- Canes, Wildcats, and Colonels all suffer road losses Friday
MILL CREEK 7, CARTERSVILLE 0 Hoschton, GA — Mill Creek junior right hand pitcher, Christian Rutherford, tossed a perfect game, no-hitter Friday night as the Hawks defeated the Canes, 7-0. Mill Creek scored two runs in the home half of the second inning and added four more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. The Hawks added a final run in the bottom of the sixth. Bryan Petty was 2-for-2 with a walk and drove in three runs to lead Mill Creek’s offense. Cameron Turley, Jay Pendley (RBI), and Matthew Lewis (RBI) also had two hits. The Hawks improved to 4-4 with the win. Jacob Fowler (3 IP, 6R, 5ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K) was handed the pitching loss. Mason Barnett (2 IP, 0R, 3BB, 1HBP, 1K) and Zach Yancey (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 3K) also took the mound for the Canes. Cartersville (4-6) turns its attention to Region 7-AAAA play Tuesday at Gilmer. The Canes also entertain Northwest Whitfield on Thursday (March 24) and travel to Pickens on Friday (March 25) for region games. SEQUOYAH 3, WOODLAND 2 Hickory Flat, GA — The Woodland Wildcats and Sequoyah Chiefs battled through five scoreless innings before Sequoyah won a back-and-forth struggle over the final two innings. The Wildcats pushed across a run in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. Jacob Frye and Hunter Reaid reached on back-to-back singles with two outs, then Frye scored on an infield error off the bat of Grant Robinson. Sequoyah tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a walk and two singles. Woodland regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the seventh. Brandon Allen doubled to lead off the frame, advanced to third on a pased ball, and scored on an RBI single by Cauy Williams. The Chiefs (7-6 overall, 6-3 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Zeitler doubled to start the inning and scored on a Tres Zenchuck single. A single by Wobleski moved Zenchuck to third and he scored the game-deciding run on a wild pitch. Patrick Conlin (5.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 10K) started on the mound for Sequoyah. Tyler Koprowski (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K ) entered in the sixth to pick up the win. Corey Linz retired the final out for the Chiefs with a strikeout after walking a batter. Mitchell Taylor (6.2 IP, 3ER, 8H, 1BB, 9K) was the Wildcats’ starting pitcher and suffered the loss on the mound despite a complete-game effort. Woodland (2-10 overall, 1-8 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) has a three-game series with Creekview next week, hosting on Monday (March 21) and Friday (March 25) and traveling to Canton on Wednesday (March 23). All start times are 5:55pm. ROME 3, CASS 1 Rome, GA -- Trailing 1-0 heading to the fourth inning Friday night, the Colonels tied Rome. The Wolves scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, however, for what turned out to be the game’s decising runs. Rome senior pitcher, Jacob Harrell, kept Cass in check the remainder of the game for a 3-1 sub-region win that also earned the Wolves their second victory in the three-game series. The Colonels managed only three hits. One each by Jake Collum, Bailey Campbell, and Steven Spell. Bett Gaddy had the only Cass RBI. Ja’Kolbi Griffin had two hits for Rome (8-3, 4-2 in Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A). Collum (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) was saddled with the pitching loss. Cody Johnson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) took the mound in the sixth inning. Cass starts a three-game series with Dalton Monday, March 21 in Dalton. The Colonels host on Wednesday, March 23, and return to Dalton on Friday, March 25. All start times are 5:55pm.
- Tigers rebound to defeat Murray Co. on penalty kicks
The Adairsville boys soccer team bounced back from a Tuesday night loss to Calhoun to defeat Murray County Thursday night in a Region 6-AAA match. The visiting Indians grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Tigers battled back with 13 minutes remaining to score the tying goal. Chris Rodriguez scored the tying goal with an assist from Danny Carillo. The score remained tied through the remainder of regulation time and two five minute overtime periods, sending the region battle to a penalty kicks tiebreaker. Adairsville connected on all five penalty kicks. Joseph Pacheco, Carillo, Rodriguez, Jesus Garcia, and Salvador Grimaldo Jr. each found the net for the Tigers. B.J. Harman finished with 17 saves for Adairsville at goalkeeper and the Tigers' defense was credited with a key effort in denying the Indians' offense most of the night. "Our defense played a great game," said Adairsville coach Kelly Abernathy. "Most of their (Murray County) shots were from long range. The guys kept them from penetrating the box most of the night." The victory improved the Tigers' season record to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in region play. "Give the offense credit also," noted Abernathy. "They moved the ball really well and controlled the ball for most of the game." Adairsville entertains region rival Sonoraville next Thursday (March 24).
- 7th-ranked Lady Tigers cruise past Murray, face Calhoun Tuesday
The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team took care of business Thursday night at home, defeating Murray County 9-0. Emily Collum scored the first two goals of her ‘hat trick’ performance in the game in the first ten minutes of the game. Kaitlyn Webster put Adairsville ahead 3-0 off an assist from Haley Pittman in the 12th minute. Pittman added a goal in the 25th minute and Chloe Cochran fed Katie Lawhorn in the 34th minute for a 5-0 Lady Tigers’ lead at halftime. In the second half, Aimee Pacheco scored off an assist from Lauren Stephenson in the 44th minute and Pittman found the net in the 56th minute. In the 67th minute, Collum completed her three goal night and Havyn Isaac added the Lady Tigers’ final tally in the 76th minute. Isaac and Hensley Laney both played in goal for Adairsville to record the shutout. The 7th-ranked Lady Tigers (AJC poll), now 9-0 overall and 3-0 in Region 6-AAA, play at Calhoun Tuesday, March 22.
- Excel girls tennis defeats North Cobb Christian
The Excel girls tennis team defeated North Cobb Christian Thursday afternoon, 4-1. Callaway Ford won her No. 2 singles line match, 6-1, 6-0; Tessa Thorbrough won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2; and the No. 1 line doubles team of Whitney Harris and Mattie Griffin won 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. North Cobb Christian forfeited the No. 2 doubles line. North Cobb Christian won the boys match, 5-0.
- Tigers win in extra innings, Excel shutout by Fellowship
It took an extra inning, but the Adairsville Tigers pulled out a back-and-forth battle Thursday night at home over the Coahulla Creek Colts, 6-5. Hunter Hice drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth with a double to cap a 4-for-5 night to rally the Tigers. Adairsville took leads of 1-0 in the first inning and 3-1 after five innings before the Colts scored three in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. The Tigers responded with a tying run in the bottom of the six, but Coahulla Creek regained a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. Adairsville tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, kept the Colts (6-5, 1-1 6-AAA) off the board in the eighth, and scored the game winner in the bottom of the inning. Orry Carter (2.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K) picked up the pitching victory in relief for the Tigers. Noah O’Kelley (5.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 1H, 5BB, 5K) started on the bump for Adairsville. Hunter Hice had four hits and a pair of RBI for the Tigers. Landon Howren, Hayden Morrow, and Cole Hewatt had the other Adairsville hits. Kyler Pelfrey and Carter both drove in a run. Adairsville (5-4 overall, 2-1 in Region 6-AAA) plays at Sonoraville Friday and will entertain Ringgold Tuesday (March 22). Both games are key region matchups for the Tigers. FELLOWSHIP CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 14, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0 Excel Christian Academy was blanked Thursday night by visiting Fellowship Christian, 14-0, in five innings. The Paladins took advantage of ten hits and ten Eagles’ errors for the mercy, run-rule victory. “The errors continue to plague us,” Excel coach Mike Cuomo pointed out. “We are just making too many physical and mental mistakes.” Fellowship (6-5) scored six runs over the first three innings of play, but it was an eight-run fourth that buried the Eagles. Christian Carpenter tossed a complete game, four hit shutout for the Paladins. He allowed no walks and struck out two. Jordan Wilkie, Trace Still, Marco Haro, and Darius Thrower had the ECA hits. Wilkie’s hit was a double. Joseph Cuomo (3.2 IP, 14R, 1ER, 10H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss. Wilkie (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) also took the mound for the Eagles. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and do what we need to do to get our guys motivated and ready to play,” Cuomo concluded. Excel Christian (1-8), has three home games next week. King’s Ridge Christian (Mon, Mar 21, 5:30pm), Pinecrest Academy (Tue, Mar 22, 5:30pm), and Mt. Pisgah Christian (Thr, Mar 24, 5:30pm) at LakePoint in Emerson.

- Colonels even series with Rome; Canes and Cats fall
The Cass Colonels scored six runs in the third inning to take control of the middle game of a three-game series this week with Rome. The Colonels added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on their way to an 8-2 sub-region 7-AAAAA-A victory. Rome won the first game of the series Monday night, setting up a rubber game in the series Friday at Legion Field in Rome (5:55pm). Cody Johnson had an RBI double and an RBI single in the third inning rally. Baley Campbell, Boo Reed, Steven Spell, and Casey Patterson all had RBI singles. Johnson finished the night with three hits and three RBI. Patterson had two RBI on a pair of hits, and Spell had three hits and one RBI. Reed had two hits and one RBI. Parker Hyde and Ja’kolbi Griffin had two hits each for Rome (7-3 overall, 3-2 in 7-AAAAA-A). Evan Hinton (6 IP, 2ER, 7H, 0BB, 5K) put in an excellent performance on the mound for the Colonels to earn the win. Reed (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) pitched the seventh. Cass (4-6 overall, 3-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) makes the trip to Rome Friday for a 5:55pm start. COLLINS HILL 9, CARTERSVILLE 1 Collins Hill struck for six runs in the first two innings Wednesday night on their way to a 9-1 victory over visiting Cartersville in Suwanee. The Canes actually led 1-0 after one-half inning, scoring on a hit, a walk, and an error. Noah Daniel singled to open the game and moved to third on a passed ball and a groundout. After Cole Jamieson walked, Zach Yancey reached on an error at third base that allowed Daniel to score. Cartersville reloaded the bases with another walk, but could do no more damage. Three Collins Hill pitchers combined to scatter six Canes hits and allow no more runs. Parker Tidwell (double), J.P. Martin, Parker Roberson, Daniel, Jamieson, and Yancey (double) had the Hurricanes’ hits. Elliott Anderson (2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB) started for the Canes and suffered the pitching loss. Mason Barnett (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K) and Harrison Osborn (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) also took the mound for Cartersville. Caleb Watson and Nasim Nunez led the Eagles’ offense with two hits and two RBI each. The Canes (4-5) travel to Mill Creek Thursday for a 5:30pm start and begin Region 7-AAAA play next Tuesday (March 22) at Gilmer in a 5:30pm start. SEQUOYAH 4, WOODLAND 3 A tight game was decided in the seventh inning when the visiting Chiefs scored twice for a 4-3 win. Sequoyah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Wildcats scored a run in the third and two more in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. JacobFrye doubled and HunterReaid drove him home with a single to right field for Woodland’s third inning run. In the sixth, Grant Robinson singled to left field and Emanuel Jones was entered as a runner. Brandon Allen walked and Cauey Williams grounded out to shortstop, scoring Jones. Noah Ludy doubled to left field driving home Allen to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage. Sequoyah (6-6, 5-3 in 7-AAAAA-A) scored twice in the top of the seventh on a pair of singles, two walks, and an error. Reaid singled with two outs in the seventh for his third hit of the game, but the Wildcats could do no additional damage. Woodland (2-9 overall, 1-7 in 7-AAAAA-A) travels to Sequoyah Friday at 5:55pm for Game 3 of the series.

Makayla Knuchel shot a 38 to lead all players as the Woodland Lady Cats' golf team defeated North Paulding 132-139 Wednesday afternoon. The match was hosted by Woodland at Woodland Hills Golf Club.
