Friday's high school baseball roundup: Tigers and Canes complete region sweeps

The Adairsville Tigers and the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes each finished three-game region sweeps against Ridgeland and Hiram, respectively, on Friday night. Meanwhile, Cass lost the last two games of their series with Cedartown, and Dalton achieved a three-game sweep over Woodland.



ADAIRSVILLE 12, RIDGELAND 1


The Tigers scored 12 runs in only four offensive frames on Friday night and completed a region series sweep of the visiting Ridgeland Panthers with a 12-1 victory.


Adairsville pitchers Kaden Coker (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 3K) and Westin Barfield (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) limited Ridgeland to only two hits and did not allow an earned run.


Tyler Parker had a three-hit performance and drove in a run. Harrison Cole (double, four RBI) and Hudson Parr (RBI) produced two hits. Evan Hardin (two RBI), McCayden Hufstetler (RBI), Braden Slocumb, Hayden Miller (double), and Coker each added one hit. 


The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-9 overall and 0-6 in Region 7-AAA.


Adairsville (15-4, 7-2) begins a three-game region series with Heritage-Catoosa on Tuesday in a 5:30 p.m. home game. The battle for second place in the region standings will continue on Thursday at the Generals’ home field and return to Adairsville on Friday.



CARTERSVILLE 10, HIRAM 0

CARTERSVILLE 20, HIRAM 0


The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes finished a three-game sweep of the Hiram Hornets on Friday by winning both games of a doubleheader, 10-0 and 20-0.


Combined with Thursday’s 10-0 victory, Cartersville outscored Hiram 40-0 in the three-game set and needed only 13 innings for the three victories. 


Pitchers Nolan Elrod (4 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 7K) and Brayden Channell (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K) blanked the Hornets in Friday’s first game. Logan Buchanan (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) and Wyatt Earwood (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) took care of the pitching duties in the final game of the series.


Elrod homered twice, had three hits, a sacrifice fly, and five RBI for the Hurricanes’ offense in the doubleheader. Cole Crawford (home run, three RBI) and Brayden Logan (RBI) each produced two hits on the night. Cooper Reynolds (double, sacrifice fly, four RBI), Clint Hosea (triple, two RBI), Harris Turner (sacrifice fly, two RBI), Gianni Gandy (double, two RBI), David Vargas (RBI), James Manring (double), Tyler Hickman, Asa Mitcham, and Ben Cagle all had one hit. Parker Lively and Brant Rutledge added one RBI.


The losses left Hiram with a 7-10 overall record and a 2-7 mark in Region 7-AAAA.


Cartersville (11-7, 9-0) begins a three-game series with the Woodland Wildcats on Tuesday at Woodland at 5:30 p.m. The Canes will host a Friday doubleheader at 5 p.m.



CEDARTOWN 4, CASS 3

CEDARTOWN 13, CASS 1


The Cass Colonels lost both games of a home doubleheader on Friday night, falling to the Cedartown Bulldogs 4-3 in eight innings and 13-1.


In Friday’s first game, the Colonels pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game, but the Bulldogs plated the game-winning run in the top of the eighth. An RBI single by Anthony Williams plated Everett Perkins following a walk and an infield error by Cass.


Cedartown dominated the second game with 13 runs on 17 hits while the Colonels committed five defensive miscues.


Dustin Wallin (7.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 8H, 2BB, 4K) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Cass in Friday’s first game. Easton Lee (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) finished off the eighth inning for the Colonels. 


Lee (3 IP, 7R, 5ER, 8H, 0BB, 3K) started the second game on Friday and was tagged with the loss. Andrew Ray (4 IP, 6R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K) worked the final four frames on the mound.


Cass had eleven hits in the doubleheader. Kasey Jacobs totaled four hits. Dustin Wallin finished with three hits, including one double and one RBI. Maddox Koontz contributed two hits and one RBI. Zach Stiles (triple) and Aidan Castaneda each had one hit. Cooper Rampley contributed one RBI.


Cedartown improved to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in Region 7-AAAA.


Cass (4-14, 1-8) has a three-game region series with Southeast Whitfield next week that begins with a home game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Raiders will host the Colonels for a doubleheader on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.



DALTON 4, WOODLAND 1

DALTON 10, WOODLAND 5


The visiting Dalton Catamounts won both games of a doubleheader at Woodland Friday night, taking the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 10-5. The two wins on Friday completed a three-game series sweep.


Dalton starting pitcher Charles Chappelle controlled the Wildcats in Friday’s first game. He scattered six hits and three walks in a seven-inning complete game performance. Chappelle recorded eight strikeouts.


Woodland led 3-2 through four innings in Friday’s second game, but the Catamounts scored eight runs over their final three offensive frames to take the lead and pull away down the stretch, even though the Wildcasts outhit the Catamounts fourteen to eight.


Grant Tidwell (6.2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 5H, 3BB, 9K) started the first game for Woodland on Friday and worked into the seventh inning, but was saddled with the pitching loss despite a strong effort. Brylon Reynolds recorded the final out of the first game with a strikeout.


Four pitchers toed the rubber for Woodland in the nightcap. Zaylen Cochran (4.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 7K) made the start and suffered the loss. Logan Smith (1.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K), Cameron O’Shields (0.1 IP, 1BB), and Reynolds (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB) also pitched for the Wildcats.


Outfielder Preston Sorrells paced the Wildcats’ offense in the doubleheader with five hits that included one triple, one double, and one RBI. Jacob Tatum followed with three hits, including one double. Grant Tidwell (two doubles, sacrifice fly, three RBI), Tucker James (RBI), Clayton Wilkes, Sammy Ray, and Logan Smith finished the night with two hits. Tommy Risner and Alfredo Romo added one hit apiece.


Dalton improved to 13-3 overall and 9-0 in Region 7-AAAA.


Woodland (8-9, 3-6) hosts Cartersville on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to begin a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at Cartersville starting at 5 p.m.
