A local 14U travel baseball team, Cartersville Purple, won the Rawlings Chaos on the Mound tournament October 14th in Dalton. Cartersville Purple won three straight games to win the tournament. They defeated West Cobb Wolfpack and Diamond Academy Baseball Legends in preliminary action before defeating Bradley (TN) Thunder, 10-9, in eight innings. Kaiden Kent rushed for 89 yards and had a five-yard touchdown run. Christen McClendon scored on a four-yard run. Maddox Raughton had 10 tackles. Kaedon Fezzia and Gatlin Fair collected seven tackles. McClendon had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Jakez Baldwin added four tackles and an interception. The loss dropped Ringgold to 3-3 in the league while Bartow improved to 5-1. With the Woodland Lady Cats winning their first-ever region title, coach Colman Roberts was honored by his fellow region coaches at the 2018 Region 7-AAAAA Coach of the Year. There were also eight Bartow County players from Woodland and Cass named to either the All-Region First Team, Second Team, or selected as Gold Glove recipients. Bella Carnes and Jordan Duck of Woodland along with Rachel Lee of Cass were named to the All-Region 7-AAAAA First Team in a recent release by region coaches. The three Bartow County players join Scout Jennings, Montana Dallas, and Olivia Fannin of Carrollton; Alyssa Salois, Adalyn Heal, and Kyra Lightner of East Paulding; Kayla Hurley and Madi Langford of Villa Rica; and Kyleigh Haney of Hiram on the First Team. In region games, Carnes hit for a .455 batting average and had a .492 on-base percentage with a .618 slugging percentage. She had six extra-base hits with 11 RBI and scored a dozen runs. Carnes was a perfect five-for-five in stolen base attempts. Duck in region action, hit for a .411 batting average and had a .431 on-base average. She added a .446 slugging percentage with a pair of doubles, 13 RBI, and 14 runs scored. Lee hit .447 in Region 7-AAAAA games with a .500 on-base average and .596 slugging percentage. She had seven doubles and 15 RBI. Lee stole three bases on three attempts. Ansley Evans, Caroline Higdon, and Kendyl Hardin of Woodland were named to the All-Region Second Team along with Erin Lee of Cass. Evans (top left) hit .381 in region contests with three extra-base hits and 5 RBI. Her on-base average was .400 and her slugging percentage was .444 with five stolen bases. Higdon (top right) hit for a .418 average in region games with a home run and 15 RBI. Her on-base average was .450 with a slugging percentage of .545. Hardin (bottom left) finished the region schedule with a .426 batting average. She blasted five home runs and had 14 RBI. Her on-base percentage was .508 with a slugging percentage of .809. She swiped three bags. Lee (bottom right) hit .319 in region games with a home run and eight RBI. Her on-base average was .418 and slugging percentage was .404. The speedster was successful on 14 of 15 stolen base attempts. Woodland first baseman Morgan Bailey, second baseman Carnes, and outfielder Higdon were named to the All-Region Gold Glove Team for their defense. Bailey had a .970 fielding percentage in 101 total chances, Carnes was at .960 (69 total chances) and Higdon was at .970 (36 total chances). The Wildcats added four players on the honorable mention list with outfielder Morgan Cooper, catcher Skylar Chappell, and pitchers Sarah Baynard and Madi Bentley.

Cartersville opens the 2018 Class AAAA State Volleyball Tournament at home this Saturday at The Storm Center with a best-of-five opening round match against Madison County at 11 a.m. Cartersville is the 1-seed and region champion from Region 5-AAAA. Madison County is a 4-seed out of Region 8-AAAA. In the other first round match — also a best-of-five sets — at The Storm Center Saturday features 2-seed LaFayette from Region 6-AAAA and 3-seed White County of Region 7-AAAA. That match is scheduled for a 12 noon start. The winners of Saturday’s matches will play one another in the second round Wednesday, October 24 at the highest remaining seed.

Former Adairsville High School quarterback Marcus Childers accounted for 314 total yards Saturday (169 rushing, 145 passing) as Northern Illinois edged Ohio University 24-21. The Woodland Middle School girls and boys cross country teams ran to state runner-up finishes Saturday at the Georgia Middle School State Cross Country Championships at Bleckley County Elementary School. The two second place finishes earned Woodland Middle the combined (both genders) state championship. Woodland Middle School girls finished runner-up to Loganville Middle Saturday at the two-mile event competing in the Large School division which included 28 teams and 205 runners. The Woodland High School cross country teams competed Saturday in the Nike/Fleet Feet Coach Wood Invitational hosted by Mill Creek High School at the McIntosh Nature Reserve. The Woodland girls finished fourth in the Championship Division which was won by Marist. Marietta finished second and South Forsyth was third. The Lady Cats were paced by McKenna Trapheagen who completed the 5K course in 17:59 and was fourth overall — only 10 seconds behind individual winner Jackie Addy of Holy Innocents’. The Cartersville boys cross country team continued a strong season Saturday with a sixth place finish in a field of 24 teams and 179 runners at the Atlanta Classic 5K at Clinton Farms hosted by Chapel Hill High School. Alexander won the boys race, followed by Jefferson and North Paulding in the top three. Zack Truitt of Landmark Christian was the individual winner in 15:52. The Hurricanes were led by a seventh place finish by Bill Archer in 16:41. Alexander girls won the event, followed by Union Grove and North Paulding. Reagan Mahoney of Atlanta International was the individual winner in 18:17. Alex Machado led the Lady Canes with a 37th place finish in 21:25. She was followed by teammates Vanna Beach (70th, 22:08), Trista Kelly (72nd, 22:12), Alice Terry (79th, 22:34), Trinity Atkins (117th, 24:03), Metztli Munoz (123rd, 24:18), and Jocelyn Blanchette (124th, 24:19). At the Pickens Invitational in Jasper on Saturday, Cass junior Olivia Flynn finished 84th out of 188 runners in 22:41.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes won a defensive struggle Friday night at Sandy Creek 7-0 as the two Class AAAA top ten teams went head to head in a slugfest in Tyrone. Meanwhile, East Paulding spoiled homecoming at Cass by racing out to a 20-0 lead in a 33-21 defeat of the Colonels and Adairsville dropped a 14-10 decision at Sonoraville. CANES WIN DEFENSIVE BATTLE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN Cartersville won a battle of Class AAAA top ten teams Friday night winning at Sandy Creek 7-0. The two teams fought to a scoreless tie through three quarters before Cartersville punched in the game’s only score in the final three minutes. The Hurricanes and Patriots had difficulty moving the football as the two defenses controlled most of the game. Cartersville’s defense pinned Sandy Creek down and forced a punt from the Patriots’ own nine yard line with about six minutes left in the game. The punt and Marko Dudley return set up Cartersville at the Patriots’ 29-yard line. Eight plays later, Marcus Gary (photo) scored on a one-yard run for the game’s only touchdown with 3:08 remaining. Gary finished the night with 125 yards on 26 carries -- 91 of those yards were in the first half. Sandy Creek drove to the Cartersville 22-yard line at the end, but Amarai Orr picked off a Patriots’ pass in the end zone to seal the Canes’ 7-0 victory. Sandy Creek slips to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (8-0, 4-0) won its 46th consecutive regular season game and travels to Chapel Hill next Friday. SLUGGISH START DOOMS COLONELS For the second week in a row, Cass fell behind 20-0 before making it a full-tilt battle the remainder of the game. The deficit again proved to be too much for the Colonels to overcome, however, as they fell Friday night in a 33-21 loss to visiting East Paulding. Tyrell Robinson -- who rushed for 220 yards on 29 carries in the contest -- scored four touchdowns for the Raiders including three in the first quarter. The senior running back returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a 6-0 lead and added touchdown runs of 35- and 37-yards as East Paulding took a 20-0 advantage on the first play of the second quarter. Cass made it 20-7 at halftime with a 12-play, 93-yard drive. Rett Moore capped the scoring effort with a one-yard keeper and Kaleb Speights added the first of his three PAT kicks. Moore (photo) then found Malik Grimes for a 27-yard touchdown pass on the Colonels’ first possession of the second half to narrow the East Paulding lead to 20-14. The Raiders answered, however, with a Parker O’Neil touchdown run to cap a 59-yard scoring drive. With East Paulding leading 26-14, Cass needed only two plays to score on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Javen Bridges and the Colonels trailed 26-21 with 9:25 left. Both teams had possessions before the Raiders put the game away with an 8-play, 58-yard drive culminated by Robinson’s fourth touchdown from nine yards out with only 0:50 left. Moore passed for 120 yards, rushed for 102 yards and was part of all three Cass touchdowns. Javen Bridges had two receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown, while Grimes had one 27-yard touchdown reception. East Paulding stayed alive in the state playoff race and improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Raiders host rival Paulding County next Friday night. Cass (1-7, 0-6) travels to Kell next Friday. TIGERS' PLAYOFF CHANCES TAKE MAJOR HIT IN LOSS AT SONORAVILLE The Adairsville Tigers scored the game’s final 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to upend the Sonoraville Phoenix on the road Friday night in a 14-10 loss. Sonoraville scored all of its points in the first quarter with Cole Godfrey’s two touchdown passes to Blade Bryant and Colton Richards. Then Adairsville scored its 10 points in the second quarter. Landon Ayers got the Tigers on the board with a 29-yard touchdown run with 11:20 remaining in the half. Then with only 0:06 remaining before halftime, the Tigers’ Emmanuel Lopez kicked a 20-yard field goal that narrowed the Phoenix lead to 14-10 at the intermission. Both defenses stood tall in the second half, but Adairsville had a chance to take the lead after taking over a first-and-goal at the Sonoraville four-yard line in the fourth quarter. Faced with fourth down at their own 20-yard line, Sonoraville was hit with three simultaneous penalties, including the ejection of their head coach. Punting from their own two-yard line after the penalties were assessed, a shanked kick gave Adairsville the ball at the Phoenix four. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they could not punch it in and the Sonoraville goal line stand stopped Adairsville at the one-yard line. From there, the two teams exchanged possessions with the Tigers selecting to punt from the Sonoraville 38 yard line in the final minutes. Sonoraville's Case Collins then provided some nice runs to keep the clock moving and help seal the victory. Mason Boswell had 55 rushing yards for Adairsville on 15 carries and finished 4-for-14 passing for 38 yards and one interception. Landon Ayers added 59 yards on 12 attempts with a 29-yard scoring run. Michael Cook had five carries for 25 yards. The Phoenix improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-5, 1-4) will look to bounce back next week at home against winless Murray County.

Cartersville volleyball won the Region 5-AAAA championship for the third straight season Thursday night with wins over Troup and Central-Carroll at The Storm Center. The region title earns Cartersville a No. 1-seed heading into the Class AAAA state tournament that begins October 20. Troup took the Lady Canes to three sets in their best-of-three semifinal match. Cartersville dropped the middle set 27-25 but won the first set 25-16 and the third set 25-23 to earn a spot in the finals. Rebekah Stevens had 15 kills, 12 digs, and eight aces in the semifinals. Nedu Evans posted 11 kills and 11 digs. Grace Hunter contributed 36 assists with four aces. Anna Grace Brock had 10 digs, eight kills, and three aces. Anna Mathis added 14 digs and three aces. In the best-of-five championship match, the Lady Canes swept to a 3-0 win. Cartersville won the opening set 25-19, the middle set 25-12, and closed out the match with a 25-20 set victory. Stevens and Evans had 14 kills each. Stevens also had eight digs and three aces. Evans posted nine digs. Brock added nine kills and ten digs. Mathis contributed 11 digs and a pair of aces. “We played well in the finals,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “We had a few little runs where we weren’t as sharp as I would like to be, but we were able to get things straightened out before too much damage was done.” Cothran also commented on the program’s consistency. “I’m ecstatic to win a third consecutive region championship,” he noted. “Our girls have worked really hard.” Cartersville (23-11) will host the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs starting October 20 at The Storm Center. The Lady Canes will host the No. 4-seed from Region 8-AAAA.

Cass volleyball and Woodland volleyball had their 2018 seasons come to an end Thursday at the Area 7-AAAAA tournament. The Lady Colonels defeated Paulding County 25-16 and 25-17, but then lost to Kell in straight sets 25-12 and 25-17. That set up an elimination match for Cass against East Paulding that went three sets. Cass won the opener 25-21, but lost the final two sets 25-10 and 25-20. The Lady Colonels were led by outstanding play from the senior front line of Blaire Waters, Alexis Ware, and Harmony Carr. Senior Mariya Hernandez also had a great night on the back row. “We return six players to the varsity team next season,” said Cass coach Alan Potter. “With the experience gained this season, we expect to have a great year.” Woodland fell in a tough, three-set match before losing their finale' in straight sets. The Lady Cats lost to Villa Rica in three sets, winning the first set 25-23 before losing the next two 25-11 and 25-23. Woodland then lost to Hiram in an elimination match 25-18 and 27-25.
