Angel Banda, Jody Sutton and Austin Jackson all placed third in their weight classes for Adairsville during the traditional tournament in Dalton. Doss Dudley, Brendan Luginbuhl and Cody Shook finished in fourth. Bryce Kresho and Kendall Arnold each went undefeated for Cass at their tournament in Tennessee. Isaac Linley, Noah Hoffmeier and Hunter Rees also were noted for strong tournament performances for the Colonels.

The Cass girls remained unbeaten Saturday with a one-sided win over East Paulding while the Adairsville girls kept Calhoun winless on the season. The Cass boys also came out on top with East Paulding. It was the Colonels' first region win of the young season. CASS GIRLS 93, EAST PAULDING 57 Payton Stoddard led the Lady Colonels with 24 points Saturday as the Lady Colonels stayed unbeaten with a 93-57 Region 7-AAAAA victory. The game was still in question at halftime with Cass leading 49-40, but the Lady Colonels extended their lead to 75-50 in the third quarter and were not challenged from there. Freshman Claire Davis finished with 20 points for the Lady Colonels. Londaisha Smith scored 17, Sharia Wade 10, and Amber Brittian eight for Cass. Ariana Hames scored five points, Alexis Ware four points, Brianna Stephenson and Justice Bennett added two points each while Taryn Callahan chipped in one for the Lady Colonels. The loss dropped the Lady Raiders to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in region play. Cass (7-0, 3-0) will host 10th-ranked Rome Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and hit the road for the weekend at Carrollton Friday and at Woodland Saturday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 69, CALHOUN 58 The Lady Tigers used a strong third quarter surge and 36 points and 15 rebounds from Nikiyah Washington (photo) to defeat Calhoun Saturday, 69-58. Adairsville led 13-11 after one quarter and 29-28 at halftime before racing out to a 50-39 advantage after three periods. Havyn Isaac added 12 points for Adairsville on four three-point baskets. Aaliyah Applin contributed eight. Breanna Wilson scored five. Coriana McDaniel had four points while Alexa Varner and Lori Cimino added two points each. Ashlyn Brzozoski led Calhoun (0-6, 0-4) with 27 points. Adairsville improved to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Region 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers travel to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Tuesday, host Haralson County Friday and Murray County Saturday. Following Saturday’s Adairsville win, the Lady Tigers honored Washington as the fifth Adairsville Lady Tiger basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in her career. Washington scored 314 points in 29 games as a freshman. She added 294 points in 22 games as a sophomore, and scored 308 points in her junior season. In her first six games this season Washington eclipsed the 1,000 point threshold in a game at Sonoraville. Washington — a four-year starter — has averaged over 12 points per game during her career. CASS BOYS 78, EAST PAULDING 57 The Colonels picked up their first Region 7-AAAAA win Saturday at East Paulding, 78-57. East Paulding led 21-16 after the first eight minutes, but Cass knotted the score at 33 by halftime. The Colonels then outscored the Raiders 23-10 in the third quarter to gain contraol. Jacquez Fountain (photo) led the Colonels’ scoring attack with 26 points. Justice Hayes followed with 14 and Ethan Carter added 10 for Cass. Jordan Ford scored nine. Brandon Benham and Zaylan Chaney totaled six points each. C.J. Pipken had four and Jaylon Johnson chipped in with three points Silas Johnson led East Paulding (4-4, 1-2) with 18 points. Azer Tidor added 13 for the Raiders. Cass (3-5, 1-2) host Rome Tuesday before traveling to Carrollton Friday and across town to Woodland on Saturday afternoon. CALHOUN 67, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 61 The Tigers trailed early and were behind 38-28 at halftime before threatening a comeback late. Calhoun (3-2, 3-2) held on Saturday, however, for a 67-61 Region 6-AAA win. Adding to Adairsville’s frustration on the night, the Tigers missed 15 free throws on 27 attempts in the game. Mason Boswell led the Adairsville scoring with 20 points. Savaun Henderson finished with 12 points. Gaven Crunkelton had 10. Adairsville (2-4, 2-3) travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday night, hosts Haralson County Friday and Murray County Saturday. DARLINGTON 54, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 40 Darlington grabbed a 29-21 lead by halftime and extended that lead in the second half for a 54-40 win Saturday at Excel Christian Academy. Barrick Wade hit six three-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead the visiting Tigers. JD Hull and Andrew Land had 16 and 14 points, respectively for Darlington. Rayshawn Womack paced Excel with 19 points. Jacob Day finished with eight for the Eagles. The loss was a fourth-straight for Excel who is now 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Region 6-A. It was a difficult night for the five local high school boys basketball teams in Bartow County. All five local teams lost. Adairsville lost a Region 6-AAA game in overtime at Coahulla Creek. Woodland dropped a road region game while Cass lost at home to unbeaten Paulding County. Excel lost to perennial region power North Cobb Christian at home and Cartersville dropped a non-region game at North Paulding. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 74, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 34 Kamran Hall scored 16 points while Kami Young and Tre Chatman added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as visiting North Cobb Christian won at Excel Christian 74-34. Excel trailed 30-13 at the intermission and was down 59-23 after three quarters. Robbie Poston scored 10 points for the Eagles. Rayshawn Womack and Josiah Mosley finished with nine points each. Garrett Goff had 16, Kevin Wirth 15, and Jacob Harris 14 for North Paulding (8-1). Isaac Gridley paced the Purple Hurricanes with 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three block shots. PAULDING COUNTY 89, CASS BOYS 55 Paulding County led 29-11 after the first eight minutes and never looked back in an 89-55 Region 7-AAAAA win at Cass Friday night in White. Keon Sedgwick and John Cook paced the Patriots with 16 points apiece. Jacquez Fountain led Cass with 19 points. Justice Hayes and Ethan Carter added 10 each. The Patriots stayed unbeaten with a 7-0 overall record and improved to 2-0 in region action. The game went to overtime tied 34-all. The Colts led 18-12 at halftime and 27-20 after three quarters, but the Tigers forced the extra session by outscoring Coahulla Creek 14-7 in the fourth quarter. Gage Seibenhenor led the Colts (5-3, 2-2) and all scorers in the game with 19 points. Mason Boswell had 11 for Adairsville. Savaun Henderson finished with eight points and Malachi Gardner totaled seven. Gaven and Connor Crunkelton had four each for the Tigers. Tyshawn Savage added two points. The Cass girls took care of business with Paulding County Friday night to remain a perfect 6-0 on the season while the Cartersville girls suffered their first loss of the year at Class 7A North Paulding. Woodland High School girls cross country coach Matthew Landolt has been selected by the Georgia Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the Girls Class 5A Cross Country Coach of the Year. The recognition for Landolt comes following the Lady Cats’ second state title in the past three seasons. In early November, the Woodland girls captured the GHSA Class 5A championship by edging McIntosh. The Lady Cats had all five scoring runners finish inside the top 20 of the 199-runner field and all seven runners in the top 44. The 2018 state championship team was led by McKenna Trapheagen who won the individual state championship. The other top runners for the Lady Cats were Carli Clymer, Angela Cochran, Rylee Evans, Baylee Evans, Cheyenne Spinks, and Marlee Bowles. "This award is far more about the hard work and dedication of our student athletes than anything I've done personally," said Landolt. "It has been a privilege to be part of the journey for so many of these runners."

The Cass and Woodland girls along with the Adairsville boys each won important region basketball games Tuesday night. CASS GIRLS 78, KELL 47 The Lady Colonels had five players reach double figures Tuesday night as they overwhelmed visiting Kell, 78-47, in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Claire Davis (photo) led Cass with 13 points while Londaisha Smith, Sharia Wade, Payton Stoddard, and Ariana Hanes all posted 12 points each. The Lady Colonels led 24-7 after the opening eight minutes and bolted to a 41-16 lead by halftime. Cass maintained a 55-31 lead heading into the final period. Kya Williams scored 17 points for the visiting Longhorns. Grace Elkins added 15 and Makenzie Franklin scored 12 for Kell (3-2). In addition to the five players in double figures, Alexis Ware added nine point for Cass. Amber Brittian and Abby Stoddard scored three and Taryn Callahan added two points. The Lady Tigers trailed by only five points at halftime, 31-26, but the Lady Phoenix outscored Adairsville 26-13 in the third quarter and 20-10 in the final period to pull away. “We played well in spots,” said Adairsville coach Michael Roberson. “We just didn’t put a full 32-minutes together.” Sonoraville (4-2, 2-1) had four players reach double figures in scoring. The visiting Longhorns (4-1, 2-0) had five players finish in double figures, led by Rakim Thompson with 24 points. The visiting Raiders led 16-12 after one quarter, but Woodland held a 35-31 advantage at halftime. East Paulding regained the lead after three quarters, 50-47, and held on in the final eight minutes for a one-point Region 7-AAAAA win. The host Bulldogs grabbed a 24-15 lead in the first quarter and led 45-29 at halftime. Trion pushed their advantage to 58-38 after three quarters. Austin Mason made eight three-pointers in the first half on his way to a game-high 26 points to lead Trion. Brier Ingle added 25 points for the Bulldogs who improved to 2-2 on the year. It was a big week again for local college quarterbacks and Vic Beasley scored his second NFL defensive touchdown. Former Cartersville High School Hurricane Trevor Lawrence picked up Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors and helped guide his Clemson Tigers to a 42-10 rout of Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship Game. In the Mid-American Conference Championship Game, former Adairsville High School quarterback Marcus Childers led a huge comeback victory as Northern Illinois rallied for a 30-29 win over Buffalo to reach the Boca Raton Bowl later this month. Meanwhile in the NFL, Adairsville native Beasley scored his second NFL career touchdown Sunday with a 74-yard fumble return for touchdown. His Atlanta Falcons, however, lost to the visiting Baltimore Ravens to slip to 4-8 on the season. PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL A.J. Mosby (Northern Arizona Suns, NBA G-League; Cartersville) — Mosby saw action in one game for the Suns this past week, playing 21 minutes in a 127-106 loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday. Elijah Robinson (Club Atletico Villa San Martin, Argentine League; Excel Christian) — Robinson was a steady rebounding presence across Villa San Martin's three games this past week, although his scoring efficiency fluctuated. He pulled down six rebounds apiece in two losses and a win. Robinson scored 12 points in a defeat to Hindu Club de Resistencia Chaco last Tuesday; he bounced back with 19 points and three assists in a victory over Independiente de Santiago Del Estero Friday; and he put up just six points in a loss to Olimpico Ceres Sunday. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Mark Chester (Georgia Northwestern Tech CC Fr., Cass) — Chester totaled seven points as the Bobcats split their two most recent games — a 79-67 loss to Welch College and a 68-64 triumph over Southern States CC. Ryan Davis (Francis Marion Sr., Cartersville) — Davis posted 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in an 82-79 win over North Georgia on Saturday. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls Fr., Woodland) — Harris had just four points in a loss to Brevard College but erupted for 16 on 5-of-11 shooting from deep in a defeat against Warren Wilson College this past week. In the loss to Brevard, she added two each of rebounds, assists and steals. Against Warren Wilson, Harris had two rebounds and a steal. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State So., Cartersville) — McClinic finished with four points, a rebound and a steal in seven minutes of action in a 65-59 victory against Blue Mountain (Mississippi) on Thursday. Jana Morning (Berry College So., Cass) — Morning contributed two points, two assists and a steal in a 68-62 loss to Emory on Friday. Jonathan Pritchett (Vermont Tech CC So., Woodland) — Pritchett struggled shooting the ball during the Knights' three games this past week, finishing with just one total point, but he made up for it with 17 total assists and eight total rebounds. Vermont Tech went 1-2 in the span. Jaylon Pugh (Furman Fr., Cartersville) — Pugh didn't see the floor in a 90-88 double-overtime win over Western Carolina in Furman's Southern Conference opener Saturday. Thanks to their 8-0 start, the Paladins landed in the AP Top 25 — at No. 25 — for the first time in school history. Josie Summerville (North Park Fr., Adairsville) — Summerville went scoreless with five rebounds in her first collegiate start Wednesday in a win over Aurora. She had four points and five rebounds Saturday in a loss to Wheaton (Illinois). Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Jr., Excel Christian) — Thrower played 18 scoreless minutes across two games this past week. The Bears fell to Milligan (Tennessee) Wednesday, but they bounced back to beat Morris (South Carolina) on Saturday with Thrower chipping in three assists in the 92-90 win. PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL Vic Beasley Jr. (Atlanta Falcons; Adairsville) — Beasley scored his second career touchdown on a 74-yard fumble return in Sunday's game against Baltimore. The touchdown gave Atlanta a 10-7 lead in an eventual 26-16 loss. Beasley added two tackles in the defeat. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Marcus Childers (Northern Illinois R-So., Adairsville) — Childers pulled off a comeback for the ages to lead the Huskies to the MAC title on Friday. Trailing 29-10 late in the third quarter, Childers threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Brown. A few minutes later, he tossed a 32-yard score to Spencer Tears to pull NIU within 29-24. He completed with the rally with a 35-yarder to Brown to give the Huskies a 30-29 lead with 1:09 to go. In the victory, Childers went 21-for-33 with exactly 300 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, while adding a team-leading 58 yards on the ground. NIU will face UAB in the Boca Raton (Florida) Bowl at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18. Kurtis Feanny (Lenioir-Rhyne Fr., Woodland) — Feanny participated in the Division-II national quarterfinal against No. 3 Valdosta State, but Lenoir-Rhyne saw its season come to a close with a 61-21 defeat. Jordan Ferguson (Middle Tennessee State So., Cartersville) — Ferguson recorded two tackles (one solo) in a 27-25 loss to UAB in the Conference USA Championship Game Saturday. Miller Forristall (Alabama R-So., Cartersville) — Forristall saw action as No. 1-ranked Alabama rallied to beat Georgia, 35-28, Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. Gabriel Gridley (Angelo State Jr., Cartersville) — Gridley punted six times for an average of 39 yards in ASU's 41-34 defeat to Central Oklahoma in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on Saturday. Gridley had two punts inside the 20-yard line and boomed a long of 54 yards. Trevor Lawrence (Clemson Fr., Cartersville) — The recently named ACC Rookie of the Year, Lawrence helped guide Clemson to its fourth consecutive ACC title in a 42-10 rout of Pitt on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lawrence didn't set the world ablaze, completing 12 of 24 pass attempts for 118 yards. However, his two touchdown passes — 5- and 10-yarders to Tee Higgins — were key, as both came in the last five minutes of the first half to turn a 14-10 edge into a comfortable 28-10 advantage. WRESTLING Jake Huffine (Chattanooga Jr., Woodland) — Huffine placed second in the Cougar Clash Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois. He won his opening match by fall, and then earned a 6-4 decision to advance to the title match. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department’s U10 girls soccer team won the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) state championship Saturday afternoon at the Nix Complex Causby Field in Dalton. To reach the state championship game, Bartow U10 defeated District 7 runner-up Jackson County, 5-2, Friday night and Wayne County 6-0 Saturday morning. Bartow County reached the state tournament as GRPA District 5 champions. In the state title match, Bartow narrowly edged District 1 champion Columbia County 7-6 in a thriller. In the win over Jackson County, Ella Edwards scored four goals and Emma Edwards added a goal. Ella Edwards posted two goals in the 6-0 win over Wayne County. Carly Edwards, Emma Edwards, Kiley McMichael, and Zoe Bailey each added a score. In the championship match, Ella Edwards scored three times and Carly Edwards scored twice. Kiley McMichael and Bailey DeBoard both added a goal. Recipients for November 2018: Amber Brittian, Cass HS A'mya Davis, Cartersville HS Caleb Henson, Woodland HS Kalil Holley, Excel Christian Academy Coriana McDaniel, Adairsville HS The November Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cass High School is Amber Brittian. Brittian is a starting point guard for the Lady Colonels’ basketball team and one of the team’s captains. She is currently averaging 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists during the early portion of the 2018-19 season. Brittian is recognized for her displays of true leadership. She is a dedicated athlete and has the determination to excel according to her coaches. She is constantly encouraging her teammates and always has a positive attitude. Brittian also excels in the classroom where she has maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She is the daughter of Ted and Ollie Brittian. A’mya Davis is the Cartersville High School November Elite Athlete of the Month. A senior on the Lady Canes’ basketball team, Davis is a three-year starter at point guard. The daughter of Caretta Fezzia and Tyrone Davis, A’mya is averaging over nine points per game as Cartersville has started the season, 3-0. “Mya is a great role model,” said Lady Canes’ head coach Cindy Moore. “She works hard every day and encourages her teammates to bring their best. She is a vocal leader and pushes our entire team toward improvement every day.” Davis is a Gate Key Scholar and plans to go into nursing or some aspect of the medical field after high school graduation. Caleb Henson is the Woodland High School November Elite Athlete of the Month. The son of Dave and Tai Henson, Caleb is a freshman on the Wildcats’ wrestling team. Henson recently placed sixth at the Super 32 Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina and became the first freshman to receive All-American recognition at this prestigious event. The Woodland wrestling season is in its early stages, but Henson remains undefeated in the 126-pound weight class. The November Elite Athlete of the Month for Excel Christian Academy is Kalil Holley. A sophomore, combo-guard on the Eagles’ basketball team, Holley posted 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists as ECA won its season opener. “Kalil has worked so hard this summer to improe his conditioning and his game,” said Excel boys coach and athletic director Shannon Boatfield. “The results speak for themselves. He has grown into one of the key cogs in our team.” Holley is the son of Sebastian and Sincerely Holley. Adairsville High School’s November Elite Athlete of the Month is Coriana McDaniel. The daughter of Dana and Corey McDaniel, she is a senior guard for the Lady Tigers’ basketball team. McDaniel earned Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club athlete of the month last year for Adarisville as a junior and this season has been one of the Lady Tigers’ true leaders. She has averaged better than eight points per game and is recognized for her leadership by example. “Coriana is a good, character kid who never complains,” said Adairsville girls’ basketball head coach Michael Roberson. “She accepts constructive criticism from her coaches and tries to make those changes. Her work ethic is excellent and she pushes herself daily at practices.” McDaniel has earned her pharmacy tech certificate and sports medicine certificate while attending the Bartow County College and Career Academy. The third annual LakePoint Basketball Showcase will take place Saturday, December 15 at the LakePoint Champions Center in Emerson and will feature a trio of high school boys games. The Showcase, presented by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, will tip off at 3 p.m. with North Cobb Christian playing Dacula. McCallie School (TN) will face Kennesaw Mountain in a 4:30 p.m. pairing, and Holy Innocents will take on Starrs Mill in the 6 p.m. nightcap.
