The Woodland boys and girls tennis teams both won one of three matches Friday and Saturday at the Southwest DeKalb High School Panther Invitational in Decatur. The Woodland boys team finished fourth by defeated Southwest DeKalb Friday night before suffering losses to Union Grove and Tucker Saturday. The Wildcats lost 5-0 to Union Grove and 3-1 to Tucker. Mason Tucker had the lone Woodland win of the day at Line 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, against his Tucker opponent. The Woodland girls finished seventh and were also 1-2 at the Panther Invitational. The Lady Cats defeated host Southwest DeKalb Saturday 3-0 for their lone tournament win. Woodland won all three singles lines against the Panthers. Eryn Gentry, Emma Savage, and Abbi Spaulding each won 8-0 to secure the victory. The Lady Cats lost 5-0 to Wheeler earlier in the day and fell to Westlake Friday night. The Woodland tennis teams will host region foe Blessed Trinity Tuesday, travel to Cartersville Thursday, and host Adairsville Friday.

Georgia Highlands swept a Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday in Douglas winning 15-0 in the opener and 7-5 in the second game. GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 15, SOUTH GEORGIA 0 Johnny Dow dominated on the mound and the Chargers’ offense overpowered South Georgia in the opening game, 15-0. Dow pitched a complete-game, four-hitter without a walk and struck out eight in seven innings. Meanwhile, the Georgia Highlands offense pounded out 21 hits and scored in every offensive frame except the fifth. David Smith went 5-for-5 with two doubles. Connor Todaro was 4-for-5 with one RBI. Palmer Sapp finished with three hits and three RBIs. Trenton Parker doubled twice and drove in two runs. Joe Sutton had two hits with one RBI and Trace Twardoski contributed a pair of hits with five RBIs. Omar Daniels, Gavin Harmon (RBI), and Max Kops (2 RBIs) rounded out the offensive production in the opening game with one hit each. GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 7, SOUTH GEORGIA 5 The second game of the day was close throughout before the Chargers pulled away in the final two innings. Georgia Highlands took a 3-1 lead in the second inning but South Georgia knotted the score 3-3 in the bottom of the third. The Chargers and Hawks traded single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the score again at 5-all. Georgia Highlands’ Ben Olson smacked a solo home run to left field with one out in the eighth inning for the final go-ahead run and Joe Sutton drove home Connor Todaro in the top of the ninth for an insurance run. Five different pitchers toiled for the Chargers. Jacob Ryan started and worked the first five innings. Zack Valentine (1 IP, 1H, 1BB), Garrett Sagro (1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB, 1K), Matthew Silka (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K), and Chase Townsend (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) all worked in relief. Sutton finished with three hits and one RBI. Todaro also had three hits including a double. Olson had two hits including his solo home run. Trenton Parker contributed two hits including a double with one RBI. Palmer Sapp had two hits and two RBIs. Brandon Prince (2 RBIs) and David Smith added one hit each. The losses drop South Georgia State to 19-6 overall and 2-4 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (25-3, 4-0) will host a conference doubleheader with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday at LakePoint starting at 2 p.m.

Georgia Highlands softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at East Georgia State in Swainsboro, falling 3-2 and 5-1. In the opening game, Georgia Highlands scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game 2-2, but the Bobcats scored the game winning run in the home half of the inning on four walks — including a walk-off. In the second game, East Georgia (19-12, 4-0) scored five runs in the third inning and pitchers Madison Bussell and Tab Mimbs combined to limit the Chargers to only one unearned run on four hits. Montana Ledbetter (6.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 5BB, 9K) suffered the opening game pitching loss for GHC despite a strong effort and nine strikeouts. Maggie Schandera (2.1 IP, 5ER, 8H, 1K) was tabbed with the second game pitching loss. Madalyn Morton (3.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 5K) closed out the game for the Chargers without allowing a run. On offense, Madison Bennett had four hits including a double in the doubleheader. Three of those hits came in Game 2. Lacey Rutledge had two doubles and one RBI in the two games. Natalia Herrera had two hits including a double and one RBI. Hailey Cronic and Halie Walther added one hit each. Georgia Highlands (6-13, 1-3 GCAA) will host South Georgia State next Friday and Andrew College Sunday in doubleheaders.

The Cass Colonels swept a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader at Hiram Friday night, winning 8-3 and 9-2. Cass trailed 3-1 through four innings in the opener but scored eight unanswered runs over the final three frames to win Game 1. In the nightcap, the Colonels pounded out 11 hits in the game and tallied six runs in the fourth inning on their way to an eventual 9-2 victory. Chase Botts (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win in the first game in relief of starter Trey Scott (3 IP, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 7K). Aidan Cottingim (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 1K) and Jayden Smith (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) closed out the final two shutout frames. Jordan Gani (7 IP, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 11K) tossed a complete-game, four-hitter in the nightcap to earn the victory on the mound. He walked two and struck out 11. The Colonels enjoyed a balanced hitting attack in the doubleheader with nine players finishing the night with at least two hits each. Nic Wallin and Matt Shook led the way with three hits apiece. Wallin drove in four runs and Shook had a pair of RBIs. Kyle Miller (3 RBIs), Bentley Markley (2 RBIs), Aidan Larkin (RBI), Carson Hill (RBI), Jordan Gani, Matt Ballas, and Jayden Smith all had two hits on the night. Cass (5-10, 4-1) hosts the Hornets to complete the three-game region series Monday at 5:55 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 6, CALHOUN 1 The Class 5A 3rd-ranked Canes used a five-run fifth inning in Friday night’s second game to defeat 6th-ranked Calhoun, 6-1. The win secured the series win for Cartersville, two games to one. Cartersville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by C Bonner, but it was a productive fifth inning that made the difference after Calhoun tied the game in the third. In the Canes’ fifth inning, two walks and two hit batsmen forced in a run for a 2-0 lead. Then a two-RBI single by B Sutton and a pinch hit, two-RBI double by Paul Gamble extended the Cartersville lead to 6-1. Cartersville starting pitcher Mason McBee (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB, 7K) earned the pitching win in the nightcap with seven strikeouts across five innings of work. Davis Williams (2 IP, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 3K) retired the final six outs — half by strikeout. CALHOUN 3, CARTERSVILLE 0 Cartersville loaded the bases in the seventh inning to threaten late, but Calhoun pitcher Bryse Ingle got a pair of groundouts to close out the game as the Yellow Jackets shutout the Canes, 3-0, in Friday’s opening game. Ingle tossed a complete-game, one-hitter to earn the victory for Calhoun. He walked two and hit a batter while fanning nine. The Yellow Jackets’ offense took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and added a run in the second frame. Back to back hits followed by a groundout pushed the first two runs across. A pair of doubles in the second inning scored Calhoun’s third run. Cartersville starting pitcher Phillip Schiltz (3 IP, 3ER, 4H, 4BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for the Canes. Silas Freeman (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and Davis Williams (1 IP, 1K) pitched in relief. The top three batters in the Calhoun order — Dante Morton, Parker Lester, and Andon Lewis — combined for five hits and three RBIs for the Yellow Jackets. Blake Sutton had the only Cartersville hit. It came in the second inning. BLESSED TRINITY 4, WOODLAND 2 The host Titans scored twice in the first inning, added an unearned run in the second, and posted an insurance run in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead in Friday’s opening game. Woodland cut the lead in half in the fifth inning, but Blessed Trinity held on for a 4-2 region win. Blessed Trinity pitchers Jake Lankie (6 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 6K) and Jackson Seng (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) combined to scatter four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Ben Hamacher, Michael Mitchler, and Jonathan Franchi had two hits each for the Titans. Hayden Grier drove in two runs with a double. Carter Heath took the pitching loss for Woodland. Heath went all six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs — three earned — while striking out four. Drew Billings doubled for the Wildcats. BLESSED TRINITY 10, WOODLAND 0 Friday night’s second game at Blessed Trinity was dominated by the Titans’ pitchers and an offense that banged out 11 hits. Blessed Trinity (11-6, 5-1 Region 7-AAAAA) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, added six more runs in the fourth, and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with three more runs. Drew Billings and Scotty Smith had doubles for the Wildcats’ offense. Chase Carson added the other Woodland base hit. Smith (3.2 IP, 7R, 2ER, 9H, 2BB, 5K) suffered the pitching loss. Nate Rosser (1 IP, 3ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K) was on the mound for the Wildcats when the game ended in the fifth. Woodland (5-11, 1-5) plays a three-game series with Cartersville starting Tuesday at Richard Bell Field at 5:55 p.m. The Wildcats will host a doubleheader next Friday. NORTH MURRAY 4, ADAIRSVILLE 0 North Murray pitcher Daniel Skojac threw a complete-game, two-hitter at Adairsville Friday night to blank the Tigers 4-0. Skojac allowed only a second inning single to Evan Sanders and a fifth inning bunt single to Conner Crunkleton to go with a pair of walks. He fanned five. Adairsville pitcher Elijah Padgett (6.2 IP, 3ER, 1H, 4BB, 9K) virtually matched Skojac most of the way. He went six and two-thirds innings and took the Tigers into the seventh inning trailing only 1-0. Padgett allowed only one hit with four walks and struck out nine. Sanders (0.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) entered in the seventh inning to retire the final out. North Murray improved to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-6, 0-1) will travel to North Murray Tuesday.

The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams completed a two-game sweep of visiting Woodland Friday night with the Lady Canes winning 3-1 and the Hurricanes collecting a 6-0 shutout. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3, WOODLAND 1 The Cartersville girls soccer team came from behind in the second half Friday night to defeat Woodland 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Following a scoreless first half, Woodland broke on top with a goal by Reagan Weightman off a Tara Gardner corner kick. The goal came in the 55th minute. Cartersville responded just 19 seconds later and ultimately finished with three unanswered goals down the stretch to earn the win. Abbey Craig scored to tie the game off an assist from Hattie Williams. The two then reversed roles with Williams finding the net off a feed from Craig for a 2-1 lead. Kendyl Anderson added the Lady Canes’ third goal. “I give Woodland all the credit,” stated Cartersville coach Chad Murray. “They played hard, but when they scored their goal it was like we flipped a switch. Our goals came in a 10 to 15 minute span once the girls found that competitive fire. I’m proud of our girls for fighting back when facing adversity, but we simply must play better with Blessed Trinity coming here Monday night.” Woodland goalkeeper Chloe Ravish made 19 saves in the loss, including some quality plays. “We played well and played hard all the way to the end,” explained Woodland coach Nicole Heiser. “This one will help us as we prepare for the challenges ahead.” Cartersville improved to 6-3-1 for the season and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (4-7-1, 1-3) plays next Friday at Cass. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 6, WOODLAND 0 The Cartersville boys scored three time in each half Friday night to defeat visiting Woodland, 6-0. Giovanni Jacobo opened the scoring for Cartersville by scoring on a header in the game’s opening two minutes. The goal came off a long throw in by Jackson Brennan. The Canes made it 2-0 in the 29th minute. Alex Rios beat an outstretched keeper for the goal after Daniel Abeja sent a nice pass through the Woodland defense. Joel Zazueta added a third, first half goal for the Hurricanes in the 32nd minute. He scored on a penalty kick after Jacobo was taken down in the box. Antonio Garcia started the Cartersville scoring in the second half when he tapped in a bobbled ball by the keeper. Rios set up the play by sending in a cross in the 50th minute. Seniors Joel Robinson and Cole Nelson added the final two goals for the Canes. Robinson scored a header goal off a Daniel Abeja corner to the backside of the box in the 66th minute. Nelson’s goal was on a penalty kick. Cartersville improved to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Canes host Northwest Whitfield Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and travel to Calhoun next Friday. Woodland falls to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Wildcats host Temple Tuesday and travel to Cass next Friday.

The Woodland boys tennis team won its opening round match at the Southwest DeKalb Panther Invitational Friday, defeating the hosts 3-2. Ian VanOrder and Mason Tucker won the top two singles lines for the Wildcats while Cayden Wade and Domenic Ciavarro won their doubles line. VanOrder won 6-2, 6-1. Tucker won 6-3, 6-2, and the Wade/Ciavarro doubles team won 6-2, 7-5. Woodland forfeited at Line 3 singles with the doubles team of Jack Gore/Javen Bowens dropping their doubles match 4-6, 3-6. The Wildcats return to action in the tournament Saturday against Tucker. WESTLAKE 3, WOODLAND GIRLS 2 The Woodland girls lost their opening match at the Panther Invitational Friday night, falling to Westlake 3-2. The Lady Cats dropped all three singles lines, but won both doubles lines. Monterya Morrow and Abi Spaulding were 6-2, 6-7, 11-9 winners. Jalyn Womack and Jolie Fannin won 6-2, 6-2. Woodland returns to action Saturday at the same event.

The Cartersville boys track and field team finished first and the Cartersville girls were second in a tri-meet held Thursday at Weinman Stadium. The Hurricanes finished with 88 points head of Kennesaw Mountain (45) and Pickens (25). The Kennesaw Mountain girls finished with 83.5 team points followed by Cartersville (47.5) and Pickens (20). Georgia Highlands softball split a conference doubleheader Thursday evening at Georgia Military College. Izzy Marcotte hit a pair of two-run home runs in the early innings and the Chargers held on late to outlast Georgia Military in the opening game. Marcotte blasted homers in the first and third innings for a 4-1 lead. Natalia Herrera was on base both times. In the fifth inning, Lacey Rutledge doubled home Marcotte and Taryn Hitchcock as the Chargers built a 6-1 advantage. Georgia Military scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and added a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh that cut the lead to 6-5. GHC relief pitcher Maggie Schandera closed out the threat however, by inducing a pair of ground ball outs to secure the one-run win. Chargers’ starting pitcher Montana Ledbetter (6 IP, 3ER, 3H, 8BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win. In addition to Marcotte’s homers and Rutledge’s two-run double, Hitchcock had two hits. Herrera, Allison Daffron, and Haley Overton added one hit apiece. In the second game of the doubleheader, Georgia Military posted six runs in the second inning and cruised to an eventual 10-2 win in five innings. Madalyn Morton (2 IP, 6ER, 4H, 2BB) suffered the GHC pitching loss. Schandera (0.1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB) and Ledbetter (1.2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 3BB, 2K) also pitched for the Chargers. The Cartersville High School varsity gymnastics team placed third overall at their first meet of the 2021 season Wednesday at Westminster in Atlanta. The host Wildcats won the meet with 102.95 points. Cartersville finished with 57.15 points. Annaston Wilson and Karley Garrison represented the Cartersville varsity with Garrison placing second in the individual all-around against 15 varsity competitors. Garrison was also third on Floor Exercise and third on Balance Beam. In the JV competition, Elizabeth Hardy was first on Beam and second on Floor and Vault. The Cartersville team is in action again next Wednesday at Pace Academy.

The Cass High School soccer teams earned shutout wins at Hiram Tuesday night and the Adairsville girls also grabbed a shutout win at home over Ringgold. CASS GIRLS 8, HIRAM 0 The Cass girls soccer team blanked Hiram Tuesday night in a Region 7-AAAAA game in Paulding County. Yecenia Hernandez and Rachael Lee split time in net with Lee making a penalty kick save in the final seconds of the game to preserve the shutout. Eight different Lady Colonels scored a goal with Victoria Torres compiling three assists and Madison Shook contributing two assists on Cass goals. Cass goals were scored by Shook, Leidi Toribio, Jaden Musacchio, Dayanara Solorzano, Rachel Ziemer, Val Vences, Hannah Komp, and Natalie Rogers. Musacchio and Dayanara Pineda added one assist each. The Cass girls (5-7, 1-2) will host Blessed Trinity in another region game Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will entertain Adairsville in a non-region match next Tuesday. CASS BOYS 6, HIRAM 0 The Colonels cruised to a 6-0 shutout at Hiram Tuesday night to pick up their second Region 7-AAAAA win of the season. Kaleb Speights scored a goal and had one assist. Magno Moreno, Alex Cabanas, Isai Romero, Alfred Chege, and Pablo Varga each added a goal. Omar Garcia contributed an assist. Cass (7-5, 2-1) hosts Blessed Trinity Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 2, RINGGOLD 0 The Adairsville Lady Tigers picked up another Region 6-AAA win and another shutout Tuesday night with a home 2-0 victory over Ringgold. Following a Ringgold foul in the 28-foot box, Megan Hardin scored for Adairsville in the 39th minute on a well placed lower corner penalty kick. The boot gave Adairsville a 1-0 lead at the intermission. The locals added an insurance goal in the first five minutes of the second half when Taylor Rhoades found the net off an assist from Kaylee Jordan. The two teams battled the rest of the way with Adairsville holding on for the two goal win. Adairsville coach David Sexauer recognized Mia Scott for her consistent work in this game at outside back. Jordan also received accolades for her intensity and great feeds through the opposing defense. “We struggled to control play in the first half,” said Sexauer. “We made some formation adjustments at halftime and matched up much better in the second half. We took better control of the middle of the field and that helped our strikers.” The loss for Ringgold dropped them to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (10-1, 5-0) plays a non-region game next Tuesday at Cass. CALHOUN 3, WOODLAND GIRLS 0 Both teams struggled with ball control on the wet turf Tuesday night, but it was Calhoun who took a 1-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Woodland Lady Cats, 3-0. The Woodland girls (4-6-1, 1-2) step out of Region 7-AAAAA play Thursday at Darlington.

Several former Canes are enjoying success on the baseball diamond at this point of their seasons. In the professional ranks, Pittsburgh Pirates southpaw Sam Howard continued to put up hitless, scoreless innings — notching his third and fourth of spring training — over the past week. Meanwhile, Anthony Seigler saw action in his first two games with the New York Yankees, recording a walk, a hit and a run scored across two brief appearances. Howard and Seigler weren't the only CHS products to shine on the diamond, as college players Mason Barnett and Preston Welchel also put together impressive weeks with their respective teams. Barnett continued his stellar start to his sophomore season, throwing seven shutout innings against Little Rock Saturday at home. The right-hander struck out nine, while allowing two hits, one walk and one hit batsman. In four games, Welchel went 4-for-10, with a two-run home run, two doubles and three runs scored for Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Pittsburgh Pirates; 8th yr. pro; Cartersville HS) — Howard made a pair of seventh-inning, relief appearances last Tuesday and Saturday, his third and fourth of the Spring. Howard retired the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees in a pair of one-inning stints last week — a 10-1 win over Atlanta and a 7-5 loss to the Yankees. The southpaw has not allowed a hit or an earned run in four innings of work. He has walked three and struck out four. Anthony Seigler (New York Yankees; 4th yr. pro; Cartersville HS) — The former first-round pick made a pair of appearances last week with the Major League club as a pinch hitter, pinch runner and designated hitter. In a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies last Thursday, Seigler was entered at designated hitter. He coaxed a walk, scored a run and struck out once. Sunday against Toronto, he entered as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and remained in the game as the DH. In the ninth inning, he singled and later scored a run, as the Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 5-1. COLLEGE BASEBALL Levi Ayers (Young Harris So., Cartersville HS) — Ayers walked one and gave up one hit in an eighth-inning appearance Saturday at Flagler College, but he also retired the third out of that inning in a 10-3 Peach Belt Conference win. Mason Barnett (Auburn So., Cartersville HS) — Barnett went seven innings, allowing only two hits, one walk and one hit batsman to earn the pitching victory, as the Tigers beat visiting Little Rock Saturday. The right-hander struck out nine. It was Barnett’s second straight start without allowing an earned run and dropped his season ERA to 0.51 in 17 2/3 innings. Auburn (11-4) was set to host Lipscomb Tuesday before starting SEC play with a three-game series this weekend at Ole Miss. Clifton Dempsey (Toccoa Falls Sr., Cartersville HS) — The Screaming Eagles’ shortstop went 3-for-12 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in a three-game series with Edward Waters College last weekend at home. In 20 starts this season and 83 plate appearances, Dempsey has a .319 batting average, with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Toccoa Falls (8-12) was scheduled to host Middle Georgia State Tuesday and entertain Talladega College Friday and Saturday in a three-game series. Jake Gooch (Central Alabama CC So., Cartersville HS) — Gooch was a combined 1-for-8 and scored one run in a home game against Wallace State-Dothan and a road game at Marion Military. The Trojans went 3-2 for the week, winning three of four at Marion Military. CACC (13-9, 3-1 Alabama Community College Conference) plays a Thursday doubleheader at Calhoun CC and hosts the same team Saturday to conclude a four-game series. Lane Griffith (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville HS) — Griffith went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a sacrifice last Wednesday in a non-conference loss at ninth-ranked Columbus State. West Georgia (7-9, 7-8) returns to Gulf South Conference play against West Alabama in a three-game series this weekend at home. Brycen Jones (Central Alabama CC Fr., Cartersville HS) — Jones retired the side in order last Tuesday in an eighth-inning appearance, as the Trojans fell 12-8 to Wallace State-Dothan at home. Despite allowing only one walk and striking out the side, he was also tagged with a tough-luck pitching loss in a sixth-inning appearance Thursday at Marion Military. Logan Nelson (Truett McConnell Fr., Cass HS) — Nelson went 1-for-2 in the Bears’ 18-4 blowout of visiting Bob Jones last Tuesday and was 0-for-3 in a start against St. Andrews (North Carolina) Saturday. Nelson is hitting .276 in 35 plate appearances this season with six RBIs. TMU (11-9, 2-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) was scheduled to play Tuesday at Montreat College and travel Friday and Saturday to Point for a three-game AAC series. Harrison Osborn (Point Jr., Cartersville HS) — In an eighth-inning relief appearance Friday, Osborn faced five batters, allowing one earned run on two hits, as the Skyhawks beat Columbia International, 15-10. Point (13-6, 7-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels Wednesday to Georgia Gwinnett College Wednesday and will host Truett McConnell Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series. Preston Welchel (Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette Fr., Cartersville HS) — Welchel went 4-for-10 across four games last week with a two-run home run, two doubles and three runs scored. Coastal split a four-game, home-and-home series with Enterprise State CC. The Sun Chiefs (10-15, 2-2 Alabama Community College Conference) were set to host Nunez CC in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday before playing a four-game series with Wallace State-Dothan Thursday and Saturday. Jordan Wilkie (Augusta Fr., Cartersville HS) — Wilkie started three of four games last week and appeared in all four, as the Jaguars went 1-3. Wilkie started at third base and went 2-for-4, with a double, a walk, a run scored and one RBI during the Jaguars’ 9-8 win over Emmanuel College last Tuesday at home. Over the weekend, he was 1-for-9 in a pair of starts at second base and one pinch-hitting appearance, as Augusta was swept in a three-game series at North Georgia. Augusta (2-9, 1-8 Peach Belt Conference) was scheduled to travel Tuesday to Emmanuel and host Francis Marion Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series. BASKETBALL DiAnthony Heathcock (Columbia International Fr., Woodland HS) — Heathcock didn’t attempt a shot in 16 minutes of action but did record two rebounds, a steal and a block in a 79-74 win over Erskine Thursday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The game represented the championship game of the National Christian College Athletic Association south region tournament. CIU will now compete in the eight-team NCCAA national championship as the No. 2 seed, with a first-round matchup against seventh-seeded Alice Lloyd Wednesday in Winona Lake, Indiana. FOOTBALL Terry Berdin (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville HS) — Berdin had a 2-yard carry during a 42-14 win over St. Andrew’s Saturday at home. Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt Jr., Adairsville HS) — Burgess returned a kickoff 14 yards, as the Eagles moved to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Mid-South Conference. Kurtis Feanny (Lenoir-Rhyne Jr., Woodland HS) — Feanny made the participation report in a season-opening 27-20 win Friday at Newberry. Sean Holton (Davidson Sr., Cartersville HS) — Holton made two solo stops, as Davidson edged Stetson by a 26-20 final score Saturday in DeLand, Florida. Jacob Potter (Kennesaw State Jr., Adairsville HS) — The Owls long snapper contributed in a 24-19 triumph over Charleston Southern Saturday in Kennesaw. Matthew Surrett (Olivet Nazarene Fr., Cartersville HS) — Surrett helped No. 25 Olivet Nazarene’s offense produce 381 yards, and he also chipped in with a tackle off an interception in a 31-27 win over St. Francis Saturday at home. Jake Walker (Furman Sr., Cartersville native, Darlington HS) — Walker saw action but didn’t record any stats in 15th-ranked Furman’s 17-13 victory Saturday at East Tennessee State. SOCCER Russell Shealy (Syracuse R-So., Cartersville native, Darlington HS) — Shealy made three saves in a 3-1 defeat Friday at Louisville. SOFTBALL Colbi Ballard (Shorter So., Cartersville HS) — Ballard started all three games of the Hawks’ series at West Alabama last weekend. She was 1-for-4 at the plate with three walks and scored one run, as Shorter lost all three games in the Gulf South Conference series. Shorter (4-13, 0-9) travels to Mississippi College for a three-game conference series Saturday and Sunday. Presly Edwards (Wesleyan So., Cartersville HS) — Edwards was 3-for-13 with a double in a four-game series Saturday and Sunday at Huntingdon College. The Wolves won the opening game 6-4, but they dropped the final three games in the series. Wesleyan (3-11, 1-1 USA South Athletic Conference) hosts a four-game conference series this Saturday and Sunday with Brevard College. Brianna Hill (Covenant Fr., Woodland HS) — Hill went 3-for-7, scored a run, and drove in one run as the Scots split a doubleheader with visiting Emory last Thursday. Hannah Todd (Kansas Sr., Cartersville HS) — Playing in the Rock Chalk Challenge, Todd faced four batters and retired the last two outs last Thursday in a 6-3 loss to South Dakota State. Todd allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one in the appearance. Kansas (11-8) will host the Jayhawk Invitational this Friday through Sunday, when they will face Tulsa, North Dakota State twice and South Dakota twice. Alexa Varner (Shorter Fr., Adairsville HS) — Varner saw action as a pinch runner last Friday night in a 10-2 loss at West Alabama. TENNIS Connor Gunnell (Shorter Fr., Woodland HS) — Gunnell and his doubles partner fell 6-3 on Line 2 in a 6-1 loss to Valdosta State Friday at home. Houston Medlock (Piedmont Jr., Adairsville HS) — Medlock helped Piedmont to its first win of the season against Maryville (Tennessee) Saturday at home. He won 6-2, 6-0 on Line 1 singles and 8-0 on Line 1 doubles. Last Tuesday, the former Tigers standout dropped narrow matches on Line 1 singles (7-5, 6-2) and Line 2 doubles (7-6) in a loss to Point.
