The Cass tennis teams were both 3-2 winners over Hiram Wednesday at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Colonels picked up victories at Line 1 singles and in both doubles matches while the boys won on singles lines 2 and 3 and secured the team victory with a win at Line 1 doubles. Emily Surcey won 6-1, 6-0 for the Lady Colonels, while the doubles pairings of McKenley King and Emma Wickenheiser and Alexis Pritchett and Grace Njorge earned solid wins by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 scores. The Colonels took two of three singles matches with Reagan Barrere earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory at Line 2 and Max McCauley survived a 6-2, 6-8, 6-1 battle to win at Line 3. The Cass Line 1 doubles pairing of brothers Kendall and Noah Arnold won 6-2, 6-3 for the Colonels third team point and the victory.

Haralson County pitcher Landon Malone tossed a five-hit shutout at visiting Adairsville Wednesday evening to lead the Rebels past the Tigers 6-0 in a Region 6-AAA game. Malone struck out seven and walked only two in seven innings. The host Rebels scored single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead. Haralson then doubled their advantage with a three-run sixth. Haralson managed only three hits in the game, but also took advantage of nine walks and four Adairsville errors. The Tigers had five hits including two by Caden Gibbs. Garrett Mishoe, Halen Huskins, and Noah Dutton had the other Adairsville base hits. Mishoe (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 6BB, 8K) went five innings and received the pitching loss. Levi Blackwell (0.1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K and Landon Ayers (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) pitched in the sixth. Haralson County improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in region action. Adairsville (9-5, 2-2) hosts Sonoraville Thursday.

Cass baseball broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning Wednesday evening at Villa Rica to defeat the Wildcats 8-2 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Cass led 3-1 through four innings before the fifth inning scoring eruption. Cass took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen to set up a two-run single by Evan Hinton that extended the Colonels’ lead to 5-1. Two wild pitches and another walk preceded an RBI single by Thomas Botts and the Cass lead was 8-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Blaine Ingram drove in a third inning run with a double to give Cass a 1-0 lead. Nathan Smith put Cass up 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth. Two walks and a single by Bryson Smith gave the Wildcats their first run in the fourth inning.They added a seventh inning run when Trevor Murphy doubled. Murphey and Johnny Bravy led the Villa Rica offense with two hits each. Noah Best (4.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Bravy and Murphy pitched in relief for Villa Rica. Evan Hinton (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 8K) earned the pitching win for the Colonels. Nic Walllin (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) closed out the final frame. Hinton and Smith (double, RBI) led Cass with two hits apiece. Smith (double, 2 RBI), Steven Spell and Ingram (double, RBI) contributed one hit each for the Colonels. Following the loss, Villa Rica is 8-10 overall and 1-4 in region play. Cass (8-8, 2-2) evened its overall and region marks with the road win. The Colonels host county rival Woodland Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m. EAST PAULDING 11, WOODLAND 1 East Paulding pitcher Jacob Cook tossed a complete game, scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts as the visiting Raiders defeated Woodland 11-1 in six innings Wednesday night. Cook blanked the Wildcats through the first four innings before allowing the lone Woodland run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dylan Webb. The Raiders’ senior was also a major contributor at the plate where he went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Andrew Pendleton had two hits and four RBI. Seth Grenon drove in a run with two hits. Jackson Phipps finished with two hits including a double while Brandon Haston doubled twice for East Paulding. Woodland pitcher Ben Ammons (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the loss on the mound. Seth McGill (2 IP, 4ER, 5H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for the Wildcats. Five different Wildcats had one hit each including Garrett Cornett, Koby Stansel, Chris Mills, Marco Haro, and Dylan Webb. East Paulding improved to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with the victory. Woodland (8-8, 1-1) plays region games at Cass Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and at East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Cartersville boys soccer team blanked Chapel Hill 5-0 in a Region 5-AAAA Tuesday at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. The Hurricanes led 1-0 at halftime on a header goal by Pedro Ghanem off a corner kick. Ghanem scored goals twice in the second half to complete his hat trick. Houston Read and Javi Morillon also added Canes’ goals. The final Cartersville tally was on an own goal. Cartersville (7-3, 4-0) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday evening. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CHAPEL HILL 3 The Lady Canes reeled off five straight goals Tuesday night in a come-from-behind 5-3 Region 5-AAAA win over Chapel Hill at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. Cartersville’s Courtney Rhea scored in the first half to cut Chapel Hill’s lead to 2-1 at the intermission. Marissa Mowry tied the game at 2-2 with an early second half goal abd Rhea gave Cartersville a 3-2 lead. The Lady Canes then took a 5-2 advantage on penaty kick goals by Kalyn Donegan and Mowry. Chapel Hill (6-5, 3-1) added a final goal, but the Hurricanes held on for the win. Cartersville (5-5, 3-1) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Alex Holdbrooks tossed eight strong innings and the Chargers’ offense produced double-digit runs as Georgia Highlands College defeated the visiting Gordon State Highlanders Tuesday night at LakePoint, 10-3. Holdbooks scattered four hits and two walks and was responsible for only one earned run. He fanned eight in earning the pitching victory. The Chargers scored seven runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. After Gordon State made the score 7-1 in the fifth, GHC added three more runs in th eighth for a 10-1 advantage. The visiting Highlanders scored twice in the ninth but Chargers’ pitcher Jeremiah Woods (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2K) retired the final three outs to complete the 10-3 win. Zach MIller hit a first inning solo homerun and added a double for his two hits. Parker Orr blasted a two-run homer in the third inning that gave the Chargers a 5-0 lead. Willis Kemp had three hits and one RBI. Bryson Horne drove in two runs with a pair of hits that included a double. Nick Piccapietra contributed two hits including a double and one RBI. Austin Foster (RBI) and Skylar McPhee had one hit each. Seven Gordon State batters had one hit each. Former Adairsville standout Sam Seaman had one of those hits in a ninth inning pinch hit role. GHC (21-8, 7-3) and Gordon State (17-13, 3-3) continue their four-game conference series Thursday and Saturday in Barnesville. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday.

Former Excel Christian Academy standout Elijah Robinson was part of a National Championship team at Emmanuel College. Emmanuel is transitioning to NCAA D-II status and was ineligible for post-season play in the NCAA. The 6-5 swingman helped the Lions capture the National Christian College Athletic Association national title where he notched a double-double in the championship game. He had a quiet night in the semifinals, putting up just nine points before bouncing back in the championship tilt. GOLF MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA, Heritage Golf Academy, HIlton Head, SC)… tied for 12th individually in the 3M Augusta Invitational hosted by Augusta University this past weekend. She shot 75 in each of her first two rounds before a fantastic four-under-68 to close strong. The Jaguars finished tied for second with Purdue — nine strokes back of champion Georgia. Augusta will play in the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State Mon.-Tue, March 26-27 at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw. LINDSEY BONNER — York University (Fr., Cartersville HS)… finished 18th as York won the Mary Washington Eagle Invitational over the weekend. Bonner shot 112-102 in the 36-hole event. HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… improved each round at the 3M Augusta Invitational. She shot 78, 76 and 73 over the three rounds to land in a tie for 36th. Mercer placed ninth in the 15-team event. Georgia Highlands softball split a pair of games Sunday at South Georgia, losing 8-3 in the opener but winning the second game 8-7 in Douglas. The Chargers led 2-0 early in Game 1, but succumbed to an eight-run fourth inning by South Georgia. In Game 2, the host Hawks took a 6-0 lead through three innings before Georgia Highlands scored six times in the fourth and added two more runs in the seventh for a come-from-behind one-run win. Shay Sullins (6.2 IP, 5ER, 10H, 1BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher for GHC in the second game. Micayla McCoy (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H) entered in the seventh to retire the final out. In the opening loss, the Chargers managed only three hits. Second baseman Hannah Willis and first baseman Alia Booth had one hit and one RBI each. In the Game 2 win, Kindell Reeves had two hits and two RBI. Booth had two hits and one RBI. Wills drove in two runs with a double and three walks and Lexi Palazzo finished with a hit and two RBI. Mya Adams added a triple. Georgia Highlands (19-12, 7-3) currently sits in second place in the GCAA one game behind Georgia Military. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (5th yr. pro; Georgia Southern Univ.; Cartersville HS)…faced 11 batters and tossed three scoreless innings in the Rockies 13-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, March 11. Howard entered in the fifth inning with the Rockies trailing 13-4. He allowed a couple of hits with no walks and struck out four. The southpaw also picked up his second hold in Cactus League action by recording two outs in the eighth inning without allowing a run in a 10-8 loss last Thursday to the L.A. Angels. Howard is 1-0 in five relief appearances this Spring with two holds, a 1.86 ERA, three walks, 10 strikeouts, and 9.2 innings of work. Opponents have a .171 batting average against him and his WHIP is down to 0.93. The Rockies are 9-14 in Cactus League play through Sunday’s games. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels (3rd year pro; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… Justus entered as a pinch runner in the sixth inning, remained in the game at shortstop, and had a hit in his plate appearance but the Angels lost last Thursday to the Chicago White Sox 7-2. Justus is now 2-for-8 for a .250 batting average with the major league club in Cactus League games. The Angels are 10-15 this Spring through Sunday’s games. The sixth inning hit put the Mountain Lions ahead 4-3 at the time, but Francis Marion came-from-behind to win 7-6 in 10 innings. The loss left YHC 2-2 for the week with a non-conference home win over Lenoir-Rhyne and a win in one of three Peach Belt Conference games at Francis Marion. SEAN McDERMOTT — Mercer University (Jr., 1B/DH, Adairsville HS)… sharing some time at first base, McDermott had one hit in six at-bats across three game appearances this past week. The hit came last Wednesday in an 11-8 home win over Georgia Southern. He also saw action in two of the Bears’ three weekend wins over Eastern Kentucky. Mercer (16-5) plays at Georgia Tech Wednesday night before opening Southern Conference play with a home weekend series with Wofford. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… started Friday’s 9-2 loss and Game 1 of a doubleheader. He also appeared in Saturday’s game with West Georgia as the Hawks lost two-of-three in the Gulf South Conference series. Reaid was 1-for-4 at the plate and scored one run in the series. His season batting average is now .318 in six starts and 22 at-bats. Defensively, the catcher has not made an error in 51 total chances. Shorter (10-15, 3-9) entertains Emmanuel College Tuesday afternoon and will travel to Cleveland, MS for a three game series at No. 1-ranked Delta State University Saturday and Sunday. SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf./DH, Adairsville HS)… went 2-for-8 with a walk and scored two runs in a pair of starts as designated hitter for the Highlanders last Tuesday and Thursday. He also stole a base. Gordon lost both games, but evened the series with ABAC with wins in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday and on Saturday. GSCC (17-12, 3-2) has a four-game conference series with Georgia Highlands this week. Tuesday’s game is at LakePoint in Emerson. Thursday’s game and Saturday’s doubleheader will be in Barnesville. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… hit safely in three of four games this past week and was 3-for-10 at the plate with a double, a sacrifice, three walks, and a run scored. The Mountain Lions defeated Lenoir-Rhyne last Wednesday and won one of three conference games over the weekend at Francis Marion. Washington’s batting average is currently .246 in 20 starts and 57 at-bats. Young Harris (12-13, 7-8 Peach Belt Conference) makes the short trip to Truett-McConnell University Wednesday for a non-conference game and hosts 6th-ranked Flagler College Friday through Sunday in a three-game PBC series.

The track and field teams of Cass and Cartersville High School had members compete in Saturday’s 2018 Mohawk-Warrior Invitational at Gordon Central High School. Dalton won both the girls and boys titles with Riverdale and Rockmart placing second and third in both genders. The Calhoun girls placed fourth. Host Gordon Central was fourth in the boys’ meet. The Cass girls were ninth in the 11-team field. The Cass boys placed seventh. Cartersville fielded a partial team. Also Saturday at the Roswell Relays at Roswell High School, the Woodland girls placed sixth and the Woodland boys were seventh. Cambridge won the 18-team girls meet, followed by Archer, Cherokee, Douglas County, and Centennial. Archer won the boys title at Roswell followed by Cherokee, Hiram, Roswell, and Cambridge.
