The Cass soccer teams split a pair of contests Tuesday night at Mount Paran Christian with the boys winning 3-0 and the girls falling 10-0. Camden Hillhouse scored the Colonels' first goal unassisted in the first half for a 1-0 lead at the intermission. In the second half, Alex Hernandez and Christian Viella added goals for Cass. The Cass boys improved to 3-2 on the season while the Lady Colonels slipped to 1-3. The two teams host Pepperell Wednesday in a doubleheader that kicks off at 5:30 p.m.

The Excel Christian Academy boys took a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter Tuesday night but failed to convert on several key possessions and missed some critical free throws late in the game falling at The Walker School in Marietta 53-50 in the opening round of the Region 7-A-Private tournament. The host Wolverines led 11-8 after one quarter and held a 29-23 lead at halftime. Excel narrowed the margin to 40-39 by the end of the third quarter and briefly grabbed a 43-40 lead at the 5:40 mark. From that point, Walker outscored the Eagles 13-7 to escape with a three-point win. Ricky McKenzie led Walker and all scorers in the game with 25 points. Jackson Evans added 12 points for the Wolverines. Elijah Payne led Excel with 19 points. Jacob Taylor followed with 15. Comari Nettles contributed 11 and Jakaden Barkley added five points for the Eagles. Walker (18-7) earned a state tournament bid and advanced to the region semifinals at Christian Heritage Thursday night against the host and top-seeded Lions. Excel Christian had its season come to an end with an 11-14 record.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Cass Lady Colonels both won Region 7-AAAAA opening round tournament games Monday night in Calhoun securing berths in the 2022 Class 5A state playoffs that will begin next week. There’s still region business ahead for the two teams, however, as they will play Wednesday in the region tournament semifinals and again Friday in either third place consolation games or region title games. In other action Monday, both Woodland teams lost their opening round contests in the same tournament at Calhoun High School and the Adairsville girls were knocked out of the Region 6-AAA tournament in LaFayette by Coahulla Creek. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 56, CASS 52 The Cartersville boys secured a berth in the Class AAAAA state tournament Monday night by outlasting Cass in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament in Calhoun, 56-52. After trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, Cartersville grabbed and 26-25 lead by halftime and extended their advantage to 43-39 by the end of the third quarter. With lead exchanges again in the final period, the Canes held off the Colonels down the stretch for a four-point victory. Kam Callahan scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cartersville. Romo Pace finished with ninen points. Jaeden Scott and Luke Gambill tossed in eight each. Monty Tolbert contributed seven and Jamauri Brice added four points for the Hurricanes. Jelani Hames led Cass with 13 points. Sacovie White and Ethan McIntyre followed with 10 apiece. Kaden Baldwin chipped in seven points. Jayden Foster finished with five. Devin Henderson added four points and Jackson Hale three for the Colonels. The Cass boys have their season end with a 9-16 record. Cartersville (11-12) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. to play top-seeded Hiram at Calhoun High School. CASS GIRLS 57, CARTERSVILLE 33 The Cass girls punched their ticket for the state playoffs Monday night by defeating rival Cartersville in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament, 57-33. Cass led 17-8 after one quarter and never trailed. The Lady Colonels took a 35-12 lead at halftime and were up 47-19 through three quarters. A double-double by Claire Davis with 13 points and 12 rebounds paced the Lady Colonels. Freshman Miya Winston also reached double figures with 10 points for Cass. Mikaela Jackson and Zion Hayes followed with six points each. Amaya Ford, Haley Johnson, and Kiana McDaniel each scored five. Justice Bennett and Keara McDaniel added four and three, respectively. Jakayah Draughn led Cartersville with 12 points. Zoe Casey scored six. Taff Bradley finished with five points. Ansley Griffin scored four. Aujyhnae Davenport chipped in with three points and Milena Bihm added two for the Lady Canes. The Cartersville girls’ season comes to a close with a 4-14 record. Cass (22-4) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. where they will play Blessed Trinity at Calhoun High School. HIRAM 63, WOODLAND GIRLS 29 The Hiram girls led 31-14 at halftime and cruised to a 63-29 win over Woodland Monday evening at Calhoun High School in the first round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Kalisha Phillips scored 20 points and Taylor Crawford added 14 for the Lady Hornets (14-9) who advance to play Calhoun in the region semifinals Wednesday at 4 p.m. Abigail Taylor led Woodland with 11 points. Morgan Echols scored eight. Kasidee Wall contributed seven points and Reagan Weightman added three for the Lady Cats. “I am proud of everything our two seniors (Abigail Taylor and Dylynn Motes) did both on the court and from leadership perspective this season with so many younger teammates,” said Woodland head coach Kyle Morgan. “I’m hoping our younger kids choose to invest in their games and have bright futures with continued hard work.” The season ends for the Woodland girls with a 2-23 mark. COAHULLA CREEK 63, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 57 The Adairsville girls led Monday night heading into the fourth quarter, but a 22-15 advantage by the Lady Colts in the fourth quarter lifted Coahulla Creek to a 63-57 Region 6-AAA tournament win at LaFayette High School. The Lady Tigers were ahead 36-27 at the intermission but Coahulla Creek narrowed the lead to just one point at 42-41 by the end of the third quarter. Brinkley Reed scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Colts. Marlee Fossett added eight. Alissa Winters led Adairsville with 20 points. Ya’Torrean Hale followed with 14. Autumn Henderson scored 10. Haley Stiles and Lexie Childers contributed four each. Naxirya Roberts finished with three and Darby Adams added two points for the Lady Tigers. Coahulla Creek (11-15) advances to play Sonoraville Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back at LaFayette. Adairsville has its season end with a 12-14 record. BLESSED TRINITY 89, WOODLAND BOYS 52 Blessed Trinity used a balanced scoring attack placing five players in double figures Monday night at Calhoun High School to defeat Woodland 89-52 in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Woodland led 11-9 after the opening eight minutes, but the third-seeded Titans outscored the Wildcats 27-9 in the second quarter to take a 36-20 lead at the intermission. Blessed Trinity (14-12) extended the lead to 60-34 by the end of the third quarter. Brigham Rogers led Blessed Trinity with 19 points. Jackson Lewis followed with 13. Jack Whalen and Ty Harpring finished with 12 points each and Cole Weaver added 10 for the Titans. KJ Rogers scored 21 points for the Wildcats. Harlin Morris finished with 10. Brelace Williams contributed six points. Jonah Plott scored four. David Jinks and Kyler Williams added three points apiece for Woodland. Blessed Trinity advances to play Calhoun Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the region semifinals. The Wildcats have their season end with a 5-19 mark.

Woodland opened the 2022 baseball season Monday night by pounding out 16 hits in an 18-12 win over visiting Carrollton. Woodland led 9-0 after two innings and scored in every offensive frame. Carrollton narrowed the margin to 13-11 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Wildcats secured the win with a four-run sixth inning. Chase Carson led the Woodland offense with four hits including a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Jacob Gravett (3 RBIs) and Julian Wright (2 RBIs) had three hits each. Rowan Billings finished with two hits including a double, a sacrifice fly, and two RBIs. Ayden Ray (double, sac fly, 3 RBIs), Mason Williams (sac fly, 3 RBIs), Conner Stermer (RBI), and Austin Sanders (double) added one hit each for the Wildcats. Woodland utilized six pitchers to secure the win. Woodland (1-0) travels to Paulding County Friday with first pitch scheduled for 5:55 p.m. KELL 11, CASS 3 The visiting Kell Longhorns led 5-3 through six innings Monday night at Cass but then posted a six-run seventh inning to put the game away and defeat the Colonels 11-3. Both teams scored twice in the first inning with Kell adding single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings for a 5-2 lead. Cass answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Longhorns sealed the game with their seventh inning rally. Caden Marcos, Tyler Bradford, and Nicholas Dawkins combined for six of Kell’s nine hits and five RBIs. Carson Hill led the Colonels’ offense with two hits including a home run, a double, and three RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance. Aidan Larkin had one double in there at bats. Bentley Markley and Jesiel Moctezuma had the other Cass base hits. Hayden Cole (3 IP, 4R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Aidan Cottingim (2.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 5K), Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 4ER, 1H, 3BB, 2K), and Connor Jenkins (0.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) also pitched for the Colonels. Hayden Poarch and T.J. Printup, Jr. led seven Adairsville players receiving All-Region 6AAA honors recently announced by the league’s coaches. Poarch and Printup were named to the Boys All-Region First Team. Tre Mitchell received Second Team honors and Tre Winters received Honorable Mention. Local Bartow County collegiate athletes were busy on softball and baseball diamonds this past week with Division I schedules ready to begin this coming weekend. Local college basketball players are winding down their regular seasons with conference tournaments on the horizon while swimming and the indoor season for track and field have reached their conference championships. Meanwhile, Cartersville native Ashton Hagans continued solid work with the Toronto Raptors NBA G-League affiliate -- Raptors 905 -- including a double-double in points and assists Saturday. NBA G-LEAGUE ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 (Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … started at point guard and produced a double-double Saturday in a 109-104 win Saturday at the Delaware Blue Coats. Hagans finished with 17 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, and three assists won for the fourth time in the last five games. He also came off the Raptors’ bench last Tuesday to score four points with three boards, two assists, and a pair of steals during a 110-99 win at the Cleveland Charge. Breedlove also swam a leg on relay teams that placed 12th in the 400-yard medley, 13th in the 200-yard freestyle, and 13th in the 400-yard freestyle relays. TENNIS EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … won her Line 3 singles match 6-0, 7-6 and paired with teammate Rebecca Brody in a 6-4 Line 3 doubles loss as the Red Wolves lost 5-2 Friday at Central Arkansas. Saturday against Kansas City University, the Surcey/Brody doubles team won 7-5 at Line 3 and Surcey fell 4-6, 6-2, 5-7 at Line 3 singles in a Red Wolves’ 4-1 win. At Missouri State Sunday, Surcey lost at Line 3 singles 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 and her doubles match with Brody was stopped with the pair leading 5-3 when the Red Wolves secured a team win. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … lost his Line 2 singles match 6-4, 6-2 as the Lions lost to visiting Birmingham-Southern College this past Saturday afternoon. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (Grad Student, Woodland HS) … placed second in the high jump (1.86m), second in the long jump (6.69m), and second in the triple jump (13.68m) scoring 21 of his team’s 90 points in a third place finish by the Britons at WHAC v. MIAA Challenge in Grand Rapids. Next for Albion is the MIAA Indoor Championships February 26 in Angola, Indiana. Columbus State went 3-1 in the event with a win over Montevallo and two over Union. BRIANA HILL — Covenant College (So., Woodland HS) … went 0-for-1 but scored a run in a 6-3 win Saturday as the Scots defeated University of the South 6-3 at the Mississippi University for Women Invitational. Covenant dropped its opener Friday at the tournament but won the final three games. Now 3-1, the Scots host a doubleheaders with George Fox University (Oregon) Wednesday and Thursday. SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Fr., Adairsville HS) … came off the bench in four games over the weekend and went 2-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored as the 4th-ranked Nighthawks went 6-0 hosting the Surf ’N Turf Classic in Dahlonega. HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … started in the circle tossing 3-and-1/3 innings with no decision in a Cougars’ 9-5 win Saturday over Texas-San Antonio. Todd allowed four earned runs on four hits, three walks, and a hit batsman facing 18 batters. Houston (4-1) also had wins during the Houston Invitational over Dayton and Texas Tech. The Cougars host Oklahoma, McNeese State, and Texas State this weekend in the Houston Classic. BASEBALL JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-8 with two RBIs last week as the Trojans went 1-3 in a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders with Andrew College. Central Alabama (4-4) hosts John A. Logan CC Thursday and plays a doubleheader at Gordon State CC Saturday. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Jr., Woodland HS) … closed out the sixth inning and retired one batter in the seventh last Friday afternoon in a 14-0 home win over Albany State. Jinks struck out two of the four batters he faced allowing one hit. He also hit a batter. The Hawks (5-2) play at Georgia College Tuesday and open Gulf South Conference play Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series against Delta State. LOGAN MARTIN — University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the right-handed starter tossed seven innings Saturday without yielding an earned run, but received no decision in the Tigers’ 2-1 home win over Anderson University (Indiana). Martin scattered just two hits and issued no walks while striking out 13. He did hit two batters. His team led 1-0 when he left the game after seven innings, but had to regain the lead in the ninth inning for the victory. University of the South (2-1) hosts Millikin University (Illinois) in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. GARRETT MISHOE — University of West Georgia (So., Adairsville HS) … worked a scoreless eighth inning last Tuesday afternoon in the Wolves’ 11-1 win at Emmanuel College. Mishoe walked one and struck out one. West Georgia (5-1) also split a pair of games in South Florida this past weekend winning at Lynn University and dropping a game at Palm Beach Atlantic. The Wolves host Augusta University Tuesday and play a three-game Gulf South Conference series at West Florida Saturday and Sunday. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Fr., Woodland HS) … faced six batters yielding three hits and a walk in the Scots’ 13-4 win Saturday at Emory University. Smith recorded one strikeout. The victory was Covenant’s lone win in the three-game series. The Scots (1-2) play a three game series Friday and Saturday at Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven. PRESTON WELCHEL — Coastal Alabama - Bay Minette CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-4, walked three times, scored four runs, and stole two bases in a pair of Sun Chiefs’ losses Friday at Pearl River CC. Coastal Alabama - Bay Minette (2-2) plays home-and-home doubleheaders Thursday and Saturday with Lawson State CC. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made his debut entering in the sixth inning and worked the remaining four innings to pick up his first win — a 6-5 victory over Christopher Newport University. Facing 20 batters, he gave up one unearned run on four hits, two walks, and one hit batsman while striking out five. The Panthers (2-1) will host 9th-ranked Washington University (Missouri), 15th-ranked Trinity (Texas), and Lynchburg College Friday through Sunday in the Birmingham-Southern Classic. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 6-for-12 with a double, two RBIs, and one run scored in three home games against UVA-Wise over the weekend. The Jaguars (4-3) play at West Georgia Tuesday and visit Mars Hill University Friday and Saturday for a three-game series.

The 2021-22 high school basketball regular season has come to a close and now each of the local teams move into their respective post-season region tournaments. In each case, the top four teams at each of the tournaments will advance to the GHSA State Tournament which is scheduled to begin February 22-23 at higher seeds. That means a first or second place finish at this week's region tournaments will result in a home state playoff game in Round 1 while a third or fourth place finish will mean a road game in the first round. Claire Davis was named Co-Player of the Year in Region 7-AAAAA Saturday as 17 local players received All Region honors. Davis shares the Girls Player of the Year honor with Calhoun junior Britiya Curtis. On the boys side, Calhoun senior Peyton Law and Yellow Jackets junior Dylan Faulkner also were tabbed Co-Players of the Year. Lady Colonels freshman Miya Winston and Woodland senior Abigail Taylor were named to the girls All-Region 7-AAAAA First Team. Cartersville sophomore Ansley Griffin and Cass senior Haley Johnson were selected All-Region Second Team while Lady Colonels seniors Keara McDaniel, Justice Bennett, and Amaya Ford along with Cartersville sophomore Taff Bradley and freshman Layne Callan received Honorable Mention. Canes senior Kam Callahan and Cass junior Jelani Hames were named First Team All-Region. Cartersville junior Romo Pace, Woodland junior KJ Rogers, and Cass senior Ethan McIntyre received Second Team honors. Brelace Williams, a Wildcats sophomore and Canes senior Luke Gambill were named Honorable Mention.

The 8th-seeded Adairsville girls opened post-season play Saturday night at LaFayette with a 44-42 play-in round win over No. 9-seed North Murray at the Region 6-AAA Tournament. The Adairsville win completed a rare high school back-to-back sweep. The Lady Tigers defeated North Murray Friday night in both teams' regular season finale' 43-35. The Lady Mountaineers led 25-18 at halftime, but Adairsville outscored North Murray 15-4 in the third quarter to carry a 33-29 lead into the final period. The Lady Tigers then held on in the final eight minutes to advance with a two-point tournament victory. Haley Stiles paced Adairsville with 15 points. Lexie Childers followed with 11. Ya’Torrean Hale scored seven points and Alissa Winters added six for the Lady Tigers. Ava Robinette led North Murray (6-18) with 11 points. Bayleigh Winkler and Janna Baggett finished with 10 points each. Adairsville (12-13) plays again Monday night at 7:30 p.m. against No. 5-seed Coahulla Creek (10-15). The complete Region 6-AAA Tournament is being hosted by LaFayette High School.

Cartersville’s Elora Waterman placed fourth at the GHSA Girls Wrestling State Championships in the 102-pound division after going 4-2 in the tournament. Waterman advanced by forfeit in the opening round before losing in the state quarterfinals to Catarina Velasquez of Chestatee. She then won three consecutive bouts — two by pin — before losing in the third place match to Aneri Patel of Woodward Academy. Waterman’s wins included an 8-6 decision over Haley Zinninger of North Gwinnet and pin fall wins over Alexis Hart of Toombs County and Rachel Whetstone of Veterans. Cartersville teammate Anetra Witherspoon (197) did not place in the state tournament, but did finish 2-2. Witherspoon lost her first round match by fall to Amariah Marenco of Carrollton. She then pinned Zyonna Walker of Northside and Raychel Caldwell of Lamar County to reach the third consolation round where she lost by pin to Rosali Oshodi of Hiram. Cass wrestler Abigail Gentry (122) did not place and finished 1-2 at the state tournament. Gentry lost her opener by fall to Meta Xayabouth-Jones of Alexander. She then won a 5-1 decision over Arrie Battle of Jordan before losing in the second round of consolations to Jasmine Jenkins-Bey of Columbus.

The basketball teams at Cass and Adairsville both swept region opponents Friday night as the 2021-22 regular season came to a close. Cass swept region and county-rival Woodland while Adairsville swept games against visiting North Murray. At Cartersville's Storm Center, the Lady Canes and Hurricanes dropped region games to visiting Hiram. CASS GIRLS 72, WOODLAND 33 Claire Davis and Miya Winston scored 13 points each to help lead the Lady Colonels to their 21st win of the season Friday night at home over Woodland. Zion Hayes added 12 points for Cass and Justice Bennett finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Davis added six rebounds also and Winston contributed four assists. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 80, NORTH MURRAY 39 The Tigers raced to a 26-9 first quarter lead and never trailed in an 80-39 home win Friday night over North Murray. Adairsville led 44-24 at halftime and took a 66-35 lead into the final period. The region win locked up the No. 3-seed for the Tigers heading into next week’s Region 6-AAA Tournament at LaFayette. T.J. Printup, Jr. scored 29 points to lead the Tigers. Kavi Harris followed with 18. Tre Mitchell finished with 13 points and Tre Winters added 11 in the win. The Cass Colonels wrestling team won the 2022 GHSA Class 5A Traditional State Championship Friday night at the Macon Centreplex and Bartow County had six individual state champions in a pair of classifications. Cole Hunt (120) and Jake Crapps (126) of Cass won their weight class titles while four more Colonels finished as individual state runners-up. Hunt won by tech fall, 17-1, over Glen Decker of Harris County. Crapps won an 8-4 decision over Ola’s Conner Kimbrough. Lee Camp (106), AJ Piatt (113), Tyler McKnight (145) and Zach McKnight (170) were state runners-up for Cass. Camp dropped a 5-4 decision to Mason Moody of Locust Grove. Piatt lost 4-2 to Woodward Academy’s Colby McBride. Tyler McKnight (145) lost a major decision, 12-2, to Latrell Schafer of Veterans and Zach McKnight (170) lost by fall to Woodward Academy’s Gunner Fillipowicz.
