October 15, 2024 The third-ranked Lady Canes won their GHSA Class 4A first-round match Tuesday night at The Storm Center with a three-set sweep over Centennial. Cartersville won 25-21, 25-13, and 25-9. Sophomore Amara Ejieke led Lady Canes’ attackers with 13 kills. Addison Marisko had six kills, four blocks, and three digs. Riley Huff contributed six kills and two blocks. Addie Rickman added three kills and two blocks. Aubree Barrett and Emma Wall finished with 16 assists and three service aces each. Barrett added nine digs. Wall totaled seven digs. The Knights had their season end with a 6-18 record. Cartersville (30-11) will advance to the second round and host the Midtown Knights (29-9) on Saturday. Midtown defeated Starr’s Mill in four sets on Tuesday in their opening-round match. The Knights were runner-up in Region 4-4A.

October 12, 2024 On Saturday afternoon at The Storm Center, the Cartersville High volleyball team emerged victorious in the Region 7-AAAA Championship tournament, defeating Allatoona in five sets in the championship match. The Lady Buccaneers, who dispatched Dalton in the semifinals Saturday morning (25-19, 25-18), won the first two sets with Cartersville 25-23 and 25-17. The Lady Canes then rallied to win the final three sets 25-23, 25-21, and 15-9. Amara Ejieke had 14 kills, three digs, and one block for Cartersville. Riley Huff had nine kills, five blocks, and one dig. Addison Marisko finished with eight kills, six blocks, and two aces. Holly Dufrene contributed four blocks. Mckenzie Wilkie produced four aces, 32 digs, six assists, and 41 service receptions. Emma Wall had four aces, eight digs, and 15 assists. Aubree Barrett added 17 digs and 22 assists. Cartersville will host the first round of the Class 4A state tournament on Tuesday and will play Centennial, the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAA.

October 12, 2024 Savannah’s Doug Hanzel fired a six-under-par 66 on Saturday at Cartersville Country Club to win the individual title at the 2024 International Senior Invitational presented by Golfweek Magazine. Hanzel’s 54-hole total of 206 (70-70-66, 10-under) edged Kevin VandenBerg (Pulaski, NY) by one shot while Jack Hall (Savannah) and Tony Wise (Georgetown, KY) tied for third at 208. VandenBerg (69-68-70), the top-ranked player in Golfweek’s National Senior Amateur rankings, was the co-leader with Wise (69-68-71) entering the final round. Hanzel, who won the 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur, was joined in the elite field by two other former U.S. Senior Amateur champions — Bob Royak (2019) and Rusty Strawn (2022). Georgia-North won the three-man team competition by two strokes over Team Kentucky, with Georgia-Atlanta placing third. The two low rounds each day for each three-man team counted toward the team championship on the par-72, 6,855-yard CCC layout. Team Georgia-North comprised Hanzel, Royak (71-69-69), and Robert Sheats (76-73-68). Team Kentucky included Buddy Bryant (68-68-73), Scott Ray (70-78-78), and Tony Wise (71-68-69). Representing Team Georgia-Atlanta were Jack Hall (75-66-67), Mike Combs (75-75-72), and Billy Mitchell (72-69-68). The 2024 tournament field included 28 teams and 84 individuals from across the United States, Ireland, and Scotland. Chad Branton of Cartersville, coming off last week’s victory at the Golden Isles Senior Invitational at Brunswick Country Club, carded rounds of 72-73-71 to finish even par and tie for 14th place. Other Georgians in the field included Rusty Strawn (T17), Greg Kennedy (T33), Chris Hall (T38), Mike Heffner (T47), Michael Standard (T56), Charles Wilson (T60), Allen Peake (T62), Coleman Tidwell (T62), Dave Coleman (64th), Scott Davenport (T72), Kyle Harper (78th), Mike Prewett (79th), and Keith Holmes (81st). October 13, 2024 The softball teams at Cartersville and Cass will begin the Class 4A state playoffs on Wednesday, and the Georgia High School Association has set the tournament pairings. The Lady Canes (22-5) finished second in the region and will host Westminster (10-12) in a best-of-three opening-round series.  The Lady Colonels (17-9) finished third in the region and will play at Kell (21-5) in their best-of-three first-round series. Each series will play a doubleheader on Wednesday; if a third game is needed, the rubber game will be played on Thursday.  Cartersville’s doubleheader on Wednesday is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The Cass start time will be updated here when it becomes available. The Cartersville/Westminster series winner will play the Jackson-Atlanta/Northside-Columbus survivor in the second round. The Cass/Kell winner will play the winner of the first-round series between Griffin and Pace Academy.  The second round will be played on October 22 and 23.

October 12, 2024 The Cartersville boys placed fourth of 17 teams, and the Lady Canes placed seventh of 16 teams Friday at the Pickens & Grinnin’ Cross Country Invitational, held at Roper Park in Jasper. The Canes finished behind Oconee County, Chattahoochee, and South Forsyth. Northview won the girls’ race. Scoring runners for the Cartersville boys were Will Feuerbach (6th, 16:33), Barrett Stepp (13th, 16:44), Kaleb Lanier (27th, 17:11), Ethan Empie (33rd, 17:23), and Hayden Mitchell (35th, 17:25). Top finishers for the Lady Canes were Sofia Burns (5th, 19:06), Kylie Ham (35th, 21:29), Jordan Hathaway (71st, 22:45), Hadley Finnemore (77th, 22:57), and Samantha Stepp (84th, 23:08) The Adairsville girls and boys did not field full teams for scoring, but Johnathan Ringwell (12th, 18:13) and Aaron Souders (82nd, 20:45) had the best runs for the Tigers. Fernanda Singer (48th, 24:30) represented the Lady Tigers. WOODLAND XC COMPETES AT FAST BREAK CHALLENGE On Tuesday, October 8, the Woodland cross country teams competed at the Ringgold Fast Break Challenge, which was hosted by Heritage-Catoosa High School. The Wildcats placed fifth of 28 teams.  The boys’ race included 190 runners. The Lady Cats finished seventh of 22 teams. The girls’ race included 155 competitors. Top runners for the Woodland boys were Juan Mendoza (4th, 16:58), Will Parker (24th, 18:09), James Morris (33rd, 18:28), Gabe Hardin (41st, 19:01), and Logan Marr (72nd, 19:45). Allison Snead finished 7th overall in 21:30 to lead the Lady Cats. She was followed by teammates Miranda Pelow (20th, 22:24), Addison Brown (34th, 23:41), Abby George (65th, 25:39), and Sophia St. James (83rd, 27:01). Adairsville will host Cass, Excel, and six other schools on Thursday for the Adairsville Invitational. On Saturday, Cartersville is scheduled to run in the Randolph Invitational in Huntsville, Alabama. Woodland travels to Whitesburg for the Coach Wood Invitational on Saturday.

October 12, 2024 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The second-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes scored on every first-half possession and sailed past the host Allatoona Buccaneers Friday night in Acworth, 31-0. The Canes’ defense also performed spectacularly, yielding just 92 total yards (85 rushing, seven passing). With their victory, the Canes stay unbeaten on the season and in region play. Cartersville remains on a collision course with Cedartown this Friday for the Region 7-4A lead. The Bulldogs (8-0, 4-0) will host Cartersville at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricanes led the Buccaneers 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. Quarterback Nate Russell connected on a 13-yard scoring throw to Cole Crawford on the Canes’ initial possession. The first of four PATs by Ramsey Rowell gave Cartersville a 7-0 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter. Tyon Coe, who also had key runs in the opening drive, raced for a 28-yard touchdown run on the next possession for a 14-0 advantage with 1:45 left in the quarter. Rowell’s 34-yard field goal with 7:30 left in the first half gave the Canes a 17-0 lead, and a pair of touchdown catches by Brady Marchese built a 31-0 margin by halftime. The first reception by Marchese was a 25-yarder from quarterback Andrew Purdy with 5:21 remaining in the second quarter. Allatoona responded with a drive just inside Cartersville territory late in the half, but James Echols made a diving interception of a long Bucs’ pass at the 3-yard line to end the threat.  Cartersville went to their two-minute offense and promptly drove 97 yards for their final score before the half. This time, Russell connected with Marchese for a 66-yard touchdown with 1:06 remaining before the intermission. Following a scoreless third quarter, the game went to a running clock in the final period. In the fourth quarter against Cartersville defensive reserves, Allatoona drove to the Canes’ 26-yard line but missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Russell (6-for-8) completed 75 percent of his passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Purdy was 4-for-6 for 62 yards and one score. Harris Turner entered late to complete all three of his passes for 22 yards. Marchese finished with three catches for 104 receiving yards and two scores. Jamauri Brice had three receptions for 79 yards, including a 49-yarder. Baylon Long rushed six times for 55 yards, including a long run of 23 yards. The loss dropped Allatoona to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-4A. The Bucs visit Hiram on Friday and will host Cass to close the regular season on October 25. October 12, 2024 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Hiram Hornets built a 28-0 lead in the first quarter Friday night and completed a 49-0 Region 7-4A win at Woodland. Hiram scored four rushing touchdowns in the game, threw one long touchdown pass, and scored with a pick-six interception. Woodland’s opening possession drive was promising and included a 32-yard run by Soloman James. The drive stalled, however, at the Hornets’ 36-yard line, and the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs when a pass on a fake punt fell incomplete. Hiram struck for a touchdown on their first offensive play. A 66-yard pass play from Ethan Latimore to Dino Loyd gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 6:14 remaining in the opening quarter. The visitors added to their lead on their next five possessions. After taking over in plus-territory, the Hornets cashed in with a 12-yard touchdown run by Loyd and held a 14-0 lead with 4:04 left in the first period. Amari Lindley scored on an eight-yard rushing play with 3:12 left in the quarter, and Loyd added a three-yard touchdown run with 0:15 remaining in the first for a 28-0 lead. A five-yard touchdown run by Deshaun Williams with 8:10 remaining in the second quarter put Hiram up 35-0, and Loyd added another score on a 34-yard scamper with 3:40 remaining in the half to give the Hornets a 42-0 lead at the intermission. The Hornets accumulated just under 200 rushing yards in the first half. The second half was played with a running clock, and the Wildcats’ defense kept the Hiram offense off the scoreboard. The only second-half points came on a 27-yard pick-six by Hiram’s Gavin Dixon with 8:45 left in the game. Hiram improved to 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in Region 7-4A. The Hornets host Allatoona on Friday and will complete regular season play at Cartersville on October 25. Woodland (1-6, 0-4) steps out of region play on Friday and travels to Southeast Whitfield before closing the season with Region 7-4A games at Cedartown and Dalton on October 25 and November 1.

October 12, 2024 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Adairsville Tigers led 27-0 by halftime and cruised to a 34-7 Homecoming win Friday night over the visiting Ridgeland Panthers. The Tigers’ defense kept the Panthers bottled up most of the night while quarterback Ethan Long threw for three touchdowns, including two to Xavious Nalls. Jamarian Pullum opened the Adairsville scoring with a one-yard touchdown plunge on the Tigers’ first possession. The scoring run capped a 60-yard drive that took six plays. A two-point conversion pass attempt failed, but Adairsville held a 6-0 lead with 8:11 remaining in the first quarter. Following a Ridgeland three-and-out, Adairsville scored again. A Tigers’ 67-yard drive took only three plays and culminated with a Tre Winters quick slant pass reception that he raced 38 yards to the end zone with 4:11 left in the opening quarter. Cooper Souders added the PAT kick to give Adairsville a 13-0 advantage. The two teams traded possessions until late in the second quarter when Adairsville struck for two more scores in the final 3-½ minutes of the first half. Ezequiel Carter cashed in a lengthy drive by the Tigers with a five-yard touchdown run. The scoring march took 12 plays and covered 60 yards to put Adairsville ahead 20-0 with 3:26 left in the second quarter. To end the first half, Adairsville drove 62 yards on six plays. Long connected with Nalls for a 35-yard touchdown play with 0:56 remaining in the half. Souders’ third extra point gave the Tigers a 27-0 lead at the intermission. Adairsville returned the second-half kickoff to the Ridgeland 48-yard line to set up their final scoring drive of the night. Carter had two nice runs of 11 yards and 17 yards in the possession, ending with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Long to Nalls. The seven-play drive and Souders’ kick put the Tigers up 34-0 with 8:43 left in the third quarter. Ridgeland mounted its only scoring drive late during a running fourth-quarter clock. The Panthers drove 81 yards in 12 plays to get on the scoreboard with 2:30 left to play. Bryson Donald capped the march with an 8-yard touchdown run, making the final score 34-7. Long was 13-for-16 passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Nalls finished with five catches for 131 yards and two scores. Winters had four receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown. Carter, a freshman back, led the Tigers’ rushing attack with 62 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown.  The Adairsville defense limited the Panthers to only 106 total yards (71 rushing). Ethan Brown had 13 tackles for the Tigers, including three for loss. Colton Sanford contributed six tackles, including one sack, while Righley Worthington and Winters added five tackles each. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 1-7 on the season and 1-3 in Region 7-AAA. October 11, 2024 The Cartersville Lady Canes volleyball team has reached the championship round of the Region 7-4A Tournament and will face the Allatoona/Dalton winner in the finals on Saturday at noon. Cartersville is hosting the region tournament. Allatoona will play Dalton at 10 a.m. on Saturday at The Storm Center. On Thursday, Cartersville defeated Dalton 25-12 and 25-22 to advance to the championship match.

October 10, 2024 The Lady Colonels rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday evening to walk off with a 6-5 non-region home win over Adairsville. Emma Gibson (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H) picked up the pitching win for Cass in relief of Lily Powell  (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB) and Bailey York (3 IP, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K). Ashlyn Carlton (6.1 IP, 6R, 5ER, 11H, 2BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for the Tigers. Sydney Satterfield had three hits for Cass, including two doubles. Chloe Hill had two doubles and two RBI. Braelyn Franklin (triple, RBI) also had two hits for the Lady Colonels. Alivia Joslin (RBI), Ansley Powell (RBI), and Ashlynn Durden led the Adairsville offense with two hits. Adairsville completes the season with a 15-14 mark. Cass (17-9) will begin the Class 4A state playoffs on the road. Their playoff opponent will be determined later this weekend. CARTERSVILLE 9, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 0 Presley Crabbe rang up ten strikeouts Thursday evening while tossing a five-inning no-hitter as Cartersville won at Southeast Whitfield, 9-0. Kennedy Crenshaw had two hits for Cartersville. Zoie Shiflett (home run, three RBI), Kinsey Woodard (double, RBI), Allana Williams (RBI), Addi Burns (RBI), Jordan Bishop, LaKaiya Banks (triple), Reese Dumas (double), and Taryn Bradley added one hit. Southeast Whitfield completed the season with a 2-25 mark. The Lady Raiders were 1-20 in Region 7-4A. Cartersville completed the regular season with a 22-5 record. The Lady Canes were 19-2 in Region 7-4A and will host a Class 4A state playoff first-round series (opponent, TBA) as a No. 2 seed.

October 8, 2024 Cartersville’s Zoie Shiflett went 3-for-3 at the plate and tossed a seven-inning complete game Tuesday evening to lead the Lady Canes in an 8-3 home region win over Cedartown. Shiflett’s three hits included a home run and two singles. Her efforts in the pitching circle included seven strikeouts with no walks. She allowed three earned runs on six hits. Cedartown opened the top of the first inning with three runs on four consecutive hits, but Shiflett settled in to shut out the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the way. Her two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning knotted the score at 3-all. From there, the seventh-ranked Lady Canes added three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. Layne Callan (double, two RBI), Kinsey Woodard, and Lakaiya Banks (RBI) had two hits for Cartersville. Jordan Bishop (triple), Kennedy Crenshaw (sac fly, RBI), Reese Dumas, and Addi Burns added one hit. The loss dropped Cedartown to 16-12 overall and finished 11-10 in Region 7-4A. Cartersville (21-5, 18-2), a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Class 4A state playoffs, completes the regular season on Thursday at Southeast Whitfield. CASS 6, DALTON 5 The Lady Colonels built a 6-2 lead through five innings and held off visiting Dalton for a 6-5 region victory Tuesday night. Chloe Hill hit a solo home run and had an RBI triple to help pace the Cass offense. Braelyn Franklin (double, two RBI), Darianna Sosa (double), and Molli Morrow also had two hits. Payton Mize (double, RBI), Sydney Satterfield (RBI), and Cayce Brown added one hit. Kylie Gentry (7 IP, 5R, 1ER, 7H, 3BB, 15) struck out 15 to earn the pitching victory. The season closes for Dalton with a 7-16 overall record. The Catamounts finished 7-14 in region play. Cass (16-9, 14-7) will be the No. 3 seed from Region 7-4A in the state playoffs. The Lady Colonels complete regular season play at home Thursday against Adairsville at 5:55 p.m. ALLATOONA 4, WOODLAND 3 The Woodland Lady Cats wrapped up their 2024 campaign Tuesday evening at fifth-ranked Allatoona with a 4-3 loss. Kamryn Smith (6 IP, 4ER, 7H, 2BB, 4K) suffered the tough-luck pitching loss for Woodland. She also paced the Lady Cats at the plate with two hits.  Jordan Hammonds, Alana Carnes (RBI), Mackenzie Araya, Lanie Calhoun, and Bailey Ryan added one hit for Woodland. Allatoona improved to 20-2 on the season and finished 20-1 in Region 7-4A. Woodland’s season ends with a 7-15 overall record. The Lady Cats finished 7-14 in region play.
