The Georgia Highlands College baseball team opened the 2020 season Friday and Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson with a three-game series sweep of visiting Chattanooga State. Chargers’ head coach Dash O’Neill also collected his 100th career coaching victory during the series. Georgia Highlands won Friday’s season opener 14-4 and completed the series sweep in a doubleheader Saturday winning 9-7 and 11-0. The Chargers pounded out 15 hits in their Friday win paced by Gavin Harmon who was 3-for-5 including a pair of home runs and four RBI. Brandon Prince also homered and was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Joe Sutton, Palmer Sapp, and Omar Daniels each finished with two hits. Ethan Underwood (7 IP, 4ER, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching victory for GHC with a complete-game effort. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Georgia Highlands built a 9-3 lead through four frames and held on for a two-run win. Trace Twardoski (4 RBI), Max Kops (RBI), and Joe Sutton had two hits each for the Chargers. David Smith homered and finished with four RBI. GHC utilized four pitchers in the win. Conner Perry (2.2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) started. Dalton Bradford (2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 4K), Stevie Szucs (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), and Jett Kern (1 IP, 1BB) took the mound for the Chargers. In the series finale’, Georgia Highlands needed only five innings to close out an 11-0 win. Johnny Dow (5 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 2K) tossed a complete-game shutout. Smith finished with three hits and a pair of RBI. Sapp had two hits including a three-run homer. Mickey Maguire (RBI), Trace Twardoski (2 RBI), Bam Thomas (RBI), Prince (RBI), and Harmon added one hit each. Georgia Highlands (3-0) will host a doubleheader Wednesday with Tennessee Wesleyan JV prior to a weekend, three-game series with Volunteer State CC Friday and Saturday. Each month, local high schools are provided opportunity to name an Elite Athlete of the Month from their varsity programs and present the information on their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3FM and AM1450, WBHF in Cartersville. Recipients for January 2020: Alex Depasquale -- Cass High School Rashard Doyal -- Excel Christian Academy Savaun Henderson -- Adairsville High School Caleb Henson -- Woodland High School Cio Seigler -- Cartersville High School Alex Depasquale is the January Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cass High School. The son of Rose and J.D. Depasquale, Alex is a senior on the Colonels wrestling team who finished his season with a 20-8 record. Due to a freak injury, Depasquale’s season was cut short. Prior to his injury, he was set to be the No. 2-seeded wrestler in his weight class and a contender to finish as a state placer. Depasquale was a two-time individual state qualifier and three time team dual state placer. He has a 3.1 GPA and is ranked in the top third of his graduating class. He plans to become an electrician following graduation. “Alex is a great young man with a huge heart and would drop everything to help someone out,” said Colonels wrestling coach D.L. Koontz. “He is a young man of high character and values and a pleasure to be around.” The Excel Christian Academy Elite Athlete of the Month for January is Rashard Doyal. Doyal is a junior guard on the Eagles’ varsity boys basketball team and the son of Amparo Villar Garcia. ECA’s leading scorer in the month of January averaging 18 points per game, Doyal’s accomplishments included a team high 31 points in a game against Mt. Zion-Carroll earlier in the month. “Rashard has been a steadying influence as a floor general,” said Excel head coach Shannon Boatfield. Not only has he been our leading scorer in January, he has consistently made plays for teammates off the dribble too.” Doyal is an outstanding student with a 4.0 GPA. ​​ The Adairsville High School January Elite Athlete of the Month is Savaun Henderson. A three-sport athlete contributing in football, basketball, and track and field, Henderson is a senior holding positions of high responsibility on each of his teams. The son of Dwayne and Alycia Henderson, Savaun was a safety and slot receiver for the Tigers’ football team; a guard on the basketball team; and participates in the 100 meter, 4x100 meter, and 200 meter with Adairsville’s track and field team. On the basketball court, Henderson is regularly assigned to defend against the opponents top offensive players. In that role, he has consistently kept his man below their season average. Meanwhile, he has still managed to average eight points and more than two assists per game during the season. He also scored a career high 25 points recently in the Tigers’ home win over Pickens County. “Savaun is a model of consistency athletically, academically, and from a leadership standpoint,” noted Tigers’ head basketball coach Alex Disbrow. “As a coach, we always know what we are going to get from Savaun. He plays great defense, timely offense, and gives us outstanding leadership on the floor.” Adairsville football offensive coordinator Pat Konen also commented on Henderson’s contributions. “Savaun is everything a coach would want in his athlete,” said Konen. “He works extremely hard and is very coachable. If you could coach a whole team of Savauns, you simply wouldn’t lose.” Defensive coordinator Jon Cudd agreed. “Savaun has been a joy to coach. He tries to accomplish all the little things, leads by example, and is a true teammate.” Adairsville Athletic Director Meredith Barnhill also commented, “ Savaun is a shining example of what it means to be a Tiger. He excels in the classroom, in the weight room, and on his field of choice. He will be missed at AHS, but his future potential is unlimited.” Henderson has a 3.41 GPA. He plans to attend college to study sports medicine. Woodland High School’s January Elite Athlete of the Month is Caleb Henson. A sophomore wrestler on the Wildcats’ state championship team, he is the son of David and Tai Henson. Henson is currently ranked as the No. 6 wrestler in the nation and earlier this season defeated the No. 3 ranked wrestler and University of Iowa commit, Bretli Reyna of South Dade High School. At the GHSA State Duals Championships, Henson moved up a weight class and beat two-time state champion Francis Morrisey of Veterans High School to help the Wildcats secure back-to-back state duals titles. The accomplished wrestler carries a 3.92 GPA in the classroom and as a 10th grader, his collegiate plans are undecided at this point. Cio Seigler is the January Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School. The daughter of Todd and Alysia Seigler, she is a two-sport athlete and senior for the Lady Canes’ softball and basketball teams. An infielder for the softball team, Seigler has been a tremendous contributor for the Cartersville basketball team during the 2019-20 season from her guard position. “Cio is a tremendous asset,” said Lady Canes’ basketball head coach Cindy Moore. “She is our most consistent perimeter shooter and is one of our two best defenders.” Seigler was an All-Tournament Team selection at the Adairsville Christmas Tournament and plans to attend Kennesaw State University. The five local high school basketball teams in action Friday night all lost region games in their final regular season games. MURRAY COUNTY 67, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 42 The host Lady Indians led 19-6 after one quarter, 36-20 at halftime, and 53-31 through three quarters in a 25-point win Friday night over Adairsville in Chatsworth. Mattie Nuckolls led Murray with 21 points. Jordan Swanson and Ella Boston followed with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Adairsville was led by Lexie Childers with eight points. Alexa Varner, Alexia Crisp, Ji’Leyah Mitchell, and Autumn Henderson all scored six points for the Lady Tigers. The Murray County girls head into next week’s Region 6-AAA Tournament with a 9-16 overall record. The Lady Indians were 6-10 in region games. Adairsville (5-20, 2-14) will play Haralson County Monday at 6 p.m. in the tournament play-in round at North Murray High School. MURRAY COUNTY 55, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 47 The Murray County boys locked up the third-seed heading into the Region 6-AAA Tournament with a 55-47 victory over Adairsville Friday night. Adairsville was led in scoring by T.J. Printup with nine points. Murray County finished the season with an 18-6 mark and completed the region slate 11-5. The Tigers (10-14, 6-10) placed sixth in Region 6-AAA and will begin the tournament Tuesday at North Murray High School against No. 7-seed Coahulla Creek. VILLA RICA 62, WOODLAND GIRLS 21 Villa Rica’s Aliyah Hindsman made five three-pointers Friday night at Woodland and finished with 25 points in a 62-21 victory. Villa Rica (20-5, 11-5) led 36-12 at halftime and were up 54-14 by the end of the third quarter. Senior Carli Clymer led Woodland with nine points. Woodland (4-20, 2-14 Region 7AAAAA) will host Paulding County Monday night at 6 p.m. in a play-in game for the region tournament. VILLA RICA 75, WOODLAND BOYS 35 The Villa Rica boys secured the No. 4 seed for the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament Friday night with a 75-35 win at Woodland. DiAnthony Heathcock and K.J. Rogers led Woodland with 14 points each. Villa Rica (18-7, 9-7) will square off with Cass Tuesday in the region tournament quarterfinals. Woodland (2-23, 0-16) will host Rome Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in a play-in game for the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament. BOWDON 78, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 48 Rayshawn Womack scored a game-high 26 points for Excel Friday night at Bowdon, but it was not enough in a 78-48 loss in Carroll County. The host Red Devils led 21-9 after one quarter, 38-22 at the intermission, and 50-39 by the end of the third quarter before pulling away for a 30-point win. Kalil Holley and Brenden Quillin added eight and seven points, respectively, for the visiting Eagles. Bowdon was led by Kiregus Vaughn with 14 points. A.J. Johnson followed with 13 and Tray Wyatt scored 12 for the Red Devils (14-11, 6-8). Excel finished the 2019-20 season with a 3-22 overall record and a 2-12 mark in Region 6-A.

The Cass and Cartersville girls along with the Adairsville boys were winners Tuesday night in region basketball action across the area. CASS GIRLS 45, HIRAM 30 The Lady Colonels avenged a January 3 overtime loss at Hiram Tuesday night with a 45-30 win over the visiting Lady Hornets. Cass led the whole way with a 9-5 lead after one period, 27-19 lead at halftime, and a 36-21 advantage through three quarters. Claire Davis paced Cass with 16 points and Londaisha Smith followed with 10. Irmani Smith was the top scorer for Hiram (13-11, 8-7) with 10 points. Cass finished the regular season with a 17-8 mark and 8-8 record in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Colonels will now prepare for their opening region tournament game next week. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 33, CHAPEL HILL 29 Lehla Thomas led the Lady Canes with 11 points and six rebounds as Cartersville won at Chapel Hill Tuesday night, 33-29. The host Lady Panthers led 8-4 after one quarter and 15-9 at halftime before Cartersville grabbed a 24-21 lead through three quarters. Ariana Cochran followed with six points for Cartersville. Cio Seigler added five while Naijah Evans, Alexia Henderson, and Miya Moore added three points each. Moore hauled in five boards. Savannah Howard led the Panthers with 17 points. The loss dropped Chapel Hill to 10-13 overall and 3-7 in Region 5-AAAA. Adairsville senior Savaun Henderson scored a career high 25 points Saturday to help lead the Tigers to a 60-50 win over visiting Pickens. The Dragons led 17-14 after one quarter, 29-26 at halftime, and were up 43-38 heading into the fourth quarter before Adairsville rallied for a 10-point non-region win. The Tigers outscored Pickens 22-7 in the final eight minutes. T.J. Printup also reached double-figures for Adairsville with 15 points. Tucker Deams and Courtney Slocum chipped in six apiece while William Longmore and Jaxon Welchel added four each. Pickens (16-9) was led by Noah Sutton’s 21 points. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37, LAGRANGE 34 The Lady Canes earned a Region 5-AAAA victory Friday night at the Storm Center over visiting LaGrange, 37-34. Cartersville led 13-11 after one quarter and 21-20 at the intermission before LaGrange tied the game by the end of the third quarter, 28-28. Naijah Evans led the Hurricanes and all scorers in the game with 14 points. Miya Moore followed with six points. Lehla Thomas added four points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Alexia Henderson and Cio Seigler also scored four each. Kiera Millne finished with three and Ariana Cochran added two points. LaGrange was led by Corriah Williams with nine points. Kolbe Benham made two free throws with three-tenths of a second remaining to lift to Hurricanes to a one-point win. Benham was fouled on an 80-foot desperation shot attempt.
