Adairsville softball started its region schedule in quality form Thursday night with a 4-0 home win over the North Murray Mountaineers. Pitcher Victoria O’Neal tossed a complete-game shutout, doubled twice, and drove in a run in the victory. O’Neal needed only 83 pitches in her seven innings of work and scattered three hits and a pair of walks to earn the victory in the circle. She fanned eight Mountaineers. Adairsville third baseman Sadye Johnson got things started for the Tigers on offense with a first inning solo home run. She scored again in the fourth inning on one of O’Neal’s doubles and Adairsville added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Alexa Varner and Alyssa Jarrett added the other Lady Tigers’ base hits. The loss drops North Murray to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (2-3, 1-0) opens play in the Dalton Lady Cat Classic Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Heritage-Catoosa.

Woodland softball scored seven runs in the first two innings Thursday night for a come-from-behind victory over visiting Cartersville, 10-6. The Lady Canes struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning before Woodland answered with three in the first and four more in the second inning. The Lady Cats added three more runs in the fourth inning and Cartersville rallied for three of their own in the sixth but came up four runs short. Lainey Baker (7 IP, 6R, 3ER, 9H, 4BB, 8K) went the distance in the circle for Woodland to pick up the pitching win. Ava Perkins (1.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 3BB), Kiley Arnold (1.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 7H, 1BB), and McKinley Chada (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB) all pitched for Cartersville. Hope Short and Lauren McElhaney had three hits each to pace the Lady Canes’ offense. Short’s hits included a double and one RBI. McElhaney had a pair of doubles and three RBI. Anna Kate McElhaney, Campbell Rogers, and Chada contributed one hit each. Ava Perkins and Mattie Johnson both drove in a run. Three Wildcats finished with two hits each including Hannah Miller with two RBI, Kendyl Hardin with three RBI, and Bella Carnes. Woodland (2-1, 1-1 in 7-AAAAA) hosts region opponent Kell Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. LADY COLONELS WIN 2ND STRAIGHT Cass softball has now won two straight region games following Thursday night’s 9-2 come-from-behind win at Kell. The Lady Colonels defeated Rome Tuesday night after opening the season with a home loss to Villa Rica. All three games to start the season for Cass have been Region 7-AAAAA contests. Thursday night Kell led 2-0 after one inning. That score stood until Cass scored five times in the sixth inning and added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh for their seven-run win. The Lady Colonels out hit the Longhorns eleven to five. Meanwhile, Cass starting pitcher Rachael Lee (7 IP, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 2HBP, 1K) kept the Longhorns in check by tossing six consecutive scoreless innings after falling behind to earn a complete-game win. Ansley Hight led the Colonels’ offense with two hits including a double and four RBI. Lee had two hits and one RBI. Eryn Lee also tossed in a pair of hits. Kylee Hembree (RBI), Macenzie Dougharty (RBI) Hailie Owens, and Alexis Woods added one hit apiece for Cass. With the loss, Kell is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in region action. Cass (2-1, 2-1) hosts county rival Woodland in yet another Region 7-AAAAA contest next Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville volleyball swept its home opener Thursday night at the Storm Center defeating Bremen and Villa Rica — both in straight sets. Cartersville beat Bremen 25-22 and 25-7 before outlasting Villa Rica 25-22 and 25-22. In the win over Bremen, the Lady Canes actually found themselves down by ten before battling back. “We are still dealing with some inconsistency and it put us in a deep hole in the first set,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “The girls showed a lot of heart to come back and we were much sharper in the second set. We reduced our mistakes and that is what it will take to win matches this season.” Anna Grace Brock had 11 kills in the win over Bremen. She added five aces and 11 digs. Lauren Wenzell totaled ten kills, three aces, and a dozen digs. Halle Matthews had six kills and four blocks while Macey Vaughn added 25 assists. The nightcap with Villa Rica was a back-and-forth battle with the lead changing hands often throughout. “The match with Villa Rica was tough,” said Cothran. “We dealt with some gamesmanship on their part, but the girls used it as motivation and took care of business.” Brock had ten kills, ten digs, and three aces against the Wildcats. Wenzell finished with nine kills, 12 digs, and two aces. Vaughn added 18 assists. The Lady Canes (4-6) host Rome and McEachern Monday night at 5 p.m. in the Storm Center. WOODLAND WINS TWICE The Woodland High volleyball team picked up a pair of non-region wins Thursday evening at home, beating both Chattooga and Murray County in comfortable sweeps. In the first match against Chattooga, Woodland won 25-20 and 25-9. Emmalee Cigainero had two aces, four kills and three digs against Chattooga; Caroline Gore had eight kills and four digs; Grace Webb had three kills, three digs and an ace; and Sydney Molinaro had four kills, 14 assists, four digs and an ace. The second match against Murray County was more of the same, with Woodland winning 25-18 and 25-14. Webb had six kills, five blocks and four digs in that match; Molinaro added three kills, seven assists, four digs and two aces; and Cigainero had nine digs and two aces. Woodland returns to action on Tuesday at home against Model and Haralson County.

Cartersville pitchers Ava Perkins and Kiley Arnold combined on a three-hitter Wednesday evening as the Lady Canes defeated Adairsville 4-1 in a non-region matchup. Perkins did not allow a hit, but walked five in the first two innings as Adairsville took a 1-0 lead. Perkins also struck out three. Arnold, who picked up the pitching win, took care of the final five innings in the circle for Cartersville and did not allow a run while scattering three hits. Arnold did not issue any walks. Trailing by a run, Cartersville scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Lady Canes then added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning to help secure the win. Lauren McElhaney led the Canes’ offense with three hits including a triple. AnnaKate McElhaney finished with two hits including a double and two RBI. McKinley Chada drove in two runs and had one hit. Rylie Harris, Elizabeth Nelson, and Hope Short had the other Cartersville base hits. Victoria O’Neal and Taylor Rhoades split the pitching duties for Adairsville. O’Neal (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 7K) started and suffered the pitching loss. Rhoades (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 2K) worked the final nine outs for the Tigers. O’Neal had two hits. Kyleigh Linn added the other Adairsville base hit. The loss drops Adairsville to 1-3 on the season. The Lady Tigers open play in Region 6-AAA Thursday against North Murray. The Cartersville and Cass volleyball teams both split matches in tri-meets Tuesday night. Cartersville lost a straight sets match at Northwest Whitfield but swept two sets against North Murray. Cass, hosting Armuchee and Calhoun, won a three-set match with the Indians but were swept by the Yellow Jackets. In Cartersville’s loss to Northwest Whitfield, the Bruins won 25-17 and 25-16. Lauren Wenzell finished with eight kills, three aces, and eight digs. Anna Grace Brock contributed six kills, three aces, and seven digs. Halle Matthews had four kills and four blocks, while Macey Vaughn added 19 assists. In the Canes’ 25-12, 25-14 win over North Murray, Wenzell had eight kills and six aces. Brock finished with five kills and four aces while Vaughn issued 17 assists. “We battled hard and kept our energy up for the most part against Northwest, but in the second set we really struggled in serve receive. We fell behind 0-10 and that’s way too much to overcome against a good team like the Bruins,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We were pretty sharp against North Murray and I was proud of our effort,” added Cothran. “We were able to get some playing time for some of the younger players and they did well too.” Cartersville (2-6) will host Villa Rica and Bremen on Thursday. WOODLAND SWEEPS GORDON CENTRAL, DADE COUNTY Coming off a 3-2 start and a semifinal appearance in the Adairsville tournament Saturday, Woodland claimed a pair of victories Tuesday night in non-region matches in Calhoun. The Lady Cats outlasted Gordon Central 25-20, 25-20 in a straight sets win and later defeated Dade County 25-22, 25-13. Against Gordon Central, Caroline Gore had nine kills and two aces. Lauren Morris also had two aces, while adding 13 assists and two digs. Grace Webb posted six aces, two assists, two blocks and a kill. Sydney Molinaro finished with four kills, four digs and an ace. In the sweep of Dade County, Gore added six kills, five aces and three digs; Morris had 14 assists and five aces; and Molinaro chipped in with five kills and the same number of digs to go with a pair of aces. Woodland will host Chattooga and Murray County in a tri-match beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday. CASS SPLITS MATCHES WITH ARMUCHEE, CALHOUN In a tri-match at Cass, the Lady Colonels outlasted Armuchee 25-14, 20-25, 16-14 in a three-set non-region contest. Cass was later topped by visiting Calhoun in straight sets, 25-9 and 25-22. Cass (3-6) hosts Cedartown Monday and Pepperell on Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE FALLS TO LFO, HIRAM The Adairsville volleyball team dropped a pair of home matches Tuesday night. Facing Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in a non-region matchup, the Tigers fell 25-8, 25-20. They also fell to Hiram by a 25-16, 25-21 final score. Autumn Henderson posted two blocks against LFO and three against Hiram. Kaydee Huskins contributed three kills against the Hornets. Adairsville will face Pickens and host Sonoraville in a road tri-match Thursday.

Cass softball picked up a big region win Tuesday night at Rome High School while Cartersville suffered a 12-1 home loss to region foe Central-Carroll. Meanwhile, Woodland dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Carrollton in a rematch of last season's Region 7-AAAAA title matchup. CASS 18, ROME 7 The Lady Colonels posted runs in all five of their offensive frames on their way to an easy 18-7 win at Rome in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass led 4-2 after one inning and stretched their lead to 13-2 in the third inning before holding off the host Wolves for an 11-run victory in five innings. The Lady Colonels out hit Rome eleven to six and also took advantage of a dozen walks and a hit batsman. Cass pitcher Macenzie Dougharty (3 IP, 4R 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the win in the circle for the Colonels. Kylee Hembree (2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) took the circle for the final two innings. Kylee Hembree led the Cass offense with two hits including a double and four RBI. Eryn Lee also had a two hit game. Alexis Woods, Savannah Tatum, and Kimberly Allen each contributed a hit and two RBI. Ansley Hight and Holli Elrod tossed in one hit and one RBI each. Cass (1-1, 1-1) travels to Kell for another Region 7-AAAAA contest Thursday at 5:55 p.m. CENTRAL-CARROLL 12, CARTERSVILLE 1 The visiting Central-Carroll Lions broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning Tuesday night at Cartersville with a seven-run inning on their way to a 12-1 Region 5-AAAA win. Central added a single run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth inning to secure their eleven-run win. Cartersville’s lone run came in the fifth inning. A pair of Lions pitchers limited Cartersville to six hits in the contest and the Lady Canes’ run was unearned. McKinley Chada (3.1 IP, 6ER, 5H, 4BB) started in the circle and was tagged with the pitching loss. Kiley Arnold (2.2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 6H, 3BB, 2K) worked in relief for the Lady Canes. Gracie McKey had three hits including a double and three RBI to pace the Lions attack. Shirley Sharp and Ava Tyson combined for four more hits and three RBI for Central. Campbell Rogers and Cio Seigler both had two hits for Cartersville. One of Seigler’s hits was a double. Mikey Lewis drove in the Canes’ run with a hit and Lauren McElhaney added a double. Central improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in Region 5-AAAA. With the loss, Cartersville slips to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in region action. The Hurricanes host Adairsville Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and play at Woodland Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CARROLLTON 3, WOODLAND 1 The visiting Trojans defeated Woodland Tuesday night 3-1 in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. The two teams were tied 1-1 after two innings and Carrollton took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. The lone Woodland run came on a long, second inning home run by junior Morgan Cooper. Trojans' pitcher Olivia Fann went the distance for Carrollton in the circle to earn the win. Although the Lady Cats had some opportunities, they were not able to come up with the timely hits to drive in runs. Woodland stranded nine base runners. Carrollton improved to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in region games. Woodland (1-1, 1-1) hosts Cartersville Thursday.

Last year, Woodland and East Paulding met in a thrilling Region 7-AAAAA opener. The visiting Raiders rallied from a three-run deficit in the top of the seventh for a 10-8 victory. This time around, the Wildcats got to play the spoilers. Woodland scored runs in each of the last three innings to rally for a 6-3 win in its season opener Monday at East Paulding. With the score tied 3-all entering the seventh, the Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out, as Morgan Bailey and Hannah Miller singled around an Ansley Evans walk. Kendyl Hardin coaxed a walk to break the deadlock before Morgan Cooper was hit by a pitch to force in another run. Alyssa Motes had an RBI groundout later in the frame to hand Woodland a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the inning. Lainey Baker worked around a one-out single to finish off the Raiders. She struck out six with no walks, while allowing seven hits in a complete-game effort. East Paulding (2-3, 0-1) took the lead on Maggie O'Kelley's solo homer in the second inning. A clutch two-out, two-run single in the third put Woodland in a 3-0 hole. The Wildcats, who only had three hits on the night, started to make a comeback in the top of the fifth. Kailey Baker walked, Bella Carnes reached on an error, and then the two pulled off a double steal. That was a key play, as both players ended up scoring on Evans' sacrifice fly to pull Woodland within 3-2. The Wildcats tied the game in the sixth, when Motes doubled home Cooper. Woodland left the go-ahead run at third base that inning, but the team didn't have to wait long to make up for it. After opening the season with a thrilling come-from-behind win, the Wildcats will host Carrollton in a rematch of last year's region championship series, which Woodland won in three games. Adairsville softball put together a six-hit, fifth inning Monday night and scored all of the game’s runs in the frame on their way to their first win of the year -- a 5-0 blanking of visiting Coosa. Adairsville and Coosa battled through four and one-half scoreless innings before the Lady Tigers scored five times in the eventful fifth inning. That would be more than enough run production for Adairsville pitcher Taylor Rhoades (7 IP, 0R, 6H, 1BB, 6K) who tossed a complete game shutout. Katie Smith had a three-hit game including a double for the Tigers’ offense. Chloe Souders and Sadye Johnson both finished with two hits and one RBI. Rhoades contributed a pair of hits. Victoria O’Neal had a double and two RBI. Alyssa Jarrett also drove in a run with one hit. The loss evens Coosa’s record at 2-2. Adairsville (1-2) plays at Cartersville Thursday. VILLA RICA 11, CASS 6 Villa Rica surged to an 8-3 lead with a six-run third inning Monday night on their way to an 11-6 Region 7-AAAAA victory at Cass. The Lady Colonels led 3-2 after two innings, but the big inning by the Wildcats turned out to be the difference in the contest. Cass scored three runs in the fifth inning to narrow the margin to 8-6, but Villa Rica added three insurance runs of their own in the seventh inning to close out their five-run win. Both teams finished with ten hits. Torree Wofford started in the circle for Villa Rica and earned the pitching win. Brionna Costello closed out the final six outs for the Wildcats. Macenzie Dougharty (2.1 IP, 8R, 6ER, 6H, 2BB) and Kylee Hembree (4.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) split the Cass pitching duties. Dougharty was saddled with the loss. Madi Langford, Jazlyn Perry, and Addie Orr combined for six hits and four RBI hitting in the three-, four-, and five-spots for Villa Rica. Alexis Woods led Cass at the plate with two doubles, a triple, and two RBI in four plate appearances. Ansley Hight (RBI) and Kylee Hembree had two hits each. The pro baseball update for players with Cartersville/Bartow County connections: ELLIOTT ANDERSON -- Burlington Royals (1st yr. pro; LHP; Rookie Advanced Appalachian League; Kansas City Royals' organization; Auburn; Cartersville HS)... Anderson made two appearances last week, one strong and one when he took the loss. He wrapped up a 6-0 win on Friday with two scoreless innings. He had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit with no walks against the Danville Braves. He got the ball three days later on Monday night against the Greeneville Reds and allowed two runs, one earned, with one strikeout. Anderson has now made 14 appearances in his first pro season and has pitched 21 1/3 innings, boasting an impressive 1.27 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and a .228 batting average against with 23 strikeouts. SAM HOWARD -- Colorado Rockies (6th yr. pro: LHP; Georgia Southern, Cartersville HS)... made one appearance on Aug. 7 in a 14-3 loss to the top team in the American League, the Houston Astros. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. For the season, at the big-league level, Howard has a 7.56 ERA with a 1.80 WHIP in 8 1/3 innings across six appearances. CONNOR JUSTUS -- Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; Infielder; Double-A Southern League; L.A. Angels' organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)... Justus started three games and went hitless in 10 at bats, but he did have a walk and a run scored. For the season with the Mobile BayBears, Justus is hitting .187 with a .290 on-base percentage and a .259 slugging percentage. LUKE SCHILTZ -- AZL Rangers (1st yr. pro; RHP; Rookie Arizona League; Texas Rangers' organization; Cartersville, GA native; Stoneman Douglas (FL) HS)... made two short appearances, one on Aug. 7 and one on Aug. 10. He pitched just a third of an inning in his first outing of the week, throwing just one pitch to get out of an inning. He then pitched just two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on just one hit, but two walks. He also struck out two in the outing. Schiltz now has a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings across nine appearances in rookie ball this season. He has struck out six, while allowing just a .171 average against and a 1.00 WHIP.

Cass and Woodland volleyball picked up wins Saturday in a busy day for local teams. CASS GOES 2-3 AT ADAIRSVILLE TOURNAMENT The Lady Colonels’ volleyball team won two of five matches Saturday at the Adairsville Welcome to the Jungle Tournament. Cass lost to Woodland 25-17, 25-17 and Kell 25-9, 25-7 in pool play that also included a 25-21, 25-20 win over the host Tigers. In bracket play, Cass defeated Sonoraville 25-21, 25-17 to reach the tournament semifinals against Kell where the Lady Colonels fell in straight sets, 25-13, 25-8. Cass hosts Calhoun and Armuchee Tuesday at 5 p.m. LADY TIGERS DROP TOURNEY MATCHES Adairsville volleyball finished 0-4 for the day as host of the Welcome to the Jungle Tournament Saturday. The Lady Tigers fell to Kell 25-7, 25-5; Cass 25-21, 25-20; and Woodland 25-21, 25-21 in pool play before dropping a tournament bracket match to Kell 25-7 and 25-11. Aaliyah Applin led Adairsville with 19 digs for the day. Autumn Henderson had eight blocks. WOODLAND WINS THREE TO REACH TOURNEY SEMIFINALS Woodland volleyball finished 2-1 in pool play at the Adairsville High School Welcome to the Jungle Tournament Saturday. The Lady Cats had wins over Cass and Adairsville, but lost to Kell in pool play. Woodland then rallied past North Murray in the quarterfinals but couldn't quite match the feat in a semifinal loss to Fannin County to finish the day with a 3-2 mark. Head coach David Condon noted inconsistency in the Lady Cats' play during the day. "I'm sure everybody experienced that," Condon said. "Hopefully, we'll iron some of those things out, working with a new rotation. We had spurts where we had really great effort and focus, and some where we didn't. We saw a lot of good things, so hopefully, we've got a lot of stuff to build on." CARTERSVILLE DROPS PAIR OF MATCHES SATURDAY The Lady Canes finished 1-3 in the 2019 Sequoyah Tournament following a pair of Saturday losses at Etowah High School. Cartersville fell in three sets to East Coweta and lost in straight sets to Hillgrove. In Saturday’s opener for the Lady Canes, East Coweta took Set 1 25-20, but Cartersville captured the middle set, 25-23. The Indians rallied in Set 3 to win the match 15-9. “I felt like we played a solid match against East Coweta,” said Canes coach Dutch Cothran. “They’re a good team and took advantage of the errors we made.” Lauren Wenzell had a dozen kills, three aces, and 11 digs in the match. Anna Grace Brock contributed ten kills, four aces, and nine digs while Macey Vaughn totaled 24 assists. The Lady Canes fell 25-20 and 25-14 to Hillgrove to close out the event. “We played hard against Hillgrove,” said Cothran. “They have about six girls taller than our tallest player and one of them was dominant. We struggled to stop her.” Againt the Hawks, Wenzell finished with eight kills, two aces, and 12 digs. Brock had ten digs and five kills while Vaughn tossed in 15 assists. “Although our record took a hit, the good news from this tournament is we saw some really good competition from bigger schools. That should help us when we face the good teams in Class AAAA. I saw a lot of things for us to work on and we’ll start that process Monday at practice,” Cothran closed. Cartersville (1-5) travels to Northwest Whitfield for a tri-match with the Lady Bruins and North Murray Tuesday. The Lady Canes will play their first home match Thursday.

Cartersville volleyball dropped a pair of matches Friday night competing in the Sequoyah Classic at Etowah High School. The Lady Canes fell to Centennial 25-20 and 28-26 in straight sets and also lost to Columbus 25-14 and 25-8. “We played well and fought hard against Centennial,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We found some things that worked for us, so I was pround of that.” “Against Columbus we played well in spurts, but struggled late,” Cothran continued. “We made too many errors. We’re growing and we’ll be fine in the long run, but give Columbus credit. They have a really good team and they played well.” Lauren Wenzell had 14 kills, three aces, and seven digs. Halle Matthews contributed six kills and three blocks, while Macey Vaughn added 19 assists. Cartersville (1-3) will face East Coweta Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Etowah High School as the tournament continues.

Cartersville volleyball started the 2019 season Thursday night with a split of matches against Class AAAAAAA opponents at North Paulding. The Lady Canes dropped their opener to North Paulding in three sets, but bounced back to win a tight, three-set match with McEachern. North Paulding won the opening set 25-19 before Cartersville won the second set by the same score. North Paulding closed out the match in the third set, 15-10. “London Moultrie and Anna Grace Brock gave us a chance in the opener,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “The first set was close until the end where we made some untimely mistakes. In Set 2, we jumped to a big lead behind a service run by Brock. Moultrie was big in that set too. In the final set, we made some service errors and some set placement mistakes.” In the win over McEachern, the Lady Canes dropped the opening set 24-26 before rallying for a 25-23 middle set win and a 15-12 victory to clinch the match. “We were up 14-3 in Set 1,” noted Cothran. “We squandered that set with a lot of inconsistency. We lacked some intensity too. We trailed 20-16 in the second set before coming back for the win and we finished off the final set with a nice little run.” Macey Vaughn led the Canes with nine assists in the opener and ten against McEachern. Moultrie had six kills against North Paulding and finished the night with ten. Brock and Lauren Wenzell contributed three aces each.
