Meanwhile the Adairsville boys won their second straight at home with a Region 6-AAA victory over Murray County. WOODLAND GIRLS 34, CARTERSVILLE 32 Whitney Harris led Woodland with 13 points, including a fourth quarter go-ahead three pointer Monday night as the Lady Cats edged Cartersville 34-32 in the opening round of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival at Berry College. Madgie Robinson scored 11 points for Woodland, followed by Carli Clymer with six and Ansley Evans three points. Cartersville led 11-10 after one quarter and 13-12 at halftime. Woodland held a 25-19 lead after three quarters. Amaya Davis led Cartersville with seven points. Kalli Scheff scored six. De’Asia Jefferson contributed five points. London Shaw and Addie Smith posted four points each. Jada Cunningham, Ariana Cochran, and Cio Siegler added two points apiece. Woodland (2-4) advances to play Model Tuesday at Georgia Highlands College in Rome at 6 p.m. The Lady Canes (3-4) will play Coosa in a consolation game Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 79, PEPPERELL 36 The Hurricanes exploded for 35 points in the second quarter Monday night and limited Pepperell to only four points in the third quarter on their way to a 79-36 win at Berry College in the opening round of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival. The Canes led 51-21 at halftime and 67-25 through three quarters. T.J. Horton led four Canes in double figures with 19. Perignon Dyer scored 14 points. Jaylon Pugh and Grant Harris added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Luke Schiltz scored five. JKobe Orr added four points. Marqual Coaxum, Jacorey Johns, and Taywuan Johnson each scored two. Branson Hanks and Dawson Melton scored 10 points each for Pepperell (2-3). Cartersville (3-0) plays Calhoun Wednesday in the second round at 6 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 63, MURRAY COUNTY 42 The Tigers took a 16-11 lead after one quarter and built on their advantage throughout the night in a 63-42 Region 6-AAA victory over Murray County Monday at home. Adairsville led by seven at halftime and led by 10 after three quarters on their way to the 19-point decision. Adairsville’s Cody Henderson had a game-high 20 points, followed by Gaven Crunkelton with 13 points and Hunter Hice with 11. Ethan Belcher tossed in nine points. Grayson Dailey finished with six points. Mason Boswell and Jessie O’Kelley added two points each. Bronson Bowen and Haden Newport led the Indians with 11 points apiece. Murray County slipped to 2-8 overall and 1-4 and region play. Adairsville improved to 3-7 with their second straight win. The Tigers are 2-3 in Region 6-AAA and host Cass Tuesday night at 8 p.m. MURRAY COUNTY GIRLS 43, ADAIRSVILLE 31 The Adairsville girls led 11-3 after one quarter and 18-11 at halftime Monday night, but the visiting Lady Indians rallied in the third period to take a 28-25 lead. Murray County then pulled away in the final quarter for a 12-point Region 6-AAA win. Jaide Johns scored 13 and Katie Ashie 11 to lead Murray County. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 12 points. Josie Summerville and Havyn Isaac followed with six each. Murray County improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in region games. Adairsville (2-8, 1-3) hosts Cass Tuesday night at 7 p.m. SONORAVILLE BOYS 55, WOODLAND 52 The Woodland boys basketball team chipped away at an early 12-point lead by Sonoraville Monday night at the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival in Rome, but fell to the Phoenix 55-52. Sonoraville led 18-6 after one quarter, 27-22 at halftime, and 40-37 through three quarters. Will Walraven had a game-high 26 points to lead Sonoraville. Chris Rush scored nine and Lucas Crooks eight for the Phoenix. Woodland was led by Justice Carter with 12 points. Dawson Wilkins and Hunter Johnson scored 10 point each. Charles Norman contributed eight points. DJ Robinson and Jaylen Ballard scored four. RJ Beaubrun added two points. Sonoraville remained undefeated on the year and improved to 8-0. The Phoenix will play Darlington Wednesday night in the second round. Woodland (1-7) plays Coosa in the tournament consolation bracket Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. Coosa lost to Rome Monday night, 57-54.

The victory was Georgia State’s first-ever bowl win. Applin finished the year with 46 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, one forced fumble, and one interception. The Adairsville swim team hosted and placed third Saturday at the Whoville Invitational at the Adairsville pool. Cherokee High School won the meet with Northwest Whitfield finishing second. South Paulding, Coahulla Creek, and Signal Mountain (TN) were also part of the competition. The Adairsville boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of Johnathon Wilkes, Jason Bromby, Chance Jones, and Daniel Sullivan finished second to Cherokee in their event, but just missed qualifying for the state meet by a fraction of a second with a 3:44.92. Cartersville wrestling collected three weight class titles and a team runner-up finish at the Union County Invitational Saturday in Blairsville. Forest Park won the team title with 179 points. Cartersville was second with 168 points. Johnathan De La Cruz (182-pounds), Desmond Winters (195-pounds) and Dre Pennymon (Heavyweight) won individual crowns for the Canes. Cartersville wrestlers Garrett Geros (170-pounds), Jabril Williams (160-pounds), Earl Harris (145-pounds), Jaylon Thomas (138-pounds), Eion Neal (126-pounds), and Caz Smith (120-pounds) were weight class runner-ups. Johnathan Sanders placed third at 220-pounds. Rashar Locklear was third at 160-pounds. A.J. Scott was third at 126-pounds, and Conner Adams placed third at 120-pounds. Trey Frazier finished in fourth place in the 160-pound division.

Woodland finished runner-up and Cass placed eighth at the 30-team McCallie Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Chattanooga. The prestigous event annually draws some of the top competition from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas. Host McCallie won the tournament title with 209.5 points. Woodland was next with 193.5 and North Hall (GA) finished third with 166 points. Cass totaled 125.5. Woodland’s Caden McCrary (113-pounds), Kyle Gollhofer (120-pounds), and Cody Cochran (160-pounds) won their respective weight classes. Cass’ Tripp Breeden (220-pounds) and Seven Richards (Heavyweight) were both runner-up in their weight divisions. Richards, who was ranked 20th nationally this past week in the Heavyweight division, lost 1-0 in the finals to nationally 18th-ranked River Henry of McCallie in the finals. Other top finishes for locals included a fourth place for Woodland’s Gavin Nix (126-pounds), fourth place by Tyler Pilcher of Cass (132-pounds), and sixth place by the Colonels’ Ben Mills (126-pounds). Cass and Woodland will compete in the 49-team Buford High School Takedown Invitational December 22-23.

The Cass Lady Colonels, playing their fourth game in four days Saturday evening, came up short in a 74-47 loss to Villa Rica in the championship game of the Central-Carroll Christmas Tournament. Villa Rica improved to 7-0 on the season and handed the Lady Colonels their second loss of the year — both to the Wildcats. Villa Rica won at Cass on December 2 70-62 in a Region 7-AAAAA game. “We ran out of gas at the end of a long week,” said Lady Colonels coach Burt Jackson. “I’m still very proud of this team and the way we’ve played.” Villa Rica, ranked 8th in Class AAAAA, led 24-10 after one quarter and 45-20 at halftime. Aliyah Hindsman had a game-high 18 points for the Lady Wildcats. Jaila Orozco and Emmy Parham added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Payton Stoddard scored 15 points for Cass and was named to the All-Tournament team. Kyla Michienzi followed with seven points. Lyric Curtis totaled six. Aaliyah Curtis, Chanel Clemmons, and Ariana Hames posted four point each. Alexis Ware and Sharia Wade contributed three points each. Londaisha Smith added one point. Cartersville split a pair of non-region games Saturday afternoon at Calhoun while the Cass boys won a nip-and-tuck battle with Lithia Springs at the LakePoint Showcase in Emerson. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 54, CALHOUN 27 The Hurricanes got double digit scoring from Perignon Dyer (16), Jaylon Pugh (15), and Isaac Gridley (10) and improved to 2-0 with a 54-27 win at Calhoun Saturday afternoon. Cartersville led 15-6 after on period, 30-13 at the intermission, and 47-19 through three quarters on their way to the 27-point decision. Davis Allen scored eight points and Tononcito Martha added seven for the Yellow Jackets as they fell to 1-2 on the season. Rounding out the Cartersville scoring were T.J. Horton with eight points. Luke Schiltz and Grant Harris posted two points apiece. Marqual Coaxum scored one. CALHOUN GIRLS 41, CARTERSVILLE 36 A Lady Canes rally in the final eight minutes was not quite enough Saturday as Cartersville lost at Calhoun 41-36. Cartersville fell behind early and trailed 31-22 after three quarters. The Lady Canes narrowed the deficit to only two points in the final period, but Calhoun held on for a five-point win. Erin Davis and Railey Greeson led Calhoun (2-2) in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. “We came out a little flat,” said Cartersville coach Cindy Moore. “We made a nice effort in the fourth quarter to cut their lead to two at one point, but didn’t quite get over the hump.” Cio Siegler led Cartersville scorers with nine points. She was followed by De’Asia Jefferson with eight, Kalli Scheff with six, Amaya Davis and Addie Smith with four each, London Shaw scored three, and Ariana Cochran two points for the Lady Canes. CASS BOYS 52, LITHIA SPRINGS 48 The Cass boys won a back-and-forth affair with Lithia Springs Saturday afternoon at the LakePoint Champions Center by outscoring the Lions 18-13 in the fourth quarter. The game was the opener of a four-game boys set featured at the 2nd annual LakePoint Showcase in Emerson. In a game where the lead swapped hands several times throughout, the Colonels led 12-10 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime. Lithia Springs took a 35-34 lead into the final eight minutes. Chase Ellison led Lithiai Springs with 12 points. Keyshawn Phillips added nine for the Lions who slipped to 7-3 on the year. Mark Chester had a game-high 22 points for the Colonels. Ashton Burley scored 19 points and Justice Hayes added eight. Ethan Carter chipped in with two points. Hayes also grabbed several key rebounds for Cass down the stretch. The LakePoint Champions Center in Emerson is hosting its second annual LakePoint Basketball Showcase Saturday, December 16 featuring four high school boys games starting at 3:00 p.m. The one-day event is being hosted at the state-of-the-art LakePoint Champions Center and will feature one school from both Bartow County and Douglas County, two schools from Paulding County, three schools from Cobb County, and one school from Tennessee. This matchup should be intense as the rivalry continues. 6:00 PM North Cobb Christian Eagles (6-1) vs. Paulding County Patriots (3-4) After an impressive 26-4 record and Elite Eight appearance, Head Coach Greg Matta is eager to get his NCCS team back in the mix for a state title run in Class A. Paulding County is led by Coach Kevin Hammitt and is also motivated to build on last season’s success. The Patriots posted an 11-18 record, but had some late-season momentum before falling in their region championship game. The 8th-ranked Cartersville boys basketball team opened its 2017-18 season Friday night at the Storm Center with a solid 76-54 win over Paulding County. The Canes led at each quarter break and were up 25-19 after one quarter, 43-27 at the intermission, and 65-40 through three periods. Jeremiah Reed led the visiting Patriots with nine points. Vance Pinderson added seven points for Paulding County (3-4). Jaylon Pugh had a game-high 27 points for Cartersville, followed by T.J. Horton with 17 and Luke Schiltz with 15 points. JKobe Orr also reached double digits with 10 points. Perignon Dyer added four points. Marko Dudley added two points and Marqual Coaxum scored one point. Cartersville's Isaac Gridley had nine blocked shots. The Canes (1-0) travel to Calhoun Saturday at 4 p.m. and will open play in the Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament Monday against Pepperell at 5:30 p.m. at Berry College. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 60, BREMEN 57 (Overtime) Hunter Hice scored 19 points and Ethan Belcher scored 16 points as the Adairsville Tigers edged visiting Bremen Friday night 60-57 in overtime. The Tigers trailed 23-20 after one quarter and 28-27 at halftime before taking a slim 38-37 lead through three periods. The two teams were tied 51-51 at the end of regulation. Charlie Crafton and Jason Houston led the Blue Devils with 20 and 11 points, respectively. Bremen falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Region 6-AAA play. Grayson Dailey finished with six points for Adairsville. Jessie O’Kelley, Cody Henderson, and Mason Boswell each scored five points. Savaun Henderson and Gaven Crunkelton added two points each. Adairsville (2-7, 1-3) hosts Murray County Monday night at 7:30 p.m. and Cass Tuesday night at 8 p.m. HIRAM BOYS 41, WOODLAND 29 The visiting Hiram Hornets topped Woodland 41-29 Friday night in a Region 7-AAAAA game. The Hornets improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in region play with their fourth straight win. Jaylen Ballard led Woodland with 12 points. Charles Norman added nine. "We committed too many turnovers," said Wildcats head coach Colman Roberts. "We also shot only 1-for-9 from the three-point arc." Woodland (1-6, 0-3) opens play in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Tournament Monday night at Georgia Highlands College. The Wildcats play Sonoraville at 7:30 p.m. on the Floyd County campus.

The Cass girls defeated the host Lady Lions 53-42 Friday night in the semi- finals of the Central-Carroll Christmas Tournament in Carrollton. Cass trailed 14-12 after one quarter and 27-25 at halftime, but surged to a 36-31 lead by the end of the third quarter. Payton Stoddard led Cass with 19 points. Kyla Michienzi also reached double digits with 10 points. Lyric Curtis scored six. Aaliyah Curtis and Chanel Clemmons posted five points each. Alexis Ware scored four points. Sharia Wade and Kyler Trouten added two points apiece for the Lady Colonels. Haley Mehring led Central with ten points. Central fell to 5-2 on the season and will play in the third place consolation game Saturday afternoon. Cass (6-1) will face Class 5A, 8th-ranked and undefeated Villa Rica Saturday night at 6:30 for the tournament championship at Central-Carroll High School. The game will be a rematch of the two teams’ December 2 contest won by the Lady Wildcats (8-0) 70-62 at Cass. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 58, BREMEN 52 The Adairsville Lady Tigers picked up their first Region 6-AAA win of the year Friday night at home with a 58-52 defeat of Bremen. Adairsville took a 16-4 lead in the first quarter, led 27-20 at halftime, and held a 40-37 edge through three quarters on their way to the six-point victory. Colby Redding led Bremen (2-4, 0-3) with 14 points. Alyssa Taylor and Morgan Casnen added 12 and 10 points, respectively for the Blue Devils. Nakiyah Washington had a game-high 23 points for the Lady Tigers, including 15 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Josie Summerville scored 12 points for Adairsville and grabbed a team-leading 14 rebounds. Havyn Isaac also reached double figures for the Tigers with 10 points. Coriana McDaniel scored eight points. Breeana Wilson added six points and Lori Cimino two points for Adairsville. The Lady Tigers (2-7, 1-2) host Murray County Monday night at 6 p.m. and will entertain Cass Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 49, PAULDING COUNTY 31 The Lady Canes broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter Friday night to defeat visiting Paulding County, 49-31, in a non-region game at the Storm Center. Cartersville led 9-4 after one quarter, 18-15 at halftime, and 30-25 through three quarters before winning the final eight minutes 19-6. Destiny Broughton led the visiting Lady Patriots with nine points. Kemani Watson and Kasie Brewer added six points each for Paulding County. The Lady Patriots remained winless on the season and fell to an 0-7 record. Aliyah Sellars led Cartersville with 13 points and Cio Siegler contributed 11 points. Kalli Scheff and London Shaw scored six points each. Amaya Davis scored five points, Addie Smith four, Ariana Cochran three, and DeAsia Jefferson added one point for the Lady Canes. Cartersville (3-2) plays at Calhoun Saturday afternoon. HIRAM GIRLS 54, WOODLAND 38 The Hiram Lady Hornets improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA action with a 54-38 win Friday night at Woodland. Woodland (1-4, 0-3) plays Cartersville Monday at 3 p.m. in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Tournament at Berry College.

The Cass girls basketball team blasted Mt. Zion-Carroll in the opening round of the Central-Carroll Christmas Tournament Thursday night, 78-9. Cass coach Burt Jackson pulled the starters early, cleared the bench, and gained some varsity playing time experience for much of his roster. No starters played in the second half. The Lady Colonels led 27-3 at the end of the first quarter and 55-6 at halftime. Mt. Zion fell to 1-6 on the season with the loss. Eleven different Cass players scored led by Payton Stoddard and Alexis Ware with 11 points each. Sharia Wade followed with 10. Aaliyah Curtis contributed nine points for the Lady Colonels. Amber Brittian and Damia Simpson scored eight points each. Lyric Curtis posted seven points. Londaisha Smith scored six. Kyla Michienzi posted four points while Chanel Clemmons and Brianna Stephenson added two each. Cass (4-1) will face host Central-Carroll (5-1) in the tournament semifinals Friday night at 7 p.m. The championship game will be Saturday night. Region 7-AAAAA foe and 8th-ranked Villa Rica, who edged Cass 70-62 on December 2 is the favorite on the other side of the tournament bracket.
