Cartersville’s defensive front was dominant and the offense scored on all but one possession in the first half as the Purple Hurricanes cruised to a 42-0 scrimmage victory Friday night at Woodland. Trevor Lawrence found Terrius Callahan for an 11-yard touchdown pass less than 5 minutes into the game on Cartersville’s first drive for the opening score. Tiamon Pennymon had a key rush on the opening drive and Lawrence converted a pair of third downs and a fourth down situation to keep the drive moving despite several early penalties. “That concerned me a little,” said Cartersville head coach Joey King. “We want to play as cleanly as possible without turnovers and without penalties, but we overcame a few early penalties and that’s one of the things we talk about with our guys. Penalties are going to happen, so that’s an important attribute.” Sophomore Evan Williams scored on a 39-yard reverse for the Canes’ second touchdown. A Lawrence to Auston Davis six-yard touchdown pass (7:58, 2Q) capped the next drive that included big Lawrence completions to Pennymon and Miller Forristall and made it 21-0. Trey Creamer capped the next 56-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard run (4:16, 2Q) to make it 28-0 and Lawrence scampered 57 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the half to make it 35-0. Lawrence finished the half with over 250 yards passing (19 of 24) and two scores. Dominique Williams scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter that capped an 85-yard drive for the Canes final score. Antoine Jefferson had a long run and a key catch in the drive that made the final score 42-0. Cartersville’s defense was dominant for much of the three quarters of varsity work and at one point forced five consecutive three-and-outs. “That’s a really good and well coached football team,” said Woodland head coach Tony Plott. “Cartersville has great size and athleticism, we knew they were going to be tough, but we are still working on us. The kids are still playing hard. We will get better.” Woodland’s offensive highlights included pass connections from Jarvis James to Brandon Allen and Grant Robinson to James as the Wildcats utilize a two-quarterback rotation. Both teams utilized their younger players in the fourth quarter. Woodland will open the 2015 season at Adairsville on Thursday, August 27 with a 7:30pm kickoff. Cartersville opens the following night (Aug. 28) at Cass. That will also be a 7:30pm start. Sidnee Johnson led a potent Adairsville Tigers’ offensive attack to a 21-7 scrimmage victory over Cass Friday night at Adairsville. Johnson (photo left) scored on a 25-yard run on the Tigers’ first possession just five minutes into the game. C.J. Jackson added the PAT that gave Adairsville a 7-0 lead. Junior quarterback Roger Redd, (photo right) in his first high school football appearance at any level, gave Tigers’ head coach Eric Bishop a solid performance also. Cass senior running back James Darns (photo below) dashed 40 yards on the initial play of the second quarter and sophomore Anthony Robledo knotted the score at 7-7 with a PAT. Adairsville scored twice in the second period, including a Redd to Marquel Lane 48-yard slant pass with just over a minute left in the first half that made it 21-7 with the kick. Cass added a touchdown with the younger kids in the second half that was not part of the recorded score in the scrimmage format. “We had a good first half,” Bishop said. “Our kids played well. We made some mistakes, but avoided having penalties. We’ll get a good look at everyone now in film sessions and get to work on those adjustments at practice.” “Adairsville’s got a good team and they’ve got something special with Johnson,” said Cass head coach Bobby Hughes. Hughes was also encouraged by his own team’s efforts. “We played really hard. The offense played well and we rushed it pretty well.” said Hughes. “We feel like we left some points on the field with a couple of little mistakes and we had a couple of issues on defense that we’ll get corrected. Overall, we got good effort and we’ll get back after it on Monday.” Adairsville opens the official regular season Friday at Ridgeland. All four local high school football teams will have an opportunity to perform under the Friday night lights in preseason scrimmages Friday, August 14. Cartersville will play at Woodland and Cass will travel to Adairsville for controlled scrimmages. Both games will kickoff at 7:30pm. Normal game admission will be charged. The formats for both scrimmages will be almost identical. The varsity starters for each team are expected to see most of the playing time in the first half to three quarters and the younger junior varsity and freshmen players will be on the field in the latter stages. Each of the four local coaches have noted the importance of getting their teams in game-type situations and getting their performances on video tape. Adairsville will open their 2015 regular season next Friday (August 21) at Ridgeland and then return home the following Thursday (August 27) to host Woodland. Cartersville and Cass open the 2015 campaign at Cass on Friday, August 28. Kickoff for all four teams' regular season openers will be 7:30pm. Bartow Sports Zone and AM1270 WYXC will broadcast 13 regular season games this Fall, and will cover each of the season openers for the local teams. Pregame coverage will always begin a 7:05pm.

Cartersville had the most players of any Class 4A school selected to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Preseason All-State team. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence, senior tight end Miller Forristall, senior wide receiver Terrius Callahan and senior linebacker Tyler Reed were all selected to the Class AAAA squad. Also of note, Gilmer running back Russell Cochran and Southeast Whitfield offensive lineman Noah Ramsey also made the team. Both of those players are also in Region 7-AAAA. Lawrence and Reed were each named to the AJC and Associated Press all-state first teams in 2014. Callahan was a first-team AP all-state selection and a fourth-team AJC all-state choice in 2014. The four Preseason All-State members and the rest of the Hurricanes travel to Woodland Friday for a preseason scrimmage against the Wildcats. Kickoff for the scrimmage is set for 7:30pm. The Purple Hurricanes open the regular season August 28 at Cass.

Cartersville volleyball head coach Camille Spradley and the Lady Canes begin the 2015 season Friday at the Sequoyah Classic in Hickory Flat. The Cass Lady Colonels opened the 2015 volleyball with a pair of straight set losses to host Model and Darlington Tuesday night (Aug. 11) at Model High School. Cass head coach Alan Potter credited captains Sara Parton and Ashley West with quality play for the Lady Colonels. The junior varsity Lady Colonels had a successful opening night with a pair of straight set victories. Coach Potter noted the play of Macy Wright, Grace Weeks, Lana White, and Madison Philpott in the JV wins. The Lady Colonels return to action Thursday (Aug. 13) at Roswell High School against both the Lady Hornets and the Lady Raiders of Riverwood.
