Adairsville cross country runner, Evan Crane, finished in the top half of the Region 6-AAA cross country championship race Tuesday at Resaca Battlefield Historic Site. Crane was the only Adairsville runner to compete in either the girls or boys region meet. Crane, a junior, finished 26th of 53 runners in 20:36.92. Murray County senior Jesse Martinez won the 5K event in 16:34.77 -- more than 33 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. Calhoun won the boys' team championship with Coahulla Creek finishing second. Sonoraville was third and Murray County placed fourth. Freshman Kaylee Bandy of Coahulla Creek won the girls' race in 20:46.43 and led the Lady Colts to a runner-up finish behind Calhoun. Murray County placed third in the girls championship and Sonoraville was fourth.

Cartersville volleyball defeated visiting Lafayette Wednesday night at The Storm Center to advance to the Round of 8 in the GHSA Class AAAA State Volleyball Tournament. After winning the opening set, the Lady Canes lost the second set in the best-of-five match but took the final two sets for a 3-1 victory. “Lafayette made some adjustments after the first set and they were up 16-4 in set three, but we rallied back to win it,” said Cartersville head coach Dustin Cothran. “Bekah Stevens was great for us tonight and while Nedu (Evans) had a few tough moments, she made some big swings when it mattered most.” Cartersville won the opening set 25-21 before the visiting Ramblers took Set 2, 25-22. The Lady Canes then won the final two sets 25-23 and 25-18 to secure the second round victory. Stevens had 17 kills and eight digs while Evans (photo) had 14 kills and nine digs. Grace Hunter dished out 38 assists and had four service aces. Anna Mathis contributed nine digs, while Anna Grace Brock finished with eight digs and seven kills. “Lafayette had a good offense,” added Cothran. “I feel like the girls did a great job defensively against them.” Cartersville (25-11) travels to Region 3-AAAA champion Richmond Academy in Augusta Saturday for the state quarterfinals. The other Class AAAA quarterfinal matchups Saturday include St. Pius at Northside-Columbus, Marist at Woodward Academy, and Northwest Whitfield at Columbus. The Cartersville/Richmond Academy winner will host the St. Pius/Northside winner in the state semifinals October 30.

Seven Cartersville softball players were named to the All-Region 5-AAAA team released earlier this week. The team was selected by the region's coaches and included a first, team, second team, and honorable-mention list. Sophomore outfielder Anna Kate McElhaney was named to the first team with a .378 batting average in region play. Her on-base percentage tied for first with teammate Colbi Ballard at .410. Ballard, a senior pitcher, and junior catcher Lauren McElhaney landed on the second team. Senior Presley Edwards, sophomore Mattie Johnson, and juniors Cio Seigler and Hope Short were named honorable-mention. Ballard finished with a 4-6 win-loss record in the circle during region play. She hit for a .371 batting average with a .410 on-base percentage and .486 slugging percentage. She added 12 RBIs. Lauren McElhaney hit .306 and led the team in walks against region opponents. She was also recognized for her defensive play behind the plate. As designated player, Edwards hit to a triple-slash line of .278/.297/.444. She had three doubles and a homer. Johnson, also recognized for her defensive play finished region play with no errors. Seigler scored 10 runs and had six RBIs. Short had a double, triple and a home run with four RBIs and six runs scored.

Former Woodland High School softball standout, Jamie Fitzpatrick — now Jamie Jones — was inducted into the Kent State University Hall of Fame in ceremonies this past Saturday morning. The 40th Hall of Fame ceremony inducted nine new members to the Varsity “K” Athletics Hall of Fame. Jones (Fitzpatrick) finished her career (2005-2008) as Kent State's all-time leader in home runs (36) and runs batted in (120). An All-MAC First Team selection, she helped the Golden Flashes to a pair of MAC regular season titles (2007, 2008) and a pair of MAC Tournament crowns. She also earned MAC Tournament MVP honors in 2008 as the Flashes went on to win a program record 46 games, reaching the NCAA Regional finals. The Hall of Fame event took place in the Student Center Ballroom at Kent State Saturday morning with the 2018 induction class also recognized during Kent State's football game against Akron.

Vic Beasley had one tackle in Monday night’s 23-20 win over the New York Giants at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Falcons led 10-3 at halftime and took a 20-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Giants scored a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes. A Giorgio Tavecchio 56-yard field goal with just under two minutes remaining between those two New York touchdowns made the difference. Tavecchio was signed this week by Atlanta for injured kicker Matt Bryant. Beasley, an Adairsville native, heads into the Falcons’ bye week with a total of six tackles, one sack, and one pass defended through the first seven games. Atlanta’s first round choice in 2015 (8th overall) out of Clemson, Beasley’s Monday night stop gives him 101 tackles in his four-year career. Atlanta (3-4) is currently in fourth place in the NFC South behind division-leading New Orleans (5-1), Carolina (4-2), and Tampa Bay (3-3). The Falcons, who are winless on the road this season, return to action Sunday, November 4 at Washington and follow that with a road game at Cleveland on November 11. Mowry also played 20 minutes off the bench and took one shot on goal Saturday in a 3-0 loss at Catawba College. Anderson (6-6-1, 5-2-1 South Atlantic Conference) plays conference games at Coker College Wednesday evening and at home against Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday afternoon.

Former Cartersville High School basketball standout A.J. Mosby was selected Saturday in the second round of the 2018 NBA G-League Draft (36th overall) by the Northern Arizona Suns. The 6-3 guard was a Second Team, All-Southwestern Athletic Conference player at Alcorn State in his final two collegiate seasons. He was also a former All-Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association player for Chattahoochee Tech. Following his senior season as team captain at Alcorn State, Mosby was named Second Team HBCU All-America after leading the Braves in scoring, assists, steals, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. He netted 27 double-figure scoring games in 2017-18 including six, 20-plus contests. On the season, Mosby averaged 15.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 32.2 minutes per outing with a 1.9 assist:turnover ratio. He helped the Braves lead the SWAC in assists per game with 13.1 as a team. Mosby shot .400 from beyond-the-arc which ranks third all-time in Alcorn single-season history and .866 from the free throw line which ranks second in the school's single-season record book. He completed his junior college career as Chatt Tech’s all-time leading scorer and while at Cartersville High helped lead the Canes to their best single-season record in history at 27-2. The 27-team NBA G-League is the official minor league for the NBA. The league plays a 50-game regular season schedule that runs through March 23. The regular season is followed by a four-round, 12-team playoff format Northern Arizona opens its season this Saturday afternoon at the UCLA Health Training Center in Los Angeles against the South Bay Lakers at 3 p.m.

The Cartersville volleyball team opened the 2018 Class 4A State Tournament at home Saturday with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-11 win over Madison County. With the straight sets victory, Cartersville advances to the Round of 16 to face Lafayette Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at The Storm Center. Lafayette also swept on Saturday, defeating White County 25-22, 25-18, and 25-23. “Madison came out and played a tough match,” said Lady Canes’ head coach Dutch Cothran. “They are relatively young, so I expect them to be a solid team into the future.” Cartersville took early leads in each set and was able to build leads throughout the day. “We did a good job keeping ourselves out of high-stress situations,” noted Cothran. “We were able to sustain a three or four point lead most of the match before pulling away near the end of each set.” Cothran was pleased with his team’s overall performance. Nedu Evans had 14 kills, eight digs, and two service aces. Bekah Stevens contributed nine kills and six digs. Grace Hunter (photo above) had 32 assists and three aces. Anna Mathis added 10 digs, while Anna Grace Brock (photo below) had six kills, seven digs, and three aces. “Our serve receive could be better, but I am happy with a win and the opportunity to extend our season.” Cothran added. Following the victory, Cothran briefly looked ahead at his Lady Canes’ second round opponent. “I feel like we match up well with Lafayette. They are a good team, so I would expect Wednesday to be a tightly contested battle.”
