The Woodland and Cass girls soccer teams lost road matchups Tuesday night. The Lady Cats dropped a Region 7-AAAAA contest at Paulding County while the Lady Colonels were blanked in a non-region game at Class 7A North Paulding, 9-0. PAULDING COUNTY 5, WOODLAND 2 The Lady Patriots led 2-0 at halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 5-2 victory. Jordan Evans and Grace Webb scored the two Woodland goals as the Lady Cats fell to 2-12-1 for the season. NORTH PAULDING 9, CASS 0 The Lady Colonels trailed by a single goal at halftime, but the host Wolfpack cruised in the second half to a 9-0 non-region victory. Cass (8-7-1) returns to the pitch Thursday at home against North Springs.

The Cass boys were tough-luck losers Tuesday night in a non-region game at Class 7A North Paulding, 1-0. The host Wolfpack (12-3) scored in the game’s final minute to spoil the Colonels’ road trip. Cass keeper Isai Romero was credited with a dozen saves in the loss, including several spectacular plays according to Colonels’ assistant coach E.J. Kukoly. The loss drops the Colonels to 4-10 for the year. COAHULLA CREEK 12, ADAIRSVILLE 2 The Adairsville boys also suffered a 12-2 loss in the completion of a game that was suspended March 14 and completed Tuesday night. The win by the Colts keep them one game ahead of Murray County and Calhoun in the race for the Region 6-AAA title. Adairsville captain Joseph Pacheco scored both goals for the Tigers and keeper tyrek Bryant finished with seven saves, but Coahulla Creek ended the game in the 60th minute with a mercy rule goal. The Tigers slipped to 2-10 on the season and 1-5 in region play. Adairsville travels to Trion Thursday night for a non-region match.

The Adairsville Tigers and the Cass Colonels both lost region contests Tuesday night in games moved to the LakePoint Sporting Community fields in Emerson. Adairsville dropped a 6-3 decision to Haralson County. Cass fell to Class AAAAA 4th-ranked Kell, 9-0. HARALSON COUNTY 6, ADAIRSVILLE 3 Adairsville matched Haralson County with ten hits but couldn’t overcome the visiting Rebels’ fast start in a 6-3 Region 6-AAA loss Tuesday night at LakePoint in Emerson. Haralson County scored four runs in the first two innings and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-1 lead. Adairsville threatened with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short in the three-run loss. Lane King earned the pitching win for Haralson County. He scattered nine hits and did not walk a batter in six innings of work. Andru Starling closed out the game for the Rebels in the seventh. Bryson King had three hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Haralson offense. Tucker Parish and Lane King contributed two hits. Landan Malone drove in two runs with a triple in the first inning. Starter Elijah Padgett (3.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H, 5BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. Jacob Ray (0.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB), Braden Powell (1.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K), and Eli Agnew (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) also pitched for the Tigers. B.J. KELL 9, CASS 0 A pair of Kell pitchers combined to shutout Cass and limit the Colonels to six hits in a 9-0 Region 7-AAAAA victory for the 4th-ranked Longhorns Tuesday evening at LakePoint in Emerson. Kell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added three runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 7-0 advantage. The Longhorns added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Hal Stelljes (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 8K) and Evan Hendricks (2 IP, 0R, 4H, 0BB, 1K) scattered six hits and two walks in the combined shutout. Cass starting pitcher Jayden Smith (2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) took the loss. Trey Scott (3 IP, 5R, 4ER, 2H, 6BB, 1K) and Jordan Gani (1 IP, 0R, 0H) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Woodland lost a back-and-forth Region 7-AAAAA battle at East Paulding Monday night, 6-4. The Wildcats led 1-0 early on a first inning RBI single by Scotty Smith, but the Raiders scored four runs in the third to go ahead by three. Woodland knotted the score in the top of the fifth inning on a Dallas Adams RBI single, a bases loaded walk by Koby Stansel, and Smith’s second RBI single of the game. East Paulding then regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a triple and a sacrifice fly, before adding an insurance run in the sixth on a pair of walks followed by a ground ball single and a hit batsman. The Wildcats got a leadoff single by Adams to start the seventh, but a pair of groundouts that included a double play ended the game. Brandon Haston had two hits including a triple and two RBI to lead the Raiders’ offense. Seth Grenon (5 IP, 4ER, 6H, 4BB, 7K) was the starting and winning pitcher for East Paulding. While college softball and baseball teams are in the midst of their conference schedules, the 2019 minor league baseball season got underway this past week. Former Cartersville High School pitcher Sam Howard and shortstop Connor Justus started their respective MiLB seasons with Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League and Mobile of the Southern League. Meanwhile, eighteen local college softball and baseball players made contributions with their respective programs during the week, including former Canes' southpaw Elliott Anderson (photo) who improved to 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (6th yr. pro; Colorado Rockies’ organization; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… pitched the ninth inning of the Isotopes 11-4 opening day loss April 4 to Salt Lake. Todd also worked three and two-thirds innings Friday and was tagged with the pitching loss. She yielded six earned runs on six hits and four walks in an 8-1 loss at 13th-ranked Oklahoma State. In an inning and one-third Saturday, the right-hander gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks in a 7-3 loss to the Cowgirls. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., P, Cartersville HS)… made one start last week and suffered the loss Saturday in a 9-4 defeat at Western Carolina. Yantis tossed three and one-third innings allowing six earned runs on five hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. The Bulldogs finished the week 2-2 with a pair of wins in the Western Carolina three-game series and a home loss to Belmont. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… picked up his fifth win of the season Friday by retiring all four batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings as the 22nd-ranked Tigers came-from-behind to beat visiting 12th-ranked Arkansas 6-3. Anderson improved his season mark to 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA in 27 and two-thirds innings pitched. Auburn (23-9, 7-5 SEC) dropped three of four games last week losing twice to the Razorbacks and last Tuesday to Georgia Tech. The Tigers host Jacksonville State Tuesday and play a weekend three-game SEC series at Texas A&M. LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., P, Cartersville HS)… made two appearances last week including his second pitching win last Monday in a 12-3 win at Emmanuel College JV. Ayers went four innings allowing only one earned run on two hits and a walk. He fanned four. He also worked a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts in the Chargers’ 11-8 home loss Saturday to Wallace State-Hanceville CC. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... Bonner carded a pair of 82s to finish tied for 10th at the Spartan Invitational hosted by York over the weekend. She shot nine-over on both days, as York cruised to a 25-shot win in the first-ever event, which included 10 other teams. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville native)... Gollhofer and the Cardinals routed preseason favorite Buffalo in their only matchup of the week, earning a 7-0 victory on Friday in Mid-American Conference action. Playing on Line 2 singles, Gollhofer eased to a 6-4, 6-0 win. She paired with Isabelle Dohanics for a 6-3 triumph on Line 3 doubles. With two MAC contests left to go, Ball State is in the middle of a jumbled mess in the standings. Currently 3-2 in the conference, the Cardinals are tied for fourth with Buffalo and Akron, which they will face in the regular-season finale on April 20 after a meeting with Northern Illinois (0-6 MAC) this coming Sunday. TRACK AND FIELD SPENCER FIELDS -- Rhodes College (Sr., Kingston native, Darlington HS)... Fields broke his own school record in the 10k with a time of 30 minutes, 12 seconds in the Colonial Relays, which took place last week in Williamsburg, Virginia. He finished third in the race.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team stayed hot this past weekend by winning their fifth straight and eighth game of their last nine starts with a Sunday doubleheader sweep of East Georgia State Community College at Stars Field in Cassville. The Chargers won Sunday’s opener 6-2 and took the second game 8-3. Georgia Highlands has now won nine of 12 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference games after a 2-4 start in league play. Kara Kight went 2-for-3 at the plate and tossed a complete-game in the pitching circle in the Chargers’ Game 1 win Sunday. She also earned a save in the second game with three scoreless innings of work. Kight did not walk a batter across ten innings Sunday and fanned two in the appearances as she improved to 12-5 on the year with four saves. Haley Robinson (4 IP, 3ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K) was the Game 2 pitching winner. In addition to Kight’s performance in the first game, Mya Adams was 2-for-3 including a double and two RBI. Lexi Palazzo also had a 2-for-3 game with a pair of RBI. In the second game, Kayla Laukka was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and a stolen base. Deyonce Lewis, Alexis Davis, and Palazzo also contributed two hits apiece. Georgia Highlands (20-14, 11-7) will host conference leader Georgia Military Wednesday in a doubleheader before traveling to Barnesville for a conference doubleheader at Gordon College Saturday.

Wallace State-Hanceville Community College completed a home-and-home sweep of Georgia Highlands baseball Sunday with a 15-4 home win over the Chargers. The Lions won Friday’s game at LakePoint in Emerson, 11-8. In Sunday’s victory, Wallace-Hanceville utilized two big innings for their 11-run win. The Lions plated five runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 5-1 and stretched with lead to 15-2 with an eight-run fourth inning. Easton Kirk hit two home runs for WHCC and four Lions’ pitchers — Dalton Hall, Taylor Hayes, Cal Taylor, and Britt Bowling — combined to limit Georgia Highlands to four runs on five hits and six walks. Zach Fordham (3 IP, 7ER, 5H, 5BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Anthony Reneo (1 IP, 8ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) and Brady Barker (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) also took the mound in relief for GHC. Bryson Horne had a two-hit day for Georgia Highlands that included a double and one RBI. Malik Spratling hit a two-run home run. Blake Brady hit a solo shot. Georgia Highlands College softball swept a home conference doubleheader from South Georgia State Saturday at Stars Park in Cassville winning 5-1 in the opener and 3-1 in the second game. In the first game, GHC took a 3-0 lead through two innings and added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The lone run for the visiting Hawks came in the fourth. In the second game, the Chargers fell behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth but scored their three runs in the bottom half of the inning for the eventual win. Strong pitching was the order of the day for Georgia Highlands. Kara Kight (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 7H, 1BB, 2HBP, 2K) picked up her eleventh win of the season for the Chargers in the opener with a complete-game effort. Haley Robinson (7 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 3K) improved to 4-2 with the second game win in another complete-game performance. Centerfielder Mya Adams (photo) paced the Chargers with a 4-for-6 day in the two games. She finished with a double, a triple, a sacrifice, three runs scored, and one RBI. Sierrah Gani (2RBI) and Kayla Laukka (RBI) both had a double and two hits on the day. Deyonce Lewis (RBI), Lexi Palazzo (2RBI), Alexis Davis, Emma McDonald, Mallory Alford, and Sydney McDonald (RBI) each added one hit for GHC. Cartersville baseball won for the tenth time in the Canes’ last eleven games Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 home win over visiting Maryville, TN at Richard Bell Field. Hurricanes’ pitchers Reece Thompson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K), J.P. Martin (photo, 3.2 IP, 1ER, 6H, 0BB, 4K), and Gage Morris (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) combined to limit the visiting Rebels to a single sixth inning run after Cartersville had built a 3-0 lead. The Canes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Jordan Wilkie single to center field. Second-ranked Cartersville (19-4) returns to Region 5-AAAA action Monday at Chapel Hill and will be back at Richard Bell Field Wednesday against Sandy Creek. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

Calhoun sent 14 men to the plate and scored nine runs in the second inning Friday evening on the way to a 10-0 shutout of Adairsville in a Region 6-AAA game at Calhoun. Starting pitcher Bryse Ingle (5 IP, 0R, 3H, 2BB, 7K) went the distance on the mound for the Class AAA eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets (15-4, 8-2). B.J. Roper, Trace Still, and Logan Hunt had one hit each for the Tigers. Levi Blackwell (1.2 IP, 9R, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 3K) started on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss for Adairsville. Wade Conduff (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) and Eli Agnew (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K) took the mound in relief. Adairsville (3-13, 2-8) hosts Haralson County Tuesday, North Murray Wednesday, and travels to Sonoraville Thursday with each game scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Wallace State-Hanceville CC (AL) Friday afternoon at LakePoint, 11-8. The visiting Lions led 3-1 after three innings and extended their lead to 9-1 heading to the sixth inning. The Chargers narrowed the margin to 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but Wallace State-Hanceville added two runs in the seventh and then held on for the three-run win. Both teams finished with 14 hits. The Lions used seven different pitchers in their win with starter Jerry Bowman credited with the win. GHC utilized six arms. Starter Stevie Szucs (4 IP, 6R, 5ER, 8H, 2BB, 1K) received the pitching loss. Brady Barker (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K), Ryan Smithson (1 IP, 0R, 1BB, 1K), Brant Brown (0.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 1K), Dalton Rhadans (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3K), and Levi Ayers (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) also pitched. Brady hit two home runs and finished with three RBI for the Chargers. Keith Lyle had three hits including two doubles. Bryson Horne had two hits including a double and three RBI. Willis Kemp and Parker Orr contributed two hits and one RBI each. Lavoisier Fisher added one hit for Georgia Highlands. With the win, Wallace-Hanceville improved to 17-10-1. Georgia Highlands (23-16) plays at Wallace-Hanceville Sunday afternoon to complete the home-and-home series.
