- Cartersville 10U Purple reaches state finals
Drake Carver and Isaac McNair-Seigler combined to shut down the Clayton County A’s offense as the Cartersville 10U Purple all stars won their way into the 2015 GRPA 10U state championship game. Cartersville defeated Clayton County 6-1 and remains undefeated in the double elimination tournament and needs only one more win to secure the state GRPA title. Carver (4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 9 K, 4 BB) and McNair-Seigler (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) allowed only one, unearned run and kept the Clayton County offense in check most of the game. Other than the fourth inning run, no other Clayton County baserunner even reached third. The Cartersville Purple offense only produced five hits, but made the most of those hits and took advantage of five walks. Cartersville put up four runs in the first two innings and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the outcome. Avery Higgins and Trip Bradley both had doubles. Carver added a hit and an RBI. Thomas Norris and Will Litton had the other Cartersville hits. JaKiyon Porter had 2 RBI, Paul Gamble, McNair-Seigler, and Hunter Kelly added an RBI each. Porter and Carver each stole a base. After losing their opening game in the tournament, Cartersville Gray made an impressive run through the losers’ bracket before succumbing to Sumter County Friday night, 14-2. Cartersville Gray strung together four straight wins between the opening loss to Savannah Thunder and the loss on Friday. They had victories over Long County, Clayton County Orioles, Savannah Hot Rods, and a 6-5 win over Savannah Thunder to finish fourth. Cartersville Purple will play Saturday at 11:30am against the survivor of the losers’ bracket. If needed, a second championship game would immediately follow. The tournament is being played at Savannah’s Paulson Park.
- Bartow County LL softball at state tournament
The Bartow County Little League Softball 10U team opens play in the 2015 Georgia Little League Softball State Tournament in Columbus Saturday (July 11) with a 10am game against Northern Little League. The tournament is being hosted by Pioneer Little League in Columbus. Other teams competing at the state tournament include Hart County, West Point, Elbert County, Oconee County, and Warner Robbins American. The Georgia state tournament continues through Saturday, July 18.
- Bartow 14 year old Dizzy Dean baseball team is 2015 state runner-up
The Bartow County 14 year old Dizzy Dean all star team went toe-to-toe with Whitfield County for three games during the 2015 Dizzy Dean Sophomore State Tournament, but fell in a final winner-take-all final, 8-5. The tournament was played July 3-9 at Hobgood Park in Cherokee County. Jacob Cody, Parker Hardin, Bryson Markley, and Toby Queen had two hits each for Bartow in the championship game. Bartow used a trio of pitchers. Markley tossed 3 innings striking out three. Hardin worked 2 and 2/3 innings and struck out three. Connor Gallagher pitched an inning and a third and struck out three. Bartow had tournament wins over Hunter Park, Fannin County, and Summerville prior to the eventual champion, Whitfield County. Bartow then defeated Summerville for a second time in an elimination game to reach the championship round. Bartow needed to knock off Whitfield County twice in the finals of the double elimination event and was successful with a win Wednesday night (July 8), but Whitifleld took the final game on Thursday. - Local high school players get the attention of scouts at WWBA National Championship at LakePoint
Several local players, led by Cartersville High School rising senior, Elliott Anderson, and Cass High School rising junior, Bailey Campbell, had key performances for their teams this past week at Perfect Game's 2015 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship tournament. The event is the most heavily scouted tournament of its kind in the world with hundreds of college and professional baseball scouts in attendance on a daily basis. The event is played on dozens of fields in the metro Atlanta area and across north Georgia, but is headquartered and centered at the eight-field Perfect Game South complex at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. Other local high school players included Brett Gaddy (Cass), Jacob Fowler (Cartersville), Joseph Cuomo (Excel Christian), Cole Jameison (Cartersville), Sam Seaman (Adairsville), Carrington Evans (Cartersville), and Brycen Jones (Excel Christian). - Cartersville 10U Purple defeats Sumter County 4-0 at GRPA state tourney
Paul Gamble reached base three times and pitched four shutout innings to lead Cartersville 10U Purple to a 4-0 win over Sumter County at the GRPA 10U state tournament in Savannah. Gamble walked two and struck out five in his four innings of work on the mound. Drake Carver closed out the game on the bump with two shutout innings for the locals. Cartersville Purple pulled out the win, despite managing only two hits. Gamble drew a base on balls and came around to score to give Cartersville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Purple then used four walks, a pair of Sumter County passed balls, and a hit by Nicholas Kennedy to tally their other three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Kelly had the other Cartersville hit in the second inning. Cartersville 10U Purple now advances to face the Clayton County A’s at 6pm Friday at Paulson Park in Savannah. The winner qualifies for the state finals without a loss. The loser must win an elimination game just to reach the finals of the double elimination tournament. Meanwhile, Cartersville Gray 10U stayed alive in the same event with a pair of wins Thursday (July 9). Cartersville Gray lost its opener in the tournament Wednesday to Savannah Thunder 8-6 forcing them into the losers' bracket. They staved off elimination later Wednesday night by edging Long County 7-5. In two elimination games Thursday, Gray beat the Clayton County Orioles 11-3 and the Savannah Hot Rods 7-0. The tournament concludes on Saturday, July 11.

- Bartow 14 year old Dizzy Dean team pushes state championship round to deciding game
Bartow County forced a second championship game Wednesday night (July 8) at the Dizzy Dean 14 year old state tournament with a 9-6 win over Whitfield County. Whitfield entered the finals of the double elimination tournament unbeaten. They sent Bartow to the losers’ bracket earlier in the tournament. Bartow County and Whitfield County will square off Thursday (July 9) at 5:30 pm at Hobgood Park in Woodstock to determine the state championship. Bartow scored four times in the first inning to take an early lead, but Whitfield battled back to even the score at 6-6 going to the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Bartow’s Toby Queen started the inning with a walk one out walk. B.J. Roper followed by reaching on an error, followed by a walk to Jacob Cody to load the bases. Bryson Markley then doubled in two runs and Cody scored on a ground out to give Bartow a three run lead., 9-6. Queen pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win on the mound in relief of starter Markley and middle reliever Connor Gallagher. Markley struck out three over three innings. Gallagher tossed one inning and struck out one. Queen struck out two in the seventh. Roper and Cody had two hits apiece and both scored twice to lead the Bartow offense. Gallagher, Markley, Austin Baker, and Parker Hardin added one hit each.
- GHSA reclassification committee to hold open meeting regarding upcoming cycle
There will be one final meeting of the Reclassification Committee prior to the regularly-scheduled fall meeting of the State Executive Committee. This meeting will take place at 10 a.m., on Monday July 20, 2015 at the Thomaston-Upson County Civic Center. The purpose of the meeting is to review all reclassification proposals to date, to begin to focus on strategies for the committee as we move closer to the August 17th State Executive Committee meeting. GHSA council Alan Connell will be in attendance to guide the procedures for votes, etc., as proposals are eliminated or moved forward. The meeting is open to anyone wishing to attend. The Civic Center is located about 7/10ths of a mile east of the GHSA office just off Highway 74 (to Macon). The address is 101 Civic Center Drive.
- Cartersville Purple 10U cruises to state GRPA tourney opener win
Cartersville Purple 10U opened the 2015 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament Wednesday with a four-inning, 14-0 win over the Savannah Hot Rods. The 10 and under state tournament is being hosted by Savannah and Paulson Park. Cartersville Purple 10U scored six runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second, and four more in the third to complete the rout. Paul Gamble (1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 K) and Drake Carver (2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K) combined their pitching efforts to complete the four inning shutout. Cartersville’s offense out hit Savannah 14-2 in the contest. Isaac McNair-Seigler (3 RBI), Carver (double, triple, RBI), Hunter Kelly (double) , and A.J. Christina (2 RBI) had two hits each. Will Litton (triple, 2 RBI), Nicholas Kennedy (RBI), Trip Bradley (RBI), and JaKiyon Porter added the other Cartersville Purple hits. Cartersville Purple 10U plays Sumter County Thursday (July 9) at 6pm at Paulson Park in Savannah. In other action, Cartersville 10U Gray was edged by Savannah Thunder 8-6 and was scheduled to play Long County in an elimination game late Wednesday. The 10U GRPA state tournament continues in Savannah through Saturday, July 11.
- Bartow 14 year old Dizzy Dean team forces winner-take-all state title game
The Bartow County 14 year old Dizzy Dean all stars reached a winner-take-all state championship game. Bartow survived a pair of elimination games Wednesday night with a 12-6 victory over Summerville and a victory over Whitfield County. It was the first loss in the state tournament for Whitfield County who had previously beaten Bartow. Both teams now have one loss and will meet in a final championship round game Thursday (July 9) at Hobgood Park in Woodstock. The game is scheduled for 5:30pm. Details from the first championship round game Wednesday night were not available at the publishing time of this article. Bartow Sports Zone will report on that game later. In the earlier elimination game over Summerville, Bartow scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the seventh frame to do the bulk of their damage. B. J. Roper was the starting pitcher for Bartow County. He tossed four innings, allowed four runs, and struck out three. Bryson Markley pitched the fifth and struck out a pair. Connor Gallagher tossed the sixth inning and recorded one strikeout, and Landon Ayers worked the final inning and had one strike out. Bartow was led at the plate by Austin Baker, Cody Parramore and Markley with a pair of hits each. Toby Queen, B. J. Roper, Kaleb Chance, and Gallagher each added a hit.
- Bartow 10U softball with pitching machine edged in state tourney opener
The Bartow County Recreation Department 10 and under girls with pitching machine all stars were three outs away from an opening round victory in the GRPA State Tournament at Effingham County on Wednesday (July 8), but were edged in the final inning.. With Bartow leading Thomasville YMCA 11-10 going to their final frame, Thomasville rallied for two runs to pull out the victory 12-11. Bartow had 20 hits in the contest. Thomasville totaled 14. For Bartow, Amaya Ford went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Alyssa Jarrett went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Haley Dishmon, Harley Owens (RBI), Emma Hensley (RBI), Malaney Teems, Savannah Jordan, and Kelly Young all went 2-for-4. Bartow will now play Pooler in an elimination game Thursday morning (July 9). The winner of that contest will face the winner of Washington County and Coffee County later in the day.
- Cartersville Rec Department continues with plenty of summer activities
As we move deeper into July, the City of Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department still has plenty of summer activities continuing. The fourth summer session of Swim Lessons are available July 20-30 (2 weeks, Mon-Thur) at 5:30pm or 6:30pm. The lessons are for ages 6 month to adult and the cost is $50. A junior lifeguard training camp for ages 11-15 is July 21-31. The camp teaches everything you need to know about being a lifeguard. Red Cross CPR and first aid are included. The cost is $100 and registration is available online at cityofcartersville.org or call 770-387-5626 The public pools at Dellinger Park and Aubrey Street remain open through August 2 and the pool at Dellinger Park will be open on weekends through Labor Day. Developmental tennis camps for players age 4 to 15 continue in July. Register online at cityofcartersville.org or call 770-387-5628.
