- Andrew College powers past Chargers in series opener
March 18, 2025 Georgia Highlands baseball held a 5-1 lead in the middle of the third inning Tuesday at Andrew College in Cuthbert. However, the host Tigers exploded for 15 runs in their subsequent four offensive frames to power past the Chargers 16-8. The bats of Andrew College delivered 20 hits, featuring 10 extra-base hits, with three being home runs. Ryan Martin had two hits, including a homer for the Chargers. Andrew Bishop (two RBI) and Heath Whitlock also homered. Wyatt Gatlin (double), Grayson Godbee (double), and Tyler Phillips (sac fly, RBI) added one hit. Six Chargers pitched in the loss, including starter Jack Butler (3 IP, 6ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K), Braxton Wade (1.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H), Nickolaus Kane (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K), Reece Robertson (1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 1K), Brodie Chestnutt (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K), and William Homan (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K). The Tigers improved to 22-9 overall and 4-3 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (24-6, 5-3) will proceed with the week-long series against Andrew College, which will feature a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
- Chargers drop two at Wallace State-Hanceville
March 18, 2025 Faith Gauthier had a hit in each game on Tuesday at Wallace State-Hanceville. Georgia Highlands softball dropped both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Wallace State-Hanceville CC by an identical 8-0 score. The Chargers and Lions went scoreless in the opening game through three innings before Wallace State scored one run in the fourth, five in the fifth, and two more runs in the sixth. Georgia Highlands managed only two hits in Game 1. Emma Darrow tripled to start the Chargers' fourth inning and was stranded. Faith Gauthier began the top of the sixth inning with a double. Game 2 was similarly close through three innings, but the Lions broke it open with a three-run fourth inning and three runs in the sixth. Athens Hudson, Hailey Love, Raeghan Thompson, Darrow, and Gauthier had one hit each for GHC in the second game. Hayden Joyner (4.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) and Grace Kendrick (0.2 IP, 2ER, 2H) shared the Chargers’ pitching duties in the opener. Hudson (3 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K), Maci Andrews (1.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB), and Hannah Mounce (1.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) pitched in Game 2. The Lions improved to 25-6 this season. Georgia Highlands (19-11) returns to conference play on Saturday at home against Georgia Military College.
- Cartersville soccer teams win at Ringgold; Woodland falls to Bruins
March 17, 2025 Annabelle Williams (shown here in an earlier game vs. Allatoona) The Cartersville girls’ soccer team built a 4-0 lead by halftime and scored four more goals in the second half to win at Ringgold Monday night, 8-2. Annabelle Williams opened the scoring for the Lady Canes with an assist credited to Kiley McMichael. Mallory Nicklas followed with back-to-back goals for a 3-0 advantage. Mary Beth Hackney assisted on one of the Nicklas goals. Freshman Allie Evans scored her first career goal before the break off an assist from Nicklas. The Tigers narrowed the margin to 4-1 early in the second half, but a quick answer from Hackney gave Cartersville a 5-1 lead. McMichael scored the Lady Canes’ next two goals off assists from Hackney and Alexis Henderson to make the score 7-1. Nicklas found the net again, assisted by Hackney for an 8-1 lead, and the Hurricanes conceded a final goal in the 79th minute for an 8-2 final score. The loss dropped Ringgold to 1-8 on the season. Cartersville (4-5, 2-2 Region 7-4A) visits Southeast Whitfield on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2, RINGGOLD 0 Following a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes scored to goals in the second half to win a non-region match Monday night at Ringgold, 2-0. The loss dropped the host Tigers to 5-4 on the season. Cartersville (2-5, 0-4) returns to Region 7-4A action on Friday at Southeast Whitfield in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 7, WOODLAND GIRLS 3 The Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins won a non-region soccer match at Woodland Monday night, 7-3. The Woodland girls scored first and only trailed 2-1 at the intermission, but the visiting Bruins scored five goals in 21 minutes to take control. Sammie Espinoza put the Lady Cats up 1-0 in the 6th minute off an assist from Ansley Burns. Northwest Whitfield answered with goals in the 24th and 30th minutes to lead 2-1 at halftime. Espinoza opened the second half scoring in the 47th minute off a delivery from Carlie Forman, but the Lady Bruins scored five consecutive goals to lead 7-2. Burns added a Woodland goal in the 68th minute, with Espinoza providing an assist. Northwest Whitfield improved to 6-2 on the season. The Lady Cats (3-6, 2-2) return to Region 7-4A action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Hiram. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 3, WOODLAND BOYS 0 The visiting Bruins improved to 9-0 Monday night with a 3-0 win at Woodland. Northwest Whitfield led 1-0 at halftime, scoring on a penalty kick. In the second half, the Bruins scored in the 44th minute and added an insurance goal in the 56th minute off a corner kick to round out the scoring. The Wildcats (2-7, 0-4 Region 7-4A) host Hiram in a region match on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Former Woodland High School wrestlers Caleb Henson and Jaxon Smith enter the 2025 NCAA Division I Championship as top seeds beginning Thursday in Philadelphia. A Virginia Tech junior, Henson is the No. 1 seed in the 149-pound weight class. Smith, a redshirt junior at the University of Maryland, is the No. 8 seed in the 184-pound division. This week’s update includes pro basketball, MLB spring training, collegiate beach volleyball, tennis, golf, softball, and baseball highlights. CHINA CBA — PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Xinjiang Flying Tigers (6th yr. pro; Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … the Flying Tigers were 3-1 last week with Hagans, age 25, scoring a total of 33 points with 25 assists, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Xinjiang lost to Guangdong but defeated Shenzhen, Fujian, and Guangzhou. The Flying Tigers play Zhejiang on Tuesday and host Sichuan on Saturday. Xinjiang is 29-11 this season and currently in third place in the 20-team league. MLB SPRING TRAINING ANTHONY SEIGLER — Milwaukee Brewers organization (8th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … the 25-year-old infielder appeared as a pinch hitter on March 11, coaxed a walk, and played defensively at second base in a 9-7 win over the Chicago Cubs. This past Saturday, he was entered as a pinch runner and played second base in an 8-0 win over the Oakland Athletics. BEACH VOLLEYBALL LAUREN LAWSON — University of South Carolina (So., Cartersville HS) .. paired with teammate Kristen Schenck and won their Line 5 match 21-14, 21-15 in the Gamecocks’ 5-0 win over College of Charleston this past Sunday at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia. The duo also paired for a 21-3, 21-11 victory in an extra match played in the Gamecocks 3-2 win last Saturday with UNC-Wilmington. For the season, Lawson is 5-1 in matches for USC. South Carolina (8-5) travels to Phoenix to play UTEP, Grand Canyon, Washington, and Arizona State on March 28-29 in the ASU/GCU Invitational. TENNIS EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in four team matches at the Scenic City Showcase in Chattanooga, Bush went 2-2 at Line 3 doubles with teammate Renata Morales. JAXON SMITH — University of Maryland (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … Smith is the No. 8 seed in the 31-man, 184-pound weight class when the NCAA Division I Championships begin Thursday in Philadelphia. BASKETBALL CLAIRE DAVIS — Kennesaw State University (Jr., Cass HS) … scored three points and blocked one shot in the Owls’ 73-46 loss to Middle Tennessee State University in the Conference USA Tournament in Huntsville. KSU finished the year with a 13-18 record. JA’KA’YAH DRAUGHN — Chattanooga State CC (So., Cartersville HS) … scored 11 points with four rebounds and three assists in a 60-55 win over Columbia State CC on March 10. She scored 17 points with one rebound, one steal, and one assist in a 58-49 loss to Walters State CC. Both games were at the NJCAA Region VII Tournament. The Tigers finished the season with a 21-11 record. They await the announcement of the NJCAA National Tournament bracket. ZION HAYES — Weatherford College (Fr., Cass HS) … scored six points in the Coyotes’ 76-66 tournament loss to New Mexico Junior College. Weatherford was eliminated at the NJCAA Region V tournament in Waco, Texas. The Coyotes’ season ended with a 20-11 record. March 15, 2025 Former Cass Colonel Haylee Dishmon had two hits in Game 1 of the Chargers' doubleheader on Friday at Gordon State. Georgia Highlands softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Friday in Barnesville, falling to the Gordon State Highlanders 7-1 and 7-2 in conference action. Gordon led 6-1 after three innings in the opener and outhit GHC twelve to six. Hayden Joyner (2.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 10H, 2BB, 2K) and Grace Kendrick (3.1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB) shared the Game 1 pitching duties for the Chargers. Haylee Dishmon (double), Ahmani Green (RBI), and Abbi Hall (double) had two hits each for Georgia Highlands. In the second game on Friday, the host Highlanders scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off the Chargers. Gordon College pitcher Riley Haley scattered three hits and one walk in a seven-inning complete-game performance. She struck out four. - Chargers split Saturday doubleheader at East Georgia State
March 15, 2025 The Georgia Highlands College Chargers split a baseball doubleheader at East Georgia State on Saturday. They won the first game 7-3 before losing the second game 9-7. GHC rolled up seven runs in their first five offensive frames of the opener, and pitchers Andrew Arnold (5.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K) and Nickolaus Kane (1.1 IP, 0R, 2H) limited the Bobcats’ offense. Kenskey Thomas (double, four RBI) and Ali Banks (two RBI) combined for five hits at the top of the Chargers’ order to pace the offense. Grayson Godbee added two hits and one RBI. Wyatt Gatlin, Tyler Phillips, and Heath Whitlock (double) added one hit for GHC. The Chargers scored five runs in the top of the first inning of Game 2 and held a 6-5 lead through three innings, but East Georgia State scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and added a two-run homer in the fifth en route to a 9-7 win and a doubleheader split. Braxton Wade (1.1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers in relief of starter Kaiden Krak (2.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K). Jackson Greer (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) and Garrett Goblish (1 IP, 0R, 1H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for GHC. Thomas stayed hot at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Godbee produced two hits, including a homer and three RBI. Bishop (two RBI), Banks, Whitlock, Ryan Martin, and Joe Johnson added one hit in the loss. East Georgia State is 17-14 overall and 3-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association following Saturday’s split. The Chargers (24-5, 5-2) play at Andrew College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will host three more games with the Tigers on Friday and Saturday.

March 15, 2025 Cartersville's Daniel Millian The girls' teams at Adairsville, Cartersville, and Woodland earned region wins Friday night, along with the boys' teams at Adairsville and Cass. WOODLAND GIRLS 5, CASS 0 The Woodland Lady Cats posted three goals in the first half and added two more in the second to win at Cass Friday night, 5-0. Ansley Burns scored all five goals for the Wildcats, including one from the penalty spot in the 36th minute. Maddie Weightman assisted on the first goal five minutes into the match and the final goal in the 61st minute. Jackie Arias was credited with an assist in the 24th minute, and Sammie Espinoza assisted on the second half's first goal in the 47th minute. Woodland (3-5, 2-2) will host Northwest Whitfield on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region match. Cass (1-7, 1-3) will host Cedartown in a region match on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. CASS BOYS 0, WOODLAND 0 (Cass wins PKs) Cass won an intense defensive showdown with Woodland Friday night at Cochran Stadium to remain unbeaten in Region 7-AAAA. Both teams created opportunities during the match but failed to break a 0-0 deadlock through regulation and two mandatory overtime periods in a region match. Wildcats’ goalkeeper Jaime Lozano made key saves in the contest, as did Colonels’ goalkeeper Saul Villela. A stop by Villela in the ninth round of penalty kicks secured victory in sudden death. Cass converted seven out of nine kicks from the spot compared to six by Woodland. Colonels’ coach Justin Fitzgerald commended center-back Francisco Martinez for his exceptional play in the match, “He anchored a resilient backline that held firm all night.” The loss dropped Woodland to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Region 7-AAAA. The Wildcats will step outside region play on Tuesday to host Northwest Whitfield at 7:30 p.m. Cass (6-3, 4-0) hosts Cedartown on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. start. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CEDARTOWN 1 Mallory Nicklas takes a pass from MaryBeth Hackney. Kiley McMichael scored a hat trick of three goals Friday night at Cedartown and added an assist on another score, helping the Lady Canes win a Region 7-AAAA match, 5-1. Ella Grace Beaver opened the scoring with her first goal of the season. Mallory Nicklas added one goal and assisted on three. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in region play. Cartersville (2-5, 2-2) visits Ringgold on Monday for a non-region match with the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Canes return to region play at Southeast Whitfield on Friday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, LAFAYETTE 0 Addi Jerauld Addi Jerauld and Ella Edwards scored two goals each as the Adairsville Lady Tigers won at the LaFayette Ramblers on a windy Friday night, 8-0. The Adairsville girls scored four times in each half, with six different Lady Tigers finishing off goals. Samantha Gough scored unassisted in the 17th minute to put the Lady Tigers up 1-0. Five minutes later, Alivia Joslin finished off an assist from Alexa Damer for a 2-0 lead. Edwards scored the following two goals before the intermission. The first was unassisted in the 29th minute, and the next was off an assist from Braylynn Martin in the 39th minute. Damer scored two minutes into the second half off a feed from Gough, and fifteen minutes later, Jerauld found the net on a deflection to give the Lady Tigers a 6-0 advantage. Ansley Standley scored unassisted in the 64th minute, and Jerauld finished off a corner kick by Ella Edwards in the 77th minute to finalize the scoring. “Our passing has really improved,” noted Adairsville assistant coach Amanda Jones. “Victoria Loudon and Emma Edwards played very well defensively. Sam Gough and Addi Jerauld did some good work tonight as well. We feel like we are in a good place heading into a critical week of region games (Gilmer and Heritage). ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 3, LAFAYETTE 1 The Tigers scored a first-half goal and were up 1-0 at the intermission before finishing off the host Ramblers in the second half with two goals to win 3-1. Fletcher Silvers scored in the 13th minute off an assist from Carlos Limónes for Adairsville's halftime lead. In the second half, Juan Amnesty scored off an assist from Kyden Silverberg, and Limónes sealed the victory in the 51st minute off a helper from Greg Munoz. Charlie Potter had 15 saves in the net for the Tigers. "The team played as a cohesive unit," said Adairsville coach Jason McGuire, "and worked well together in all three game phases." The loss dropped LaFayette to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (4-4, 1-2) travels to Ellijay on Tuesday to take on the Gilmer Bobcats in another region match. CEDARTOWN 4, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 3 The host Bulldogs led 2-1 at halftime and matched second-half goals with the Purple Hurricanes Friday night to defeat Cartersville 4-3. March 14, 2025 Cartersville and Woodland completed region series sweeps on Friday night. The Purple Hurricanes swept a doubleheader at Cass to complete a three-game series sweep and Woodland completed the same task at home against Southeast Whitfield. In Ellijay, the Adairsville Tigers dropped the rubber game of their region series with Gilmer. GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 5, CASS 3 GAME 2: CARTERSVILLE 18, CASS 3 Nolan Elrod Cartersville baseball won both games of a doubleheader at Cass Friday night and completed a three-game series sweep of the Colonels. In Game 1, Cartersville scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed, winning 5-3. The Hurricanes took advantage of five hits, including two infield hits, to take a 4-0 lead. The Colonels responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to cut the Canes’ lead in half. Zach Stiles hit a leadoff double and later scored on a groundout. Nic Wright drove in the second Cass run with a high-hopping single into left field. Landon Lamb The following five innings went scoreless before both teams added a run in their final frame. Thomas Peters’ RBI double gave Cartersville a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh and Cass scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by Hunter Lovett. The Wildcats carried a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning in the opening game of Friday night’s doubleheader and sealed their win with a six-run frame. Woodland sent eleven men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored six runs on four hits, three walks, and a Raiders’ error. Kallen Reynolds (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) made the pitching start for the Wildcats and picked up the win. Adairsville led 2-0 midway through the third inning and was ahead 4-2 in the middle of the sixth before the host Bobcats scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Gilmer utilized three hits and two walks and took advantage of a hit batsman and two Tigers’ errors to plate their five runs in the sixth. Jarrett Scott (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Adairsville without a decision. McCayden Hufstetler (1.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss. - Chargers fall in conference semifinals
March 14, 2025 The Georgia Highlands College men’s basketball team was eliminated in the semifinals of the GCAA conference tournament Friday night at South Georgia State, 70-57. The top-seeded Hawks led 34-21 at halftime and held off the Chargers in the second half. Justin McCarter led South Georgia State with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Ashton Pennamon added 13 points for the Hawks. Cameron Baldwin paced Georgia Highlands with 25 points and 13 boards. Jah’kim Payne scored 15 points and added eight rebounds. South Georgia State will play East Georgia State on Saturday for the conference tournament title. Georgia Highlands finishes the season with an 18-12 record.
