 games for the Barons in 2015-16, starting nine games. She averaged four points per game in just over nine minutes per game. She collected 1.5 rebounds per game, made 17 steals, and had 12 assists. BPC was 7-21 overall and finished 3-15 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. MARISSA DUBOSE — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . played in 27 games for the Cardinal averaging 1.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and just under one assist per game. She also had nine blocks and seven steals for the season. Gadsden State had a 13-15 overall record and was 5-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference. ASHLEY HUSKINS — University of the Cumberlands (Fr., Cass HS) . . . played in 24 games, starting twice. She averaged 4.5 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and just under one assist per game. Huskins blocked eight shots and made 11 steals. The Lady Patriots’s season ended with a 61-50 Mid-South Conference quarterfinal tournament loss to 6th-ranked Campbellsville University March 3 in Frankfort, KY. U of C was 11-16 overall this season and 2-12 in the Mid-South Conference. KAELYN IRBY — Gadsden State CC (Soph. Cartersville HS) . . . averaged 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 27 games. She totaled 62 steals and five blocks on the season. The Cardinal finished 13-15 overall and third in the Alabama Community College Conference North Division with a 5-5 record. STEPHANIE KUHRT — Reinhardt University (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . saw action in four games for the Eagles. She scored 2.3 points per game, and just under one assist and steal per game played. RU lost in the opening round of the AAC tournament to Columbia (SC) College. The Lady Eaglers finished 13-19 overall and 9-11 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. MORGAN JONES — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . played in 26 games for GSCC, averaging 4.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game. She completed the season with 12 assists, five steals, and five blocked shots. Gadsden State was 13-15 overall and 5-5 in the ACCC North Division. MAYA JONES — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . was credited with 22 games played and averaged just under one point and rebound per game. She shot better than 45 percent from the floor and over 85 percent from the free throw line in limited minutes. Gadsden State was 13-15 overall and 5-5 in the ACCC North Division. RYAN DAVIS — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . scored 13.2 points per game on 50.9 percent shooting from the floor. He also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game for the Golden Eagles logging better than 30 minutes per game. Davis made 64 steals and blocked five shots during the season. CTCC lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. A.J. MOSBY — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . averaged 18.7 points per game, shot over 52 percent from the floor, collected 4.6 rebounds per game and dealt 3.9 assists in 31 games played. He was a first-team, all-league selection for the season. Mosby shot 39 percent from behind the three-point arc and 78 percent from the charity stripe. He also had 76 steals during the season. CTCC lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanual College (Jr., Excel Christian Academy) . . . scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds in a 95-66 home victory over Bob Jones University March 1. In 26 games played and 22 starts, Robinson is averaging 8.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. The Lions are 22-5 overall and were 16-4 in Conference Carolinas. The Lions, who were not eligible for the conference or NCAA post-season due to reclassification to NCAA D-II, will play in the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association tournament beginning March 11. Emmanual opens with Columbia International in the NCCAA South Regionals at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. ADRIAN RODGERS — Southern University (Sr., Cartersville, GA resident; Centennial HS; Maine Central Prep) . . . scored 25 points with nine rebounds, an assist, and two steals in an 84-79 win over Texas Southern March 3 . . . totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists in a 79-71 home loss to Prarie View A&M March 5. . . Rodgers has started all 31 games this season for the 19-12 Jaguars. He is averaging 17.6 points per game and 5.4 rebounds. He has 21 steals this season and has blocked three shots. The Jags are 11-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and play Alabama State in the conference tournament quarterfinals March 10 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. COREY TOBIN — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . scored eight points per game, grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game, and averaged three assists in 31 games played for the Golden Eagles. Tobin shot over 40 percent from behind the three-point line and was better than 76 percent from the free throw line. He also made 44 steals during the season. Chattahoochee Tech lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. RUDY WINTERS — Dalton State College (Soph., Excel Christian Academy) . . . scored four points, had two assists, two rebounds, and one steal in a conference tournament loss to Auburn-Montgomery March 3. Winters played in 19 games and averaged 12 points per game on 47 percent shooting. He averaged 2.8 rebounds and just under one assist and steal per game.   • Rome scores late to edge Woodland; Excel loses at Mount Paran

    ROME 2, WOODLAND 1 Woodland scored a first inning run on an RBI single by Cauy Wiliams and received solid pitching against Rome Monday night, but it was not enough to hold off the visiting Wolves. Rome tied the game in the sixth on three consecutive singles and scored a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a single and an error to edge the Wildcats, 2-1. Jacob Frye walked to open the bottom of the first for Woodland, moved to second on a Hunter Reaid sacrifice, and later scored on the Williams’ hit. Rome finished the night with 11 hits, but Wildcats’ starter Kolby Stansel kept the Wolves off the scoreboard through five innings. Stansel allowed one earned run on eight hits and one walk in 5 and 2/3 innings. He struck out six. Rodolpho Romo (1.1 IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss in relief. Adam Martin (double), Trent Harrison, Williams, and Frye had the only Woodland hits. Woodland (1-6, 0-4) continues the three-game sub-region series at Rome Wednesday and will host the third game with the Wolves on Friday at 6pm. MOUNT PARAN CHRISTIAN 16, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 1 Excel Christian failed to get a hit, but scored an unearned run Monday night in a run-rule shortened 16-1 loss at Mount Paran Christian. Mount Paran scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the second, and six more in the third to make short work of the Eagles. Austin Ross pitched the three inning, no-hitter for Mount Paran. He struck out four and walked two. ECA pitchers gave up nine hits, including three homeruns, and seven walks. Jordan Wilkie recorded a pair of strikeouts, but was charged with the loss. The Eagles committed three errors. Excel scored a run in the top of the third when Wyatt Karlovich walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Levi Blackwell, and scored when Trace Still reached on an error. Excel (1-5) plays again Monday, March 14 at Whitefield Academy and will host St. Francis on Tuesday, March 15.

SOFTBALL BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . catcher, has appeared in eight games for the Pirates and has two doubles while going 4-for-9 at the plate (.444) with a a run scored and four RBI. Ballard had three hits and two RBI March 5 at Fort Valley State in a 19-3 win. ASU is 16-6 on the season and opens Peach Belt Conference play March 12 by hosting a doubleheader with the defending NCAA D-II national champs, University of North Georgia. SYDNEY FLOWERS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . the Eagles’ third baseman went 2-for-19 last week in six games with one RBI and a sacrifice hit. Reinhardt collected wins over Lindenwood-Belleville (IL), Saint Thomas University, Middle Georgia State College, and USC-Beaufort at the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Eagles had losses to Concordia (MI) and 7th-ranked University of Mobile during the tournament. RU is now 12-7 and opens Appalachian Athletic Conference play at Truett-McConnell College with a doubleheader March 8 before traveling to the Snowbird Invitational in Myrtle Beach, SC for nine games March 9-12. LACEY FRITZ — Southeastern Louisiana University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . had a pinch hitting appearance in a 3-1 loss to University of Texas-Arlington March 5. Fritz has appeared in 11 games, starting four. The Lions were 0-4 for the week and are now 12-8 for the season. Southeastern plays at Southern Mississippi March 8 before opening Southland Conference play at home March 11-12 in a three-game series with Abilene Christian University. BRIDGETT HAMPTON -- Walters State CC (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . has 11 plate appearances in 11 games. She has a pair of hits and has scored two runs with a .182 batting average. WSCC is 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association. The Lady Senators play at Dyersburg State (TN) March 11-12 in a four game series. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . has started seven games and appear in eight for the Panthers. She has a .389 batting average (7-for-18) and two RBI with a homerun and two doubles. Hordorff went 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBI March 5 in a doubleheader split at Maryville College. LaGrange is 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Panthers open an eight-game homestand March 9 with Berry College, followed by a doubleheader with Wesleyan College (GA) March 16. SAVANNA HUTCHINS — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . coaxed a walk and scored a run in two plate appearances during a doubleheader sweep Feb. 29 of University of the Cumberlands’ JV. The Lady Cougars play a doubleheader at Gordon State (GA) College March 8 before hosting a pair of doubleheaders against Jackson State (TN) CC March 11-12. CSCC is 10-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association. HUNTER IRVIN — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . was 0-for-4 in a game against St. Thomas University at the Gulf Shores Invitational March 6. For the season, she has a .125 batting average with two walks and two RBI. The Chargers lost both games of the conference matchup and fell to 11-21 overall and 1-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Jackson has a .181 batting average with two homers, 12 RBI, and five walks in 27 appearances. The Chargers are now 11-21 overall and 1-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. ASHLEY JORDAN — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph, Woodland HS) . . . the Chargers’ outfielder is hitting .323 with 12 RBI and seven stolen bases through 32 games. Defensively, Jordan has a .956 fielding percentage in 45 chances. The Chargers are 11-21 overall and 1-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. They host Southern Union State CC in a doubleheader March 9 and return to conference play March 12 with a doubleheader at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . went 2-for-15 last week in five games, but is 20-for-63 for the season for a .317 batting average. She has five extra base hits and five RBI and has started all 21 games in the outfield for the Eagles. Rain has stolen seven bases and has not made an error. She also has a pair of outfield assists. ERU (15-6 overall, 4-5 in the SSC) hosts a doubleheader with American International College (MA) March 8 and a doubleheader with Fisher College (MA) March 9 before traveling to University of Tampa March 11-12 for a three-game, Sunshine State Conference series. TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . went 12-for-21 in six games at the Gulf Shores Invitational last week as the Eagles went 4-2. The Eagles’ outfielder now has a .339 batting average with 11 RBI, a pair of doubles, and six walks. Reinhardt collected wins over Lindenwood-Belleville (IL), Saint Thomas University, Middle Georgia State College, and USC-Beaufort at the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Eagles suffered losses to Concordia (MI) and 7th-ranked University of Mobile during the invitational. RANDI WIMPY — Reinhardt University (Sr., Woodland HS) . . . the 2015 NAIA All-American has picked right up where she left off one year ago, with a .519 batting average (28-for-54) through 18 games. The Eagles’ senior catcher has 5 homers, 15 extra base hits, 12 walks, and 26 RBI. She also fashions a 1.019 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .609. Reinhardt was 4-2 last week at the Gulf Shores Invitational and is now 12-7 overall. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . has made three pitching appearances for the Bulldogs, with two innings pitched. Yantis has allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits and two walks. She worked the seventh inning this past week in an 8-4 loss at Jacksonville State University. Samford was 4-1 for the week with wins over Alabama-Birmingham and Tennessee State, along with winning two of three at Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs play at 4th-ranked Alabama March 8 and will play in the Maverick Classic in Arlington, TX March 11-13 facing 15th-ranked Arizona twice, UT-Arlington twice, and 24th-ranked Texas. BASEBALL CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . went 3-for-4 March 1 in a 10-6 win at Emory & Henry … was 2-for-3 scoring a run and driving in two in a 15-1 series opening win against Covenant College March 4 and had one hit in the third game of the series March 5. Dempsey is now hitting .421 for the season in 38 at bats with a pair of doubles and five RBI. He has also stolen four bases. Maryville went 4-0 last week and is now 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Scots host conference opponent, Averett (VA) University, in a three-game series March 12-13 and host Emory & Henry March 14. BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . .had two at bats and drove home a run in an appearance March 4 at Georgia College. UNG won 11-1 at Anderson University March 2, but was swept in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Georgia College March 4-6. The Nighthawks host conference foe, UNC-Pembroke March 11-13 in Dahlonega. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . .scored a run and coaxed a walk in a 1-for-5 performance as the Chargers’ defeated Cuyahoga CC 10-4 on March 4… went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored two runs in a 6-1 win over Guilford Tech CC March 5 … walked twice and went 1-for-2 with a run scored in an 8-6 loss to Guilford March 5 … finished 1-for-4 with a walk, run scored, and RBI in a 9-1 win over Guilford March 6. The GHC left fielder is hitting .280 with 6 RBI and 5 stolen bases in 21 games. All games at LakePoint in Emerson. TY FOWLER -- Tennessee Wesley College (Jr., Cartersville HS). . . made one appearance last week working 1 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run. That was the first run he has allowed this year as he has now thrown 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, no walks and has seven strikeouts. ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Sr., Woodland HS) . . . made three relief appearances last week, working 2 and 2/3 innings at home against Alabama, an inning and one-third against Auburn, and one inning against Michigan State. The Auburn and Michigan State games were part of the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, FL. Harris yielded only one earned run (vs. 23rd-ranked Alabama), five hits, and struck out five in the three appearances combined. His season ERA stands at 0.87 in 10 and 1/3 innings over six appearances. The Trojans record stands at 8-5. Troy plays at Samford March 8, at Jacksonville State March 9, and opens Sun Belt Conference play with a home, three-game series with Louisiana-Lafayette March 11-13. HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . .was 0-for-3, but drew a pair of walks in a home doubleheader sweep of Mississippi College March 5. . . went 1-for-4 with one RBI vs. Mississippi College March 6 as the Hawks completed a Gulf South Conference sweep of the Choctaws, 3-2. Hatfield has three starts and eight appearances for Shorter (10-9 overall; 4-5 GSC). The Hawks travel to Lincoln Memorial University March 8 and play a three-game, conference series at Valdosta State University March 12-13. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher was called on for two innings allowing no runs, hits, or walks in a 10-2 victory over Cuyahoga CC (OH) March 4 …Hood pitched 1 and 2/3 innings March 5 in an 8-6 loss to Guilford Tech CC (NC). He allowed no runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. He has now worked 7 and 2/3 innings on the season, striking out six with a 3.52 ERA. MASON ROBINSON — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . had a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored, a triple, and three RBI in a 10-3 win over Faulkner University March 3. WSDCC lost at Pensacola State College March 2 and lost at Gulf Coast State CC March 4. Robinson has a .188 batting average through 14 games and 48 at bats. He has one homerun and five extra base hits. He has drawn ten walks, driven in six runs, and stolen five bases. The Governors are now 11-6 and have games at Alabama Southern CC (DH) March 9, home against ASCC (DH) March 10, and home vs. Black Hawk College March 15. TRISTON SMITH — Young Harris College (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . started all four games this past week at shortstop as the Mountain Lions went 2-2 against Cedarville University and Augusta University. Smith went 5-for-15 at the plate with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Defensively he has been part of two double plays and has made only one error in 28 chances in seven games played. YHC is 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Mountain Lions play at Tusculum College March 8 and host a three-game conference series with Flagler College March 11-13. JO JO UNDERWOOD — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 0-for-2 in a 16-2 win over Army on March 4 … played third base and was 0-for-1 in a 6-4 loss to Army March 6. Underwood is 1-for-6 with a double and 2 RBI for the season. The Spartans (8-3) host UNC-Wilmington March 9 and will play in the Coastal Carolina Invitational March 11-12 in Conway, SC where they will play Illinois and Coastal Carolina two games each. TYLER WILL — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP made a two inning appearance during a 12-8 home loss to Transylvania (KY) University March 5. Will gave up a pair of runs, only one earned run, on three hits. He struck out two. Berry went 1-3 last week winning one of three with Transylvania and lost at home to Emory March 1. The Vikings (13-4 overall, 2-1 Southern Athletic Association) play LaGrange College at Thomas University March 8 and return home for a conference, three-game series with Hendrix College March 12-13. ASA WILLIAMS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . was the starting catcher for fellow former Cartersville Hurricane, Hunter Osborn, in a 1-0 defeat of Union College (KY) March 5. Williams was 0-for-3 at the plate in the contest. He now has a .226 batting average with two doubles and six RBI in 31 at bats. The Eagles swept a three-game series with Union March 5-6 to improve to 16-5 overall and 3-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. RU hosts Viterbo University (WI) for single games March 8-9 and hosts conference opponent, Montreat College (NC) in a three-game series March 11-12. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . the right-handed reliever worked three innings in a pair of appearances last week as the 13th-ranked Cougars went 4-1. Wilson pitched the final two innings of a 3-1 loss at Auburn-Montgomery March 2, holding the Warhawks to no runs while striking out three. He also pitched a scoreless final inning of a 10-3 win over Saginaw Valley State University March 5. He has now pitched 10 and 1/3 innings in six relief appearances with 11 strikeouts, 6 walks, with a 1.74 ERA, and opponents are hitting only .152 against him.
