The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department 10U girls basketball all-stars defeated Paulding County Thursday night in a District 5 consolation game to earn a berth in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Class A State Tournament March 1-2. The Bartow 10U girls grabbed a 13-2 lead in the first quarter Thursday night and overpowered Paulding County 32-6. Bartow held leads of 21-4 at halftime and 29-4 after three quarters on their way to the 26-point victory. Kaytlin Arnold led Bartow in scoring with 10 points. Samantha Gough followed with eight. Haley Collum contributed five points. Rihanna Crittenden scored three while Carson Brannon, Nakayla Evans, and Jayda Cothran added two points each. Bartow 10U girls defeated Dalton last Saturday 33-13 to reach the semifinals, but lost to Rome Monday night 32-23. The win over Paulding County advances the team to the March 1-2 State Tournament at Edwards Park Community Center in Dalton March 1-2. In other action Thursday night, the Bartow 10U boys all-stars lost in their GRPA District 5 championship game with Smyrna 52-34 at the LakePoint Champions Center. The runner-up finish for Bartow 10U advances the locals to the six-team GRPA Class A State Tournament in Griffin March 1-2. Bartow will play the champion of District 4 in a preliminary game Friday night with the single-elimination championship bracket played on Saturday, March 2 at the Taylor Street Gym.

The Bartow Blue 10U boys basketball all-stars defeated Whitfield County Wednesday night at the LakePoint Champions Center 55-30 to advance to the championship game of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 tournament. Jabari Burleson led Bartow in scoring with 16 points. Ja’kez Baldwin followed with 10 points. Bartow 10U will play Smyrna Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Champions Center for the GRPA District 5 title. By reaching the district finals, Bartow 10U has secured a berth in the GRPA Class A State Tournament in Griffin on March 1 and 2. BARTOW 8U, 12U GIRLS FALL IN DISTRICT FINALS The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department 8U and 12U girls all-star teams both came up short Wednesday night in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 championship games at Edwards Park Community Center in Dalton. Both teams lost to host Whitfield County teams with the 8U Bartow team falling 37-8 and the 12U Bartow team losing a 47-25 decision. In the 8U game, Whitfield raced to a 12-2 lead after one period, led 24-6 at the intermission, and was up 34-8 on their way to a 29-point win. Rakhia Pace scored three points for Bartow 8U. Layla Whitener had two points and Anna Townsend one. Despite Wednesday night’s losses, both Bartow teams advance to the GRPA Class A State Tournament March 1 and 2 as District 5 runners-up. The 8U girls state tournament begins Friday, March 1 back at Edwards Park in Dalton with preliminary games. The 12U girls state tournament also begins March 1 at Coahulla Creek High School in Dalton. The single-elimination state championship bracket will be held Saturday, March 2 at both locations.

The Cass Lady Colonels had their 2018-19 season come to a close Wednesday night in Decatur with a 59-43 loss to the Columbia Eagles. Cass led 17-10 after one quarter and was ahead 25-19 at the intermission, but a huge surge by the host Lady Eagles where they outscored Cass 23-9 in the third quarter put Columbia ahead 42-34 heading into the final period. Columbia then held off the Lady Colonels to a 16-point win to advance to next Tuesday night’s state quarterfinals. A trio of guards paced Columbia. Sophomore India Terrell scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the second half. Junior Constance Thomas scored 14 of her 20 points in the final 16 minutes, and senior Shontrice Austin also reached double figures with 10 points. Cass senior Payton Stoddard and freshman Claire Davis (photo above) paced Cass with 11 points each. Alexis Ware followed with nine. Londaisha Smith scored five. Sharia Wade (photo right), Ariana Hames, and Brianna Stephenson had two points apiece. Taryn Callahan added one. Columbia (21-7) heads to the Class 5A Elite Eight after winning only six games a year ago. The Lady Eagles will face Wednesday’s Wayne County/Harris County winner. Cass finishes the year with a 22-8 record.

A pair of Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department youth basketball all-star teams advanced to their respective Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 5 tournaments Tuesday night in action at LakePoint Champions Center in Emerson. The Bartow Blue 8U boys defeated Rome 32-7 and the Bartow Blue 10U boys team defeated Paulding County, 52-11. Bartow 8U held Rome scoreless in three of four periods in their win. Bartow led 6-0 after one quarter, 12-0 at halftime, and 24-7 after three quarters en route to their 25-point win. Kayden Blackwell had a game-high 11 points for Bartow 8U. He was followed by Anthony Moreno with eight points. Mitchell Raughton knocked down six points. Solomon James scored four and Kameron Hosey added three points for the locals. The win advances Bartow 8U to the semifinals of the nine-team tournament Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at LakePoint Champions Center where they will face Tuesday night’s Powder Springs / Dalton winner. In the 10U tournament, Bartow Blue easily handled Paulding County 52-11. The locals led 20-2 after one quarter, 34-6 at the break, and 46-8 after three quarters on their way to a 41-point victory. All ten Bartow 10U players found their way into the scoring column led by Ja’kez Baldwin’s 13 and Kyron McClendon’s 10 points. Jorian Bailey scored seven. Jayden Metcalf finished with six points. Nasier Bennett, Tavaris Burleson, and Christian Teasley contributed four points each. Jabari Burleson had two points while Kaiden Kent and Jaden Daise added one each. The win moves Bartow Blue 10U into the 12-team tournament semifinals Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m. at the LakePoint Champions Center against Tuesday night’s Powder Springs / Whitfield County winner.

The Bartow County 8U girls all-star team turned up their defensive effort in the second quarter Monday night and went on to defeat Rome 30-20 in the GRPA District 5 semifinals at Edwards Park in Dalton. As a result, Bartow 8U will play Whitfield County Wednesday night at 6:15 p.m. for the district title. That game will also be played at Edwards Park. Rome led 7-4 after one quarter, but Bartow 8U blanked them in the second quarter to lead 12-7 at halftime. Bartow went on to take a 24-11 lead after three periods and held on for a 10-point win. Rakhia Pace led Bartow with 16 points. Lindsey Chubb, Lilli Wear, and Layla Whitener tossed in four points each. Reese Gibson added two points. ROME 32, BARTOW 10U GIRLS The Bartow County 10U girls lost a semifinal game to Rome 32-23 Monday night at Edwards Park in Whitfield County. Rome held an 11-8 lead after one quarter and was ahead 19-12 at the intermission. They maintained a 24-17 advantage after three periods. Samantha Gough paced Bartow 10U with nine points. Kaytlin Arnold followed with six points. Nakayla Evans scored three. Alivia Joslin and Haley Collum contributed two points apiece. Rihanna Crittenden added one point. POWDER SPRINGS 64, BARTOW 14U BOYS 41 The Bartow County 14U boys team lost to host Powder Springs Monday night in the GRPA District 5 championship game to finish as tournament runner-up. Rodrick Taylor led Bartow with 13 points. Nehemiah DeRoche and Jadas Whatley followed with 12 points apiece. Bryce Waynick knocked down eight points. Isaiah Ford totaled six and Shamar Burgs added two points. ROME 55, CARTERSVILLE 12U BOYS 36 The Cartersville 12U boys all-stars fell to Rome 55-36 Monday night in the GRPA District 5 quarterfinals at LakePoint Champions Center. POWDER SPRINGS 78, BARTOW COUNTY 26 The Powder Springs 12U boys took a dominant win over Bartow County Monday night in the GRPA District 5 quarterfinals, 78-26. Powder Springs will face Rome in the semifinals at LakePoint Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.

Sprayberry broke open a tied game Monday night with a three-run sixth inning to defeat visiting Cass, 7-4. The Colonels contributed to their own demise by committing a pair of errors in the decisive inning. Cass held a 1-0 lead through two innings and led 4-3 at the end of the fourth, but Sprayberry tied the game with a single run in the fifth and took the lead for good in the sixth. Cass managed a single baserunner in the seventh, but failed to threaten further. Sprayberry’s Cade Caldwell and Nate Marietta split the pitching duties and combined to allow only two earned runs while striking out 11. Bryce Koshko and Caldwell combined for four of the Yellow Jackets’ hits and three RBI. Blaine Ingram (two singles) and Nic Wallin (double, single, RBI) both had two hits for Cass. Clay Means contributed a double and one RBI. Logan Nelson added one hit. Matt Shook (1.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss despite not allowing an earned run. Ingram (2.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 5BB, 6K) started on the mound for the Colonels and Wallin (1.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 4K) followed. Means (0.1 IP, 0R) retired the final out in the sixth inning. The win for Sprayberry evened the Yellow Jackets’ record at 2-2. Cass (1-2) will play at Adairsville Thursday before playing a pair of games Saturday in the Gwinnett County Invitational where they will face Centennial at 2 p.m. and Dacula at 5 p.m.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Mark Chester (Georgia Northwestern Fr., Cass) — Chester had five points, but the Bobcats fell to Dalton State’s club team in a quickly thrown together game after Georgia Northwestern’s originally scheduled opponent — Georgia Gwinnett College — reportedly had to cancel. Chester was not among the scorers in Saturday’s 106-89 loss to West Georgia Tech. Ryan Davis (Francis Marion Sr., Cartersville) — Davis finished with 13 points as the Patriots eased to a 90-56 win over Lander on Thursday. He followed that up with 16 points on Saturday, but Francis Marion dropped a road game to North Georgia by an 87-75 final score. Davis totaled 10 rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block across the two games. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky Fr., Cartersville native) — Kentucky finished the week 1-1 following a controversial late loss to LSU in the midweek before knocking off No. 1 Tennessee on Saturday. Hagans finished with nine points, seven assists, two rebounds and two steals in helping the Wildcats defeat the Volunteers. It came on the heels of one of his quietest games of the season against the Tigers, during which he had four points and not much else. He played just 21 minutes versus LSU — his fewest in a game since November — but saw 36 minutes of action in Saturday’s massive win. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls Fr., Woodland) — Harris wound up with six points, one rebound and one assist in a 64-33 loss to Pensacola Christian College in Friday’s regular-season finale. Toccoa Falls opens the National Christian College Athletic Association South Region Tournament against Johnson University Florida at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pensacola. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State So., Cartersville) — McClinic earned her first start and a season-high 23 minutes in a 79-66 win over Faulkner to kick off a three-game week last Monday. Middle Georgia State also dropped a tough 77-75 game to Mobile Thursday before bouncing back to grab a 66-59 win against Stillman on Saturday. McClinic totaled 12 points and five rebounds over the trio of games. Jana Morning (Berry So., Cass) — Berry saw its nine-game winning streak come to a halt with a 62-41 loss to Oglethorpe on the road Saturday. Morning played 39 minutes but shot just 1-for-12 from the floor in the defeat, which marked the end of Berry’s regular season. Morning, who scored in double-figures in every game of the Vikings’ winning run, finished the game with six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Berry will face Centre in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament quarterfinals at 9 p.m. Friday in Jackson, Mississippi. Jonathan Pritchett (Vermont Tech So., Woodland) — The postseason has already began for Pritchett and Co. with the Knights securing a 96-73 win over Paul Smith College in the quarterfinals of the Yankee Small College Conference Tournament on Sunday. Pritchett had seven points in 17 minutes to go with two steals. He saw just seven scoreless minutes as Vermont Tech closed out the regular season with a 77-72 win over Green Mountain College. Next up for Vermont Tech is a semifinal tilt with Southern Maine at 8 p.m. Saturday in Auburn, Maine. Jaylon Pugh (Furman Fr., Cartersville) — Pugh saw eight minutes of action in Saturday’s 96-62 rout of Virginia Military Institute. He had one point and one rebound in his limited time. Furman also defeated UNC-Greensboro earlier in the week. Josie Summerville (North Park Fr., Adairsville) — Summerville pulled down 30 total rebounds in helping North Park finish the regular season with a pair of wins and qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 2006. She had just five points but an incredible 20 rebounds in a 62-58 triumph over Elmhurst. She added two assists and a block in the Wednesday night win. On Saturday, she posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, as North Park topped Millikin College, 77-66. The fifth-seeded Vikings will face No. 4 seed Augustana (Illinois) in the first round of the six-team College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at 7 p.m. tonight in Rock Island, Illinois. Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Jr., Excel Christian) — Thrower, who didn’t see the floor in the Bears’ first two games of the week, went 1-for-2 from 3-point range with an assist in nine minutes of action during a 112-104 overtime loss to Reinhardt at home Saturday. The heartbreaking defeat kept the Bears from reaching the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament. PRO BASKETBALL Elijah Robinson (Villa San Martin, Argentina; Excel Christian) — Robinson finished with 19 points and seven rebounds in a 92-88 loss to Olimpico Ceres last Monday. Villa San Martin bounced back with a 93-76 triumph against Sportivo America on Wednesday, as Robinson chipped in with 11 points and four boards. TENNIS Peyton Gollhofer (Ball State Sr., Cartersville native) — Gollhofer and the rest of the Cardinals continued their stellar start to the season with another great showing over the weekend. The Cartersville native finished 4-0 in singles and doubles action, as Ball State earned road wins over Saint Francis on Friday and Duquesne on Saturday. Gollhofer remained unbeaten in singles action this year with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Line 2 Friday, followed by a Line 3 6-3, 6-2 triumph Saturday. She teamed with Isabelle Dohanics for convincing wins of 6-0 (Friday on Line 2) and 6-1 (Saturday on Line 3).

Georgia Highlands College trailed 5-0 early in their first game Monday at LakePoint, but came from behind for a walk-off 7-6 win over Lincoln Trail Community College (IL). The visiting Statesmen picked up a win of their own by blanking the Chargers in the second game of the day, 5-0. In the opener, Lincoln Trail posted three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second for their early advantage. The Chargers got themselves back in the game, however, in the bottom of the second with four runs of their own. Skylar McPhee and Malik Spratling produced the first Georgia Highlands’ run with back-to-back doubles. Following a walk to Parker Orr, Keith Lyle doubled home a run and Hunter Moody singled home two more to cut the Statesmen’s lead to one. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Orr (photo) singled to tie the game 5-5. Lincoln Trail went back ahead 6-5 in the top of the seventh with a single and a triple, but the Chargers responded in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and a runner at third, Orr again came up clutch with an RBI single into right field to knot the score 6-6. Following a single by Lee Kay, Lyle reached on an infield single to shortstop that enabled Orr to score the walk-off run. Trace Twardoski (0.1 IP, 0R) picked up the pitching win by recording the final out in the top of the seventh. Anthony Reneo (1.2 IP, 5R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) started for the Chargers and Jacob Meyer (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 5K) kept GHC in the game with five innings of middle relief. Lyle, Orr, and Spratling had two hits each. Orr and Lyle both had two RBI. Spratling also drove in a run. McPhee, Kay, and Moody (2 RBI) added one hit apiece. LINCOLN TRAIL 5, GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 0 Lincoln Trail had four pitchers combine for a two-hit shutout in Monday’s Game 2 with Georgia Highlands. Bryson Horne and Lavoisier Fisher had the only Chargers’ hits. Brant Brown (1.1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss for Georgia Highlands in relief of starter Zach Fordham (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K). Logan Ward (1.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1K) and Levi Ayers (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) also pitched for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (10-5) is scheduled to host Emmanuel College JV Tuesday and will host a three-game series with Sinclair CC (OH) Friday and Saturday.

Coastal Carolina University football posted full information Monday regarding Coach Joey King’s arrival to the Chanticleers' program from Cartersville High School. -- from goccusports.com "King joins head coach Jamey Chadwell's staff after five seasons as the head coach of the Purple Hurricanes where he guided Cartersville High School to a 67-4 record, two state championships and four state title games. At Coastal Carolina, King will coach the wide receivers. "Coach King comes to us from the high school ranks where he was a head coach for the last five years at Cartersville High School in the state of Georgia where he posted a record of 67-4 and won two state championships. He will be our wide receivers coach and is an offensive-minded coach that is highly regarded throughout the state of Georgia where he coached for over 10 years. We are fortunate to have him because he had a lot of opportunities to go some different routes in the college game, but he really believed in the vision of our program and what we are about. He believes in what we are trying to do and wants to be a part of that. Our players will be better with him because of the type of person he is, the way he coaches and because of what he believes in. I'm excited for our wide receivers because he will do a great job of getting them ready to go and also loving and serving them." The Bartow County 14U basketball all-stars defeated South Cobb 62-41 on Saturday in the second of two wins at the GRPA District 5 tournament at Ron Anderson Recreation Center in Powder Springs. Against South Cobb, the locals were led by 12 points each from Bryce Waynick and Jadas Whatley. Nehemiah DeRoche and Anthony Daise followed with eight points each. Jonah Cooper and Isaiah Ford contributed six apiece. Shamar Burgs and Cooper Dishinger finished with five points each. Earlier on Saturday, Bartow 14U topped Rome 76-44. Waynick paced Bartow with 19 points followed by DeRoche with 15, Whatley 13, Dishinger 12, Ford 10, Cooper five, and Burgs with two points. The two wins advanced Bartow 14U to the district Championship Monday night at 6:30 p.m. against host Powder Springs. The Cartersville 14U boys split a pair of games Saturday with a win over Bremen 59-44 before falling in the semifinals to Powder Springs, 58-25. In 17U action Saturday, Bartow County fell to host Powder Springs 64-59. Dylan Clayton was top scorer for Bartow with 14 points. Darius Ward followed with 10. Mark Williams, Jenson Parton and Isaac Finch tossed in eight apiece. Brandon Cook scored five points. Josh Reed and Jay Rodgers added four and two points, respectively.

It may only be February, but with the Division I schools beginning their seasons this past weekend, the college softball and baseball season is in full swing at all levels. Meanwhile in the professional ranks, spring training for baseball is getting started with MLB spring schedules beginning later in the week. On the college softball front, former Cass star Sierrah Gani is hitting .561 through Georgia Highlands' first 14 games. Former Cartersville High standout Elliott Anderson picked up his first pitching win of the year at Auburn over the weekend, and at the professional level former Canes southpaw Sam Howard received another invitation to the Colorado Rockies Major League Spring Training camp as a non-roster player. SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Inf., Cass HS)… Gani kept her current 10-game hitting streak alive over the weekend and was 6-for-11 as the Chargers split four games at the Coastal Alabama Sun Chiefs Invitational in Gulf Shores, AL. She finished the weekend with two doubles, two runs scored, two RBI, and a sacrifice. Through 14 games, Gani has a .561 batting average with 18 RBI and two stolen bases. Georgia Highlands (7-7) will host games with Harford CC (Maryland) and Edison CC (Ohio) Saturday and will play those same two teams Sunday. HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., C/UT, Adairsville HS)… went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI Friday in a 12-4 win at Blue Mountain College (MS), but was hitless in three other games — a 4-1 win over Missouri Baptist Friday and losses to Blue Mountain and Missouri Baptist on Saturday. The Tornadoes (2-6) host NAIA 20th-ranked Truett-McConnell College Tuesday for a doubleheader and travel to Southern Wesleyan University for the Warriors’ Invitational Friday and Saturday. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… was 3-for-13 with a triple, sac fly, and one RBI with starts in right field and at DH as the Cougars split four games in this weekend’s Cougar Classic. CSU had a win over Albany State, split two games with Union University (TN), and dropped a matchup with Embry-Riddle University (FL). Columbus State (2-5) will host Miles College Wednesday before traveling to Melbourne, Florida to play in the Florida Tech Invitational Friday through Sunday. In Melbourne, the Cougars will face Palm Beach Atlantic University, Converse College, Lynn University, Barry University, and the hosts Florida Tech. TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 1-for-2 and scored a run last Monday in a 5-2 loss at Thomas University (GA). She was also 0-for-1 in a start at designated hitter in a 4-0 loss at USC-Beaufort Friday. The Barons (2-8) also had two other losses during the week and have a doubleheader Thursday at Trinity Baptist College (FL). ANALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked three innings of middle relief last Wednesday in a 7-3 home loss to University of North Alabama. She allowed three earned runs on three hits and a walk. Yantis also tossed two innings out of the bullpen Saturday in a 5-2 home loss to DePaul University. She gave up a pair of earned runs on five hits and a walk. The Bulldogs (4-7) went 3-1 hosting the Samford Classic with wins over Eastern Illinois, DePaul, and Georgia State. Samford travels to the Florida State Invitational this Friday through Sunday with games against Lipscomb, Elon, and FSU. BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… worked four innings out of the Tigers’ bullpen Friday afternoon and was credited with the win in an 11-2 defeat of visiting Georgia Southern University. Anderson faced 14 batters and did not allow a run on two hits. He fanned seven. Auburn (2-1) split the final two games of the weekend series with the Eagles and will next host Alabama A&M Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Orlando for a three-game series at University of Central Florida Friday through Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., 1B/DH, Cass HS)… started all four games for the Mountain Lions this past week and was 4-for-15 at the plate. He had two doubles, five RBI, and scored four runs. Young Harris (6-5, 2-1) defeated Tusculum at home last Wednesday and won two of three at Lander Friday and Saturday. The Mountain Lions host Anderson University (SC) Tuesday afternoon and a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with Georgia College Friday and Saturday. JOHN REED EVANS — Shorter University (Fr., C, Cartersville HS)… flied out to centerfield in a seventh inning pinch-hitting appearance Saturday during an 8-1 loss at University of West Georgia. Shorter (6-4) won one of three games in the series. The Hawks host Clark Atlanta University Wednesday and play at Alabama-Huntsville in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… started three games this past week and entered a fourth game with a pinch hitting appearance. He was 2-for-9 for the week with one RBI and one run scored. The Wolves lost Wednesday to Georgia College and won two-of-three over Shorter Friday and Saturday. UWG (4-7, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) hosts Columbus State Wednesday before traveling to Mississippi College for a three-game set Saturday and Sunday. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (So., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked three and two-thirds innings in a rough start Saturday at University of Mobile. Osborn received a no-decision allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and walk. The Skyhawks went on to lose 16-11 in the rubber game of a three-game series. Point hosts Talladega College for a doubleheader Wednesday and plays a three-game set at Albany State University Friday and Saturday. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… hit safely in all three games as the Bulldogs opened the season with a trio of wins at Southeastern Louisiana. Robinson was 5-for-15 with a double, walk, three runs scored, and four RBI. Louisiana Tech (3-0) will face Louisiana-Lafayette at home Tuesday night and will host Troy in a three-game series Friday through Sunday. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (Sr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in a pair of games against Lander. The Mountain Lions took two of three games in the Peach Belt Conference series. He also had a pinch hitting appearance last Wednesday in a win over Tusculum. YHC (6-5, 2-1) hosts Anderson University (SC) Tuesday afternoon and will entertain Georgia College for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… was hit by a pitch in his only at-bat this weekend. He pinch hit and played left field in the Mountain Lions’ 14-2 loss to Lander in the second game of a doubleheader. YHC (6-5, 2-1) entertains Anderson University Tuesday and hosts a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with Georgia College Friday and Saturday. PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (6th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… was announced as a non-roster invitee for the Rockies to Major League spring training. Colorado started pitcher and catcher workouts last Wednesday. The first full squad workout for the Rockies is Monday and the spring training game schedule begins on Saturday, February 23. The Rockies play their spring home games at the 11,000-seat Salt River Fields at Talking Stick near Scottsdale, Arizona. CONNOR JUSTUS — L.A. Angels organization (4th yr. pro; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… Justus finished the 2018 season with the Angels’ Double-A Southern League affiliate, the Mobile BayBears. He started the year in Mobile but was sent back down to High Class-A Inland Empire in mid-season. Justus was a recent guest on the Bartow Sports Zone radio show (Feb. 8 show / Episode 132) when he was in Cartersville for a youth baseball camp. ANTHONY SEIGLER — New York Yankees organization (2nd yr. pro; C, Cartersville HS)… the Yankees’ first round pick in 2018 finished to 2018 season with the Pulaski Yankees of the Rookie Appalachian League. At age 19, Seigler begins the 2019 season as the Yankees’ fifth overall prospect according to Baseball America. He played 24 games of rookie ball last summer after dealing with a hamstring injury. His split between the Gulf Coast League and Pulaski finished with a .266 average and .721 OPS. He hit .391 in 23 at-bats from the left side. Although his season ended early with a concussion, Seigler spent the off-season working on his strength. Seigler reported to the Yankees training complex 10 days before pitchers and catchers were required to report.
