  • Cartersville gymnastics team runner-up at five-team meet

    March 30, 2026 The Cartersville High School gymnastics team hosted and finished second in a five-team meet on Saturday, March 28, at Cartersville Twisters Gym. Woodstock (98.900) won the meet, followed by Cartersville (98.400), River Ridge (95.200), Providence Christian (93.500), and Allatoona (86.900). Emerie Elrod led the Lady Canes with a 9.000 on vault. She also had strong routines on beam (8.100) and floor (8.700). Sydney Jackson scored 8.500 on vault, 8.200 on bars, and 8.000 on beam for a solid all-around performance. Katy Grace Wolfe contributed across three events with an 8.200 on beam, and team points on vault and bar. Additional contributions came from Adalynn Weir (8.400) on beam and floor, and Kyndal Shook (8.000) on floor.  Ellie Kate Jones earned a 9.000 on vault, qualifying for the GHSA Gymnastics Preliminary Meet. She will join Elrod as an individual qualifier for the State Preliminary Meet.

Each month, local high schools select an Elite Athlete of the Month from their varsity programs and share the information about their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3 FM and AM 1450, WBHF in Cartersville. Alexa Damer is the March 2026 Elite Athlete of the Month for Adairsville High School. A junior striker and three-year starter on the Lady Tigers’ soccer team, Damer leads the team with 30 goals and six assists.  “Alexa is a complete player with a high understanding of the game of soccer,” said Adairsville soccer coach Dave Sexauer. “She is exceptionally coachable, a good team player, and possesses individual soccer skills above her peers. She makes those around her better with her tactical decisions.” The daughter of John and Chanterelle Damer, Alexa would like to play college soccer and study to become a physical therapist. Emerie Elrod is the March 2026 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School. Emerie, the daughter of Kelly Elrod, is a senior gymnast and cheerleader. She has been a member of Cartersville’s competition cheer, Game Day cheer, sideline cheer, and varsity gymnastics teams.  The competition cheer teams have won four straight region titles and state titles in 2024 and 2025. She also finished fifth on vault at the 2025 GHSA gymnastics championships. “Emerie is a multi-sport athlete with outstanding leadership skills and dedication,” said Canes’ gymnastics coach Kimberly Mosteller. “Her hard work, determination, and leadership have made a lasting impact on the gymnastics and cheer programs at Cartersville.” Elrod plans to attend Georgia Southern University to major in Nursing. Jordan Howard represents Woodland High School as its March 2026 Elite Athlete of the Month. The son of Adriane and Natorio Howard, Jordan is a senior member of the Wildcats’ swimming and track team. He swims the sprint events and competes in sprints and hurdles on the track and field team. “Jordan broke personal records in the first meet of the season and continues to improve,” said Woodland coach Rebecca Beard-Ardnt. “He is hardworking on the track and in the classroom, consistently showing dedication. He even makes up training sessions on his own when he misses practice. He’s always willing to help classmates or athletes who may be struggling, and sets a strong example.” Howard is on the A-B Honor Roll and in dual enrollment. He plans to continue his student-athlete experience at Berry College. Kasey Jacobs is the March 2026 Elite Athlete of the Month for Cass High School. The son of Jamie and Candace Jacobs, Kasey is a sophomore catcher on the Colonels’ baseball team. Jacobs currently has a .313 batting average and an on-base percentage of .433, while catching every inning so far this season. “Kasey is a hard worker on the field and in the weight room,” said Cass baseball coach Matt Thompson. “He has grown tremendously this season and continues striving to make himself and the team better.” Editor's Note: The respective schools and athletic departments supply Bartow Sports Zone and WBHF with photos and bios.     March 28, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Georgia Highlands College softball swept a conference doubleheader at Andrew College on Saturday, winning 13-0 and 20-2. Haley Curtis tossed a three-hit shutout in Game 1. She allowed only one walk and struck out four in the five-inning win. CeCe Williams was the Chargers’ winning pitcher in the second game, allowing only two unearned runs on three hits and four walks. Williams fanned two. Mary Catherine Kimball (two doubles, three RBI) and Williams (home run, triple, double, sac fly, four RBI) led the GHC offense in the doubleheader with five hits each. Jordan Walberg followed with four hits and one RBI. Emma Darrow (two doubles, triple, two RBI), Maci Andrews (two doubles, one RBI), and Emmalee Freeman (double, two RBI) each produced three hits. Athens Hudson (home run, four RBI), Emily Ferro (sac fly, three RBI), Anslee Logan (three RBI), Madelyn Johnson (triple, RBI), Alivia Fannin (double, four RBI), and Tatum Richardson (double, RBI) each contributed two hits on the day. Ahmani Green (home run, two RBI), Hailey Love (double, RBI), and Abbey Congrove each added one hit. The losses dropped the Lady Tigers to 2-22 overall and 0-7 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Georgia Highlands (15-10, 5-2) plays a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Cleveland State CC (TN).

CANES EDGE WILDCATS IN PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUT In a hard-fought battle that went the distance, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes edged the Woodland Wildcats 2-1 in penalty kicks Friday night at Wildcats’ Stadium to claim a crucial Region 7-AAAA victory. Woodland got on the board first in the 37th minute when Marvin Morales curled home a free kick, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Hurricanes responded in the 79th minute of regulation when Jayden Nevarez found the net to even the score at 1-1. Neither team could break the deadlock through the remainder of regulation or in two five-minute overtime periods. With the game tied 1-1 after extra time, the outcome was decided from the penalty spot.  Woodland’s Luis Sanchez, Hunter Limbaugh, and Marvin Morales made kicks for the Wildcats. Ben Jones, Josue Enriquez, Filberto Duarte, and Brayden Alonso made kicks for the Canes. With each team missing one kick high over the crossbar, it was a save by Cartersville goalkeeper Cash Priest on a Woodland attempt that made the difference. Cartersville goalkeeper Cash Priest was a hero in the shootout, making a key save on Aiden Carrillo’s attempt.  The win improved Cartersville’s record to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in Region 7-AAAA. The Hurricanes will look to build on the momentum when they travel to North Murray on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Woodland fell to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the region. The Wildcats will host Central-Carroll on Thursday at Wildcats’ Stadium. LADY CATS CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT WIN OVER LADY CANES The Woodland Lady Cats celebrated their 2026 seniors in style Friday night, blanking the Cartersville Lady Canes 2-0 at Wildcats’ Stadium. Both goals came in the first half as Woodland jumped out to a quick lead. Mahdi Hernandez opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Ansley Burns. Maddie Weightman then added to the lead with a header off a free kick taken by Sammy Espinosa, giving the Lady Cats a 2-0 advantage at halftime. The second half remained scoreless as Woodland’s defense held firm to preserve the shutout. The victory improved Woodland’s record to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in Region 7-AAAA. The Lady Cats will return to action at home on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Central-Carroll. Cartersville dropped to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the region. The Lady Canes will look to bounce back when they travel to North Murray on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. COLONELS ROUT PEPPERELL The Cass Colonels put on an offensive show Friday night, routing the Pepperell Dragons 10-0 at Pepperell High School in a game that ended early by mercy rule. Cass dominated from the opening whistle, scoring all seven of its first-half goals in a relentless attack. Louis Morales led the charge with four first-half goals, three of them assisted by Anthony Diaz. Diaz himself added three goals in the half, including one assisted by Morales, as the Colonels built a commanding 7-0 halftime lead. The onslaught continued in the second half.  Easton Misztak scored two quick goals in the first five minutes, with one assisted by Diaz and the other by Jacob Quiggly. Jorge Alvarez capped the scoring in the 53rd minute with a goal assisted by Francisco Castaneda, triggering the mercy rule and ending the contest. The Colonels improved to 7-5 with the lopsided victory and will host Coahulla Creek on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Cochran Stadium. Pepperell fell to 3-8 on the season. LADY COLONELS COME UP SHORT The Cass Lady Colonels fell at Pepperell on Friday night in a hard-fought non-region contest that saw the host Lady Dragons score the game’s only goal in the 25th minute. “The girls battled,” said Cass coach Kyle Calandra, “but we just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities.” Pepperell improved to 8-2 on the season. Cass (4-8) welcomes Coahulla Creek on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

CARTERSVILLE 6, WOODLAND 0 CARTERSVILLE 14, WOODLAND 4 The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes stayed unbeaten in Region 7-AAAA and completed a series sweep of the Woodland Wildcats by winning both games of a home doubleheader on Friday. The Canes won the two games on Friday, 6-0 and 14-4. Pitchers Nolan Elrod and Wyatt Earwood combined for a shutout in the first game on Friday. Elrod struck out 10 and scattered three hits and one walk in the first six innings. Earwood struck out one and faced the minimum in the seventh inning. The Canes’ Logan Buchanan started Game 2, picked up the pitching win, and struck out five in the first three innings. Collier Jordan (1R, 0ER, 1BB, 1K), J.B. Nichols (1ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K), and Cohen Tanner (2ER, 1H, 2BB) each worked one inning for Cartersville on the mound. Grant Tidwell (5.1 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 5BB, 1K) and Alfredo Romo (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) pitched in Game 1 for the Wildcats. CASS 12, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 0 CASS 12, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 0 The Cass Colonels swept a doubleheader at Southeast Whitfield on Friday night in Dalton behind strong pitching performances from Dustin Wallin in the first game, and a combined no-hitter by Noah Rogers and Andrew Ray in the nightcap.  Cass won both games by identical 12-0 final scores, and swept the week’s three games with the Raiders. Wallin gave up just two hits and no walks in Friday’s opener. He struck out 13 of 21 Raiders batters faced. In Game 2 on Friday, Rogers struck out four and walked six without a hit in the first four innings. Ray walked one, but picked off the baserunner to retire the only three batters he faced to wrap up the no-hitter. Maddox Koontz (RBI) and Rogers (double, four RBI) led the Colonels’ offense in the two games with four hits each. Aidan Castaneda and Wallin (three RBI) each finished with three hits. Kasey Jacobs (double, two RBI), Landon Lamb (two RBI), and Landon Farmer (double, RBI) contributed two hits in the doubleheader. Zach Stiles (two RBI) had one hit, and Dawson Warner added one RBI. The losses dropped Southeast Whitfield to 2-19 overall and 1-11 in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (7-14, 4-8) hosts Allatoona on Tuesday to begin their next region three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader at Allatoona on Friday.

The Cass boys placed third. The Lady Colonels scored 134 points, followed by Coosa (64), Gordon Central (30), and Murray County (14). Gordon Central won the boys’ meet with 109 points, followed by Coosa (66), Cass (62), and Murray County (33).   • Tigers win second straight, Lady Tigers soccer drops non-region contest

    March 26, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Adairsville Tigers put together their most complete performance of the season, rolling to a 7-2 victory over the host Bowdon Red Devils on Friday night. Adairsville jumped out to a commanding lead early, scoring four goals in the first half to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime. The Tigers added three more in the second half to cruise to the win. Micah Pittman opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an assist from Greg Munoz. Jose Lupian made it 2-0 in the 25th minute with Angel Hernandez picking up the assist. Cooper Souders pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute on a feed from Jake Barszcz, and Greg Munoz converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute to cap the first-half barrage. Lupian added his second goal of the night in the 54th minute, assisted by Hayden Barnes. Axel Almanza-Partida found the net in the 68th minute with another assist from Hernandez, and Ismael Garcia rounded out the scoring for Adairsville in the 72nd minute off a pass from Moonan Poach. Bowdon scored twice late — once in the 64th minute and again in the 74th minute — but could not mount a serious comeback. Adairsville goalkeeper Charlie Potter was outstanding, turning aside 15 shots to preserve the victory. “We are starting to develop team chemistry as our experience level grows,” said Adairsville coach John Terrell. “Tonight was the most complete game we have played. These guys have started to develop confidence, and are making unselfish plays.”The win improved Adairsville to 2-10 on the season, marking their second straight victory. The loss dropped Bowdon to 0-7. The Tigers will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Murray County on Tuesday. LADY TIGERS FALL TO CLASS AAAA ALLATOONA The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team stepped up in classification Thursday night at Tigers’ Stadium, but lost a non-region match to the Class AAAA Allatoona Lady Buccaneers, 5-0. Allatoona, the Region 7-AAAA regular season champs, was a tough challenge for Adairsville and controlled the contest from the opening whistle. The Lady Bucs converted their early pressure into goals and built a 3-0 advantage at the intermission. The second half saw Allatoona (8-3) convert two more scoring opportunities to seal the decisive victory. “We got a taste of a playoff-caliber team tonight,” Coach Dave Sexauer said afterward. “We closed out the night with key takeaways as we continue preparing for the playoffs, focusing on speed and quick decisions.” The Lady Tigers (11-2) now turn their attention to another non-region match in their state playoff preparations. Adairsville travels to Murray County on Tuesday.

  • Canes' golf team wins third tourney in six days

    March 26, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cartersville High School boys’ golf team won its third tournament trophy in six days on Thursday by capturing the North Georgia Invitational at The Farm in Dalton. The Hurricanes won the Chris Kirk Classic at Eagle Watch Golf Club on Tuesday, and won the Five-Star Classic last Saturday at Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta. The Canes fired a 7-over par 295 total on Thursday, with Christian Heritage of Dalton finishing as runner-up. Reid Henson led Cartersville with a 2-under par 70, and was joined by teammates Bodie Brumlow (74) and Carsen Stanfield (75) on the All-Tournament team. The Hurricanes will split their squad next week. Part of the team will play on Monday and Tuesday in Columbus at the Larry Gaither Invitational at Bull Creek. The others will play on Monday in the Wolfpack Classic hosted by North Paulding High School at Bentwater Golf Club.

  • Generals take rubber game of series with Adairsville

The region foes split the first two games of the three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Generals won 6-2 in Ringgold, and the Tigers won 1-0 at Adairsville. Thursday’s game saw four lead changes, but the Generals scored three unanswered runs across the seventh and eighth innings to escape with the win. Four pitchers worked for Adairsville in the loss, including starter Hudson Parr (5 IP, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 7K), Evan Hardin (1 IP, 2ER, 0H, 3BB), Tyler Parker (0.0 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB), and Westin Barfield (1.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 2BB, 3K). Harrison Cole (home run, three RBI) and Barfield had two hits for the Tigers. Matthew Cook (RBI), Kaden Coker (RBI), Haydin Miller, Brody Varner, Hardin, and Parr each added one hit. The Generals improved to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (16-6, 8-3) hosts Ringgold in a non-region game on Friday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m.

    March 25, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Adairsville starting pitcher Kaden Coker tossed a complete-game gem Wednesday evening, leading the Tigers to a 1-0 home win over Heritage-Catoosa. Coker scattered three hits and two walks across seven innings of work to shut out the Generals. He struck out 13 of the 26 batters he faced. Heritage, who won the first game of the three-game Region 7-AAA series 6-2 on Tuesday, received strong pitching performances from two hurlers. Adairsville’s lone run was unearned in the fourth inning, scoring on a pair of infield errors by the Generals. Matthew Cook had two hits for the Tigers, including one double. Brody Varner, Hudson Parr (double), Hayden Miller, and McCayden Hufstetler each added one hit in the win. Heritage (12-7, 6-2) will host Adairsville (16-5, 8-3) in the series finale on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
