That would make the 25-year-old signal caller potentially eligible to return for the season finale, but Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson stated last week that Lawrence would not return this season. Lawrence was placed in concussion protocol following a late hit in the Jags’ game with the Houston Texans. Before that, he was dealing with a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder, which will be surgically repaired. In his absence, Mac Jones has taken over the No. 1 quarterback spot for Jacksonville. Jacksonville (3-11) lost the Houston game on Dec. 1, won at Tennessee on Dec. 8, and lost at home to the New York Jets this past Sunday. - Tigers third, Wildcats fifth at annual Whoville Swimming Invitational
December 16, 2024 The Adairsville High School swimming team placed third, and Woodland was fifth this past Saturday at the 14-team Whoville Invitational hosted by the Tigers. Greenbrier won the meet with an overall total of 709.5 points. McIntosh (581), Adairsville (557), Rome (542), and Woodland (490.5) rounded out the top five. Adairsville’s boys had the highest point total, edging McIntosh 397-343.5. Woodland’s girls finished second behind Greenbrier in the women’s point totals. Three local relay teams earned GHSA State Meet qualifying times. The Adairsville boys 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay teams and the Woodland boys 200-yard freestyle relay team. December 15, 2024 The Woodland High School wrestling team finished second Saturday at the Cleveland (Tenn.) Duals. The Wildcats won four straight duals to reach the finals. The wins were over Knoxville Catholic (84-0), Summit (Tenn.) (36-27), Bradley Central (Tenn.) (43-33), and Huntsville (Ala.) (41-33), Host Cleveland High defeated Woodland in the finals, 50-21. The top individuals for Woodland were Adrian Zapata (4-0 at 126 pounds), John Gill (3-0 at 215), Dylan Couey (3-1 at 138), Christian Cothran (3-1 at 175), Owen Jones (3-1 at 190), and Zachary Wallace (2-1 at 165). Next on the Woodland schedule is the Pelham (Ala.) Duals on Friday and Saturday. CASS AND CARTERSVILLE WRESTLING RESULTS AT SMOKY MOUNTAIN DUALS The Cass High and Cartersville High wrestling teams competed this past weekend at the Smoky Mountain Duals in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Cass finished 4-2 in dual matches, while Cartersville finished 4-3. The Colonels picked up wins over St. Newmann Catholic (Fla.) (39-33), Martin (Ky.) (53-21), Seymour (Tenn.) (54-18), and Pigeon Forge (Tenn.) (55-19). The Cass losses were to Grundy (Va.) (42-29) and Johnson Central (Ky.) 52-26). The Canes had team wins over Wayne County (Ky.) (54-27), Anderson County (Tenn.) (40-37), Heritage (Tenn.) (59-24), and Martin (Ky.) (48-29). Cartersville lost to Lakeway Christian Academy (Tenn.) (57-23), Cabell Midland (W.Va.) (43-31), and St. Newmann Catholic (Fla.) (42-33). Top individual performers for Cass included Hunter Barrett (5-0 at 120 and 126), Aidan Piatt (5-0 at 150 and 157), and Kirecg Roe (5-1 at 190). The top individuals for Cartersville were Talan Nix (6-0 at 150), Cole Henson (6-1 at 157), and Jair Flores (4-1 at 113). Next on the Cartersville schedule is the Clash at the Creek Duals on Friday and Saturday at Coahulla Creek. Cass will host the Guerrilla Duals on Saturday. TIGERS GRAPPLE AT McCALLIE INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT On Saturday, the Adairsville High School wrestling team placed 16th of 31 teams at the McCallie Invitational Tournament in Chattanooga. The host McCallie School won the tournament with 240.5 points. Brentwood (Tenn) was second with 170 points, and Christian Brothers (Tenn.) was third with 163.5. Adairsville scored 78 team points. Jett Johnson finished 4-0 in the tournament and won the 285-pound weight class. Five other Tigers were 2-2 in their bouts, including Braxton Elrod (132-pounds), Hunter Dudley (150), Jay Chancey (165), David Coon (175), and Hayden Bailey (190). The Tigers return to action on Saturday at the Guerrilla Duals hosted by Cass.

December 14, 2024 The Cass basketball teams swept games at Unity Christian in Rome on Saturday, and the Cartersville boys added a home win over Trion. CASS GIRLS 49, UNITY CHRISTIAN 27 The Lady Colonels took control of their game at Unity Christian on Saturday afternoon by outscoring the host Lady Lions 14-4 in the third quarter. Cass led 18-15 at halftime and extended that margin to 32-19 by the end of the third period en route to a 22-point non-region win. KK Evans scored 14 points for Cass. Anizah Taylor finished with 10 points, and Cadie Paez added nine for the Lady Colonels. Anna Grace Wells led Unity Christian (1-5) with 12 points. Cass (6-5, 3-1) returns to region play on Tuesday, hosting Dalton at 6 p.m. CASS BOYS 66, UNITY CHRISTIAN 40 The Colonels built a 30-11 lead by halftime and cruised to a 66-40 non-region win Saturday at Unity Christian in Rome. Xavier Lowe paced the Colonels with 12 points. Derrick Sams and Jah’lil Anderson finished with 10 points. Da’mir McBride added seven for Cass. Andrew Sawyer scored 12 points for the host Lions (1-7). Cass (5-6, 2-2) hosts region-foe Dalton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 55, TRION 43 Wyatt Thomason and Will Bishop scored 18 and 17 points to lead the Hurricanes in a 55-43 home win Saturday over Trion. Shakai Taylor added eight points for Cartersville. The Canes led 25-22 at halftime and 39-29 after three quarters in their eventual 12-point win. Austin Cornett led Trion (2-2) with 18 points. Sam Mobbs scored 12 and Ashton Mason 11 points for the Bulldogs. Cartersville (5-3, 2-2) hosts Southeast Whitfield in a region contest on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
- Canes survive late threat for a region victory; Eagles take down Oakwood Christian
December 14, 2024 Local boys’ basketball teams won two of five games played Friday night. The Cartersville boys led most of the way but had to come from behind late to squeeze by visiting Hiram. The Excel Christian Academy boys won big in Emerson over visiting Oakwood Christian of Chickamauga. Elsewhere, Cass dropped a home decision to Cedartown, while Woodland fell at Dalton and Adairsville lost at Northwest Whitfield. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 62, HIRAM 61 The Hornets fought back from a 15-point deficit, got a steal and a layup, and took their first and only lead of the night with 0:32 remaining, but Nas Bennett made a last-second layup that lifted the Canes to a 62-61 region win Friday night at The Storm Center. Hiram called timeout with 0.9 seconds left and took a three-quarter court shot that missed at the buzzer. Cartersville boys' coach Mike Tobin Cartersville led 20-7 after one quarter, 33-16 at halftime, and 48-33 through three quarters before Hiram threatened in the final eight minutes. Mason McKinney and AJ Williams paced the Hornets with 28 and 21 points, respectively. Bennett led the Canes with 21 points. Wyatt Thomason scored 12, and Shakai Taylor chipped in nine. Cartersville (4-3, 2-2) hosts Trion on Saturday at 3 p.m. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 75, OAKWOOD 50 The Excel Eagles took control early and stayed unbeaten in region play Friday night with a 75-50 home win over Oakwood Christian. Excel led 42-23 by halftime and was up 63-35 after three quarters. Graham Myer led Oakwood (2-8, 0-1) with 25 points. Jayden Jinks scored 17 points to pace Excel. Kaiyu Huffman posted 14 points. Evan Chappel and Daniel Lewis added ten and nine points, respectively. ECA (7-4, 2-0) plays at Coahulla Creek on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CEDARTOWN 65, CASS BOYS 46 The Colonels started quickly Friday night and led Cedartown 23-14 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs’ defense clamped down the remainder of the night to halt Cass 65-46. Cedartown, who had four players reach double-figure scoring, led 31-29 at halftime and built a 50-39 advantage by the end of the third quarter. Quinlan Cothran scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Bulldogs (3-6, 1-3) in their first region win. Zane Pasley scored 14 points. Hayden Rittenhouse and Davion Smith added 11. Comari Nettles score 12 of his 14 points in the first half for Cass. Dylan Miller and Jason Brown added nine and eight points, respectively. Cass (4-6, 2-2) visits Unity Christian School on Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. start. DALTON 58, WOODLAND BOYS 28 Injuries to starters Isaiah Livsey and Amir Heath in the first quarter hampered the Wildcats’ effort at Dalton on Friday night in a 58-28 loss. Dalton improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 7-4A. Jayden Metcalf and Elijah Morris scored nine points for the Wildcats. Woodland (3-7, 0-3) travels to Cedartown on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 59, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 52 The host Bruins kept their season record spotless on Friday night with a hard-fought 59-52 win over Adairsville in Tunnel Hill. The Tigers led 13-11 after one quarter before Northwest regained the halftime lead, 28-23. The Bruins maintained a 45-39 advantage entering the final eight minutes. Caden Ramsey led the Bruins (6-0, 2-0) with 22 points. Gavin Nuckolls scored 11 for the Bruins. Tre Winters scored 21 points for the Tigers. Ben Abernathy followed with 11, and Tyrek Hames finished with 10. Xavious Nalls added eight. Adairsville (4-4, 2-1) visits Pope on Friday at 7 p.m.

December 14, 2024 The Cass and Cartersville girls' basketball teams grabbed home region wins Friday night while Adairsville and Woodland dropped contests on the road. CASS GIRLS 50, CEDARTOWN 47 The Lady Colonels won a back-and-forth tussle with visiting Cedartown Friday night and evened their season record with a 50-47 victory. Cass led a low-scoring first quarter, 7-3, but the Lady Bulldogs held an 18-16 advantage at the intermission. The Lady Colonels surged ahead 34-27 by the end of the third quarter and held off a late charge by Cedartown in the final quarter. Anizah Taylor scored 16 of her 17 points in the second half to lead the Cass scoring attack. KK Evans scored 10 points, and Cadie Paez added eight. Kenzlei Boozer led Cedartown (2-7, 1-3) with 18 points. Asia Ware tossed in 13. Cass (5-5, 3-1) plays at Unity Christian School on Saturday. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 65, HIRAM 33 Cartersville freshman point guard Zoe McCurry. The Lady Canes raced to a 21-2 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 65-33 home win Friday night over region-foe Hiram. Cartersville led 34-16 by halftime and extended the lead in the second half. Kaytlin Arnold scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Hurricanes. Zoe McCurry pitched in 10 and Bayley Stanley nine as Cartersville remained unbeaten in Region 7-4A. Damariah Windmon scored 16 points for the Lady Hornets (4-8, 3-1). Cartersville (5-5, 4-0) hosts Allatoona on Tuesday at 6 p.m. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 68, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 53 The Lady Tigers led 25-24 at halftime Friday night, but host Northwest Whitfield pulled away in the second half to stay undefeated and earned a 68-53 home win. The Lady Bruins outscored the Lady Tigers 23-13 in the third quarter to take command. Sloan Pender poured in 20 points, and Kennedy Baker had 16 for Northwest Whitfield (6-0, 2-0). NaXyria Roberts scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Olivia O’Tinger finished with eight points. Adairsville (4-6, 1-2) will host their annual Christmas Clash Tournament on Dec. 27, 28, and 30. The Lady Tigers will face Model in the opening round. DALTON 69, WOODLAND GIRLS 5 The Dalton girls won their third straight game Friday night and their first at home since a season-opening victory over McEachern with a 69-5 decision over Woodland. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 52, CASS 51 The Cartersville boys edged host Cass on Tuesday night 52-51 in a game that went down to a final missed shot. The McCallie School of Chattanooga and Thompson tied for the top spot at the event, followed by Toombs County, Ringgold, and Heritage-Catoosa. December 7, 2024 THERRELL 74, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 72 The Tigers battled toe-to-toe with Therrell Saturday afternoon at Etowah High School, but they could not pull the game out at the end, losing 74-72 at the Wood Elite Showcase. Therrell led 41-33 at halftime and 61-56 entering the fourth quarter before Adairsville made a fourth-quarter challenge. The Panthers (3-2) had 23 points from MJ McWhorter, 19 from Gordon Davis, and 14 from Torey Baisden. Tre Winters paced Adairsville with 24 points.
