Top-ranked Cartersville went into Saturday’s home game with Calhoun knowing they had already won the series, coach Kyle Tucker and the Hurricanes wanted to complete the sweep. The Canes won the first two games of the week 2-1 on Tuesday and 4-3 in 12 innings on Thursday. After falling behind early on Saturday, the Canes chipped away and eventually took the lead with a three-run sixth inning to pull out a 7-5 victory. The win completed a three-game Region 7-5A sweep of the Yellow Jackets. Following a scoreless first inning Saturday, Calhoun posted a five-spot in the top of the second inning. The Yellow Jackets had three singles in the frame, but also took advantage of a walk, a hit batsman, two errors, and a sacrifice fly to build a 5-0 lead. Cartersville responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Luke Miller delivered a two-run single and a Calhoun error on a ground ball enabled a third run to score. Paul Gamble smacked a solo home run to center field to narrow the Yellow Jackets’ advantage to 5-4 in the fourth inning and pulled the Hurricanes within striking distance. The score stayed that way until Cartersville took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Miller singled again to lead off the inning and later scored on Caleb Daniel’s RBI single. Harrison Childers doubled in the next at-bat scoring Miles Owen, who had walked, and Daniel. Nicholas Hruby (5 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 4K), who took over for starter Sawyer Wilson (2 IP, 5R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) in the third inning, allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh but recorded one of his three strikeouts to end the game and earn the pitching win. Miller finished the day with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Childers followed with two hits including a double and two RBIs. Owen, Daniel (RBI), Ryan Johnson, and Gamble (HR) added one hit each. Calhoun falls to 3-11 on the season and 0-3 in region play. Cartersville (11-2, 3-0) begins their three-game region series with Woodland Tuesday on the road. The Canes will host the Wildcats Thursday and the series will wrap up Friday back at Woodland. All three games are scheduled for the first pitch at 5:55 p.m.

The Adairsville girls' and boys' soccer teams both lost road games Friday night at Bremen. The Lady Tigers were shutout 8-0 and the boys fell to the Blue Devils, 5-1. BREMEN 8, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 0 The Lady Tigers fell behind 5-0 in the first half and never recovered in an 8-0 loss at Bremen. The Lady Blue Devils improved to 9-5 on the season and 3-0 in Regoin 6-AAA. Adairsville (8-4, 3-1) has region matches Tuesday at Coahulla Creek and Friday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. BREMEN 5, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 Despite playing well in a physical and scoreless first half, the Tigers struggled in the second half and dropped a 5-1 decision at Bremen Friday night. Bremen (9-2-1, 2-1) scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks early in the second half and Adairsville never recovered. JJ Grimaldo scored the Adairsville goal with an assist from John Mark Shepard. Adairsville (5-7, 2-2) travels to region-leading Coahulla Creek Tuesday and makes the journey to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Friday. The Tigers can clinch a state playoff berth with a win in either contest.

The Cass girls and boys track and field teams were both runner-ups Thursday at a six-team meet hosted by Darlington in Rome. The Cass girls finished with 133 points and were runner-up to Pepperell (195). Darlington (123.5) placed third followed by Chattooga (54), Coosa (26.5), and Unity Christian School (18). The boys’ meet was won by Darlington (235) followed by the Colonels (218) and Pepperell (112). Coosa (43) was fourth followed by Unity Christian School (27) and Chattooga (23). Georgia Highlands College pitcher Jaycie Hand tossed a five-inning no-hitter Friday as the Chargers blanked South Georgia State 17-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Carrollton High product needed just 51 pitches and struck out two with no walks. The Chargers' defense committed one error, ending the lefty’s bid for a perfect game. Meanwhile, the GHC offense exploded for two runs or more in each inning after the first. Madison Dennis had three hits including a triple, a double, and three RBIs. Abigail Lathrop (RBI), Audrey Johnson (RBI), and Brady Tharp contributed two hits each. Allison Deweese (double, four RBIs), Malone Aldridge (two RBIs), Jordan Blair (double, two RBIs), and Taylor Justice (triple, two RBIs) added one hit each. South Georgia State won the opening game, 6-5. The Hawks outhit Georgia Highlands ten to six in the first game. Rena Fraga (5 IP, 5R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Emma Veitch (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) retired the final three outs in the circle. Avery Fisher had two hits including a double and one RBI. Tharp and Johnson also doubled with two RBIs each. Aldridge and Lathrop added one hit each. Following the doubleheader split, South Georgia is 6-24 overall and 1-3 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (10-18, 4-4) visits Chattanooga State Wednesday for a non-conference twin bill before hosting South Georgia State next Saturday (March 25).

Cass baseball swept a doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at the Cass Athletic Complex to complete a three-game series sweep of the Hornets. The Colonels won 11-1 in five innings in Thursday’s first game and then took the nightcap, 6-0. Cayden Roberts (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 4K) tossed a five-inning, complete game to earn the pitching win in Game 1. A trio of Cass pitchers — Hunter Lovett, Trenton Payne, and Devan Hutchinson — combined to blank to Hornets in Game 2. Lovett (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 6K) made the start on the mound. Payne (3 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 4K) and Hutchinson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) worked in relief. Connor Jenkins (two doubles, 4 RBIs) and Jesiel Moctezuma (double, RBI) had four hits each in the two games. Chase Tatum homered and had two doubles with three RBIs. Nic Wright also had three hits and two RBIs on the day. Cayden Roberts homered and doubled completing a four RBI day. Hunter Lovett chipped in two hits and Carson Hill added one hit and one RBI in the doubleheader. The Colonels also stole 14 bases in the two games. Hiram dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-5A. Cass (8-5, 3-0) plays a three-game region series with Dalton next week. The Colonels host the Catamounts Tuesday at 5:55 p.m., travel to Dalton Thursday, and host the third game of the series Friday.

Phillip Schiltz threw seven shutout innings of relief and the Canes pushed across a deciding run in the top of the twelfth inning Thursday night to win an extra innings battle at Calhoun, 4-3. The win comes on the heels of Tuesday night’s 2-1 walk-off win by the Canes and now gives Cartersville a 2-0 lead in the three-game series. Calhoun’s Andrew Purdy hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Cartersville’s Caleb Daniel — who had singled earlier in the inning — scored on Harrison Childers’ sacrifice fly to cut the Calhoun lead to 2-1. Daniel then hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave the Canes a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Calhoun tied the game on a double, two walks, and a sacrifice fly. The score remained 3-3 until the twelfth, but not without plenty of action in between. The Canes got a potential go-ahead run to third base in the top of the seventh but couldn’t finish the rally. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the eighth but Schiltz, who took the mound in the sixth for starter Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB, 7K), got out of the danger with a strikeout. In the top of the twelfth, Daniel led off with a single. Childers and Isaac McNair-Seigler followed with walks to load the bases. Calhoun pitcher Purdy was then called for a balk that sent Daniel across the plate for the ultimate winning run. The Yellow Jackets also loaded the bases in the bottom of the twelfth with no outs, but Schiltz mowed down the side with three consecutive strikeouts to preserve the win. Schiltz (7 IP, 0R, 2H, 4BB, 12K) struck out 12 to earn the pitching win. Daniel led the offense with three hits including a home run and two RBIs. He also walked twice. Luke Miller, Miles Owen, McNair-Seigler, Tristan McKibben, and Hunter Kelly added one hit apiece. Childers had one RBI with his sac fly. Cartersville (10-2, 2-0) and Calhoun (3-10, 0-2) are scheduled to complete their three-game series Friday at 5:55 p.m. at Richard Bell Field.

After placing 2nd in the Area 10 Championship match two weeks ago and winning their first-ever home post-season match on their new home range versus Paulding County last week, the Canes Rifles' post-season success came to an end with an 1159-1115 loss to East Coweta High School in the state semi-final round. The Canes finished the prone round just one point behind Coweta with 3 of the Canes shooters scoring perfect scores in the prone - Team Captain, senior, Angelina Christ; sophomore, Caleb Adams, and freshman, Lucy Evans all shot 100s, along with Teddy Serrano and Wyatt Hicks from East Coweta. East Coweta pulled away from Cartersville during the standing position outscoring the Canes by 36 points and added to their points total in the kneeling position, outshooting the Canes by 9 points. Canes freshman Lucy Adams fired the match's top score of 291 with 19 inner 10s, followed by East Coweta's Teddy Serrano, who also shot a 291 but with 15 inner 10s. Lucy kept the crowd on the edges of their seats through her very last shot. Needing just one more inner 10 in the kneeling position to score a 292 and individually qualifying for the state championship match on April 1st, she fired a 9.5 on her very last shot, falling just one point short of the 292 score for the second time this season. Canes' sophomore Caleb Adams shot 278; Angelina Christ fired 276; and sophomore, Luis Rangel, and freshman Harper Cole Eubanks also contributed with scores of 270 and 266 respectively. Teddy Serrano led East Coweta High School's scoring with a 291, followed by Wyatt Hicks' 290, along with Destiny Nazario and Aubrey Hancock - both shooting 289. Leonardo Garciappola fired a 281. East Coweta competes at the Ga State Championship match on April 1st. Coach Jeff Dickerson said he is extremely proud of this young team - "the best rifle team we've had." "It's been a great year but a bitter-sweet one as well. We scored our highest team scores ever, and every member of the team scored personal best scores throughout the season. All but one will return to the team next year - Team Captain, Angelina Christ, graduates in May. She is an original founding member of the team when it started in her sophomore year and has served as Team Captain for the last two years. Her awesome talent and exceptional leadership will be missed."

The Wildcats scored four runs in the second inning and three more in the fifth inning to take Thursday’s first game against Dalton, 7-0. Ayden Ray (7 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 9K) silenced the Catamount bats with a complete game effort on the mound. He gave up just two hits and two walks while fanning nine. Seven different Wildcats had at least one hit each. Mason Williams finished with two hits and one RBI. Conner Lujan (triple, 3 RBIs), Chase Carson (triple), Rowan Billings, Julian Wright (RBI), Connor Stermer (RBI), and Brett Good (RBI) contributed one hit each. WOODLAND 6, DALTON 4 In Thursday night’s second game, the Wildcats posted six runs across the first four innings and then held off a late threat by the Catamounts for a 6-4 win and a three-game sweep of the series with Dalton. Austin Daves (4 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 4K) went the first four innings on the mound to collect the pitching win for the Wildcats. Hunter Shirley (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K) tossed the fifth and sixth innings. Coby Barrett (0.1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) started the seventh and Ayden Ray (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) struck out two in the seventh to earn a save. Chase Carson had three hits and one RBI to lead the Woodland attack. Ray finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Rowan Billings (RBI), Conner Lujan, and Julian Wright had the other Wildcat hits. Dalton falls to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (8-7, 3-0) has a three-game series next week with Cartersville. The Wildcats will host Monday, visit the Canes on Thursday, and host again on Friday.

Georgia Highlands softball dropped both games of a doubleheader Thursday at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The host Fillies defeated the Chargers 9-1 and 10-2. Georgia Highlands managed only three hits in the opening game. Malone Aldridge had a double. Audrey Johnson and Jordan Blair had the other hits for the Chargers. Aldridge had two hits in the second game including a solo home run. Taylor Justice doubled. Abigail Lathrop and Johnson had the other base hits for GHC. Jaycie Hand was the losing pitcher in the first game. Rena Fraga was tagged with the pitching loss in Game 2. ABAC improved to 12-12 on the season and 4-0 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Georgia Highlands (9-17, 3-3) plays at South Georgia Friday.
