Former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence made his first regular season start for the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday in a 37-21 loss to the Houston Texans. The overall No. 1 NFL Draft selection out of Clemson completed 55 percent of his passes Sunday for 332 yards and three touchdowns, but was also picked off three times in the loss. In Major League Basebal, former Hurricanes pitcher Sam Howard collected his third win of the season last week as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Tuesday. The left handed reliever made two other appearances during the week. PRO FOOTBALL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season; Cartersville HS)… started his first NFL regular season game Sunday at the Houston Texans in a 37-21 loss. The 21-year-old quarterback was 28-for-51 passing for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions for the first time in his career — high school, college, and now professional. The loss also marked the first time Lawrence has had a losing record as a starting quarterback at any level. "It obviously sucks," Lawrence told his postgame presser. "Losing's always hard, especially when you feel like you're prepared and had a great week and really think we were ready. Just obviously didn't play well. It starts with me. I played really bad tonight. Disappointing for sure. I still believe in this team. I still know what we're capable of. We did some good things. We started off with some penalties, three-and-out; but then after that, we had a couple good drives, we're hitting some big plays. There's a lot of good things there, and we've got to keep doing those and learn from the bad. We've got to watch it and learn from it, for sure, but then flip the page. It's a long season. We can't let this snowball. We've got to move on and go win next week.” Lawrence’s first touchdown toss was to tight end Chris Manhertz from 22 yards and cut the Texans lead to 14-7 at the time. His other touchdown throws were a 41-yarder to D.J. Chark and a 4-yarder to Marvin Jones with just five seconds remaining in the game. Jacksonville (0-1) plays its home opener Sunday against the Denver Broncos. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) . . . made three appearances for the Pirates last week and picked up his third pitching win of the season. The 28-year-old worked a scoreless sixth inning Tuesday giving up one hit and one walk. His effort put him in position to earn a home win against the Detroit Tigers. He also worked two innings Friday against the Washington Nationals in a Pirates win. The southpaw gave up a solo home run to Josh Bell but also struck out two in the sixth and seventh innings. Sunday, Howard worked a scoreless ninth inning yielding one hit and one walk in a 6-2 loss to the Nationals. In 46 appearances this season, Howard is 3-4 with a 6.03 ERA across 37.1 innings with 47 strikeouts. CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… the 26-year-old infielder appeared in six home games last week — one against Biloxi and five against Charlotte. He was 3-for-18 at the plate with one HBP and one RBI. For the season, Justus has a .197 batting average in 234 official at bats splitting time between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville. The Cartersville High School cross country teams competed Saturday at the Carrollton Orthopaedic Invitational hosted by Carrollton High School on the GHSA State Meet Course. The Cartersville girls ran to a 12th place finish of 32 teams and the Cartersville boys finished 15th of 36 teams in the Large School Division. McIntosh won the girls Large School Division with Decatur winning the boys Large School Division. The girls Championship Division race was won by Marist with Decatur also capturing the boys championship division. The best individual times of the day were recorded in the two championship division races. Ethan Ashley of Denmark High School had the best time Saturday covering the 5k course in 15:55.48. Caroline Hood of Pace Academy won the girls individual title in 19:03.03. The Woodland girls finished first and the Woodland boys were third Saturday at the 6th annual Big Peach Mustang Stampede hosted by Kennesaw Mountain High School at Allatoona Creek Park in Acworth. The Lady Cats had all five runners finish in the top 12 of 89 participants to win with 35 points. Lovett was runner-up with 81 points and Creekview finished third in the 11-team race with 88 points. Woodland’s Rylee Evans won the 5k race in 19:46. She was followed by teammates Olivia Berry (3rd, 20:29), Emma Segars (8th, 20:41), Miranda Pelow (11th, 21:01), and Danielle Thayer (12th, 21:12). Creekview won the 12-team boys race with 46 points followed by Lovett (62), Woodland (89), Pickens (114) and Dalton (123) Tyler Jones (16:31) of Woodland finished fourth of 109 runners. McKinley Chappell (16:46) was sixth. Kain Tanturri (22nd, 17:49), John Forsyth (27th, 17:58), and Landon McSwain (30th, 18:05) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. The Woodland Lady Cats softball team won its fourth consecutive Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday with a 6-5 win over Cass in the championship game. The tournament was hosted by the Lady Colonels at the Cass High School Athletic Complex. Woodland blanked Cartersville in Saturday’s opening round to earn a spot in the tournament finals. Cass reached the championship game with an 11-3 victory over Adairsville in the first round. Cartersville placed third with a walk-off, 5-4 win over Adairsville. CHAMPIONSHIP: WOODLAND 6, CASS 5 Cass led 3-0 through 2-1/2 innings in Saturday’s Bartow County Tournament championship game, but Woodland narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the third before taking the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning. With the Lady Cats leading 5-3 through five innings, Cass scored single runs in the top half of the sixth and seventh frames, but a single run by Woodland in the bottom of the sixth provided the margin of victory. Cassie Jones led the Woodland bats with three hits and three RBIs. She also had the key RBI for the Lady Cats in the sixth inning that provided Woodland a 6-4 advantage at the time. Michiah Hicks (RBI) and Peyton Dorn collected two hits each for Woodland in the title win. Jessica Ryan had two RBIs with one hit. Alana Carnes, Dylynn Motes, and Lainey Baker added one hit apiece for the Wildcats. Dorn (4 IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K) and Baker (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 4K) shared the pitching circle for the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats (4-5 in Region 7-AAAAA) host Blessed Trinity in a region game Tueday at 5:30 p.m. THIRD PLACE: CARTERSVILLE 5, ADAIRSVILLE 4 Cartersville’s Ava Perkins lined a two-out single into left field Saturday in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Lady Canes to a 5-4, walk-off victory over Adairsville in the Bartow County Championship Tournament’s Third Place Game. The game winning hit drove home Kiley Arnold who had walked with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. The close contest saw both teams hold leads. Cartersville led 1-0 early with Adairsville grabbing a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Cartersville regained a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, but the Tigers knotted the score again in the sixth inning. Arnold (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for the Hurricanes in relief of starter McKinley Chada (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K). Chelsea Bates (6.2 IP, 4ER, 6H, 5BB, 6K) was tagged with the tough-luck pitching loss for Adairsville. She struck out six. Riley Mounger had two hits including a double for the Tigers’ offense. The Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Adairsville posted three runs in the top of the third to go ahead 3-2. From that point, Cass scored nine unanswered runs in the third through fifth innings for an eight-run victory. Alexis Woods picked up the pitching win for Cass tossing all five innings. She scattered three hits and a walk while striking out five. Jordan Clay (4.1 IP, 11R, 0ER, 10H, 5BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville despite allowing no earned runs. She recorded two strikeouts. McKenzie Pullam had a double for the Tigers’ offense. Brie Patterson and Jenna Young had the other Adairsville base hits. SEMI-FINAL: WOODLAND 8, CARTERSVILLE 0 Woodland’s Michiah Hicks led off the game with a solo home run and pitcher Lainey Baker tossed a four-hit shutout as the Lady Cats blanked Cartersville 8-0 in Saturday’s second semifinal game at the Cass High School Athletic Complex. Woodland led 4-0 after one inning and 6-0 through three before adding single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Baker struck out 13 and only walked one while earning the pitching win in six innings of work. Kennedy Stevens (3 IP, 6R, 4ER, 3H, 6BB, 2K) and Ava Perkins (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 6K) split time in the circle for the Hurricanes. Cartersville had four hits — all singles — by Campbell Rogers, Mikey Lewis, Erin McCrary, and Reese Dumas. In addition to Hicks’ leadoff home run for Woodland, Peyton Dorn (double, 2 RBIs) and Jessica Ryan had two hits each. Cartersville won a top-5 matchup with Creekside Friday night at Weinman Stadium while Adairsville routed Murray County in Chatsworth and Cass evened its season record with a win at Temple. Woodland, meanwhile, dropped a 13-9 decision to visiting North Springs as Bartow teams went 3-1 on the night. No. 5 CARTERSVILLE 17, No. 2 CREEKSIDE 14 Cartersville gained possession late in the fourth quarter Friday night trailing 14-10 and drove the length of the field to pull out a three-point, home win over 2nd-ranked Creekside. Jake Parker connected with Phillip Schiltz for a 21-yard touchdown with less than two minutes remaining to lift the Hurricanes (3-0) to victory. Parker also had a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Ray in the first quarter to open the game’s scoring and Jesus Gutierrez booted a 22-yard field goal in the second period to give the Canes a 10-6 advantage at halftime. The Seminoles first half touchdown was a 70-yard pick six by Daiquan White, but the PAT kick was blocked. Cartersville missed a 32-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter and then gave up the lead when Creekside blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for a score. A two-point conversion gave the Seminoles a 14-10 lead. Creekside slips to 2-1 on the season. Cartersville hosts Cherokee Friday at Weinman Stadium. ADAIRSVILLE 55, MURRAY COUNTY 13 Adairsville led 14-0 after one quarter and 34-0 at halftime in an eventual 55-13 Region 6-AAA win Friday night at Murray County. Tigers running back Eli Agnew, who rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns, scored twice in the opening period. The touchdown runs for the senior were from 1-yard and 3-yards. Sophomore quarterback Jonathan Gough connected with Evan Sanders on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter before Chris Roper scored on a 5-yard run and Agnew added his third scoring run from 3-yards. Murray County got on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a 16-yard run by Taylor Carrell and a Justice Knotts touchdown pass. Knotts was 15-for-24 for 155 yards and a touchdown in the Indians’ loss. Between the two Murray scores, Gough hooked up with Sanders again on a 10-yard touchdown pass making the score 41-13 at the end of the third quarter. Adairsville added a pair of fourth quarter scores. Tamarius Wilkey sprinted to a 66-yard touchdown run and Darien Hoskins added a 1-yard plunge for the 55-13 final. Murray County falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in region play. Adairsville (3-0, 1-0) has a bye week before hosting LaFayette on Friday, September 24. CASS 20, TEMPLE 7 Cass sophomore quarterback Devin Henderson ran for two touchdowns and connected with his brother, Kevin Henderson, on a 20-yard touchdown pass as the Colonels won at Temple 20-7. The Henderson connection gave Cass a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter after the defense blocked a Temple 35-yard field goal attempt. Devin’s 10-yard touchdown run late in the half lifted the Colonels to a 13-0 lead at the intermission. Following a scoreless third quarter, Devin Henderson’s 15-yard scoring scamper gave Cass a 20-0 lead. Late in the game, Temple scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Cam Vaughn to Carter Kittrell. Devin Henderson finished with 19 rushing attempts for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He was also 6-for-11 through the air for 139 yards and one touchdown. The second-year starter did throw one interception. The Cass defense limited the Tigers to 139 rushing yards on 30 attempts while Temple quarterback Cam Vaughn completed 11 of 21 attempts for 215 yards and one score. The loss drops Temple to 0-2 on the season. The Tigers play at Pepperell next week. Cass (2-2) hosts Ridgeland Friday at Doug Cochran Stadium. The game will be broadcast on BartowSportsZone.com. NORTH SPRINGS 13, WOODLAND 9 Visiting North Springs snapped an 18-game losing skid Friday night with a 13-9 win at Woodland. In a game that saw both offenses squander scoring opportunities, the Spartans came up with a crucial nine play, 70-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to secure the win. North Springs junior quarterback Anthony Young finished off the game-winning drive with a two-yard run. North Springs, who had not won a game since 2019 and lost 50-9 to Woodland last season, led 7-3 at halftime. The Spartans touchdown — an 18-yard run by Drushun Phillips -- capped a six play, 59-yard drive late in the second quarter. Woodland’s first half points came on a 31-yard field goal by Nick Sanchez with 2:02 left in the first quarter. Rickaylin Glover blocked a North Springs punt to set up Woodland’s second half touchdown. The Wildcats took over at the Spartans’ 15 yard line and scored with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Asa James. A two-point conversion attempt failed but Woodland had a 9-7 lead heading into the final period. North Springs improved to 1-3 on the season. Woodland (1-3) plays at Chamblee Friday.

Cartersville split a pair of volleyball matches Thursday night and Woodland dropped both of its matches in action at Calhoun High School. Cartersville defeated Woodland 25-15, 25-13, but then narrowly lost to Calhoun in three sets. Calhoun won the opening set 25-23. Cartersville won the second set 25-22 and the Yellow Jackets won the deciding third set, 15-12. Woodland also fell to Calhoun, 25-18, 25-7. Lauren Lawson led the Canes attack against Woodland with six kills. Ailee England and Vanessa Johnson added four kills each with two assists. Lily Gochee contributed 13 assists and one dig for Cartersville. Delaney Tuplin had two blocks, one kill, and one dig for Woodland. Lili Womack finished with four digs and one ace. Shaine Whitlock had three assists. Anastyn Jones contributed two digs and one kill while Haylee Roach added two service aces and one kill for the Lady Cats. In the Hurricanes loss to Calhoun, Lawson had nine kills followed by London Moultrie with eight kills. England finished with five kills and seven digs. Gochee totaled a dozen assists and two digs. Tennessee Abernathy ad 11 assists with two digs. Mia Nicklas was credited with 11 digs and Layne Condra added seven digs for the Canes. In Woodland’s loss to Calhoun, Womack had nine digs. Tuplin finished with seven digs and a pair of kills. Jones totaled three kills, three digs, and two aces. Madison West contributed two kills, three digs, and one ace while Shane Whitlock added six assists. Cartersville returns to action Tuesday night at North Cobb Christian. Cartersville softball swept a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night while Woodland split a doubleheader with Calhoun and Cass split games with Blessed Trinity. WOODLAND 1, CALHOUN 0 Woodland pitcher, Lainey Baker, struck out 14 while scattering four hits and one walk in a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Calhoun Thursday. Baker dominated the zone from the pitching circle with 73 of her 100 pitches for strikes. The game’s only run scored in the bottom of the second inning when Woodland’s Jessica Ryan doubled home Peyton Dorn. Ryan finished with two hits as did Michiah Hicks. Jordan Hammonds, Alana Carnes, and Baker added one hit each for the Lady Cats. CALHOUN 8, WOODLAND 1 Scoring eight runs across the final two innings in Thursday night’s second game at Woodland, Calhoun defeated the Lady Cats 8-1. The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the top of the sixth and added five more runs in the final frame. Michiah Hicks had two hits for Woodland including a triple. Cassie Jones and Jessica Ryan added one hit each. Dylynn Motes contributed one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Following the doubleheader split, Calhoun is now 8-8 overall and 6-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. CARTERSVILLE 9, HIRAM 1 Cartersville pitcher, McKinley Chada, tossed a two-hitter in Thursday night’s first game at Atco Park as the Lady Canes beat visiting Hiram in six innings, 9-1. Chada walked one and struck out five while earning the pitching win. Layne Callan and Ava Perkins both had three hits to lead the Hurricanes’ offense. Callan drove in two runs. Perkins’ hits included a double and one RBI. Mikey Lewis (2 RBIs) and Campbell Rogers (RBI) finished with two hits each. Amelia Elrod (RBI) and Jordan Bishop added one hit apiece. CARTERSVILLE 11, HIRAM 1 In Thursday night’s second game, the Hurricanes took down the Hornets 11-1 in five innings. Cartersville pitcher Kennedy Stevens limited Hiram to only two hits and three walks while fanning four. BLESSED TRINITY 7, CASS 4 Cass held a 3-2 lead heading to the fourth inning, but the visiting Lady Titans scored five runs over the next two frames to defeat the Lady Colonels in Thursday’s first game, 7-4. Cass out hit Blessed Trinity eight to five, but also committed five errors contributing to six unearned runs. Rachael Lee suffered the pitching loss allowing just one earned run on five hits and four walks. Lee struck out three. Alexis Woods had four hits to lead the Cass offense. Rachael Lee had two hits and drove in three runs. Saydee Najarro and Kelly Young contributed one hit each. Eryn Lee had one RBI. CASS 13, BLESSED TRINITY 1 The Cass bats pounded out a dozen hits in just four innings in Thursday night’s second game at the Cass Athletic Complex as the Lady Colonels topped Blessed Trinity, 13-1. Cass scored in each frame building a 5-1 lead through three innings and then ended the contest early by scoring eight times in the fourth inning. Alexis Woods (4 IP, 1ER, 6H, 0BB, 0K) picked up the pitching win for the Colonels working all four innings in the circle. Woods (3 RBIs), Darianna Sosa (triple, 2 RBIs), Rachael Lee (2 RBIs), and Saydee Najarro had two hits each for Cass. Reese Howard (double, RBI), Ansley Hight (RBI), Eryn Lee, and Kelly Young added one hit apiece. Haylee Dishmon drove in one run. The doubleheader split leaves Blessed Trinity with a 7-4 record overall and now 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (5-6, 3-5) will square off with Adairsville Saturday at 9 a.m. in the opening round of the Bartow County Championship Tournament.

The Cartersville and Adairsville softball teams both picked up region wins Wednesday evening on the road. Cartersville defeated Hiram 12-2 while Adairsville blanked North Murray, 9-0. CARTERSVILLE 12, HIRAM 2 Cartersville softball used an eight-run third inning Wednesday night to race past host Hiram 12-2 in a Region 7-AAAAA game. The Lady Canes had five hits and took advantage of two Hornets’ errors in the inning to take an 8-0 lead. Ava Perkins had three hits including a double and one RBI to pace the Cartersville offensive attack. Mikey Lewis followed with two hits and two RBIs. McKinley Chada and Amelia Elrod both finished with two hits and one RBI each. Jordan Bishop drove in two runs with one hit. Erin McCrary had one hit and one RBI. Campbell Rogers added a hit and Reese Dumas was credited with one RBI. Kiley Arnold collected the pitching win for the Hurricanes with a five inning performance. She alowed a pair of earned runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning six. The loss drops Hiram to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in region play. Cartersville (6-7, 2-4) will host a doubleheader with Hiram Thursday and plays Woodland in an 11 a.m. opening round game of the Bartow County Tournament Saturday at the Cass Athletic Complex. ADAIRSVILLE 9, NORTH MURRAY 0 Adairsville pitchers Chelsea Bates and Jordan Clay combined for a four-hit shutout Wednesday night as the Lady Tigers won at North Murray, 9-0. Bates struck out four while scattering three hits and a walk in the first three innings. Clay gave up just one hit over the final two frames. Adairsville scored single runs in the first and second innings, then added seven more in the fourth inning to put the Mountaineers away. Riley Mounger (2 RBIs), Jenna Young (2 RBIs), Alissa Winter (RBI), and Taylor Evans had two hits each for the Tigers. Makayla Wade, Halle Chasen (RBI), and Kelsey Gleason (RBI) rounded out the Adairsville 11-hit attack. The loss dropped North Murray to 5-10-1 on the season and 1-8 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-6, 3-4) opens the Bartow County Tournament Saturday at Cass against the host Lady Colonels at 9 a.m.

The Adairsville volleyball team celebrated its 2021 seniors Tuesday night with a pair of three-set wins over visiting Woodland and Coahulla Creek. The Tigers won the opening set with Woodland 25-19 before the Lady Cats responded to win the second set 25-20. Adairsville then won the deciding third set 15-6. Lexie Childers had three kills, three assists, three digs, and a pair of blocks in the win over Woodland. Madison Flemons contributed 11 digs. Richlyn Blair finished with eight kills and two service aces. Autumn Henderson totaled five assists. Kaylee Jordan had three aces and Haley Stiles finished with two blocks. Against Coahulla Creek, the Lady Tigers won the first set 25-21, dropped the second set 25-22, and came back to win the final set 15-6. Jordan accumulated four service aces, two kills, two digs, and a block. Annie McCormick had five digs, three assists, and one ace. Henderson finished with five kills and a block. Blair totaled five kills and an ace. Bailey Weaver contributed nine digs and one kill. Childers and Yatorrean Hale combined for eight assists. Stiles had a pair of kills and Flemons added two digs and an assist. With Tuesday’s wins, Adairsville improves to 11-4-1 on the season and travels to Temple for another non-region match Thursday night.

McKENNA TRAPHEAGEN -- Georgia Tech (So., Woodland HS) — The two-time individual state champion finished 18th overall out of 87 competitors Friday in the Kennesaw State Opener. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS)… not only qualified for the Bulldogs’ first tournament of the Fall schedule, but placed 31st individually at The Carmel Cup played on the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links last weekend. Brumlow, who had the fourth lowest total for UGA, shot rounds of 74-73-72 on the 6,828-yard par 72 course. Oklahoma State won the tournament at 18-under-par finishing one shot ahead of rival Oklahoma. Georgia shot a team total of even par and placed sixth of eight teams. Next for the Bulldogs is the Scenic City Collegiate played on The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. SOCCER RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Jr., Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… In three starts as goalkeeper this season, the Maryland transfer has a shutout over Drexel and five cumulative saves in losses at Penn State and at home against Georgetown. The Orange lost at Penn State 3-0 and to Georgetown 1-0. Shealy did not play in a Syracuse 2-0 win over Niagra Sunday night. Syracuse (2-2) travels to Charlottesville to open ACC play Friday night at Virginia.

North Atlanta won the team competition with 32 points. Cartersville (77), Woodland (79), Creekview (83), and Kennesaw Mountain (126) completed the top five in the 12-team field of 112 individual runners at Saturday’s 15th annual Run at the Rock hosted by Woodland. The Canes had all five scoring runners finish in the top 30 and the Wildcats had five runners in the top 25. Sam Peters (5th, 17:12) led Cartersville followed by Levi Booth (13th, 18:11), Malachi Vosburgh (14th, 18:12), Cainen Crowder (16th, 18:20), and Paul Hyman (29th, 19:01). Woodland was paced by Tyler Jones (4th, 17:04). McKinley Chappell (8th, 17:36) was next for the Wildcats. John Forsyth (19th, 18:38), Kain Tanturri (23rd, 18:47), and Landon McSwain (25th, 18:51) rounded out the Woodland scoring five. Cass finished ninth and was led by a 35th place finish by Critton Gearhart (19:29). The rest of the top five for the Colonels included: Jake Wright (38th, 19:35), Adam Pierce (52nd, 20:16), Leonardo Galeana (61st, 20:52), and Sawyer Foy (65th, 21:21) Ryan McKee of Kennesaw Mountain won 16:45.19 The Cartersville girls placed fourth of nine teams and were the only local team in the race. McKinsey Spinks (10th, 22:29) was the top finisher for the Lady Canes. She was followed by Kaylana Pennington-Brooke (18th, 23:35), Samantha Herrera (20th, 23:57), Elizabeth Nelson (26th, 24:26), and Meredith Gaines (27th, 24:27). North Atlanta won the girls championship followed by Creekview and North Cobb. Katelynn Dollar of Lyndon Academy won the individual girls race in 19:06.07.

The Woodland softball team finished 1-2-1 in games over the weekend in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash Tournament while Cartersville split games in Cherokee County Saturday against Creekview and Cherokee. Both teams will return to region action during the coming week. HILLGROVE 2, WOODLAND 1 The Hawks edged Woodland 2-1 Friday night in a pitching duel where both teams were limited to only five hits each. Natalie Paolino and Lindsey Feyerabend combined for 11 strikeouts in the pitching circle for Hillgrove. Lainey Baker pitched all five innings for Woodland and struck out seven. The Hawks scored single runs in the first and third innings to lead 2-0. The first inning run scored on an infield error. The second run scored on a base hit by Reina Checo. Woodland scored its run in the fourth inning on a base hit, a walk, and an infield error by the Hawks. Baker, Jordan Hammonds, Mackenzie Araya, Peyton Dorn, and Jessica Ryan contributed the Lady Cats’ base hits — all singles. WOODLAND 7, CREEKVIEW 7 Woodland and Creekview played to a five-inning 7-7 stalemate Friday night as part of the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash Tournament. The two teams combined for 22 hits in the time limit, abbreviated game. Four Wildcats had two hits each, including Michiah Hicks who hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Lainey Baker had two hits including a double and two RBIs. Cassie Jones drove in a run with her two hits that included a double while Jordan Hammonds also chipped in with two base hits. Dylynn Motes had a double and one RBI with Alana Carnes also tossing in a base hit. Peyton Dorn (5 IP, 7R, 5ER, 12H, 0BB, 0K) took care of the pitching duties for Woodland receiving no decision. WOODLAND 6, CAMPBELL 5 The Lady Cats scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and carried a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning Saturday before the game turned into a nail-biter. The Spartans scored three times in the top of the seventh to knot the scoare at 5-all, but Jordan Hammonds singled for Woodland to start the bottom of the frame, stole second, and scored the walk-off winning run when Cassie Jones reached on an infield error. Hammonds finished with two hits and one RBI. Dylynn Motes smacked a three-run home run for the Wildcats in the fifth inning. Jones contributed one hit and one RBI while Alana Carnes, Bailey Sakacsi, and Mackenie Araya added one hit apiece. Jones earned the pitching win with a complete game effort. She gave up five runs (three earned) on 12 hits with no walks. Jones struck out two in seven innings. ALLATOONA 8, WOODLAND 0 Woodland fell behind 2-0 early, but it was a five-run fourth inning that gave Allatoona full control on the Buccaneers way to an 8-0 shutout over the Wildcats Saturday. Allatoona pitcher, Payton O’Connor, kept Woodland off the scoreboard and only allowed two walks and one single while earning the win. She fanned nine. Lainey Baker (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 7K) suffered the pitching loss for the Lady Cats. Peyton Dorn (1 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 1BB) also pitched for Woodland. Cambrie Carrington had the only Woodland hit. Woodland (4-9-2) returns to Region 7-AAAAA action Thursday by hosting Calhoun for a doubleheader. CARTERSVILLE 12, CHEROKEE 10 The Canes scored three times in the top of the seventh Saturday for a come-from-behind 12-10 win at Cherokee. Layne Callan and Kiley Arnold both had RBI singles in the seventh to go with three errors by the Warriors to plate the go-ahead runs. Arnold finished with three hits including a double and five RBIs. Callan, along with McKinley Chada had two hits and two RBIs each. One of Chada’s base hits was a triple. Marly Pruitt and Mikey Lewis had two hits each for the Canes. Campbell Rogers drove in a run with a double. Ava Perkins, Reese Dumas, and Jordan Bishop added one hit apiece. Chada (6.1 IP, 1ER, 6H, 3BB) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville. CREEKVIEW 11, CARTERSVILLE 1 In the Lady Canes second game Saturday, Creekview raced to an 11-1 lead in the first three frames and held on to close out the contest in five innings. The Grizzlies out hit Cartersville 14 to 4. Campbell Rogers, Kiley Arnold, McKinley Chada, and Ava Perkins had one hit each for the Hurricanes. Cartersville (5-7) returns to Region 7-AAAAA play Wednesday at Hiram at 5:30 p.m. and will host the Hornets in a doubleheader Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
