The Adairsville Tigers locked up a state playoff berth Tuesday night at home with a 6-5 win over Bremen. The Tigers scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead and then held off the Blue Devils late for the one-run win. Bremen scored twice in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead and added three more runs in the sixth inning. Dawson Craig (5.2 IP, 5R, 0ER, 2H, 4BB, 4K) earned the pitching win for Adairsville by working into the sixth inning. Jarrett Scott (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) earned a save by retiring the final four outs. Three Tigers finished with two hits each including Jarrett Scott (double, RBI), Landon O’Neal (RBI), and Chris Roper. Adairsville (15-10, 9-4 Region 6-AAA) visits Bremen (15-10, 6-7) Thursday at 5:55 p.m. to wrap up regular season play. With a win, Adairsville could reach a second-place tie with Gordon Lee in the region standings, but the Trojans hold the seeding tie-breaker. That means the Tigers will begin the Class AAA state playoffs on the road with a doubleheader next Monday at either Carver-Atlanta or Sandy Creek.

Cartersville pitchers Logan Shrewsbury and Sawyer Wilson combined for eleven strikeouts and a two-hit shutout Tuesday night in a 14-0 win at Hiram to close out the Hurricanes’ regular season. The win for the Canes completed a 15-game sweep of their 2023 Region 7-5A opponents and set a new regular season win record for the Cartersville program with 27 wins. The victory also marks the first time the Canes have gone undefeated in region play since 2013. Eighteen different Cartersville players saw action in the five-inning shutout. The Purple Hurricanes scored single runs in the first and third innings followed by three runs in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth. Cameron Cochran was the only Cartersville player with two hits including one double. Charlie Rothschild had a double and three RBIs. Hunter Kelly doubled in one run and Shrewsbury hit a solo home run. Miles Owen, Trip Bradley, Caleb Daniel (RBI), Tristan McKibben, Julez Pratt, and Hayden James (two RBIs) added one hit apiece. Luke Miller (sac fly) and Maddox Frazier (sac fly) added two RBIs each. Hiram’s season ends with a 4-22 record. The Hornets were winless in Region 7-5A. Cartersville (27-2, 15-0) will be the No. 1-seed from Region 7-5A and will host a best-of-three first-round state playoff series beginning next Monday against Jefferson (18-8) — the No. 4-seed from Region 8-5A. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Monday (time TBA) with a third game on Tuesday if needed. The Dragons defeated the Purple Hurricanes for the Class 4A state title in 2018.

The Woodland Wildcats completed a three-game sweep of Cass Tuesday night with a 5-1 home win over the Colonels. Woodland led 3-0 after the first two innings and tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win. Cass scored its only run in the top of the fifth on a two-out, RBI double by Chase Tatum. Ayden Ray hit a two-run home run in the first inning for Woodland and Coby Barrett gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly. Woodland’s fourth-inning run scored on an infield error and the Wildcats’ insurance run in the fifth was driven in by Mason Williams. Hunter Shirley (3.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for Woodland. Zach Lambert (3.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 6H) also pitched for the Wildcats. Trenton Payne (4 IP, 5R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K) took the pitching loss for Cass. Hunter Lovett (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 2K) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Ray had one other hit to go with his homer. Jakiyon Porter, Williams (RBI), Rowan Billings, and Connor Stermer had the other Woodland base hits. Tatum had a pair of doubles for Cass. Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts, and Luke Hollis also had two hits for the Colonels. Connor Jenkins and Nic Wright added one hit apiece. Woodland (18-12, 12-3) finishes as the No. 2-seed from Region 7-5A and will host the No. 3 team from Region 8-5A in the first round of the state playoffs. That best-of-three series begins Monday with a doubleheader. If a third game is necessary, it will be played on Tuesday. With Dalton’s 9-4 win at Calhoun Tuesday night, the loss for Cass eliminated the Colonels from playoff contention and ended their season with a 10-18 overall record and a 5-10 mark in region play.

In the first game of a four-game conference series this week, Georgia Highlands College baseball defeated the Andrew College Tigers 10-8 Tuesday night in Cuthbert. The next three games of the series will be hosted by Georgia Highlands with a single game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday. Tuesday, Jay Murdock hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning as the Chargers scored four runs and grabbed an early lead. In the fifth, GHC added three more runs to increase their lead to 8-2 and added two more in the sixth inning to make the score 10-3. The Chargers then held off the Tigers down the stretch for their two-run win. Declan Dun (4.2 IP, 3ER, 8H, 2BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Georgia Highlands and was credited with the win. Five other pitchers — Trippe Moore (1 IP, 4ER, 5H), Cason Rich (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2K), Garrett Sagro (0.1 IP, 1K), Skyler Thellman (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K), and Chandler Anderson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) all worked in relief. Anderson was credited with a save. Murdock was one of five Chargers to produce two hits. He finished with four RBIs. Mitchell Walker, Ryan Wideman, Adam Love (RBI), and CJ Blackwell (two RBIs) also had two hits each. Hudson Sapp added one hit and one RBI in the victory. Georgia Highlands (28-17, 8-9 GCAA) hosts Andrew College (24-17, 5-12) Friday night at 5 p.m. and Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team won both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at East Georgia State. The Lady Chargers won the opening game 7-3 and took the second game 7-1. Georgia Highlands had a pair of freshman left-handed pitchers toss complete games in the two victories. Jaycie Hand pitched all seven innings in the opening win scattering ten hits and three walks to allow three runs. She struck out eight. Rena Fraga tossed seven complete innings in the Game 2 win limiting the Bobcats to six hits and two walks. Fraga struck out two. Madison Dennis led the Chargers’ offense with five hits on the day including a double and three RBIs. Brady Tharp and Annsley Todd followed with three hits each. Tharp homered, doubled, and drove in two runs. Todd had one RBI. Malone Aldridge, Abigail Lathrop (RBI), Avery Fisher, Allison Deweese, Sydney Goddard (double, two RBIs), Audrey Johnson (three RBIs), and Jordan Blair (double) added one hit apiece. Tuesday’s two losses dropped East Georgia to 8-17-1 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (18-24, 12-8) will host Motlow State CC next Monday in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Adairsville girls' soccer team was eliminated in the second round of the GHSA Class AAA playoffs Monday night in Watkinsville, falling to Oconee County 10-0. The host Warriors raced to a 6-0 lead in the first half and closed out the contest in the second half with four more goals. Oconee County improved to 15-4-1 on the season and advanced to the state quarterfinals on April 24 against the Pike County/Savannah Country Day winner. The Lady Tigers have their season close with an 11-6 record.

The Cartersville girls’ tennis team lost 3-1 at Jefferson Monday in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament. Cartersville’s Chloie Obanion won her Line 3 singles match in straight sets for the only Lady Canes’ point. The Line 1 doubles pair of Anna Ramey/Lauren Lawson were leading in the third set when their match was halted. The Lady Dragons, runners-up from Region 8-5A, advance to the second round of the state tournament to play the Midtown/Chattahoochee first-round winner. LOGANVILLE 3, CASS GIRLS 0 The Cass girls' tennis team lost its first-round match in the Class 5A state tournament on the road, falling at Loganville, 3-0. ZACH WILSON — Penn State University-Greater Allegheny (Jr., Woodland HS) … saw action in two of his team’s four games over the weekend and was 0-for-2 at the plate with one walk and scored one run. PSU-GA (15-16, 7-9) split games with Penn State-Fayette. They visit Mount Aloysius Tuesday and conclude their regular season Friday and Saturday with home-and-home doubleheaders against Penn State-Beaver.

The Woodland Wildcats overpowered host Cass in both games of a doubleheader Monday night, winning 16-2 and 15-4. Woodland, who had already secured the No. 2-seed from Region 7-5A in next week’s Class 5A state playoffs and a home series, outhit the Colonels 30-13 in the two games Monday. Zach Lambert (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB) collected the opening game pitching win in relief of Wildcats’ starter Ayden Ray (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K). Coby Barrett (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 4K) retired the final six outs on the mound for Woodland. Austin Daves (6 IP, 1ER, 3H, 4BB, 9K) went six innings in the second game to earn the pitching win. Logan Bentley (0.1 IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB) and Carson Waits (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) pitched for the Wildcats in the seventh inning. Jakiyon Porter and Julian Wright led the Wildcats’ offense in the doubleheader with five hits each. Porter’s efforts included a double, a sacrifice fly, and four RBIs. Wright had a pair of doubles, one triple, and three RBIs. Ray followed with four hits that included two doubles and three RBIs. Wildcats with three hits each included Chase Carson (two triples, one sac fly, four RBIs), Mason Williams (triple, five RBIs), Brett Good (triple, double, two RBIs), and Conner Lujan (double, sac fly, three RBIs). Rowan Billings added a pair of doubles for Woodland with three RBIs and Connor Stermer also had two hits including a double and three RBIs. Five Colonels had two hits each in the doubleheader including Chase Tatum (RBI), Hunter Lovett, Connor Jenkins (RBI), Nic Wright, and Justin Peace (double, two RBIs). Jesiel Moctezuma (RBI), Cayden Roberts, and Carson Hill had one hit each for Cass. Hill (4 IP, 10ER, 12H, 3BB, 5K) was tagged with the pitching loss in the opener. Roberts (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H) was the pitcher of record in the second game. Cass utilized seven other hurlers during the twin bill including Peace (1.1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K), Wesley Collins (0.2 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB), Trenton Payne (2 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2K), Lovett (1 IP, 1K), Tatum (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K), Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB), and Israel Contreras (1 IP, 8ER, 7H, 1BB). Cass (10-17, 5-9) visits Woodland (17-12, 11-3) Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. to wrap up the regular season schedule. While the Wildcats have clinched a state playoff berth and will host their first-round series, the Colonels need a win on Tuesday or a Dalton loss at Calhoun Tuesday to claim a berth of their own. A Cass loss and a Dalton win would make the Catamounts the No. 4 seed from Region 7-5A and eliminate the Colonels.

The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes swept a doubleheader with Hiram Monday evening at the Cartersville Baseball Complex to set a new school record with 26 regular season wins. The Canes can extend that record Tuesday at Hiram in their final regular season game. Monday night, Cartersville blanked Hiram 16-0 in the opening game in three innings and won the second game 15-0 in four innings. Canes’ pitchers limited the visiting Hornets to only one hit in the doubleheader. The lone Hiram hit came in the second inning of Game 1 off Phillip Schiltz who struck out the other nine batters he faced. In Game 2, Canes’ pitchers Geoffrey Gore, Dawson Bishop, and Jackson Harwell combined on a four-inning no-hitter, and the trio struck out seven of the thirteen batters faced. Canes’ hitters smacked five homers in the doubleheader. Miles Owen, Gavin Shrewsbury, Harrison Childers, Caleb Daniel, and Maddox Frazier hit one each. Owen finished the night with three hits and five RBIs. Childers had three hits and three RBIs. Frazier added a double and totaled three RBIs. Shrewsbury had three RBIs and Daniel completed the twin bill with four RBIs. Kaden Stephenson (double, two RBIs), Hunter Kelly (double, two RBIs), Trip Bradley (three RBIs), Paul Gamble (two RBIs), and Isaac McNair-Seigler (double, RBI) all finished the doubleheader with two hits. Landon Cole (RBI), Cameron Cochran, Turner Abernathy, Nate Russell, and Luke Miller added one hit apiece. With the doubleheader sweep, Cartersville (26-2, 14-0 Region 7-5A) extended its current win streak to 20 games. The Canes wrap up regular season play Tuesday at Hiram (4-20, 0-14).

The Adairsville boys’ tennis team earned a berth in the Class AAA state tournament by placing fourth at the Region 6-AAA Championship Tournament. The Tigers defeated Gordon Lee 3-2 in the opening round to reach the semifinals before falling to Bremen 3-0. In the third place match, Adairsville fell to Bremen 3-0. Against Gordon Lee, Camden Teems and Michael Spinks won at Line 2 and Line 3 singles. Braden Mathis and Jack Baxter won at Line 1 doubles to secure the team’s third point. Against Bremen, Spinks won his first set and was leading in the second set when the Blue Devils secured their decisive third team point. In the loss to Coahulla Creek, Braden Potter was leading in the third set at Line 1 singles and Spinks was up a set and leading in the second set at Line 3 singles when the Colts secured both doubles and Line 2 singles to win the match. The Tigers open the state playoffs Tuesday against Sandy Creek. The match will be conducted at Northgate High School in Newnan.
