- CPRD 12U boys win pre-district warm-up tourney
The Cartersville Parks and Recreation 12U boys basketball team won its pre-district warm-up tournament this weekend played in Calhoun. Cartersville won four games in the three-day event with wins over Calhoun, Bartow, and Gordon County twice. Cartersville defeated Bartow County in the morning round 24-19. Jamarian Pullum led Bartow with seven points. Kamarion Profit and Nick Kennedy added three. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation 10U Blue boys lost in its championship game to Calhoun, 29-27. Jakai Baldwin scored nine points. Jakez Baldwin finished with eight. Earlier in the day, Bartow 10U Blue defeated Summerville 35-29. Jabari Burleson had 13 points. The Bartow 8U girls edged Calhoun 9-7 in the morning round with Samantha Gough scoring all nine points. Bartow lost to Gordon County in the finals 16-12. The Bartow 8U Blue boys lost to Calhoun 23-6 in the tournament finals. Christian McClendon was the leading scorer for Bartow with four points. Earlier in the day, McClendon scored nine and Liam Lujan seven as Bartow topped Gilmer 34-13. Bartow 12U girls were edged by Gilmer 21-18. Kelsey Gleason led Bartow with 5 points. Emma Hensley and Gabriella Becerra added 3 points each.
- Canes to face Sandy Creek for region title
T.J. Horton scored 33 points and Jaylon Pugh had 16 as the Cartersville boys advanced to the Region 5-AAAA Tournament finals with a 69-55 win Friday night over LaGrange. Isaac Gridley scored six; Luke Schiltz, Perignon Dyer, and JKobe Orr contributed four each; and Marko Dudley had two points for the Hurricanes. Bo Russell led the Grangers (18-10) with 21 points. Daz Williams had 16. Cartersville trailed 12-10 after one quarter, but took a 30-21 lead at halftime and a 42-31 advantage to the fourth quarter. Cartersville (19-5) plays Sandy Creek (22-5) for the region title Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Sandy Creek High School. The Patriots defeated Troup County Friday 76-47 in the other region semifinal game. Both Cartersville and Sandy Creek will host Class AAAA first round games next week in the state playoffs. Following Saturday’s region title game, the Canes will host either Ridgeland or Heritage-Catoosa in the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. PAULDING COUNTY BOYS 65, CASS 53 The Cass boys lost the third place game at the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament Friday afternoon at Paulding County High School. The Colonels fell to the host Patriots, 65-53. Both teams will start the state playoffs next weekend on the road. Paulding County will be the 3-seed. Cass will be the 4-seed. Hiram upset Villa Rica 48-43 Friday night in the Region 7-AAAAA championship game to take the 1-seed. Villa Rica will be the 2-seed in the state playoffs. Cass (17-11) will travel to the Region 8-AAAAA champions for their opening game in the state tournament. No. 1-ranked Buford (21-4) and No. 9 Clarke Central (20-5) play Saturday for that region title.
- Colonels fall in region semifinals, play Friday for third
The Cass boys basketball team lost to top-seeded Villa Rica Thursday night in the semifinals of the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament, 69-45. The loss drops the Colonels (17-10) into the third place game Friday against host Paulding County (14-13) at 5:30 p.m. The loss also means Cass will open the 2018 state playoffs on the road as either a 3- or 4-seed, pending the outcome of Friday's game. Villa Rica (24-1) will play Hiram (19-9) for the region championship at 8:30 p.m., also at Paulding County High School. 8-AAAAA qualifiers Buford, Flowery Branch, Cedar Shoals, and Clarke Central are the potential opponents for Cass in the opening round of the state tournament.
- Youth recreation basketball all-star teams prep for district tourneys
Youth all-star basketball teams from the Bartow County Parks & Recreation Department and the Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department will prepare for their respective GRPA District Tournaments by playing in Pre-District Warm-Up Tournaments over the next few days. The Bartow 8U girls and boys, Bartow 10U girls and boys, Bartow 12U girls and boys, and the Cartersville 12U boys will play in tournaments in Calhoun and Gordon County Thursday through Saturday. The Cartersville 10U boys will participate in an 8-team, pre-district tournament hosted by Murray County Parks & Recreation in Chatsworth at Veterans Park and Gladden Middle School. That tournament begins Saturday and continues through Thursday, February 15. - Tigers fall to Bremen at region tourney
The Adairsville Tigers hopes of advancing to the Class AAA state playoffs this season came to an end Wednesday night with a 37-32 loss to Bremen at the 6-AAA Tournament at Sonoraville High School. Bremen (11-15) — the No. 4-seed from 6-AAA-South — advances to the region tournament semifinals to take on 6-AAA-North No. 1-seed Ringgold Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Adairsville fell behind early Wednesday night, trailing 10-2 after one quarter and 19-10 at halftime. The Tigers rallied in the third quarter, however, to tie the game at 26-all going to the final eight minutes. C. Crofton and Jason Houston led Bremen with 11 and six points, respectively. Adairsville got eight points each from Mason Boswell and Ethan Belcher. Hunter Hice scored six, Savaun Henderson four, Cody Henderson three, Jessie O’Kelley two, and Grason Dailey one point. Bremen was 0-for-3 from the free throw line in the first half, but converted 7-of-8 free throws in the final period to secure their win. Adairsville was 11-for-17 from the charity stripe. The Tigers’ season ends with a 14-13 record.
- Pro, college, and high school indoor track and field meet at LakePoint this weekend
LakePoint Sports, Dunamis Sports Group, and the National Athletics Foundation (NSAF) is hosting an open/professional, collegiate, high school and youth “Super Meet” February 8-11, 2018 at the LakePoint Sports Champions Center in Emerson. The Dunamis Super Meet will be the first full-fledged indoor meet in the state in more than 20 years, since prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The “Super Meet” plans include an open/professional and collegiate competition on Thursday-Friday, Feb. 8-9 followed by a high school and youth meet on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 10-11. Athletes from around the country will join Georgians competing in a full slate of indoor track and field events. Ticket prices are 30 percent cheaper if purchased online prior to the meet. - Woodland soccer teams sweep Darlington to open 2018 season; Cass falls to SE Whitfield
The 2018 high school soccer season got underway Tuesday with the Woodland teams sweeping Darlington in a pair of games at Wildcats' Stadium. Meanwhile, Cass dropped a doubleheader to visiting Southeast Whitfield. WOODLAND GIRLS 6, DARLINGTON 0 The Lady Cats opened the 2018 season with a 6-0 blanking of visiting Darlington. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored twice for Woodland. Jordan Evans, Emily Varga and Grace Webb all added goals in the first half. Webb also had two assists. A trio of Lady Cats’ keepers combined for the shutout. Esmeralda Hernandez, Sheena Buchanan, and Emile Berry each saw time in net. Woodland (1-0) hosts Cartersville Friday. WOODLAND BOYS 2, DARLINGTON 0 The Wildcats started the 2018 season with a 2-0 win over Darlington. Preston Godfrey and Kevin Moreno posted the Woodland goals. Woodland (1-0) entertains local-rival Cartersville Friday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 3, CASS 2 The visiting Lady Raiders scored in the 78th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and edge the Lady Colonels in their 2018 season opener. Southeast led 2-0 on goals in the 34th and 41st minutes before Cass rallied to tie the game in the second half. Brianna Ochoa scored for Cass in the 44th minute off an assist from Morgan DeLam to narrow the margin to 2-1. Emily Tracy then found Logan Vermaas in the 71st minute to score the equalizer. Southeast scored the go-ahead goal in the game’s 78th minute. Cass (0-1) travels to Northwest Whitfield Friday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD BOYS 4, CASS 2 Jonathan Tong gave the Colonels an early lead just four minutes into the game and Carlos Perez scored on a penalty kick late for Cass, but it was not enough in a 4-2 home loss Tuesday night to the Raiders. Southeast Whitfield tied the game in the 15th minute and scored back-to-back goals in the final minute of the first half to lead 3-1 at the break. The Raiders added a fourth goal midway through the second half. Cass keeper Isai Romero had 11 saves in the loss. The Colonels (0-1) travel to Northwest Whitfield Friday.
- Colonels secure state tourney berth, Tigers move one step closer
Cass senior Mark Chester converted a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining Tuesday night at Villa Rica as the Cass boys punched their ticket to the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 46-45 Region 7-AAAAA Tournament quarterfinal win over Carrollton. Chester — who finished with 16 points — was fouled going to the basket off a pass from Ashton Burley and knocked down the two free throws to edge the Trojans. Carrollton led most of the night, including 16-11 after one quarter and 25-19 at halftime. The Colonels, however, outscored the Trojans 27-20 in the second half to pull out the one-point win. Carrollton held a 38-36 lead after three quarters, but Cass won the all-important final eight minutes 10-7. Burley added 12 points for the Colonels, followed by Markeldrick Powell with seven, Carter Hedden six, Jordan Ford three, and Ethan Carter two points. Carrollton (15-11) was led by Marcellious Lockett with 18 points. Cass (17-9) advances to face the top-seeded Villa Rica Wildcats Thursday at Paulding County High School in the region semifinals. The region championship and third place games will also be at Paulding County on Friday. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 53, MURRAY COUNTY 44 The Tigers moved one step closer to securing a state tournament berth Tuesday night with a 53-44 win over Murray County in the first round of the Region 6-AAA Tournament at Sonoraville High School. Adairsville will play Bremen Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. back at Sonoraville with the winner securing a state playoff position and a spot in the Region 6-AAA semifinals. Bremen edged Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Tuesday night 56-55 to advance. Tuesday, the Tigers trailed 17-10 after one quarter, but carried a 26-25 lead to the intermission. Adairsville led 32-30 after three quarters and eased away late for a nine-point tournament win. Murray County (5-20) was led by Lincoln Puryear with 17 points. Haden Newport added 11 and Evan Varnell seven for the Indians. Hunter Hice and Cody Henderson led Adairsville with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Savaun Henderson scored seven. Mason Boswell finished with six points, Gaven Crunkelton five, and Grayson Dailey two points. KELL GIRLS 42, CASS 36 Ashley Sparrow scored a game-high 21 points for Kell as the Longhorns eliminated the Lady Colonels Tuesday night at Villa Rica in the quarterfinals of the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament, 42-36. It is the third time Kell has defeated Cass this season. It was a close game throughout, but Kell led at each quarter stop. Cass trailed 13-8 after one quarter, 25-16 at halftime, and 33-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Chanel Clemmons led Cass with 11 points in the loss. Lyric Curtis and Aaliyah Curtis followed with six points. Payton Stoddard scored five, Kyler Trouten three, Amber Brittian and Sharia Wade two, and Kyla Michienzi added one point. Kell (12-14) advances to play top-seeded Villa Rica Thursday in the semifinals at Paulding County High School and secures a berth in the state tournament. Cass finished the year 16-11. CARROLLTON GIRLS 59, WOODLAND 18 De’Mauri Flourney and Ansley Barge led the Lady Trojans with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as Carrollton eliminated visiting Woodland Tuesday night in the Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals 59-18. 7th-ranked Carrollton (21-5) took control early, leading 19-0 after one quarter and 29-7 at halftime. Whitney Harris led the Lady Cats with 11 points. Madgie Robinson followed with three. Carli Clymer and Ansley Evans added two points apiece. The Region 7-AAAAA Tournament moves to Paulding County High School for the semifinals Thursday where Carrollton will play Rome. The region finals and third place games will also be at Paulding County on Friday. Woodland’s season ends with a 7-17 mark.
- Adairsville and Cartersville girls, Woodland boys fall in tourney openers
All three local high school basketball teams that opened tournament play Monday night lost in their respective regions. The Adairsville girls, Cartersville girls, and Woodland boys were all eliminated Monday night and had their seasons come to an end. NORTH MURRAY GIRLS 65, ADAIRSVILLE 37 North Murray, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAA-North, outscored Adairsville 28-6 in the third quarter to pull away from the Lady Tigers and advance in the Region 6-AAA Tournament Monday night at Sonoraville. Adairsville, the No. 5 seed from Region 6-AAA-South, trailed 27-18 at halftime and had their season end with a 3-22 record. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 11 points. Havyn Isaac followed with 10. Josie Summerville added seven points and was selected to the all-region team. R. Stone led the Lady Mountaineers with 19 points. North Murray (17-7) will play Coahulla Creek Wednesday in the quarterfinals. CHAPEL HILL GIRLS 33, CARTERSVILLE 31 Winning for only the second time all year, the visiting Chapel Hill Lady Panthers edged Cartersville Monday night at the Storm Center, 33-31, to knock the Lady Canes out of the Region 5-AAAA tournament. Cartersville — won the two regular season matchups with Chapel Hill by eleven and nine points — led 10-2 after one quarter, but the Lady Panthers trailed by only two at halftime (19-17) and took a 27-23 lead after three quarters. Kalli Scheff led Cartersville (8-16) with nine points. Savannah Howard was the leading scorer for Chapel Hill with 12. Chapel Hill advances to play at 3rd-seeded Troup County Tuesday night. EAST PAULDING BOYS 82, WOODLAND 66 In the Region 7-AAAAA boys play-in game Monday night at Paulding County High School, the 8th-seeded Woodland boys were eliminated from the post-season in an 82-66 loss to 9th-seeded East Paulding. The Raiders led 18-15 after one quarter and 39-37 at halftime before outscoring the Wildcats 22-11 in the third quarter to take a 61-48 advantage into the final eight minutes. Azer Tidor led East Paulding (8-18) with 28 points. Sean Rutledge followed with 23. Silas Johnson scored 13 and B.J. Sutton added 11 for the Raiders. Jaylen Ballard scored 23 points to lead all Woodland scorers. Connor Gallagher scored 17 and Hunter Johnson added eight. East Paulding advances to play top-seeded Villa Rica Tuesday night at Villa Rica. The Wildcats’ season ends with a 7-19 mark. - Athletes Beyond Bartow: Mosby among league leaders in SWAC, Thrower scores career high
On the college hardwoods this past week, former Hurricane A.J. Mosby continued to perform as a statistical leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the Alcorn State Braves and former Excel Christian Academy standout Darius Thrower scored a new career high in a game for Truett McConnell. Meanwhile, the collegiate wrestling season moved closer to post-season and former Adairsville swimmer Katelynn Lawhorn contributed on multiple relay teams at the conference championships for Life University. There was also action on the college softball and baseball diamonds this past week. BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored nine points with eight rebounds, five assists, and one steal in an 86-82 home win last Wednesday over USC Aiken. Davis then scored four points with three rebounds and one assist in an 84-70 loss Saturday at Clayton State. FMU (13-7, 8-7 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Lander Wednesday before hosting North Georgia Saturday for the Patriots’ 2018 Homecoming Game. KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… played more than 20 minutes and scored six points in both of the Knights’ games last week. She had two rebounds and two assists in a 71-69 home win last Thursday over Mobile University and added three rebounds and three assists in an 82-65 home loss Saturday to Loyola (LA) University. MGSU (5-16, 2-10 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Brenau University Monday and Brewton-Parker Thursday. JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… started both games this past weekend as the Lady Vikings edged Rhodes College (59-58) and Hendrix College (75-74) in home conference games Friday and Sunday. Morning did not score in 18 minutes against Rhodes, but added three rebounds and two steals. She scored eight points with two rebounds, one assist, and three steals vs. Hendrix. Berry (10-11, 5-6 SSAC) plays at Centre College (KY) Friday and at Sewanee University Sunday. A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… played 32 minutes and scored 17 points with nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal Saturday in the Braves’ 60-57 loss at Jackson State. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist to turnover ratio (2.2), ranks third in the conference in assists (3.4 apg), and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (.498). He leads the Braves with 13.2 points per game, is shooting a team-high .882 from the free throw line, and leads the team in assists and steals. ASU (plays at Grambling State Monday and entertains Mississippi Valley State Saturday. Both contests are Southwestern Athletic Conference games. GREG MURPHY — Young Harris College (Jr., F, Woodland HS)… scored three points with two rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot last Wednesday in an 88-85 home loss to Clayton State.
