Cartersville scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings Tuesday night at Richard Bell Field to send the Purple Hurricanes’ game with Campbell to extra innings. The Canes then won the game in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off base on balls. The Spartans (0-1) led 2-0 through five innings with single runs in the top of the first and top of the fifth before Cartersville made the comeback. Luke Miller singled home Harrison Childers for the Hurricanes’ first in the bottom of the sixth. Childers had doubled to start the frame. In the seventh, Cartersville scored on two walks and an infield error to make the score 2-2. In the Canes’ eighth, walks to Paul Gamble and Trip Bradley plus a Ryan Johnson bunt that was misplayed by the Campbell pitcher for an error loaded the bases. Miles Owen then coaxed a five-pitch walk for the Purple Hurricanes’ winning run. Caden Carroll (3 IP, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Cartersville. Geoffrey Gore (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 6K) tossed the fourth through sixth innings. Phillip Schiltz (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) collected the pitching win by working the final two scoreless frames. Cartersville had only four hits in the win. In addition to the hits by Childers and Miller in the sixth. Owen and Caleb Daniel added one hit apiece. Ryan Gold had two hits and one RBI to lead the Campbell offense. Cartersville (1-0) visits Etowah Friday night at 6 p.m. CASS 6, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 The Colonels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday night and never trailed in a 6-1 season-opening win at home over Southeast Whitfield. Cass added a single run in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth. The lone run by the Raiders (0-2) was a solo home run by Brady Ensley in the top of the fifth that made the score 3-1 at the time. Carson Hill (5 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 7K) made the start on the mound for the Colonels. Trenton Payne (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) closed out the Cass win. The Colonels managed only four hits. Justin Peace (2 RBIs), Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts, and Payne (double) finished with one hit each. Cass (1-0) travels to Southeast Whitfield Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Georgia Highlands swept a doubleheader Monday with visiting Point University. The Chargers won the opener 13-9 and blanked the Skyhawks 10-0 in the second game. Hudson Sapp and Jay Murdock had three hits each in the first game. Sapp also had a walk and two RBIs. Murdock’s hits included a double and one RBI. Zayd Brannigan finished with two hits including a double and three RBIs. Austin Slate also had a two-hit game. Game 1 starter Bryce Clark worked four innings to collect his second win of the year. He struck out four. Ryan Well (1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K) and Cason Rich (2 IP, 3ER, 5H, 6K) pitched in relief for the Chargers. In Game 2, Oliver Wood (5 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) and Davis Mortland (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) combined to blank Point. Barrett Eldridge led the Chargers’ offense with four hits. Sapp finished with two hits and three RBIs. Parker Poteet (RBI), Trevor Lovett, Conner Faulkner (2 RBIs), Trippe Moore (RBI), and Cole Turner (RBI) added one hit each. The Adairsville Tigers posted runs in four of their six offensive frames Monday night and had three pitchers combine to scatter just four hits in a 6-2 season opening win at home over Dominion Christian. Kaiden Coker (1 IP, 0R, 2H) was credited with the pitching win for Adairsville after working a scoreless fifth inning in relief of starter Jack Whitley (4 IP, 2ER, 2H, 6BB, 4K). Jack Nelson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K) closed out the final two innings for the Tigers. Evan Sanders finished with two hits for Adairsville. Luke Altizer (double, 2 RBIs), Peyton Bowen (RBI double), Jarrett Scott (RBI), Landon O’Neal (RBI), Chris Roper (double), Tyler Driggers, and Jack Nelson added one hit each. The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams secured state tournament berths Monday night with first-round region tournament wins over Cass and Dalton, respectively. The Cass boys also punched their ticket to the state playoffs with a first-round tournament win over Woodland. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 53, CASS 46 The Lady Canes won a back-and-forth tilt with rival Cass Monday night, 53-46, in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament in Calhoun. Cartersville led 19-9 after one quarter and 28-21 at halftime before Cass stormed back to carry a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter. The Lady Canes surged back ahead in the final quarter, outscoring the Lady Colonels 19-7 for a seven-point win. Ansley Griffin and Nayel Camper led Cartersville with 12 points each. Campbell Rogers followed with 10. Taff Bradley and KK Arnold finished with seven and six points, respectively. Olivia Woods led Cass with 14 points. Kiana McDaniel scored 12. Nevaeh Woods contributed eight points and KK Evans added seven for the Lady Colonels in their loss. With their win, Cartersville (16-8) advances to the Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday night to play No. 1-seed Calhoun on the Lady Jackets’ home floor. The win also locks in a state playoff berth for the Lady Canes who can earn a home state playoff game with a win over Calhoun. Cass has its season end with a 14-11 record. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 74, DALTON 67 The Purple Hurricanes rallied in the second half Monday night for a come-from-behind win over Dalton, 74-67, in the opening round of the Region 7-5A tournament at Calhoun High School. The Catamounts led Cartersville 19-13 after one quarter and 41-27 at halftime before the Canes surged to the lead in the third quarter. Cartersville outscored Dalton 24-7 in the third quarter and held on in the final period for a seven-point win. For the Canes, it was their third win in their last four games. Ced McClinic led the Canes with 17 points. Romo Pace followed with 14. Parnel Gamble contributed 13 points and Jaylen Scott scored 11. DJ Cain tossed in eight points. Kaden Baldwin had five. Tyren Milner chipped in four points and Collin Fletcher added two. Eli Burt led the Catamounts with 21 points. Chaz Ramsey scored 16 and Kobi Cooper added 14 points in Dalton’s loss. With their victory, Cartersville (12-14) advances to the Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday night to play top-seeded and 3rd-ranked Hiram. The Canes also secure a state playoff berth next week and would host a first-round state tournament game with a win Wednesday night. Dalton’s season ends with a 16-9 mark. CASS BOYS 52, WOODLAND 49 For the second time in four nights, the Cass Colonels fended off a severe challenge from the Woodland Wildcats. Cass edged Woodland 56-54 last Friday night in both teams’ final regular season game and the final region standings pitted the same two teams against one another in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament Monday night in Calhoun. This time Woodland carried a seven-point lead into the final eight minutes but the Colonels' full-court pressure generated their offense in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind win. Woodland led 14-8 after the first quarter before Cass grabbed a 26-23 lead at the intermission. The Wildcats outscored the Colonels 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 39-32 advantage but Cass would rally in the final period. The Colonels won the fourth quarter 20-10 to escape with a three-point win, 52-49. Sacovie White scored 14 points to pace the Colonels. KJ Rogers and Jayden Foster finished with eight points each. Jelani Hames scored seven. Jakai Baldwin contributed six points. Devin Henderson pitched in five points and Kevin Henderson added two for Cass. Brelace Williams led the Wildcats with a game-high 22 points. Isaiah Livsey posted 16 points and Zyon Heath added six points for Woodland. "We were down nine in the fourth quarter and just came back and found a way to win," said Colonels' head coach Kevin Cunningham. "I'm so proud of these guys and the way they battled to find a way to win. Hopefully, we can stay motivated and find a way to beat Calhoun." With their victory, Cass (13-12) moves into the Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday against host Calhoun. The win also guarantees a state tournament berth for the Colonels next week. Cass can secure a home, state playoff game with a win Wednesday over the Yellow Jackets. Woodland has its season come to an end with a 2-24 record. DALTON 59, WOODLAND GIRLS 23 Emma Hefner and Grace Ridley scored 12 points each Monday afternoon to help lead Dalton over the Woodland girls, 59-23, in the opening round of the Region 7-5A tournament in Calhoun. Dalton built a 33-9 lead by halftime and was not threatened. Morgan Echols scored eight points for the Lady Cats. Megan Schultz tossed in six and Indya Coaxum added five points for Woodland. Dalton advances to the semifinals Wednesday to play Hiram. Woodland’s season ends with a 2-24 record.

Williams totaled 2⅓ innings pitched yielding no runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the Jaguars’ first baseman was 1-for-4 and scored a run in a 7-6 home loss to Erskine College last Tuesday. Georgia Highlands softball has struggled to a 1-9 start in the Chargers’ first ten games. A seven game losing streak to open the 2023 campaign was snapped February 5 with an 8-7 home win over Cleveland State CC. Sophomore Allison Deweese has led GHC offensively through the first ten games batting .353 in 34 official at bats. She has three doubles, two homers, and seven RBIs. Freshman Abigail Lathrop has hit .357 in nine games. She has four doubles. Four other Chargers with at least 20 at bats — sophomores Jordan Blair, Madison Dennis, Audrey Johnson, and Malone Aldridge — are hitting .313 or higher. Blair and Aldridge have each hit three home runs and have combined for 15 RBIs. A pair of freshmen have carried most of the pitching duties. Rena Fraga is 1-4 in five starts with one complete game and a 10.00 ERA. Jaycie Hand is 0-5 in five starts with one complete game, 12 strikeouts, and an 8.20 ERA. The Chargers are back in action Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Walters State CC. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Georgia Highlands baseball split a doubleheader with Lincoln Trail College Friday at LakePoint in Emerson dropping the first game 4-3 before shutting out the Statesmen in the second game, 4-0. In the opener, Lincoln Trail scored three times in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Chargers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame but got no closer. Hudson Sapp had two hits for Georgia Highlands including a double and two RBIs. Bryson Stripling doubled and added a sacrifice. Davis Newman drove in one run with a hit. Austin Slate and Parker Poteet had the other Chargers’ base hits. Declan Dunn (3.1 IP, 4ER, 9H, 1BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Zach Valentine (3.2 IP, 0R, 1H) retired the final 11 outs for GHC. In Game 2, Trey Baker (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 3K) and Cason Rich (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) combined to blank the Statesmen. Baker started and picked up his second pitching win of the season. Rich earned his first save. Sapp was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk at the plate. He drove in all four Georgia Highlands runs. Slate, Poteet, and Ryan Wideman had one hit apiece in the win. The Chargers (6-1) have a home doubleheader Monday with Point University prior to hosting Cleveland State CC Tuesday afternoon. GHC will also host a three-game series with Wabash Valley Friday and Saturday at Advent Health Stadium in Rome. They will play a single game Friday afternoon and a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in the Rome Braves ballpark.

In high school boys basketball action Tuesday night, Adairsville, Cass, and Excel Christian Academy secured important region wins as the 2022-23 regular season begins to wind down. Adairsville took control in the second quarter and went on to defeat visiting LaFayette 65-41 to remain in a first place tie in Region 6-AAA. Cass moved into a second place tie with Calhoun in Region 7-5A by knocking off the host Yellow Jackets 61-50 and Excel Christian remained unbeaten in GAPPS Region 1-IAA play with a 64-58 victory at Lyndon Academy. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 65, LAFAYETTE 41 The Tigers used a nice defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack Tuesday night at home to beat LaFayette, 65-41, for their sixth straight win. Following a 15-15 first quarter, Adairsville built a 36-25 advantage by halftime. The Tigers extended their lead to 55-32 by the end of the third quarter and went on to a 24-point win. Xavious Nalls led Adairsville with 17 points. Tay Jackson followed with 13. Ben Abernathy posted 12 points. Tre Winters contributed 10 and Zach Postell added eight points for the Tigers. Zach Barrett and Shiray Walker led the Ramblers (13-6, 9-3) with eight points each. Adairsville (16-7, 11-1) heads to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night for a first place showdown with the Warriors who are also 11-1 in Region 6-AAA. CASS BOYS 61, CALHOUN 50 The Colonels earned an important road win Tuesday night at Calhoun and find themselves in a second place tie in the Region 7-5A standings with three region regular season games remaining. Calhoun led the Colonels 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Colonels took the lead for good in the second period. Cass led 22-16 at halftime and was up 40-30 after three quarters before holding on for an 11-point win. Dylan Faulkner scored a game-high 18 points to pace the Yellow Jackets. Caden Schild added nine points for Calhoun (12-9, 5-2). KJ Rogers led Cass with 16 points. Sacovie White and Jelani Hames contributed nine points each. Jayden Foster and Kevin Henderson finished with eight points apiece for the Colonels. Cass (11-10, 5-2) plays another region game Friday night at Dalton at 7:30 p.m. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 64, LYNDON ACADEMY 58 Excel Christian started slowly Tuesday night at Lyndon Academy trailing the Terriers 8-2 in the early minutes and 29-20 at one point in the second quarter. The Eagles made a nice run before the end of the half, however, and carried a 36-33 lead to the intermission. Excel led 54-46 at the end of the third quarter and Lyndon kept the game close throughout the final period. In fact, the Terriers narrowed the Excel lead to 63-58 with just 45 seconds remaining before the Eagles were able to close out a six-point win. Ethan Hughes scored a game-high 39 points including all 20 of the Terriers’ first quarter points. Excel was led by Kyron McClendon with 19 points. Jakaden Barkley and Jacob Taylor followed with 16 points each. Kamarion Profit added 13 points for the Eagles. The loss dropped Lyndon Academy to 11-8 on the season and 3-5 in GAPPS Region 1-IAA. Excel Christian (15-8, 9-0) hosts Unity Christian School Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Church at Liberty Square. DALTON 72, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 41 Dalton led visiting Cartersville 20-7 at the end of the first quarter Tuesday night and 34-17 at halftime in an eventual 72-41 win over the Purple Hurricanes. Drew Snyder led the Catamounts with 14 points. Chaz Ramsey scored 11 and Eli Burt added 10 points for Dalton (14-7, 3-4). Monte Tolbert was the top scorer for Cartersville with 13 points. Cedric McClinic added five for the Canes. Cartersville (8-13, 1-6) plays at Woodland Friday night at 7:30 p.m. HIRAM 71, WOODLAND BOYS 33 The third-ranked Hiram Hornets built a 43-13 lead by halftime and cruised to a 71-33 home win over Woodland Tuesday night. The win by the Hornets extends their current win streak to 13 games. Hiram (19-2, 7-0) hosts Calhoun Friday. Woodland (2-20, 0-7) entertains Cartersville Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. tip. The Cass basketball teams honored their senior team members Friday night in their final home regular season games and swept the teams from Woodland. The Lady Colonels topped the Woodland girls 56-25 and the Cass boys held off a stiff challenge by the visiting Wildcats for a 56-54 win. CASS GIRLS 56, WOODLAND 25 The Cass girls outscored Woodland 22-5 in the third quarter Friday night to pull away in a 56-25 region win. The Lady Colonels led 12-10 after one quarter and held a 22-12 advantage at the intermission before the third-quarter surge. KK Evans and Kiana McDaniel paced Cass with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Olivia Woods added nine points for the Lady Colonels. Kasidee Wall led Woodland with nine points. Libby Morgan added eight for the Lady Cats. Woodland (2-22, 0-1 Region 7-5A) will face Dalton Monday in the first round of the Region 7-5A Tournament. The game will tip at 4 p.m. at Calhoun High School. Cass (14-10, 2-8) will play Cartersville in the opening round of the Region 7-5A Tournament in Calhoun. The matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday. CASS BOYS 56, WOODLAND 54 The visiting Wildcats led 13-10 after one quarter and 28-27 at halftime Friday night at Cass but it was the Colonels’ who grabbed the lead in the third quarter and held off Woodland down the stretch to escape with a 56-54 Region 7-5A win. Sacovie White and KJ Rogers led the Colonels with 12 points each. Jelani Hames and Jayden Foster posted 10 points apiece for Cass. Brelace Williams scored a game-high 19 points for Woodland. Bryson Von Tonder finished with 15 points on five three-pointers. Isaiah Livsey added 10 points for the Wildcats. Woodland (2-23, 0-10) and Cass (12-12, 6-4) will square off again Monday in the opening round of the Region 7-5A Tournament at Calhoun High School. The tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Purple Hurricanes led 19-8 after the opening eight minutes Saturday afternoon at home against Cedartown and basically maintained that advantage through the first three quarters before pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 67-47 win. Cartersville led 29-19 at halftime and was ahead 48-36 at the end of the third quarter. DJ Cain and Parnel Gamble paced the Canes scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively. Sam Wiedetz produced eight points while Tyren Milner and Kaden Baldwin added seven points each. Xavier Holiday led Cedartown (0-22) with 16 points. Quentin Cotton added nine for the Bulldogs. Cartersville (11-14) opens the Region 7-5A Tournament Monday night at 8:30 p.m. against Dalton at 8:30 p.m. The Catamounts swept the regular season series with the Canes, winning 51-49 in the Storm Center on January 10 and 72-41 on January 31 in Dalton. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 63, CEDARTOWN 21 The Lady Canes cruised to an easy 63-21 victory Saturday afternoon at the Storm Center over the Lady Bulldogs of Cedartown. With the non-region win, Cartersville finished off the regular season with a 15-8 record. The loss for Cedartown completed their regular season winless at 0-23. Next for the Lady Canes is a Region 7-5A tournament first-round game against Cass on Monday at 7 p.m. at Calhoun High School. The Lady Canes swept the regular season series with the Lady Colonels, winning 61-57 at home in overtime on January 13. Cartersville also won at Cass on January 27, 64-49.

The Cass wrestling team had seven individual first place finishes, three runner-up finishes, and eleven total qualifiers for the GHSA State Championship Finals following action Saturday at one of two State Sectional sites in Class 5A. The Colonels, along with Woodland and Cartersville, were in Milton for Section A at Cambridge High School where the three local schools combined to advance 24 individuals. After dropping the State Duals Championship match to Jefferson just weeks ago, the Colonels have put themselves in good position to compete for the Team Traditional title next weekend. They face an uphill battle, however, because the Dragons will send 13 individuals to the finals in Macon from their Section B qualifier at Locust Grove High School. Jefferson had seven individual weight class winners. Also at Section A on Saturday, Woodland had a pair of individual winners, three second place finishers and qualified nine for Macon. Cartersville, meanwhile, will send four to Macon. The top six in each of the fourteen weight divisions at each sectional advanced. Cass weight division winners included Lee Camp (106), Hunter Barrett (113), Caden Alford (120), Jake Crapps (126), Rowdy Duck (132), Tyler McKnight (144), and Zach McKnight (165). Hayden Santora (138) and Champ Higdon (215) of Woodland also won their weight classes on Saturday. Six locals reached the finals but finished as Sectional runner-up. Tanner Toups (138), Kriecg Roe (157), and Parker Dunn (190) of Cass placed second. Cartersville’s Grant Adams (120) was a runner-up along with Zachary Wallace (144), Heath Tatum (165), and Kwadrus Wilson (Hvwt.) of Woodland. In total, that means an impressive 16 of 28 wrestlers in the fourteen weight division finals on Saturday were from either Cass, Woodland, or Cartersville. Other state finals qualifiers from the three local teams included Amari Kinnamore (106) of Woodland with a third place finish. Cartersville’s Talan Nix (138) and Delroy Hurst (Hvwt) placed fourth along with Paul Lanier (126) of the Wildcats. Eaiden Neal (126) of the Canes advanced with a fifth place finish while Nathan Cates (120) and Jovante Luke (157) of Woodland and Mason Tompkins (150) of Cass placed sixth. The Traditional State Finals weekend begins Thursday at the Macon Centreplex and concludes with state finals bouts on Friday night for Class 5A. ADAIRSVILLE WRESTLING QUALIFIES EIGHT FOR GHSA TRADITIONAL FINALS The Adairsville High wrestling team had eight individuals advance from the Class 3A Section A tournament at Upson Lee High School in Thomaston Saturday to reach the Traditional State Championship tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Macon Centreplex. Jacob Pasley was runner-up in the 144-pound weight class while Jamori Speights (138) placed third for the Tigers. Fourth place finishers for Adairsville included Brett Lance (150), Jaimon Long (190), and Seth Sellers (215). Adairsville’s Victor Singer (132) and heavyweight Jett Johnson earned fifth placed finishes with Madden Boyce (113) advancing as a sixth place qualifier.
