The Cass Colonels started strong Friday evening posting four runs in their first two offensive frames on their way to a 7-3 non-region win at Rome. The host Wolves tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first but the Colonels' two-run second inning put Cass in front the rest of the way. Both teams added single runs in the fourth before Cass added additional runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Cayden Roberts (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 0BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Cass and yielded a pair of unearned runs. Trenton Payne (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H 2BB, 4K) worked the fourth and fifth innings. Hunter Lovett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) and Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 0R, 1BB, 1K) kept the Wolves scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. The Colonels totaled six hits in their win and took advantage of three walks and three Rome errors. Nic Wright had two hits and one RBI. Roberts, Carson Hill (RBI), Connor Jenkins, and Payne had the Colonels’ hits. Chase Tatum drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies and Jesiel Moctezuma also added a pair of RBIs. The loss dropped Rome to 2-2 on the season. Cass improved to 2-0 and will host Rome Thursday.

The Adairsville girls soccer team fell behind early but came from behind to defeat visiting Woodland Friday night, 2-1. Reagan Weightman scored in the 11th minute off an assist from Libby Morgan to give the Lady Wildcats an early 1-0 advantage. Adairsville tied the game before the half on Jacksyn Elrod’s goal in the 23rd minute. Jordyn Hartline was credited with an assist. In the second half the two teams traded scoring opportunities but it was Lizzie LeMay’s goal for Adairsville in the 70th minute that proved to be the game-winner. Elle Causby had the assist. Woodland keeper Abby Duncan was credited with four saves to keep the game tight. Woodland (0-1-1) hosts Paulding County on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Adairsville (5-1) plays at Gilmer Tuesday in a 5 p.m. kickoff.

The third time was a charm for the Adairsville Tigers Friday night. After falling in a pair of close regular season games to the top-seeded and region host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Warriors, Adairsville came out on top when it counted Friday night in the Region 6-AAA championship game at LFO, 55-54. The game was in doubt throughout the night. Adairsville led 31-28 at the intermission but the Warriors made up the deficit in the third quarter to knot the score at 43-all. Zach Postell, who led the Tigers with 17 points, knocked down a pair of shots from behind the three-point arc in the final period while Tay Jackson and Xavious Nalls added the Tigers’ other six points in the period to escape with a one-point victory. Nalls finished with 14 points as did Tre Winters. The Warriors were limited to just 11 points on four field goals and no free throws in the fourth quarter. Three of their made shots were from behind the arc. Brent Bowman and Amari Burnett led LFO with 12 points each. Jayden Dover added nine for the Warriors. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (16-11) will now enter the Class 3A State Tournament as a 2-seed. The Warriors will host the Douglass Astros (13-13) in the opening round. Adairsville (19-8) begins next week’s state tournament with a home game against winless Carver-Atlanta. The Panthers are 0-25 this season from the four-team Region 5-3A. Game times and whether teams will play Tuesday or Wednesday in the first round will be determined later this weekend. BREMEN 39, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 38 The Adairsville girls dropped a nail-biter to the Bremen Lady Blue Devils Friday evening in the third place game of the Region 6-AAA tournament at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School. Adairsville led 12-8 after one quarter but trailed 21-19 at halftime. The Blue Devils moved to a 33-29 lead after three quarters and then held off a late charge by the Tigers to win by one point. Bremen freshman, Marley Derringer, led the Devils’ scoring with 14 points. Analee Morris scored 15 points for Adairsville. NaXyria Roberts finished with eight and Aliya McBryde tossed in seven for the Lady Tigers. Bremen (19-8) will be a 3-seed in next week’s state tournament first round and will visit Carver-Atlanta (16-10). Adairsville (13-14) will be a 4-seed and must play at Region 5-AAA champions, Sandy Creek (15-11), in the opening round.

The Cass Colonels held off the Cartersville boys for the third time this season Friday night in Calhoun to claim the Region 7-5A third place game, 67-66. Cass led 17-12 after one quarter and 29-26 at halftime but Purple Hurricanes stormed back in the third quarter to take a 46-45 lead into the final eight minutes. Cass emerged on top, however, with the trio of Jelani Hames, KJ Rogers, and Devin Henderson scoring all but one of the Colonels’ 22 fourth quarter points. Cartersville’s Romo Pace kept the Canes close, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the final stanza. Rogers led Cass with a game-high 32 points. Hames finished with 13. Jayden Foster followed with 11 points and Henderson scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter. “KJ Rogers came up big tonight,” said a relieved Kevin Cunningham following the game. “It is so difficult to beat a team three times in a season and we got it done tonight against a really good Cartersville team. We now wait to see if we draw Jefferson or Winder-Barrow in the first round of the state tournament.” In addition to Pace’s scoring for Cartersville, Jaylen Scott finished with 11 points. DJ Cain tossed in 10. Kaden Baldwin and Ced McClinich added eight and seven points, respectively. Cartersville (12-15, a 4-seed) will open the Class 5A state tournament next week at Region 8-5A regular season and tournament champion, Winder-Barrow. The Bulldoggs are 19-8 on the year. Winder-Barrow outlasted Jefferson Friday night for the Region 8-5A title, 63-61. Cass (14-13, a 3-seed) will also play on the road. The Colonels travel to Jefferson (10-17) who was a surprise finalist in Region 8-5A. The Dragons began that region tournament as a 5-seed and beat Flowery Branch and Heritage before falling in the region finals. Game times and whether teams will play on Tuesday or Wednesday will be announced later this weekend. DALTON 69, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 38 The Lady Canes lost 69-38 to Dalton in the Region 7-5A third place game Friday afternoon in Calhoun. Dalton (20-8) will be a 3-seed in next week’s first round of the Class 5A State Tournament and will play at Loganville. Cartersville (16-10) will be a 4-seed and will visit Jefferson on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Woodland Wildcats lost at the Villa Rica Wildcats 3-2 Thursday evening on a walk-off, two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wesley Gaines singled with two outs to start the Villa Rica seventh and a walk moved him to second base. After Gaines stole third base, Mason Westmoreland followed with a single to center field for the dramatic finish. Villa Rica scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a pair of walks and two hits and the game remained 2-0 until Woodland knotted the score in the top of the seventh. Rowan Billings and Chase Carson singled to open the Woodland seventh and pinch runner Conner Lujan, running for Billings, scored on a passed ball. Mason Williams followed with a double into center field but Carson was cut down at the plate trying to score. After Williams moved over to third on a ground out, Luke Evans singled him home to tie the score. Coby Barrett (2.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland in relief of starter Hunter Shirley (4 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 3K). Woodland totaled eight hits in the loss. Carson and Julian Wright had two hits each. Jakiyon Porter, Billings, Evans, and Williams had the other safeties. Woodland (1-2) hosts Chapel Hill Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Adairsville boys basketball advanced to the Region 6-AAA tournament championship game with a 57-46 win Thursday night over LaFayette. The Region 6-AAA tournament is being conducted at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School. The Tigers started quickly Thursday behind 13 first quarter points by Tre Winters. The scoring flurry helped Adairsville to a 20-8 lead over the Rambler at the end of the first quarter. LaFayette partially closed the gap by halftime with Adairsville leading 30-21 at the intermission. The Rambler then outscored the Tigers 15-9 in the third quarter to pull within three points. Adairsville then outdistanced LaFayette 18-10 over the final eight minutes to hold on for an 11-point win. Winters finished with 24 points to lead the Adairsville attack. Tay Jackson followed with 11 and Zach Postell scored 10. Xavious Nalls chipped in eight points while Ben Abernathy and Jamarian Pullum added two points apiece. Dawson Pendergrass led LaFayette with 20 points. LaFayette (15-8) will play Friday at 5:30 in the region’s third place game against Ringgold. Adairsville (18-8) advances to the region’s championship game Friday night against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. LFO edged Ringgold in a semifinal Thursday night in overtime, 84-83. Thursday's win for the Tigers also secures a home game in the first round of the state playoffs as either a No. 1 or a No. 2 seed next week pending Friday night's results. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 66, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 47 7th-ranked Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe methodically pulled away from Adairsville Thursday night in a region semifinal game to win 66-47. LFO extended its lead in each period. The Lady Warriors led 12-7 after one quarter; 27-15 at the intermission; and 46-30 at the end of the third quarter on their way to a 19-point victory. Christen Collins led Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe with 16 points. Angel Simmons scored 15 for the Warriors. NaXyria Roberts led Adairsville with 13 points. Darby Adams and Analee Morris followed with seven points each. Alissa Winters added six points for the Tigers. LFO (23-1) will host Coahulla Creek in the region championship game Friday night at 7 p.m. The Adairsville girls (13-12) will play Bremen in the third place game at LFO at 4 p.m.

The Adairsville Tigers boys soccer team earned its first win of the season Wednesday at Mt. Zion-Carroll taking a 3-2 non-region victory. Kyden Silverberg scored for the Tigers in the first half to help Adairsville to a 1-1 tie at halftime. After falling behind 2-1, Arthur Leffler knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal on a penalty kick. With approximately two minutes remaining, Blade Benefield scored the game-winner for the Tigers. “We were sloppy at times,” said Adairsville coach John Terrell. “We are getting closer to being at full strength but still haven’t played a game with our full preseason starting lineup. Region play begins next week and we hope to have everyone back.” The Tigers host Woodland Friday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 0 Lizzie LeMay scored a hat trick in the first 19 minutes Wednesday night at Mt. Zion-Carroll as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 6-0 win over the host Eagles. Jordyn Hartline, Gabi Becerra, and Jacksyn Elrod each had an assist on the LeMay goals that were scored in the 10th, 11th, and 19th minutes of the first half. Elrod gave Adairsville a 4-0 lead in the 36th minute off an assist from Becerra as the Lady Tigers carried the four-goal advantage to the halftime locker room. In the second half, Victoria Loudon scored unassisted in the 57th minute and Jessica Hogue fed an assist to Annie McCormick for the Lady Tigers’ 6-0 lead in the 61st minute. The Adairsville girls (4-1) host Woodland Friday night.

Region 7-5A top-seeded Calhoun led at the end of each quarter Wednesday night but the Lady Canes stayed within striking range throughout before falling to the Yellow Jackets, 55-50, in the region tournament semifinals. Region Player of the Year, Britiya Curtis scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Sa’Niah Dorsey also reached double figures for Calhoun with 11 points. Calhoun led 18-7 at the end of the opening eight minutes and 28-21 at halftime. Cartersville narrowed its deficit to 42-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Kaytlin Arnold powered the Cartersville offense with 19 points. Ansley Griffin finished with 13. Ja’Kayah Draughn contributed nine. Nayel Camper had four points. Senai Camper and Taff Bradley added two points each. Calhoun (21-4) advances to Friday night’s championship game at 7 p.m. where the Lady Jackets will face Hiram. HIRAM 60, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 40 The third-ranked Hiram boys led Cartersville 27-19 at halftime and extended their lead to 46-29 by the end of the third quarter in an eventual 60-40 win over the Hurricanes in the Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday night in Calhoun. Four Hornets — Jay Boyd, Chase Tyler, Walt Matthew, and Sekai Lockhart — finished with double-digit scoring. Boyd had 15 points. Tyler scored 14. Matthew and Lockhart added 10 points each. Jaylen Scott led Cartersville with 13 points. DJ Cain scored nine. Parnel Gamble finished with six. Romo Pace contributed five points. Ced McClinic posted four. Jamauri Brice and Kaden Baldwin added two and one points, respectively. Hiram (23-2) advances to the Region 7-5A championship game Friday night against the host Calhoun Yellow Jackets. Wednesday night, Calhoun won the rubber matchup, 67-62, on the Yellow Jackets’ home floor in the semifinals of the Region 7-5A tournament. Calhoun led 17-14 after one quarter; 36-27 at the intermission; and 51-42 at the end of the third quarter before holding on for a five-point win. Dylan Faulkner led the Yellow Jackets with 23 points. Daniel Streete tossed in 11 and Emaree Winston scored 10 points for Calhoun. KJ Rogers paced the Colonels with 23 points. Jakai Baldwin followed with 14. Jelani Hames scored 13 points. Jayden Foster contributed seven. Sacovie White chipped in with six and Kevin Henderson added two for Cass. The Wildcats posted five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night to take control and head to victory in a back-and-forth contest with the visiting Decatur Bulldogs. Woodland led 3-0 after two innings before Decatur scored twice in the third and added two more runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 4-3 lead. Woodland’s rally in the bottom of the fifth closed out the scoring in an 8-4 Wildcats win. Coby Barrett (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Woodland in relief of starter Rowan Billings (4 IP, 4ER, 3H, 5BB, 6K). Austin Daves (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 3K) collected a two-inning save. Ayden Ray finished with three hits and two RBIs for the Wildcats. Mason Williams drove in two runs with one double while Conner Stermer added one hit. The loss dropped Decatur to 1-2 on the season. Woodland (1-1) is scheduled to visit Villa Rica Thursday in a 5:55 p.m. start.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers won a low-scoring battle with Ringgold Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Region 6-AAA tournament at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 37-27. Adairsville led at each quarter stop and shut out Ringgold in the fourth quarter. The win not only advances the Lady Tigers to a region semifinal game Thursday night, but it also secures a state tournament berth next week. The Lady Tigers led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter; 26-19 at halftime; and 33-27 at the end of the third quarter. NaXyria Roberts scored 16 points to pace Adairsville. Analee Morris scored eight. Aliya McBryde contributed six points. Alissa Winters tossed in five and Megan Gregory added two points for the Tigers. Brooke Baldwin led Ringgold (10-15) with seven points. Adairsville (13-12) will challenge top-seeded host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in the region semifinals Thursday night at 7 p.m.
