MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … notched his fourth pitching win of the season last Tuesday (July 25) with a five-inning home start to beat the Lansing Lugnuts. He scattered six hits, did not issue a walk, and fanned ten of the 18 batters he faced. Barnett’s season record improved to 4-5 with his fifteenth start and it evened his MiLB career record at 5-5. The 22-year-old has now worked 75 innings in 2023 with a 3.24 ERA and 89 strikeouts. Quad Cities was 3-3 in their series with Lansing last week. The River Bandits (12-18 Midwest League second half / 44-52 overall) play a six-game stretch at the Peoria Chiefs Tuesday through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … returned to see action in three games last week after spending just over a month on the injured list. He was 1-for-9 at the plate with a pair of walks and scored four runs in home games against the Bowie Baysox last Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Seigler’s hit was his fifth double of the season Sunday in a 6-5 win. He started twice at catcher and once at DH while the Patriots won five of the six games in last week’s series. The 24-year-old has a .169 batting average this season in 142 official at-bats. He has one homer and 14 RBIs appearing in 44 games. Somerset (16-10, Eastern League second half) travels to Akron for a six-game set with the Rubber Ducks Tuesday through Sunday. The Patriots (58-36 overall) already clinched a playoff berth by winning the East Division’s first-half race and currently lead Portland by ½ game in the second half. JASON BOHN — PGA Champions Tour … the Acworth resident and Cartersville Country Club member of the PGA’s senior tour fired rounds of 75-73 and missed the cut at The Senior Open Championship played at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Bridgend, Wales last Thursday through Sunday. After turning 50 in April, the senior tour rookie has now played in nine senior events and ranks 78th on the Charles Schwab Cup money list. He had top-20 performances in April at the Insperity Invitational and in June at the American Family Insurance Championship.

The 2023 high school softball schedule begins this week so BartowSportsZone.com asked the local head coaches for some insight into the upcoming season. ADAIRSVILLE TIGERS Justin Evans takes over as a first year head coach at the high school level following eight years coaching middle school teams at Red Bud Middle School, Woodland Middle School, and Rome Middle School. He is a graduate of Adairsville High School. Evans also has experience as a girls’ soccer, girls’ basketball, and baseball coach. How many returning starters? Since it is my first season, all of my players have a clean slate. I really cannot tell you who was a starter last season and who wasn't. The last coaching regime platooned many players, so I have a lot of girls who have experience. Total number of girls in your varsity and JV program this year. Is that number up or down? I have a total of 18 girls on the roster. With me coming in and starting the building process of the program, we are only focused on varsity as of now. I am putting much emphasis on our middle school program this season and moving forward because the middle school is going to be vital to feed players into our program. Your top pitcher(s) for the 2023 season and what makes each effective. We have two pitchers that are going to be important for our success this season. The first is senior Chelsea Bates. She throws hard and works hard on the mound. This season will be vital for her to push through some obstacles that she has had in the past and overcome the challenges that will come her way. Our other pitcher is junior Jordan Clay. Clay has a lot of spin and has a lot of confidence on the mound. She is a rock emotionally when on the mound which will be vital when we hit region play. Your top hitters for the 2023 season and their top offensive skills I think our bright spot this season will be our offense. McKenzie Pullam (senior), Chelsea Bates (senior), and Brie Patterson (junior) will be our heavy hitters this season. These girls have a ton of power and really put on a show during batting practice over the summer. Taylor Evans (junior) will be relied on a lot to be aggressive to get on base in front of those hitters. Riley Mounger (junior) will be relied on to do it all. To get on base and swipe some as well. She has the right amount of hitting ability and quickness to be dangerous. Who do you expect to be the best teams in your region this year? Region 6-AAA is a tough region. I think Gordon Lee is the clear-cut favorite in the region. Just look at their history and you'll understand why. I have had the opportunity to play their middle school program over the last 2 seasons and they are going to keep reloading. Bremen will be another tough opponent as well. They have been to Columbus in the last few years and having to make that trip down to Bremen is never an easy one. I have coached teams against Lafayette and LFO in middle school ball over the years, and based on the development of their players, I expect those programs to be stout as well. Meanwhile, another former Canes standout, Anthony Seigler, remains on the injured list with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate Somerset Patriots. The 6-foot right-hander made a six-inning scoreless start scattering just two hits and a pair of walks while facing 21 batters. He struck out three. Now 3-5 for the season in 14 starts and 70 innings pitched, the Royals’ third-round pick has 79 strikeouts and a 3.47 ERA. Quad Cities was 3-3 at Beloit last week and is 9-15 in the second-half standings of the Midwest League’s West Division. The Bandits (41-49 overall) host the Lansing Lugnuts in a six-game series this Tuesday through Sunday to close out the July schedule. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … has been on the Patriots’ Injured List since June 29 and has not seen action in a game since June 25. The switch-hitting catcher and Yankees’ 2018 first-round selection has struggled with injuries during his professional career. He has 133 official at-bats this season with a .173 batting average, one homer, and 16 RBIs. In 774 career MiLB at-bats, he has a .217 batting average with 13 homers and 100 RBIs. Somerset (53-35 overall) won the first-half standings of the Northeast Division in the Eastern League and has secured a playoff berth. The Patriots are 11-9 in the second-half race, 3-½ games behind Portland.

The Cartersville Little League 12U baseball team finished third at the 2023 Georgia Little League state tournament following a 5-3 loss to host Smyrna Little League Wednesday night. Smyrna posted four runs in the first two innings and added an insurance run in the fourth inning. Cartersville narrowed the margin to 4-1 in the third inning and scored two runs in the fifth but got no closer despite outhitting Smyrna seven to five. Parker Huth (3.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) made the pitching start and was tagged with the loss. Noah Leffew (2.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) closed out the final 2-⅓ innings on the mound. Jackson Crawford (RBI) and Tyler Hickman led the Cartersville offense with two hits each. Braxton Lemon had one double. Mattox Stepp and Demetrius Wynn added one hit apiece. Trey Smith and Leffew added one RBI each. Cartersville finished the double-elimination state tournament with a 2-2 record after winning the District 1 championship. Smyrna advances to the state championship round on Thursday against Harris County. Smyrna will need two wins. Harris County needs just one win to take the tournament title.

The Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) baseball team finished third at the Georgia Junior Little League state tournament following an 11-1 loss to Toccoa Little League Tuesday night in Columbus. Bartow 14U finished 2-2 in the state tournament with wins over East Marietta and Peachtree City in earlier elimination games. The locals' other loss was to Peachtree City in the opening round. Nick Robinson went 2-⅓ innings on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss. Kason Miller also pitched, working 3-⅔ innings. Connor Corbin had two hits for the locals. Zaylen Cochran, Landon Farmer, and Miller added one hit apiece. Toccoa will play Athens for the Junior League state championship Wednesday night. Athens needs just one win. Toccoa would need to win twice.

The Cartersville Little League 12U baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2023 State Tournament Tuesday night in Cobb County at the hands of Harris County Little League, 11-1. Harris County built a 4-0 lead before Cartersville scored its only run of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Harris County then added four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth on the way to a 10-run decision. Cartersville managed only two hits — one each by Tyler Hickman and Jackson Crawford. Parker Huth drove in the lone Cartersville run. Brock Crawford (4 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Braxton Lemon (0.2 IP, 4ER, 2H, 1BB), William Groce (0.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K), and B H (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for Cartersville. Cartersville, now 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament, will face the Warner Robins/Smyrna winner (played late Tuesday) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in an elimination game. Harris County, now 3-0, advances to the championship round needing just one more win to take the state title.

The Bartow County Junior Little League baseball team trailed 11-1 through going into the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night. Still, it rallied for eight runs in the fourth inning and six more in the sixth inning to defeat Peachtree City at the Georgia Junior Little League State Tournament in Columbus. The comeback win for Bartow County avenged a first-round loss last Saturday to PCLL. Landon Farmer pitched 3-⅓ innings with one strikeout to gather the pitching victory. Kasey Jacobs worked the other 3-⅔ on the bump. Zaylen Cochran and Jayce Little were both 2-for-4 at the plate for Bartow. Connor Corbin finished 2-for-5 with a double. Hilton Wade, Nick Robinson, and Clayton Wilkes added one hit each in the victory. Bartow 14U, now 2-1 at the state tournament, plays Toccoa Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in an elimination game with the winner advancing to the championship round against Athens. Athens is unbeaten in the state tournament and needs just one more win in the double-elimination event. The Bartow/Toccoa winner will need to beat Athens twice to win the title, The championship round — including the “if game” — is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Armour Road Park in Columbus.

Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) baseball defeated East Marietta 8-7 Sunday afternoon in Columbus to stay alive at the 2023 Georgia Little League Junior state tournament. Bartow, now 1-1 in the double-elimination tournament, advances to a rematch game with Peachtree City Monday at 5 p.m. Peachtree City beat Bartow 11-5 Saturday in the opening round, then lost to Toccoa Sunday afternoon. In the Bartow 14U win on Sunday, Zaylen Cochran was 2-for-4 at the plate and also picked up the pitching win with a pair of strikeouts in two innings on the mound. Clayton Wilkes was also 2-for-4 at the plate. Connor Corbin recorded eight strikeouts and pitched five innings for the locals. Corbin and Nick Robinson were 1-for-3 on offense. Monday’s Bartow/Peachtree City winner will play the Athens/Toccoa loser Tuesday night in another elimination game.

The Cartersville Little League 12U baseball team won its second straight game to begin the 2023 state tournament Sunday in Cobb County and is one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Cartersville Country Club members R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville and Lee Bowman of Marietta made the 36-hole cut at the 102nd Georgia Amateur Championship played this past Thursday through Sunday at Rivermont Golf Club in Johns Creek. University of South Florida’s Jake Peacock of Milton won the championship with rounds of 68-68-71-71—278 (6-under-par). He edged John Daniel Culbreth of Thomasville by one shot and Connor Macmillan of Canton by three. Clyburn tied for 25th place on the 6,955-yard, par-70 layout with rounds of 70-74-72-75— 291. Bowman tied for 47th firing rounds of 71-76-72-79—298. Two other local golfers — Laine Frazier of Adairsville and Chanc Willis of Cartersville — qualified for the 144-player field at the Georgia Amateur but failed to make the 36-hole cut of 8-over-par. The field was narrowed to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes.

A pair of local Little League baseball teams begin state tournament play this weekend while the Cartersville 50/70 Intermediate baseball team begins play at the Southeast Regional. The traditional 12U Little League Baseball Georgia state tournament begins Saturday at Brinkley Park in Smyrna with Cartersville Little League in action as the District 1 champ. In Columbus, Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) is the District 1 champion at the five-team state tournament that opens Saturday morning. Meanwhile in Kernersville, North Carolina, Cartersville Little League (13U) is the Georgia representative at the 50/70 Intermediate Southeast Regional.
