Lady Canes fall to Bucs in region-leader showdown; Adairsville and Cass pick up region wins

Both teams received strong pitching performances and solid defense Tuesday night, but Allatoona scored the game’s only run in the top of the fourth to edge host Cartersville 1-0.
The showdown was the rubber game in the season series between the leaders in the Region 7-4A standings. The Lady Canes won the first of three games 12-3 in mid-August, and the Buccaneers won 5-4 in early September.
Allatoona strung together a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-out RBI single in the fourth for the game-winning run.
Addi Burns had Cartersville’s only hit off Lady Bucs’ pitcher Aubrey Moore in the bottom of the fifth. Moore struck out six and issued three walks. She also hit one batter.
Zoie Shiflett allowed just three hits and two walks for Cartersville in the loss. She fanned three.
With their eleventh consecutive win, eighth-ranked Allatoona improved to 18-2 overall and 18-1 in Region 7-4A.
Cartersville (20-5, 17-2), ranked No. 4, hosts Cedartown next Tuesday.
ADAIRSVILLE 6, NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 2
The Lady Tigers got a strong pitching performance from Ashlyn Carlton Tuesday night at Northwest Whitfield for a 6-2 Region 7-AAA victory in Tunnel Hill.
Carlton, who produced two hits and two RBI offensively, yielded only one earned run on four hits and one walk in the pitching circle. She struck out five.
Ansley Powell also had two hits with one RBI for Adairsville. Ashlynn Durden (two RBI), Maddie Baggett, and Taylor Evans added one hit. Riley Mounger contributed one RBI.
The loss dropped the Bruins to 8-20 overall and 6-11 in region play.
Adairsville (13-12, 5-11) hosts Heritage on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Northwest Whitfield on Thursday at 5 p.m.
CASS 5, CEDARTOWN 4
The Lady Colonels won the rubber game of their season, three-game series with Cedartown Tuesday night to earn the No. 3-seed from Region 7-4A when the state playoffs begin October 14.
Cass had already locked up a state playoff berth but secured the No. 3 seed on Tuesday.
The Lady Colonels traded leads with the Lady Bulldogs in the early frames but took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning. They added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to hold off Cedartown down the stretch.
Kylie Gentry went the distance in the circle to collect the pitching victory for the Lady Colonels. She scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Chloe Hill produced three hits and one RBI for the Cass offense. Darianna Sosa doubled and hit a solo home run in the third inning. Sydney Satterfield (RBI), Molli Morrow, Harlee Thomason, and KK Evans contributed one hit. Payton Mize added one RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The loss dropped Cedartown to 16-9 overall and 11-8 in region play.
Cass (15-8, 13-6) hosts Allatoona on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
HIRAM 9, WOODLAND 8
Hiram scored six runs across the final three innings, including a walk-off home run by Marlee Greathouse in the bottom of the seventh to beat visiting Woodland on Tuesday evening, 9-8.
The late runs by the Hornets spoiled an earlier 7-0 lead for Woodland and an 8-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Alana Carnes had three hits for the Lady Cats, including a double and one RBI. Ashlyn Baines followed with two hits, including a double and one RBI. Bitsy Hartsfield hit a two-run home run in the first inning and finished with three RBI. Jordan Hammonds, Kamryn Smith (RBI), Mackenzie Araya, and Bailey Ryan added one hit for Woodland.
Evelyn Tucker (6 IP, 9ER, 14H, 2BB, 3K) pitched for the Lady Wildcats.
Hiram improved to 5-17 overall and 3-16 in Region 7-4A.
Woodland (6-14, 6-13) hosts Southeast Whitfield on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
