Cartersville High School’s track and field teams had ten athletes, including three region champions, to advance to the Class AAAA State Sectional Meet from Thursday’s Region 5-AAAA Championship Meet in Tyrone. Top four individuals in each event qualified for the State Sectionals where they will compete against top four placers from three other regions. Chapel Hill won both the girls and boys region championships Thursday with the girls scoring 168 points and the boys totaling 174. In the girls meet, Sandy Creek (149) was second followed by LaGrange (136.5), Cedartown (50.5), Troup (48), Cartersville (38), and Central-Carroll (28). For the boys, Sandy Creek (158) was runner-up followed by Cedartown (109), Cartersville (80), Central-Carroll (53), LaGrange (31), and Troup (8). Individual region qualifiers advance to one of two Class AAAA Sectionals. The Region 5-AAAA qualifiers are assigned to Sectional I at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, May 4. Koby Stansel tossed a complete-game, one-hitter Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Woodland and Zach Wilson delivered a seventh inning walk off RBI single as the Wildcats knocked off Class AAAAA third-ranked Kell 3-2 and celebrated their seniors’ final home game. Wilson (photo below) finished the night 2-for-3 and drove in all three of the Wildcats’ runs. Stansel (photo left, 7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 4BB, 5K) allowed only a second inning single to the Longhorns’ Noah Dawkins, but defensive miscues by the Wildcats and walks enabled Kell to reach the final frame in a 2-2 tie. Woodland committed four errors in the contest. In addition to the production off Wilson’s bat, Woodland got a pair of hits from Dallas Adams including a double plus a double by Marco Haro and a single by Bailey Ward. The loss dropped Kell to 20-6 for the season and 12-3 in region action. It also placed the Longhorns in a four-way tie for first place in Region 5-AAAA with Carrollton, Rome, and East Paulding. All four teams have one region game remaining. Woodland (11-14, 7-8) is scheduled to complete the 2019 campaign and will look to play spoiler again Friday at Kell. PHOTOS: TCPics Photography CARROLLTON 8, CASS 4 The host Colonels held a 3-2 lead through four innings Wednesday night, but 8th-ranked Carrollton outscored Cass 6-1 over the final three innings to keep pace with three other 7-AAAAA teams (Kell, Rome, and East Paulding) at the top of the region standings. Carrollton (23-5, 12-3) is in a four-way tie for first place in the league with each team having one regular season, region game remaining. The Trojans are scheduled to host Cass Friday at 5:55 p.m. while Kell entertains Woodland and Rome goes head-to-head with East Paulding in Dallas. Kannen Christian (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) picked up Carrollton’s pitching win Wednesday in relief of starter Eli Runyan (4 IP, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K). Tucker Sullivan (0.2 IP) and Sam Simpson (1.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1K) also pitched for the Trojans. Jayden Smith (5.2 IP, 7R, 2ER, 9H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss for the Colonels despite a solid outing. Two Cass errors led to five unearned runs. Clay Means (1.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 2K) recorded the final five outs on the mound for hosts after Smith left in the sixth. Brandon Prince was the only Trojan with two hits. He drove in one run. Charlie Lanier and Asa Awbrey added RBI doubles for Carrollton. Sam Melton had two hits including a double for Cass. Bryson Markley (RBI) and Logan Nelson also had two hits. Blaine Ingram contributed a double. Jordan Gani and Kyle Miller had the other Colonels’ base hits. Smith drove in a pair of runs with two sacrifice flies. Cass (7-18, 3-12) concludes the season Friday at Carrollton. RINGGOLD 11, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Adairsville High School baseball team dropped an 11-1, five-inning decision to visiting 5th-ranked Ringgold Wednesday evening at Tigers’ Field. Ringgold, who has locked up the Region 6-AAA title, raced to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings and added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Adairsville scored its run in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Hunt scored on a wild pitch after he had singled to start the inning. Wyatt Tennant had a pair of doubles and two RBI to pace the Ringgold attack. Four other visitors had one hit each. Wade Conduff, Trace Still, and B.J. Roper had two hits each for Adairsville. Evan Henry and Hunt had the other base hits for the locals. Mason Parker (3.1 IP, 1ER, 7H, 1BB, 5K) was the winning pitcher for Ringgold. Eli Agnew (1 IP, 5ER, 1H, 5BB, 1K) took the pitching loss for Adairsville. Brenden Carroll (0.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 1H, 2BB), Jacob Ray (2.1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 3BB) and Roper (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched. Ringgold improved to 23-5 overall and 15-0 in the region. Adairsville (5-16, 4-11) concludes the 2019 season Thursday at home against Murray County at 5:55 p.m.

The Hurricanes got a complete-game, shutout performance Wednesday night from pitcher Cohen Wilbanks and enjoyed a pair of two-run home runs from Kolby Adams and Josh Davis for a 5-0 win at Cedartown. The win — combined with Troup’s 4-3 walk-off loss at LaGrange — secured the twenty-sixth region baseball championship in program history for Cartersville. Wilbanks scattered five hits, needed only 76 pitches, and did not walk a batter in one of his best performances of the year. He fanned six Bulldogs. Adams’ two-run home run in the second inning gave the Canes an early lead. Preston Welchel doubled home Davis in the fifth to make the score 3-0, and Davis added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for some Hurricanes’ insurance. Davis finished the night with three hits including his home run and a lead-off double to start the game. He also scored twice. Ian Inaba had two hits and scored a run. The other Canes’ hits were Adams’ dinger, Welchel’s RBI double, and a seventh inning single by Wilbanks. The loss evened Cedartown’s record at 14-14 overall and 6-6 in Region 5-AAAA. The Bulldogs will be the region’s fourth-seeded team in the state playoffs. Cartersville (23-4, 10-1) will wrap of their region slate Thursday at Chapel Hill at 5:55 p.m. and will host River Ridge Saturday at 1 p.m. in their regular season finale’. The Canes will host the fourth place team from Region 8-AAAA in the opening round of the state playoffs that begin next Wednesday. With two more region games remaining for most teams in Region 8-AAAA, the likely opponent for Cartersville will be Oconee County but St. Pius is a possibility.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team went back-and-forth with West Georgia Tech Wednesday evening, but came away with an important 6-5 home conference win. There were four lead changes in the contest, but the Chargers went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run inning and then held off the Knights over the final two frames. Jacob Meyer (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Georgia Highlands in relief of starter Dalton Rhadans (6 IP, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 6K). Logan Ward (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) did not allow a run while recording the final three outs for a save. Bryson Horne had three hits, a walk, and two RBI to lead the Chargers’ attack. Hunter Moody and Trace Twardoski (2 RBI) both finished with two hits including a double each. Blake Brady and Willis Kemp contributed one hit and one RBI apiece. Skylar McPhee and Parker Orr added one hit each. The loss drops West Georgia Tech to 16-24 for the year and 7-16 in conference action. Georgia Highlands (27-19, 13-10) remains in third place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with seven league games remaining. The Chargers play at Gordon College Friday afternoon and start a four game series with East Georgia State Monday. The first of the four will be at LakePoint with the final three games of the series Friday and Saturday at East Georgia.

The Woodland girls tennis team was eliminated from the Class AAAAA state tournament Wednesday with a 3-1 loss at Riverwood. The Lady Cats’ only win came at Line 2 doubles where Abigail Spaulding and Monterya Morrow won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Lady Raiders’ points came at the three singles positions. Woodland’s Breanna Shook lost 6-0, 6-0 at Line 1; Becky Wesley lost at Line 2 6-1, 6-1; and Kayla Gales dropped her Line 3 match 6-4, 6-3. The Line 1 doubles duo of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry was pulled after splitting two closely contested sets. Riverwood advances to the Round of 16 where the Lady Raiders will host Clarke Central, a 5-0 first round winner over Arabia Mountain.

On a busy night for local soccer teams, Micah Vance scored a hat trick of goals for the Lady Canes as Cartersville defeated visiting Southeast Whitfield, 5-1. VANCE HAT TRICK HIGHLIGHTS LADY CANES WIN The Lady Canes led 2-0 at halftime and rolled to a 5-1 non-region victory over visiting Southeast Whitfield Tuesday night in Cartersville’s final regular season home game. Micah Vance scored a hat trick of goals for Cartersville including the first two in the 26th and 28th minutes of the contest. Kelly Betancourt assisted on the initial goal. Abbey Craig got the Lady Canes started in the second half with an unassisted goal in the 44th minute. Then Vance completed her hat trick off an assist from Chloe Williams in the 52nd minute. Devondria Johnson added the final Cartersville goal unassisted in the 60th minute. Cartersville (10-4-1) closes out the regular season slate Thursday at Allatoona in a tune-up for their state playoff opener Thursday, April 25 at Weinman Stadium. The Lady Canes will host Oconee County in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs with a 6 p.m. kickoff. HURRICANES FALL TO RAIDERS, 3-1 The Hurricanes lost their final home regular season contest of the season to Southeast Whitfield Tuesday night, 3-1. COLONELS BATTLE TO CONSECUTIVE DRAWS The Cass boys soccer team has played to back-to-back draws — tying Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday night at home 0-0 on the heels of a 2-2 tie with North Springs at Cochran Stadium last Friday night. Cass (3-10-3) wraps up the 2019 campaign at Coahulla Creek Thursday evening at 7 p.m. LATE GOALS SPOIL LADY COLONELS SENIOR NIGHT Back to back goals by the visiting Lady Generals in the 70th and 71st minutes lifted visiting Heritage-Catoosa to a 2-1 win over Cass Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium. The Lady Colonels led for better than an hour in the contest after Jaden Musacchio found the back of the net in the second minute off a corner from Maddie Shook. The loss, as the Lady Colonels celebrated the careers of nine seniors in their final home game, dropped Cass to 7-9-1 on the season. Cass concludes the 2019 season with another non-region game at Coahulla Creek Thursday at 5:30 p.m. LADY TIGERS FALL IN OVERTIME The Adairsville girls lost their first Region 6-AAA game this season Tuesday night in a 5-4 overtime loss to visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Lady Tigers took an early 2-0 lead and led 4-2 at the intermission, but the visiting Warriors scored twice in the second half to send the game to overtime and took their only lead of the game in the game’s 86th minute. Cat Wheeler had two goals for Adairsville. Kaylee Jordan scored a goal and assisted one of the Wheeler scores. Megan Hardin scored the other Tigers’ goal on one of two assists in the game by Taylor Rhoades. Adairsville keeper Havyn Isaac finished with ten saves. The Lady Tigers (10-3-1, 6-1) travel to Calhoun (10-3, 6-1) Thursday with the Region 6-AAA title on the line. TIGERS LOSE IN OVERTIME The Adairsville boys soccer team took a 3-0 lead over visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe into the intermission Tuesday night, but the Warriors outscored the Tigers 4-1 in the second half to send the game into overtime. LFO then outscored Adairsville 2-1 in the overtime periods to a 6-5 Region 6-AAA victory. Joseph Pacheco and Emanuel Lopez each scored twice for the Tigers and Angel Banda scored the other Adairsville goal. Tigers' Goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant recorded 22 saves in the loss. Adairsville concludes the season Thursday at Calhoun.

A seven-run fifth inning vaulted Adairsville past Coahulla Creek 9-8 in Dalton Tuesday night. The Tigers trailed 2-0 early, tied the game 2-2 in the third inning, but fell behind again when the Colts scored two runs in the fourth. Adairsville’s big inning built a 9-4 lead and the Tigers held off the Colts down the stretch for a one-run, Region 6-AAA road win. Levi Blackwell (2.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Adairsville in relief of starter Elijah Padgett (3 IP, 3ER, 2H, 6BB, 1K). Wade Conduff (0.2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 2BB, 1K) retired the final two outs in the sixth inning and Noah Nation (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) earned a save with a scoreless seventh inning on the mound. The Bartow County Little League Orioles continue to lead the Major League standings as a new week of action begins Tuesday. The Orioles' (5-0) latest win came over the Rangers who find themselves in a third place tie with the Braves and Tigers. The Cartersville High School tennis teams advanced in the Class AAAA state tournament Tuesday evening with the girls and boys taking first round matches over visiting Stephens County at Dellinger Park. The Lady Canes won 4-0 and the Hurricanes took a 3-0 victory. The Cartersville girls secured the team victory with wins from Ashley Popham at Line 1 singles, Emily Bush (photo) at Line 2 singles, Chloe Satterfield on the third singles line, and the Line 2 doubles tandem of Mason Cline and Mia Shaw. The Cartersville boys captured their first round win with a win at Line 2 singles by Luke Kotteman and victories at both doubles lines. Luke Gambill and Nate McDonald paired for the Canes’ Line 1 doubles win while John Blackhall and Jackson Cline won on Line 2. Will Allen (photo), the Canes' Line 1 singles player, was leading when the winning team point was secured and had his match halted. The Cartersville girls will host Flowery Branch in the next round with the match date to be determined. The Cartersville boys return to the hardcourts right away and will host Marist Wednesday in the Round of 16.

The Cartersville High School baseball team moved a step closer to securing the Region 5-AAAA championship Monday night at Richard Bell Field with a 9-1 win over Cedartown. The Canes still have region road games remaining at Cedartown Wednesday and at Chapel Hill Thursday. Third-ranked Cartersville currently leads Troup County by one game in the loss column with the Tigers concluding their region slate Wednesday at LaGrange. Monday night, the Canes took control early securing a 9-0 lead through the first four innings. The Bulldogs’ lone, unearned run came in the fifth inning off a pair of walks and an infield miscue. Cade Dingler, who doubled twice, had the only Cedartown hits. J.P. Martin hit a two-run home run in the second inning to get the Canes’ offense rolling. He later drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the Canes’ eighth run of the game in the fourth inning. Preston Welchel had two hits including a double and one RBI. Jordan Wilkie and Ian Inaba also had two hits and one RBI. Cohen Wilbanks and Mason Barnett added the other Hurricanes’ hits. Barnett (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 5BB, 9K) started on the mound and picked up his eighth win in nine starts this season. EAST PAULDING 12, CASS 4 The visiting Raiders charged to a 10-0 lead in the first three innings and held off Cass for a 12-4 win Monday at the Cass Athletic Complex. Seth Grenon and Brandon Haston combined for seven hits and five RBI for East Paulding. All four of Grenon’s hits were singles and he finished with two RBI. Haston singled, tripled, and homered in his three hits. Eli Studdard also hit a home run for the Raiders. Cole McDaniel (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 3K) and Haston (4 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) combined on the mound in East Paulding’s win. Thomas Botts (3 IP, 10R, 8ER, 10H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss for the Colonels. Jordan Gani (4 IP, 2ER, 6H, 1BB, 1K) completed the final four frames on the mound. Blaine Ingram had two hits including a double for Cass. Clay Means added a double. Logan Nelson, Matt Shook, and Hunter Lee had the other Colonels’ hits. Jayden Smith drove in a Cass run with a sacrifice fly. East Paulding improved to 19-7 with their win. The Raiders are 12-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (7-18, 3-12) wraps up the 2019 season this week with a final home game Wednesday against 8th-ranked Carrollton at 5:55 p.m. before traveling to Carrollton Friday. COOSA 9, WOODLAND 6 Woodland baseball exchanged the lead at Coosa Monday evening, but came up short in a 9-6 non-region loss. Woodland narrowed Coosa’s early lead to 4-2 in the third inning and grabbed a 6-4 advantage in the top of the sixth, but the host Eagles scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to take over the game late. Jackson Thomas (0.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for Coosa in relief of starter Caleb Smith (5.1 IP, 5R, 2ER, 5H, 1BB). Seth Crowe (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) earned a one-inning save. Scotty Smith (1 IP, 5R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland in relief of starter Peyton Posey (5 IP, 4ER, 7H, 0BB, 6K). Four Eagles — Dastyn Trapp, Logan Pledger, Gage Clanton, and Elijah Smith — had two hits each. Koby Stansel had a pair of hits and two RBI for the Wildcats. Bailey Ward contributed two hits including a double and one RBI. Carter Heath had a double and two RBI. Smith doubled home a run while Toby Queen and Marco Haro added one hit apiece. Coosa improved to 4-19-1 overall. Woodland (10-16) concludes the home schedule Wednesday against 3rd-ranked Kell at 5:55 p.m. and travels to Cobb County to face the Longhorns Friday.
