The Woodland High School tennis teams dropped matches at Kell Thursday afternoon to the host Longhorns. The Lady Cats lost 4-1 and the Wildcats fell 3-2. At the time of the suspension, the Lady Tigers and Lady Colts were knotted at two matches each. The Coahulla Creek boys were leading two matches to one. The date for conclusion of the match has not been determined.

Three Cartersville pitchers combined to shutout Class 6A Alexander Thursday afternoon at Richard Bell Field and the bats provided enough offense as the Class 4A 2nd-ranked Hurricanes won a non-region contest, 3-0. Starting pitcher Mason Barnett (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 2K) and reliever Cohen Wilbanks (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 1K) turned the mound over to closer Gage Morris (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) in the seventh as the Canes offense posted a single run in the third inning and two more in the sixth. Barnett was credited with the pitching win. Morris earned a save. Jordan Wilkie had two hits for Cartersville including a double. Ian Inaba (photo) contributed a hit and two RBIs. Preston Welchel had a double and one RBI and Alan Thacker doubled. Luke Townsend had two of the Cougars three hits. The loss for Alexander (10-2) snapped a 10-game winning streak. Cartersville (10-3) is scheduled to play Sonoraville Saturday at the Rome Braves’ State Mutual Stadium in Rome at 10 a.m. WOODLAND 7, HIRAM 2 Hiram scored twice in the home half of the first inning Thursday evening, but Woodland followed with seven unanswered runs which was plenty for Wildcats’ pitcher Ben Ammons to defeat the Hornets 7-2 in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Marco Haro hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead and Koby Stansel — who finished with two hits — hit a solo shot in the fifth to give Woodland a 5-2 advantage. Scotty Smith finished with two hits including a double and two RBIs. Dallas Adams also had two hits for the Wildcats. Fisher Davis added a hit and one RBI. Bailey Ward contributed a double and Peyton Posey had the other Woodland base hit. Ammons (photo) tossed a complete game for the Wildcats' victory scattering nine hits and a hit batsman. He did not issue a walk and fanned six. With the loss, the Hornets (0-10, 0-6) remained winless on the season. Woodland (5-8, 3-3) opens a home-and-home region series at Cass on Monday.

The Cass girls tennis team defeated Paulding County 4-1 Wednesday, but the boys squad fell by a 3-2 score to the Patriots. Line 1 singles player Emily Surcey (photo) won 6-0, 6-0 to lead the Lady Colonels to a singles sweep of the Lady Patriots. Payton Tatusko won at Line 2, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 and Emma Wickenheiser won her match at Line 3, 6-0, 6-2. McKenley King and Carli Rediger took Line 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-3.

Woodland baseball built a lead with a five-run third inning Wednesday night and held on for a 9-4 Region 7-AAAAA victory at home over Hiram. The Wildcats went up 6-1 in the third frame and added on two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth inning to build a 9-1 advantage. The Hornets scored a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Woodland lead. Woodland starting pitcher Koby Stansel (5 IP, 1ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K, photo) picked up the win. Zach Wilson (1.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 2K) entered in the sixth and worked into the seventh inning before Scotty Smith (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) retired the game’s final two outs with strikeouts. Bailey Ward had three hits for the Wildcats. Dallas Adams finished with a pair of hits including a double and four RBIs. Peyton Posey had two hits and one RBI. Rome pitcher Alden Astin tossed a complete-game two-hitter Wednesday evening and the Wolves blanked Cass 3-0 at LakePoint in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Astin needed only 81 pitches, walked two, and struck out seven in his win. Clay Means and Thomas Botts managed the only Cass base hits — both singles. The Wolves (6-4, 3-2) scored a run in the second inning and added two more in the fourth and managed only five hits themselves. Astin tripled and drove in a run. Brayer Cowan and Caleb Ellard had the other Rome RBIs. Logan Nelson (6 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 4K) went the distance on the mound for the Colonels in the loss. Cass (7-6, 3-2) will host Rome in the conclusion of the home-and-home series Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Woodland tennis teams split a pair of non-region matches with Class 6A Allatoona Wednesday. The Lady Cats topped the Lady Bucs 3-2, but the Allatoona boys defeated the Wildcats by the same 3-2 score. Ten local high school senior basketball players will participate Thursday night in the 5th annual Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club Senior All-Star Games at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. Twenty-four senior girls and twenty-four senior boys were chosen from 26 different schools in the area to participate in the event. In the girls game, Cass will be represented by Amber Brittian, Sharia Wade, Payton Stoddard, and Alexis Ware on a team coached by Lady Colonels’ head coach Burt Jackson. Nakiyah Washington will represent Adairsville on the team and Woodland will be represented by Madgie Robinson. Four local players were selected to play in the boys contest. Cartersville’s Perignon Dyer and Isaac Gridley, along with Hunter Johnson of Woodland and Jacquez Fountain of Cass. On the strength of four goals by Cat Wheeler, the Adairsville girls soccer team remained unbeaten in region play Tuesday night with a convincing 6-0 win at Murray County. The Tigers, on the other hand, were not able to score in a loss to the Indians and both Woodland teams lost region matches to Rome. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, MURRAY COUNTY 0 Sophomore Cat Wheeler scored four goals, including three in the second half, to guide the Lady Tigers to a 6-0 Region 6-AAA road win Tuesday at Murray County. Taylor Rhoades assisted Kaylee Jordan on Adairsville’s second goal of the game in the 13th minute and Rhoades added a goal just before halftime to give Adairsville a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Goalkeeper Havyn Isaac (photo) had seven saves in the shutout. Murray County is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-2, 3-0) makes the trip to Coahulla Creek Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. MURRAY COUNTY 4, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 Although Tigers’ goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant made fifteen saves in the game, the Indians scored three first half goals and added another in the second half for a 4-0 region win. Murray County improved to 4-1-2 on the season and 2-0 in region action. The Tigers fall to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 6-AAA and travel to Coahulla Creek Thursday. ROME 4, WOODLAND GIRLS 1 The Lady Cats scored in the opening minute of the game Tuesday, but Rome answered with four first half goals of their own to hand Woodland a 4-1 Region 7-AAAAA loss. The Lady Wolves improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the league. Next for the Lady Cats (1-7-1, 1-3) is a non-region match at North Cobb Wednesday. ROME 7, WOODLAND BOYS 1 Miguel Hernandez had the Wildcats only goal in a 7-1 home loss to Rome. The visiting Wolves improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (1-3-2, 1-2) travels to Villa Rica Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Cass girls and boys soccer teams dropped Region 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday night at home against East Paulding. The Lady Colonels were edged 5-4. The Colonels fell 2-1. Leido Toribio scored two goals for the Lady Colonels on assists from Logan Vermaas and Lupita Pineda. Vermaas scored the third Cass goal on another assist from Pineda and Jaden Musacchio added the final Lady Colonels score off a feed from Maddie Shook. The Cass boys lost to the visiting Raiders 2-1. Alex Cabanas scored the only Colonels’ goal off an assist from Slomi Orozco. The Lady Colonels are now 3-5-1 overall and 1-3 in region play. The Colonels slipped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the region. Cass travels to Hiram Friday evening.

Cass baseball rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday night for a walk-off, Region 7-AAAAA win over the Hiram Hornets. The Colonels trailed 7-5 heading into their final three outs, but rallied with four hits and a sacrifice fly to escape with their second straight, one-run win over Hiram. In the eventful Colonels’ seventh, Thomas Botts singled and moved to third on a Sam Melton double. A wild pitch enabled Botts to score. Logan Nelson followed with a single into right field moving Melton to third and Nelson moved up to scoring position on the throw back to the infield. Kyle Miller was inserted as a courtesy runner for Nelson before Jayden Smith delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Melton and moved Miller to third base. Karson Kelley (photo) chased Miller home with a one-out RBI single to left field and Cass had its fourth win in its last five games. The Hornets led 3-0 until Cass scored twice in the bottom of the third. Hiram then extended the lead to 6-2, but the Colonels scored three runs over the next two innings to narrow the margin to 6-5. The Hornets (0-9, 0-5) added a run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-5, setting up the Colonels’ dramatic final frame. Smith (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Cass in relief of starter Clay Means (5 IP, 6R, 5ER, 10H, 3BB, 3K). Sophomore Matt Shook led the Colonels’ offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Botts had two hits and two RBIs. Melton (double, RBI), Means (double), Nelson, Kelley (RBI), and Bryson Markley (double, RBI) had the other Cass base hits.
