The Georgia Highlands softball team split four games Friday and Saturday at the Sun Chief Classic hosted by Coastal Alabama Community College in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Chargers defeated Southern Union CC 3-2 in eight innings Friday before falling to Faulkner State by the same 3-2 score. On Saturday, Georgia Highlands was blanked by Central Alabama CC 9-0 before beating Motlow State CC 12-4. The Chargers won their first extra-inning affair of the 2019 season Friday by edging Southern Union Community College. The two teams were tied 1-1 until the tie-breaker rule was implemented in the eighth inning. Southern union scored their free runner from second on a sac bunt and a hit before Kara Kight retired the side. The Chargers started with speedy Alexis Davis as their free runner at second base in the bottom of the frame. She moved to third on a wild pitch before Mya Adams delivered an RBI single to tie the game 2-2. Deyonce Lewis sacrificed Adams to scoring position and Kayla Laukka provided a ground ball to the right side to score Adams from third base. Kight improved her season mark to 4-2 in the circle. She worked all eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk. Kight fanned two. Former Cass standout, Sierrah Gani continued her hot streak adding two hits and a run scored. Five other Chargers combined for seven hits in the game. In Friday’s loss to Faulkner State, GHC hurler Kayla Phillips was tagged with the loss. She went 3.1 innings allowing three runs, on only two hits and four walks while striking out two. The Chargers were led at the plate by Adams and Davis with two hits apiece. The Chargers also swiped four bags on the day. In Saturday’s loss to Central Alabama, the Chargers yielded eight runs in the first inning. Phillips (2-4) started and was the losing pitcher. Haley Robinson entered in relief and allowed a run in the second inning before tossing two innings of scoreless ball. GHC managed only four hits in the contest. In the weekend finale’ win over Motlow State CC, the Chargers pounded out 15 hits and stole three bases. Davis had two hits including an inside-the-park home run. Adams, Lewis, Gani, Lexi Palazzo and Robinson also added two hits. Kight (5-2) earned the pitching win with a complete game. She allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits and two walks. Kight fanned four. The Chargers (7-7) are scheduled to host Harford CC (MD) and Edison CC (OH) next Saturday and Sunday.

The Woodland wrestling team completed the 2018-19 Class 5A sweep Saturday by capturing the GHSA state traditional tournament championship. Woodland, who won the GHSA state team duals championship earlier in the season, entered this week’s Class 5A traditional finals with nine wrestlers and each of them came through with top four finishes in their respective weight classes. The win is a fifth overall state title for the Woodland wrestling program. Three in the duals competition and now two traditional titles. The Wildcats finished the four-day event at Macon Centreplex with 208.5 points and that was plenty to clear second place Buford who had 14 state finals qualifiers but managed only 186.5 points. Woodland secured the team championship when senior and Northern Iowa signee Kyle Gollhofer captured his fourth individual title — winning the 120 pound division. He wrapped up his final high school season with a perfect record. Wildcats’ sophomores Caden McCrary and Jaxon Smith won state championships. The win for McCrary (132-pounds) marks his second state title in two seasons. Saturday, it took sudden death before he completed a 3-1 win. Smith won the 145-pound division with a major decision in the finals. Two Wildcats finished as individual state runners-up. Colton Bishop (113-pounds) lost to his Buford opponent (Stanford signee Logan Ashton) in the championship match. Bishop, who replaced injured senior Gavin Nix, started the season in the JV ranks. Meanwhile, Wildcats’ 126-pounder Caleb Henson suffered his only loss of the season in his title bout. Four more Woodland competitors wrestled for third place. Cole Cochran (138-pounds), Bryce Shedd (182), and Demarcus Williams (195) all won their respective consolation brackets to place third. Junior Rosati lost his third place bout in the 106-pound division. Hoffmeier recorded a pair of pins and a major decision on his way to the finals. In addition to the Colonels’ sophomore, other state placers for Cass included: Bryce Kresho, Ben Mills, and Kendall Arnold. Kresho was third at 113. Arnold placed third in the 152-pound division. Mills was a sixth place finisher at 126 pounds. As a team, Cass earned 87 points to place sixth. CANES’ NELSON IS RUNNER-UP IN GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP Cartersville’s Paige Nelson reached the 166-pound finals of the inaugural GHSA state girls tournament before falling to Heaven Byrd of Hiram. Elora Waterman also placed for the Cartersville girls. She finished fifth in the 95-pound division. EARICK, WILLIAMS PLACE FOR HURRICANES The Cartersville boys wrestling team had a pair of competitors earn state places in Class AAAA as the team finished 15th with 44 points. Freshman Tyler Earick placed fourth in the 106-pound division. Jabril Williams was sixth in the 160-pound bracket. TIGERS’ BANDA, JACKSON PLACE THIRD Senior Nic Jackson at 170-pounds and sophomore Angel Banda at 113-pounds both finished third in the Class AAA traditional state tournament. As a team, the Tigers finished 12th overall in Class AAA with 42 points.

Georgia Highlands College baseball split a doubleheader Saturday with Lincoln Trail CC (IL). The Chargers won the first game 5-1, but dropped the second game to the Statesmen 8-3. Georgia Highlands posted five runs in the opener on just four hits in the game. The Chargers built their lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning and two more in both the fourth and fifth frames. Lincoln Trail’s only run came in the top of the sixth inning to avoid the shutout. Chargers’ freshman pitcher Dalton Rhadans (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 7K) tossed a complete game, three-hitter and did not allow an earned run to earn the win. Rhadans now has a pair of complete game wins in three starts and is sporting a 1.73 ERA through 17 and 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts. Four different Chargers had one hit each. Travis Sands (double, RBI), Skylar McPhee (double), Parker Orr (2 RBI), and Keith Lyle (2 RBI) provided the safeties. In Game 2, Lincoln Trail took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and built an 8-0 lead before the Chargers got on the board with three runs in the final two innings. The Statesmen out hit Georgia Highlands 11 to 7 in the contest. The Chargers committed a pair of fielding errors. Bryson Horne (2 RBI) and Alex Marquand had two hits each for the Chargers. McPhee (RBI), Willis Kemp, and Lyle added the other GHC hits. Georgia Highlands (9-4) plays a doubleheader against Emmanuel College JV Tuesday afternoon.

Following a week filled with cancelations, postponements, and delays, the Cass baseball team finally got the 2019 season started Saturday with a home doubleheader split with Sonoraville. The Colonels won the opener 10-9 but suffered a 5-2 setback in the second game. Cass and Sonoraville swapped the lead six times in the first game. The visiting Phoenix held leads of 1-0, 3-2, and 9-7. Cass had leads of 2-1, 7-3, and the all-important final advantage of 10-9. Bryson Markley had three hits, including a pair of triples and two RBI in the victory. He also scored the game winning run in the sixth inning on a passed ball. Thomas Botts had a pair of hits including a sixth inning, two-run home run that tied the game 9-9. Matt Shook also contributed a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly. Sam Melton and Karson Kelley had the other Colonels’ base hits. Clay Means (2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Jayden Smith (5 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB, 4K). In Game 2, Sonoraville scored five runs in the first two frames and made the lead hold up in a 5-2 win. Cass out hit the Phoenix six to four, but did commit four errors in the loss that led to a pair of unearned runs. Sonoraville improved to 1-3 on the season with the second game win. Shook had two hits for Cass including a double. Botts and Means also doubled with one RBI each. Smith and Melton added one hit apiece. Botts (1.1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 2H, 4BB, 3K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Logan Nelson (4.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 4BB, 5K) and Nic Wallin (1 IP, 0R, 1BB, 2K) pitched in relief. Cass (1-1) plays at Sprayberry Monday at 5:30 p.m. and travels to Rockmart Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. start.

Three of the four Bartow County Parks and Recreation youth basketball all-star teams in action Saturday came away with opening round wins at their respective tournaments. The Bartow 10U girls, Bartow 12U girls, and the Bartow Blue 10U boys were all victorious and advanced in their Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 tournaments. BARTOW 10U GIRLS 33, DALTON 13 Playing at Edwards Park in Whitfield County Saturday afternoon, the Bartow 10U girls controlled the contest throughout in a 33-13 GRPA District 5 tournament win over Dalton. Bartow 10U girls led 6-0 after one quarter, 16-5 at halftime, and 31-9 through three quarters. Kaytlin Arnold paced Bartow’s balanced scoring attack with nine points. Samantha Gough followed with seven. Alivia Joslin and Rihanna Crittenden tallied four points each. Nakayla Evans, Lakiaya Banks, and Haley Collum added three points apiece. Bartow will now face Rome in the tournament semifinals Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at Edwards Park in Whitfield County. The Cartersville boys outscored Madison County 22-10 in the final quarter, including a 12-2 run to end the game, to finish off a 59-57 come-from-behind victory Friday night in the opening round of the Class 4A State Tournament at The Storm Center. The Canes trailed until the final 8.8 seconds of the second half. The visiting Red Raiders led 15-10 after one quarter, 29-23 at the intermission, and 47-37 heading into the final period. Isaac Gridley (photo) paced the Canes with 17 points. Perignon Dyer followed with 14. Amarai Orr and Kolbe Benham also finished in double figures with 10 points each. Marquail Coaxum scored six point and Micah Tart added two. Adam Metts led Madison County with 15 points, but was held scoreless in the decisive fourth quarter. Dylan Carey and Traveon Latimore added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Red Raiders who finished the year with a 9-17 record. Cartersville (16-13) advances to the Class 4A Sweet Sixteen where the Hurricanes will either travel to Southeast Whitfield or host West Hall. Those two teams meet in a first round game Saturday night at 6 p.m. in Dalton.

After falling behind 2-0 early in the first half Friday night, the Lady Colonels soccer team found their rhythm and dominated the second half in a 4-3 home win over Sonoraville. Lupita Pineda scored a pair of goals and added one assist in the Cass come-from-behind win. Leidi Toribio and Logan Vermaas added the other Lady Colonels’ goals. One of the Pineda scores and the goal by Vermaas came off corner kicks. Toribio also contributed an assist and Maddie Shook assisted on three Cass goals. Cass (2-2) hosts Northwest Whitfield Tuesday night at 5:45 p.m. CASS BOYS 4, SONORAVILLE 0 Carlos Perez scored a pair of goals while Julian Aguirre and Magno Moreno added on goal each as the Colonels defeated visiting Sonoraville Friday night, 4-0. Slomi Orozco and Javi Duarte each had one assist. Isai Romero earned his second shutout of the season in net. Cass (2-2) entertains Northwest Whitfield at Cochran Stadium Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.

The Cass Lady Colonels entered the Class 5A state tournament as a 4-seed, but came away Friday night with an opening round win at 1-seeded Riverwood, 63-57. The host Lady Raiders led 17-13 after one period and 37-29 at halftime, but the Lady Colonels surged in the third quarter to tie the game at 41-all. In all, Cass outscored Riverwood 34-20 in the second half to escape the opening round with a six-point win. Cass senior Payton Stoddard scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and knocked down all four of her free throw attempts down the stretch. Her total included a trio of three-pointers on the night. Sharia Wade followed Stoddard with 13 points while Londaisha Wade scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Amber Brittian contributed eight. Claire Davis had five and Alexis Ware added four points for the Lady Colonels. Jasmine Green led Riverwood with 16 points. Martha Ross and Olivia Smith added 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Lady Raiders season ends with a 16-12 record. Cass (22-7) will now travel to Columbia next Wednesday or Thursday (TBD) for a Sweet Sixteen matchup. Columbia advanced Friday night with a 53-38 win at home over Loganville.

The Adairsville Tigers dropped their season opener to visiting Model Thursday night, 12-11. Model scored five times in the top of the first and led 6-2 after two innings before Adairsville tied the game in the bottom of the third, 6-6. The Tigers scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 advantage, but Model responded with four runs over the next two frames to go back ahead, 10-7. A four-run bottom of the sixth gave Adairsville an 11-10 lead, but Model went ahead again in the top of the seventh and held off the Tigers in the bottom of the frame. Adairsville out-hit Model 11-8 and the two teams combined to commit a dozen errors. The Tigers had seven defensive miscues. Daulton Waddell (3 IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 6K) was credited with the Blue Devils’ pitching win in relief of starter Connor Yarbrough (3 IP, 6R, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K). The Woodland and Cartersville girls soccer teams battled to a 5-5 draw Thursday night at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. After the Lady Canes took a 5-2 lead, the Lady Cats scored three unanswered goals over the game’s final 20 minutes to escape with a tie. Grace Webb scored four goals for Woodland and Tiera Feanny added a goal for the Lady Cats. Micah Vance scored a hat trick of goals for Cartersville. Kaylyn Donegan and Kendyl Anderson found the back of the net for the other Lady Canes’ goals. Cartersville led 3-2 at halftime and added a pair of goals in the opening portion of the second half before Woodland stormed back to force a tie. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 5, WOODLAND 1 Alex Rios scored a goal and had two assists to help lead the Hurricanes to a 5-1 home victory over Woodland Thursday night at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. Joel Zazueta and Ricardo Torres had first half goals for Cartersville. Brady Craig added a second half goal and an own goal gave Cartersville a 5-0 lead. With seven wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket and two more in the consolation rounds, the Woodland wrestling team remains in a strong position for the Class 5A State Traditional title heading into Friday’s matches. The Wildcats won the State Team Duals Championship earlier this season. Cass, also in Class 5A, has three of its nine state finals qualifiers remaining in the championship bracket and four others alive in the consolation rounds.
