The 2018 high school soccer season got underway Tuesday with the Woodland teams sweeping Darlington in a pair of games at Wildcats' Stadium. Meanwhile, Cass dropped a doubleheader to visiting Southeast Whitfield. WOODLAND GIRLS 6, DARLINGTON 0 The Lady Cats opened the 2018 season with a 6-0 blanking of visiting Darlington. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored twice for Woodland. Jordan Evans, Emily Varga and Grace Webb all added goals in the first half. Webb also had two assists. A trio of Lady Cats’ keepers combined for the shutout. Esmeralda Hernandez, Sheena Buchanan, and Emile Berry each saw time in net. Woodland (1-0) hosts Cartersville Friday. WOODLAND BOYS 2, DARLINGTON 0 The Wildcats started the 2018 season with a 2-0 win over Darlington. Preston Godfrey and Kevin Moreno posted the Woodland goals. Woodland (1-0) entertains local-rival Cartersville Friday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 3, CASS 2 The visiting Lady Raiders scored in the 78th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and edge the Lady Colonels in their 2018 season opener. Southeast led 2-0 on goals in the 34th and 41st minutes before Cass rallied to tie the game in the second half. Brianna Ochoa scored for Cass in the 44th minute off an assist from Morgan DeLam to narrow the margin to 2-1. Emily Tracy then found Logan Vermaas in the 71st minute to score the equalizer. Southeast scored the go-ahead goal in the game’s 78th minute. Cass (0-1) travels to Northwest Whitfield Friday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD BOYS 4, CASS 2 Jonathan Tong gave the Colonels an early lead just four minutes into the game and Carlos Perez scored on a penalty kick late for Cass, but it was not enough in a 4-2 home loss Tuesday night to the Raiders. Southeast Whitfield tied the game in the 15th minute and scored back-to-back goals in the final minute of the first half to lead 3-1 at the break. The Raiders added a fourth goal midway through the second half. Cass keeper Isai Romero had 11 saves in the loss. The Colonels (0-1) travel to Northwest Whitfield Friday.

Cass senior Mark Chester converted a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining Tuesday night at Villa Rica as the Cass boys punched their ticket to the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 46-45 Region 7-AAAAA Tournament quarterfinal win over Carrollton. Chester — who finished with 16 points — was fouled going to the basket off a pass from Ashton Burley and knocked down the two free throws to edge the Trojans. Carrollton led most of the night, including 16-11 after one quarter and 25-19 at halftime. The Colonels, however, outscored the Trojans 27-20 in the second half to pull out the one-point win. Carrollton held a 38-36 lead after three quarters, but Cass won the all-important final eight minutes 10-7. Burley added 12 points for the Colonels, followed by Markeldrick Powell with seven, Carter Hedden six, Jordan Ford three, and Ethan Carter two points. Carrollton (15-11) was led by Marcellious Lockett with 18 points. Cass (17-9) advances to face the top-seeded Villa Rica Wildcats Thursday at Paulding County High School in the region semifinals. The region championship and third place games will also be at Paulding County on Friday. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 53, MURRAY COUNTY 44 The Tigers moved one step closer to securing a state tournament berth Tuesday night with a 53-44 win over Murray County in the first round of the Region 6-AAA Tournament at Sonoraville High School. Adairsville will play Bremen Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. back at Sonoraville with the winner securing a state playoff position and a spot in the Region 6-AAA semifinals. Bremen edged Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Tuesday night 56-55 to advance. Tuesday, the Tigers trailed 17-10 after one quarter, but carried a 26-25 lead to the intermission. Adairsville led 32-30 after three quarters and eased away late for a nine-point tournament win. Murray County (5-20) was led by Lincoln Puryear with 17 points. Haden Newport added 11 and Evan Varnell seven for the Indians. Hunter Hice and Cody Henderson led Adairsville with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Savaun Henderson scored seven. Mason Boswell finished with six points, Gaven Crunkelton five, and Grayson Dailey two points. KELL GIRLS 42, CASS 36 Ashley Sparrow scored a game-high 21 points for Kell as the Longhorns eliminated the Lady Colonels Tuesday night at Villa Rica in the quarterfinals of the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament, 42-36. It is the third time Kell has defeated Cass this season. It was a close game throughout, but Kell led at each quarter stop. Cass trailed 13-8 after one quarter, 25-16 at halftime, and 33-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Chanel Clemmons led Cass with 11 points in the loss. Lyric Curtis and Aaliyah Curtis followed with six points. Payton Stoddard scored five, Kyler Trouten three, Amber Brittian and Sharia Wade two, and Kyla Michienzi added one point. Kell (12-14) advances to play top-seeded Villa Rica Thursday in the semifinals at Paulding County High School and secures a berth in the state tournament. Cass finished the year 16-11. CARROLLTON GIRLS 59, WOODLAND 18 De’Mauri Flourney and Ansley Barge led the Lady Trojans with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as Carrollton eliminated visiting Woodland Tuesday night in the Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals 59-18. 7th-ranked Carrollton (21-5) took control early, leading 19-0 after one quarter and 29-7 at halftime. Whitney Harris led the Lady Cats with 11 points. Madgie Robinson followed with three. Carli Clymer and Ansley Evans added two points apiece. The Region 7-AAAAA Tournament moves to Paulding County High School for the semifinals Thursday where Carrollton will play Rome. The region finals and third place games will also be at Paulding County on Friday. Woodland’s season ends with a 7-17 mark.

All three local high school basketball teams that opened tournament play Monday night lost in their respective regions. The Adairsville girls, Cartersville girls, and Woodland boys were all eliminated Monday night and had their seasons come to an end. NORTH MURRAY GIRLS 65, ADAIRSVILLE 37 North Murray, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAA-North, outscored Adairsville 28-6 in the third quarter to pull away from the Lady Tigers and advance in the Region 6-AAA Tournament Monday night at Sonoraville. Adairsville, the No. 5 seed from Region 6-AAA-South, trailed 27-18 at halftime and had their season end with a 3-22 record. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 11 points. Havyn Isaac followed with 10. Josie Summerville added seven points and was selected to the all-region team. R. Stone led the Lady Mountaineers with 19 points. North Murray (17-7) will play Coahulla Creek Wednesday in the quarterfinals. CHAPEL HILL GIRLS 33, CARTERSVILLE 31 Winning for only the second time all year, the visiting Chapel Hill Lady Panthers edged Cartersville Monday night at the Storm Center, 33-31, to knock the Lady Canes out of the Region 5-AAAA tournament. Cartersville — won the two regular season matchups with Chapel Hill by eleven and nine points — led 10-2 after one quarter, but the Lady Panthers trailed by only two at halftime (19-17) and took a 27-23 lead after three quarters. Kalli Scheff led Cartersville (8-16) with nine points. Savannah Howard was the leading scorer for Chapel Hill with 12. Chapel Hill advances to play at 3rd-seeded Troup County Tuesday night. EAST PAULDING BOYS 82, WOODLAND 66 In the Region 7-AAAAA boys play-in game Monday night at Paulding County High School, the 8th-seeded Woodland boys were eliminated from the post-season in an 82-66 loss to 9th-seeded East Paulding. The Raiders led 18-15 after one quarter and 39-37 at halftime before outscoring the Wildcats 22-11 in the third quarter to take a 61-48 advantage into the final eight minutes. Azer Tidor led East Paulding (8-18) with 28 points. Sean Rutledge followed with 23. Silas Johnson scored 13 and B.J. Sutton added 11 for the Raiders. Jaylen Ballard scored 23 points to lead all Woodland scorers. Connor Gallagher scored 17 and Hunter Johnson added eight. East Paulding advances to play top-seeded Villa Rica Tuesday night at Villa Rica. The Wildcats’ season ends with a 7-19 mark. On the college hardwoods this past week, former Hurricane A.J. Mosby continued to perform as a statistical leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the Alcorn State Braves and former Excel Christian Academy standout Darius Thrower scored a new career high in a game for Truett McConnell. Meanwhile, the collegiate wrestling season moved closer to post-season and former Adairsville swimmer Katelynn Lawhorn contributed on multiple relay teams at the conference championships for Life University. There was also action on the college softball and baseball diamonds this past week. BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored nine points with eight rebounds, five assists, and one steal in an 86-82 home win last Wednesday over USC Aiken. Davis then scored four points with three rebounds and one assist in an 84-70 loss Saturday at Clayton State. Morning did not score in 18 minutes against Rhodes, but added three rebounds and two steals. She scored eight points with two rebounds, one assist, and three steals vs. Hendrix. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist to turnover ratio (2.2), ranks third in the conference in assists (3.4 apg), and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (.498). He leads the Braves with 13.2 points per game, is shooting a team-high .882 from the free throw line, and leads the team in assists and steals. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville resident, Laurel Springs Acad.)… paired up with teammate Lilya Hadab for a 6-3 doubles win at Line 3, but lost her Line 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1 to Karoline Haller as the Cardinals lost 4-3 at Wright State Sunday afternoon. Ball State (3-2) hosts Valparaiso University this Saturday. SWIMMING KATELYNN LAWHORN — Life University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… competing at the 2018 Mid-South Conference Championships over the weekend, Lawhorn teamed with Carla Colon, Kirsten Coetzee, and Claire Ryland to finish fifth in the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.33. The same relay team placed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.89), was seventh in the 400 medley relay (4:24.98), and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.04). The Running Eagles compete next at the NAIA National Championships February 28-March 3 in Columbus, GA.

Junior swimmer Rylee Moss of Adairsville and freshman Giulia Vidoli of Cartersville highlighted local results from the 2018 GHSA State Swimming Championships Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Both competing in the Class A - AAAAA Championship division, Moss was seventh (58.65, 3rd in Class A-AAA) in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the individual medley finals (2:09.69, 2nd in Class A-AAA). Vidoli and 7th in Class AAAA-AAAAA in the 100 backstroke (1:00.13) and was 13th overall in the 100 freestyle (55.53). Vidoli was part of the Class 4A-5A, 17th-place Cartersville 400 free relay team with teammates Grayson Breedlove, Rachel Long, and Gracie Siniard. The Lady Canes’ 200 free relay team of Siniard, Vidoli, Long, and Aleina Vidoli placed 32nd in 1:50.37 during prelims. Breedlove, Siniard, Aleina Vidoli and Long placed 37th in the 200 medley relay (2:08.00). CASS BOYS 52, KELL 50 The Cass boys closed out the regular season Saturday at home with a 52-50 win over Kell (13-12, 10-6). Mark Chester led the Colonels with 20 points. Markeldrick Powell and Ashton Burley followed with 11 and 8 points, respectively. Cass (16-9, 9-7) squares off with Carrollton in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Villa Rica. KELL GIRLS 45, CASS 42 The Lady Colonels dropped a 45-42 decision to visiting Kell Saturday in both teams regular season finale. With the win, Kell (11-14, 8-8) will be the No. 4 seed next week in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Cass (15-10, 8-8) will be the No. 5 seed. The two teams will rematch in the tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Villa Rica.

The Cartersville girls and the Woodland boys won non-region varsity basketball games Saturday at Woodland as the two schools split contests. The Lady Canes won the opener 47-34. The Wildcats took the nightcap in overtime, 59-56. Both teams head into their respective region tournaments next week. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 47, WOODLAND 34 Cio Seigler scored 15 points and Amya Davis added eight as Cartersville pulled away in the second half for a 13-point victory. Kallie Scheff scored six for the Lady Canes. Addie Smith totaled five, London Shaw four, and Jaijah Evans, Aliyah Sellers, and Ariana Cochran added three points each. Cartersville led 6-3 after one period, but Woodland carried a 17-15 advantage into halftime. Cartersville went ahead 32-27 after three quarters. Whitney Harris led Woodland with 10 points. Carli Clymer had nine, Madgie Robinson eight, Gracie Styles three, and Callie Jones one point. Cartersville finished the regular season with an 8-15 mark. Woodland finished 7-16. Cartersville will open the Region 5-AAAA tournament Monday at 6 p.m. against Chapel Hill at the Storm Center. The 7th-seeded Lady Cats will play at No. 2-seed Carrollton Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals. WOODLAND BOYS 59, CARTERSVILLE 56 The Cartersville boys trailed most of regulation Saturday at Woodland, but rallied to take a three point lead, 48-45, with only seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Ballard of the Wildcats nailed a buzzer-beater three-pointer, however, to send the game to overtime tied 48-48. Woodland held leads of 10-6 after one quarter, 23-20 at halftime, and 37-30 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats then edged the Canes 11-8 in the extra period for a 59-56 win. Jaylon Pugh led three Cartersville players in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Isaac Gridley scored 16 and T.J. Horton 12 for the Hurricanes. Luke Schiltz scored six and Perignon Dyer added four points. Charles Norman led Woodland with 17 points. Ballard had 14 points and Hunter Johnson 11 for the Wildcats. Peyton Roberts scored seven points for Woodland. Connor Gallagher scored five, Justice Carter three, and Dawson Wilkins two. Woodland made 14 of 22 free throws in the game, Cartersville was 12 of 21 from the charity stripe. Woodland wrapped up the regular season and will head into the Region 7-AAAAA tournament next week with a 7-18 record. The Wildcats will play East Paulding in a tournament play-in game Monday at Paulding County High School. Cartersville ended the regular season 18-5 and will open Region 5-AAAA tournament play Friday at 6 p.m. in the semifinals as the No. 2 seed. The Canes will play the survivor of #3 LaGrange/#6 Chapel Hill/#7 Central-Carroll.

The Cartersville boys took care of visiting Troup County Friday night at the Storm Center with a 73-55 Region 5-AAAA victory and secured a tie for the top spot in the region heading into next week’s post-season tournament. The Canes led 47-46 after three quarters, but commanded the final eight minutes to with their tenth region game. Sandy Creek defeated Central-Carroll Friday night to also finish the region slate with ten wins. Troup closes out the region schedule Saturday against Chapel Hill. If Chapel Hill wins that game Cartersville wins a tie-breaker to secure the top seed. If Troup wins, the Hurricanes tie for the top spot with Sandy Creek. In the event of a tie, a coin toss will take place to determine the top seed. The top seed hosts the region tournament semifinals next Friday. In the Canes’ win Friday night, T.J. Horton poured in 28 points, Jaylon Pugh scored 18, and Isaac Gridley added 11 with multiple blocks. Jay Jefferson led Troup County with 24 points. Troup (11-10, 6-5) led 14-12 after one quarter. Cartersville led 34-30 at halftime. Cartersville (18-4, 10-2) awaits their region tournament fate and will travel across town to play Woodland Saturday afternoon in a non-region contest. TROUP COUNTY GIRLS 51, CARTERSVILLE 29 Troup (11-8, 6-4) had three players to finish in double-figure scoring Friday night at the Storm Center on their way to a 51-29 win over the Lady Canes. Cio Siegler led Cartersville with 14 points. Cartersville (7-15, 2-10) travels to Woodland Saturday at 3 p.m. for a non-region game to close out the regular season. The Lady Canes will open the Region 5-AAAA tournament next week in a tournament play-in game. COAHULLA CREEK GIRLS 61, ADAIRSVILLE 53 Lily Snyder scored 14 points and Mallory Poe added 12 as Coahulla Creek defeated the Lady Tigers Friday night in a closely contested Region 6-AAA battle. In the back-and-forth game, the Lady Colts led 17-14 after one quarter and 45-44 after three quarters. Adairsville led 30-26 at halftime. Josie Summerville led Adairsville with 20 points and 13 rebounds. It was her eighth double-double of the season. Nakiyah Washington followed with 14 points and Havyn Isaac added 12. Coahulla Creek finished the regular season with an 11-12 mark. Adairsville concludes the regular season 3-12 and will open the Region 6-AAA tournament Monday at 4 p.m. at Sonoraville against the No. 2 seed from the North sub-region. COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 45, ADAIRSVILLE 43 The visiting Colts led 15-7 after one period, 23-15 at halftime, and 35-27 entering the fourth quarter as they held off Adairsville Friday night, 45-43. Coahulla Creek (8-15) was led by 13 points from Gage Seibenhener and 12 from Marc Pilcher. Cody Henderson led the Tigers with 17 points. Hunter Hice and Mason Boswell each added nine. Adairsville enters next week’s Region 6-AAA tournament with a 13-12 mark. The Tigers will be the No. 2 seed from the South sub-region and will face the No. 5 seed from the North sub-region Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sonoraville. HIRAM GIRLS 45, WOODLAND 27 The host Lady Hornets led 10-6 after one quarter and 18-12 at halftime before separating in the second half for an 18-point Region 7-AAAAA win over Woodland. Hiram outscored Woodland 18-7 in the third stanza. A.J. Judie led Hiram (10-15, 7-8) with 16 ponts. Whitney Harris led Woodland with eight points. Madgie Robinson scored five. Morgan Cooper and Morgan Bailey added four each. Woodland (7-15, 4-12) closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon at home in a non-region game against Cartersville.
