The Adairsville boys dropped a 64-47 decision Saturday evening to Class 4A 8th-ranked Central-Carroll in a game played at Darlington as part of the Kyle Sandy Invitational. Khaven Cochran led the Lions with 20 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Max Young scored 13 points. Gabe Gomez made seven threes and finished with 23 points for the Tigers. The Cartersville Lady Canes dropped a 73-51 non-region decision at Harrison on Thursday night. The Class 7A Lady Hoyas led 44-23 at halftime and improved to a 4-1 record. November 25, 2023 The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Coffee Trojans will go head-to-head next week at Weinman Stadium following their state quarterfinal wins on Friday night. The Canes cruised to a 35-0 home win over Jenkins of Savannah while the host Trojans shut out Cass in Douglas. CARTERSVILLE 35, JENKINS 0 ~~ Kevin Pate / WBHF Sports contributed to this report. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes reached the Final Four of the Class 5A GHSA football playoffs on Friday night, securing a 35-0 victory over the visiting Jenkins Warriors. Cartersville started the scoring on its opening possession. The Canes marched 65 yards to the end zone with Khristian Lando finishing off the drive with a touchdown run. In the early moments of the second quarter, Lando culminated another Cartersville drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge. Then late in the second quarter, Andrew Purdy contributed a 43-yard touchdown run, building the Canes a 21-0 lead at halftime. The Cartersville defense performed admirably throughout forcing Jenkins to punt on every first-half possession. In contrast, the Cartersville offense effectively ran the football from the beginning. Richard Houston added a 1-yard scoring run and Nate Russell connected with Kendrick Price for a 30-yard touchdown strike. Those two touchdowns, along with the Ryan Johnson PAT kicks, extended the Hurricanes’ advantage to 35-0 and completed the scoring. With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Cartersville comfortably advanced to the state semifinals. The Canes will host the top-ranked Coffee Trojans next Friday night at Weinman Stadium. COFFEE 30, CASS 0 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cass Colonels had their 2023 playoff run come to a close on the road Friday night with a 30-0 loss at top-ranked Coffee. The Trojans’ defense, which has not allowed more than 14 points in a game all season, earned its sixth shutout with a “bend-but-don’t break” effort.  The Colonels had some offensive success between the 20s, but Coffee kept Cass off the scoreboard for the night. A frustrating night for the Cass offense saw the Colonels drive into plus territory (across the 50-yard line) on five of eight possessions. Of those five drives, Cass reached inside the Coffee 35-yard line four times with two drives reaching the red zone. Yet the Colonels were shut out for the first time since their season-opener at Rome in the Corky Kell Classic. Coffee star runningback Fred Brown (the state's leading rusher in Class 5A, now at 2,099 yards) collected the bulk of the Trojans’ yardage with multiple power runs. He added an occasional chunk play including a 51-yard rumble late in the third quarter and finished with 173 yards and a touchdown. Each time the Trojans scored, Brown yielded the touchdown run to teammate Tyrese Hansley who scored three times on runs of 2-, 3-, and 13 yards. A Cass defensive stop on a 4th-and-goal play at the 1-yard line ultimately turned into the first points of the night for the Trojans. On the Colonels’ first down, a direct snap play to Devin Henderson from their own 1-yard line, the Cass senior was tackled before he could escape his own end zone and the safety gave Coffee a 2-0 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter. Following the ensuing free kick by Cass, the Trojans started with a short field at the Cass 38-yard line. Coffee struck quickly with quarterback Maurice Hansley connecting with Pat McCall for a 32-yard touchdown that gave Coffee a 9-0 lead with 4:26 left in the first period. Cass stormed back down the field with their next possession but a Brodie McWhorter pass was picked off by Coffee’s Tyno Edwards inside the 10-yard line. His electric interception return to the Cass 9-yard line set up the Trojans’ next score. Three plays later, Tyrese Hansley punched in a 2-yard run for a 16-0 Coffee lead. The two teams traded possessions for the remainder of the half giving the Trojans a two-score lead at the intermission. In the second half, the Colonels were again able to move the ball between the 20-yard lines, but were repeatedly stopped once they neared scoring position. Meanwhile, the Trojans leaned heavily on their rushing attack led by Brown, the state’s leading rusher in Class 5A. He was occasionally relieved by Hansley including a pair of touchdown runs with 4:10 and 0:16 left in the third quarter. With Coffee up 30-0 to begin the fourth quarter, the game became a “running clock” for the fourth quarter. Cass had one final long drive in the fourth quarter that included a fake punt and pass from McWhorter to Sacovie White, but turned the ball over on downs in the final minute inside the red zone. Coffee remained unbeaten on the season at 13-0 and will make the trip to Weinman Stadium next Friday to take on the Cartersville Hurricanes (13-0) in the state semifinals. Cass had its season come to an end with a 7-6 mark and its first return trip to the state quarterfinals in 40 years.

The Adairsville boys basketball team fell in double overtime Wednesday evening at the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic in Rossville. East Hamilton (TN) made a free throw with 1.1 remaining in the second overtime to score the deciding point in a 64-63 win. The Tigers, who trailed 22-16, 35-29, and 43-35 at the end of the first three periods, rallied in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.  After the teams matched scoring in the first extra session, the teams battled in a second four-minute overtime period. Ashton Munson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Hurricanes. Adairsville was led by Tay Jackson who scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help force the overtime. Ben Abernathy contributed 13 points and Zach Postell had 12 for the Tigers. East Hamilton improved to 1-3 on the season. Adairsville (0-2) will host Woodland on Tuesday, November 28 at 7:30 p.m.

November 21, 2023 Tuesday’s local high school basketball results: CASS GIRLS 42, EAST PAULDING 25 The Cass girls' basketball team won at East Paulding Tuesday night, 42-25. Zion Hayes led the Lady Colonels with 14 points. Olivia Woods followed with 10. Kiana McDaniel and Kaitlyn Godwin added six each. Cass led 17-16 at halftime but pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Lady Raiders 25-9 over the final 16 minutes. East Paulding falls to 0-2 on the season. Cass (2-0) hosts Rome next Tuesday, November 28 with the tip at 6 p.m. WOODLAND GIRLS 45, DARLINGTON 39 Gracie Shipp led the way with 15 points including nine in the fourth quarter to help lead the Lady Cats to a 45-39 win over Darlington at the Adairsville Thanksgiving Classic. Reagan Weightman added 10 points for Woodland. Darlington led 25-22 at halftime and 29-27 after three quarters before the Lady Cats won the final eight minutes, 18-10. Caroline Jordan led Darlington (1-3) with 15 points. Woodland (2-1) plays at Adairsville next Tuesday, November 28 at 6 p.m. EAST PAULDING 74, CASS BOYS 70 Cameron Jackson scored 16 points and Nate Simmons added 15 as East Paulding outlasted the Cass boys on Tuesday night, 74-70. East Paulding improved to 1-1 on the season. Jayden Foster paced Cass with 25 points. Jeremy Dent followed with 19 and Dylan Miller scored 13 for the Colonels. DALTON 70, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 29 The Lady Catamounts defeated the Lady Tigers 70-29 Tuesday night at the Adairsville Thanksgiving Classic. Dalton led 25-16 after one quarter; 36-21 at halftime; and 51-27 after three quarters. Grace Ridley led Dalton with 15 points. Alissa Winters scored 11 to lead the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (1-2) hosts Woodland next Tuesday, November 28 at 6 p.m. SIGNAL MOUNTAIN (TN) 78, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 63 The Adairsville Tigers dropped a 78-63 decision Tuesday night to Signal Mountain (Tennessee) in the opening round of the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Classic in Rossville. The Tigers led 16-10 after one quarter but fell behind in the second quarter and did not catch up. The Eagles took a 37-30 lead by halftime and maintained a 58-51 advantage through three quarters. Tre Winters scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Tigers. Tay Jackson followed with 17 points and Xavious Nalls added nine for Adairsville. Signal Mountain (3-1) was led by Andrew Matukewicz with 25 points. Josh Thompson and Chris Kennedy posted 17 and 15 points, respectively. Adairsville (0-1) returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against East Hamilton (Tennessee) at the Ridgeland Classic. GORDON CENTRAL 82, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 52 Monday at the Gordon Central Thanksgiving Tournament. The loss dropped ECA to 0-3 on the season. EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 56, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 41 The Eagles picked up their first win of the season Tuesday night at the Gordon Central Thanksgiving Tournament. Excel topped Southeast Whitfield, 56-41. Excel trailed 23-21 at the intermission but outscored the Raiders 35-18 in the second half for a 15-point win. Excel Christian (1-3) plays at Praise Academy next Tuesday, November 28.

November 21, 2023 The Cass wrestling team finished runner-up Tuesday at the Georgia Grappler Invitational hosted by Central-Carroll. The host Lions finished with 186 points to win the 12-team event. Cass was next with 160.5 followed by Mt. Pisgah Christian with 131. Britain's Lucienne Bellissimo, now living in Campobello, S.C., placed second on Tremanton, who was competing in his first 4*-L. The two riders chased each other all weekend for the win, which was decided in the nail-biting stadium jumping round. After Saturday's cross-country, they were 0.2 seconds apart, with Bellissimo holding the lead. The margin didn't change Sunday, but the placings did, as both had time faults, but Bellissimo had .04 more time faults than Caras to finish second with a score of 35.5 to Caras' 35.3. Both Caras and Bellissimo had busy weekends, each with several horses entered. Caras was also fourth in the 4*-L with her up-and-coming horse, Sommersby in only Sommersby's third advanced competition, and Bellissimo won the CCI1*-L division with Duke's Jory. "Because he's such a big boy, at least 17 hands, the doubles, and combinations are hard for Joey (Trendy Fernhill's nickname)," said Caras. "I definitely thought the triple bar, the two verticals and the triple at the end of the course were going to be hard for him. But I know what to expect, so I know how to ride him there and help him as best as I can, and he runs as hard as he can. He gives 125 percent, and to have produced him myself is just extra special." Bellissimo was beaming about Tremanton's performance. "She hadn't yet jumped clear in show jumping at 4*, so today was a real pivotal moment to feel her try that hard in the ring, especially after being such a brave and good girl yesterday on cross-country," she said. Olympian Will Coleman of Gordonsville Va., placed third on Diabolo. Coleman came out strong early in the competition, standing second in dressage on Friday. "Dab," as he calls the horse, was revved up for his stadium course, prancing when he entered the arena and jumping big through the course. "Dab was feeling very fresh," said Coleman. "I think he's excited to be at this amazing facility." Coleman complimented course designer Donovan, saying, "It was a great track, a typical Marc Donovan course. The beginning allowed you to get into a good rhythm and then built in technicality." This was Donovan's first time at TerraNova, which he called a "magnificent facility." He said it allowed him to design the kind of course he felt would be a good test for the horses. "There are some trickier lines," said Donovan. "Some of the bending lines are a little more difficult than I normally am comfortable doing. But I think at this level the horses will be able to handle it. The jumps are beautiful, but they are pretty colorful. The triple combination has a lot of red and white, so at first glance when you come around the turn, there it is, and it's a lot to look at. The line between the liverpool and two verticals is a precise, exacting line, and the horses will have to be on their step." Alyssa Phillips of Fort Worth, Texas, on Cornelius Bo, held her lead from dressage and cross-country to show jumping to win The Estates at TerraNova CCI3*-L with a score of 28.0.

The Woodland boys basketball team picked up its first win of the 2023-24 season Monday night at Armuchee, 61-42. Brelace Williams and Zyon Heath led the Wildcats with 24 and 20 points, respectively. Woodland (1-2) will play at Adairsville on November 28. ARMUCHEE 56, WOODLAND GIRLS 40 Armuchee led 27-13 at halftime and held off the Lady Cats in the second half for a 56-40 home victory Monday night. Chloe Shaw led the Lady Indians with 22 points. Megan Schultz scored 15 points for Woodland. Grace Shipp added 10. Woodland (1-1) plays Darlington on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Adairsville High Thanksgiving Classic.
