Recipients for November 2017: Ashton Burley -- Cass High School Rylee Moss -- Adairsville High School Charles Norman -- Woodland High School Addie Smith -- Cartersville High School The November Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month is Ashton Burley. Burley is a four-year starter and a third-year captain for the Colonels’ basketball team. The son of Brian and Stephanie Burley, his coach David Brock refers to him as a great leader both on and off the court for the Colonels. He is averaging 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in the early portion of the 2017-18 season. Burley is an exemplary student with a 3.1 GPA. He plans to continue his education and his basketball career at the collegiate level. Rylee Moss is the November Elite Athlete of the Month representing Adairsville High School. A standout on the Tigers’ swim team, the junior is daughter of Chris and Maurni Moss. “Rylee excels at all four strokes,” said her Adairsville coach Shawn Williams. “She brings passion and commitment to the pool. She is an example and a source of encouragement for her teammates. She always has a smile on her face and is ready to go,” the coach continued. Moss has maintained a 3.8 GPA while enrolled in AP and Honors classes at AHS and is currently a dual enrollment student with Chattahoochee Technical College. Moss plans to continue her swimming career in college and has been making collegiate visits this Fall. “Rylee is a natural talent, but she excels because of her work ethic and unrelenting pursuit of perfection,” Williams concluded. The Woodland High School Elite Athlete of the Month for November is Charles Norman. A sophomore point guard on the Wildcats’ basketball team, Norman has been a leader on the floor in the early 2017-18 season. Also a contributor with the Woodland track and field team, he is the son of Charles and Niesha Norman. Norman has scored 46 points through the Wildcats’ first five games, averaging 9.2 points per game. Addie Smith is the November Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School. The senior volleyball and basketball player for the Lady Canes is the daughter of Howard and Julie Smith. A three-year varsity basketball player, Smith is a team captain and contributing as a guard and small forward. “Addie is a great leader,” noted Cartersville coach Cindy Moore. “She is a true student-athlete.” Smith is currently third in scoring for the Lady Canes in the early portion of their schedule. The Adairsville High School swim team was second, Cartersville fourth, and Cass fifth at the 2017 edition of the Adairsville Tiger Plunge Saturday. Allatoona won the nine-team high school division. PHOTO: Cass wrestlers Saturday at Woodstock Invitational With a quality performance at two different tournaments, the Cass High School wrestling team picked up trophies at two different tournament Saturday. Cass placed second at the Woodstock Invitational and third at the North Atlanta Invitational. At the Woodstock tournament, Tripp Breeden won the 220-pound division while Derrick Smith (113-pounds), Nick Mills (126), Kendall Arnold (145), and Rett Moore (170) each finished second. Tyler Pilcher (132) was placed third at Woodstock. Noah Hoffmeier (160) placed fifth. Alex Depasquale (152), Kameron Depasquale (138), and Jake Johnson (106) each finished sixth. Sonoraville won the Woodstock Invitational. Creekview was third and North Paulding fourth in the team standings. Ben Mills won the 126-pound division at the North Atlanta tournament to lead the Colonels at that event. Blake Carrington (152) earned a runner-up spot. Andrew Ferrell (120) and Beau Smith (170) each placed third. Adan Urizar picked up a fourth place finish. Cass will be back on the mats Wednesday with a home match against North Hall.

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 51, CALHOUN 43 The Cartersville Lady Canes evened their season mark Saturday afternoon with a 51-43 win over Calhoun at the Storm Center. The visiting Yellow Jackets led 15-9 after one period and 23-19 at halftime, but Cartersville outscored Calhoun 14-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-30 lead into the final eight minutes. Erin Davis led Calhoun (0-1) with 14 points and Anna George added eight for the Jackets. Addie Smith led the Lady Canes with 17 points followed by Amaya Davis with 10. Kalli Scheff posted eight points. London Shaw six, Cio Seigler five, Aliyah Sellars three, and De”Asia Jefferson scored two points. Cartersville (2-2) plays next on December 15 and 16 with a home game against Paulding County and a road game at Calhoun. VILLA RICA GIRLS 70, CASS 62 The visiting 6th-ranked Villa Rica Lady Wildcats edged Cass Saturday afternoon 70-62. Villa Rica ( ) led 18-7 after one quarter but the Lady Colonels narrowed the margin to 27-23 at the intermission. Cass outscored the Wildcats in the third quarter and led midway through the fourth period before Villa Rica surged late for an eight point win. Cass had three players reach double figures. Lyric Curtis led with 18 points, followed by Kyla Michienzi and Payton Stoddard with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Aaliyah Curtis tossed in seven points. Alexis Ware contributed five. Amber Brittian and Chanel Clemmons added two points each. Cass (1-1, 0-1 Region 7-AAAAA) hosts Paulding County Tuesday and travels to East Paulding Friday. Both region games are scheduled for 6 p.m. ROCKMART GIRLS 56, ADAIRSVILLE 28 The Adairsville girls basketball hung tough through the first period Saturday, but a 26-3 second period ignited visiting Rockmart to a 59-28 non-region decision. Kenyard Berry scored a game-high 28 points to lead Rockmart. Molly Little added 11 points. The visiting Lady Yellow Jackets improved to 2-1 on the season. Josie Summerville scored 11 points — all in the first half — to lead Adairsville in the scoring column. Havyn Isaac scored five points and Nakiyah Washington four for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (2-4) plays at North Murray Tuesday night at 6 p.m. ROCKMART BOYS 61, ADAIRSVILLE 56 Rockmart outscored Adairsville 19-11 in the third quarter to take a 45-38 lead and held on for a 61-56 road win Saturday evening. Adairsville and Rockmart were tied 17-17 after one quarter and the host Tigers led 27-26 at the intermission. Juke Boozer and Joqan Burge led the visiting Yellow Jackets with 14 points apiece. Robert Harris scored 12 points for Rockmart. Hunter Hice led Adairsville with 20 points. Ethan Belcher totaled 11 points and Cody Henderson added eight for the Tigers. Rockmart improved to 3-0 with their win. Adairsville (1-5) plays at North Murray Tuesday night and hosts Murray County on Friday. VILLA RICA BOYS 56, CASS 52 Ashton Burley scored 20 points while Markeldrick Powell and Justice Hayes chipped in nine points each, but the Colonels fell to an unbeaten Villa Rica team Saturday evening at Cass, 56-52. The visiting Wildcats improved to 3-0 on the season and are now 2-0 in region play. The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department youth football teams in the 8U, 10U, and 12U divisions traveled to Savannah this weekend with a following of about 400 fans and came away Saturday with a pair of state championships. The 12U and 10U Cartersville teams won Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) state titles at Grayson Football Stadium in Savannah. 12U CARTERSVILLE 16, SAVANNAH WHIPPERS 8 Christian Vera scored on a 45 yard touchdown reception from Brelace Williams and Khristian Lando scored on a six yard run for Cartersville. Trevor Harris connected on a pair of two-point conversion kicks. Although the entire defensive unit was credited with playing well, KJ Johnson, Christian Wood, Braydon Pope, Tae Cochran, and Lando were credited with outstanding defensive plays. Brodie McWhorter threw for a pair of touchdowns and picked off a pass to set up another score to help lead the way for Cartersville. Jakeveon Porter caught a 45-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 30 yards for another touchdown. Porter also added an extra point. JaCaiden Leonard scored on a 45 yard fumble recovery, a 65 yard interception return, and added a 15 yard touchdown run. Jabari Davis hauled in a 65-yard touchdown on a halfback pass, while Baylon Long and Jordyn Woods were credited with outstanding defensive efforts. Jorian Bailey made 10 tackles, including four for loss to lead the Cartersville defense. Dixon Lindsey and Pyerston Chambers had six tackles each. Peyton Paul added five tackles. The Woodland boys basketball team lost its Region 7-AAAAA opener Friday night to the visiting Kell Longhorns, 67-54. Kell (2-1) led by four at halftime with the Longhorns extending their lead to double figures midway through the third quarter. Hunter Johnson led Woodland with 16 points. Kenny Jinks added 11 for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-4) plays at Carrollton Tuesday. RINGGOLD 56, ADAIRSVILLE 42 In a battle of Tigers, Ringgold improved to 5-0 in a pairing of Region 6-AAA teams. Adairsville (1-4) hosts Rockmart Saturday and plays at North Murray Tuesday.

RINGGOLD GIRLS 67, ADAIRSVILLE 39 The Adairsville girls basketball team lost at Ringgold Friday night, 67-39. Ringgold led 22-7 after one quarter, 32-19 at halftime, and 55-33 after three quarters. Rachel Akers led all scorers in the game for Ringgold with 16 points. She was followed by Sydney Pittman with 13, Riley Nayadley with 11, and Kaylee Womack with 10 points. Adairsville was led by Josie Summerville with 13 points and Nakiyah Washington with 12 points. Aaliyah Applin scored four points with Breeana Wilson scoring three points. Havyn Isaac, Lori Cimino, and Chezne McConnell added two points apiece. Coriana McDaniel scored one. Ringgold improved to 4-1. Adairsville (1-4) hosts Rockmart Saturday at 6 p.m. KELL GIRLS 44, WOODLAND 31 The Lady Cats led early, but the visiting Kell Longhorns outscored Woodland 17-4 in the second period to lead 23-17 at halftime. A competitive third quarter ended with Kell up 30-25 and the Lady Horns pulled away in the final quarter for a 13-point win. Whitney Harris scored a game-high 17 points for Woodland to lead all scorers. Madgie Robinson added five, Carli Clymer four, and Nickiah Metcalf three points for the Lady Cats. Ansley Evans and Lauren Morris scored two point each. Kell (3-1) was led by Ashley Sparrow with 11 points. Kya Williams and Natalie Foster contributed nine and eight points, respectively. Woodland slipped to 1-2 on the season and plays at Carrollton Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cartersville girls basketball team earned a non-region victory Tuesday night at the Storm Center by holding off visiting Pepperell, 38-29. Cartersville led at each quarter stop and kept the visiting Lady Dragons from reaching double figures in any of the four periods. “We played great defense tonight,” said Cartersville head coach Cindy Moore. “Our best of the year so far.” The Lady Canes led 14-8 after one quarter and were up 21-12 at halftime. Cartersville then extended its lead to 31-20 after three periods and held on for a nine point victory. Anna Cowan led Pepperell (1-1) with eight points. Kinsey Wright added five. The Lady Canes were led in scoring by Amaya Davis who totaled nine points. Cio Seigler followed with seven points and grabbed eight rebounds. Addie Smith also scored seven points. London Shaw finished with six points. Kalli Scheff contributed four points. Ariana Cochran scored three points while De’Asia Jefferson added two points. Jefferson also led the Lady Canes with nine rebounds. Cartersville (1-2) hosts Calhoun Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

The Georgia High School Association Reclassification Committee met Monday at the GHSA Office in Thomaston to finalize the first-ever mid-cycle adjustment. GHSA regions have historically been set for two-year cycles, but have now moved to a four-year model with a mid-cycle adjustment if a school’s FTE count moved by 20 percent or more. There were only two changes reported involving regions inclusive of local high schools and neither change had anything to do with the 20 percent rule. Region 6-A that includes Excel Christian Academy adds one new school — Mt. Bethel Christian — while Region 6-AAA that includes local school Adairsville loses Bremen who will move down to Class AA. Excel is the smallest school in GHSA with an FTE of 29. That is a drop of 68.1 percent from a count of 91 in 2015. The largest private school in Region 6-A is Mt. Paran with an FTE count of 454. There are 19 schools in Region 6-A with 15 playing football. Thirteen of the schools in the league are private. Eleven private schools in Region 6-A play football. In Region 7-AAAAA, Woodland and Cass are included with three of the five largest schools in the Class AAAAA. Rome is the largest school in the classification and Paulding County is the second largest school Class AAAAA. East Paulding's FTE ranks it as the fifth largest school in the classification. Cartersville is the ninth largest school in Class AAAA and the second largest in Region 5-AAAA. Chapel Hill is the largest school in Region 5-AAAA and the fourth largest in the classification. Sandy Creek is the fourth smallest school in Class AAAA and the smallest in the region. The obvious change in Adairsville’s league, Region 6-AAA, is the absence of Bremen. Bremen was granted a waiver of its Reclassification Attendance Zone Restriction which forced the school to play in a higher classification than its FTE numbers the past two years. With that waiver, Bremen will move to Region 5-AA. Sonoraville is the largest school in Region 6-AAA and the fifth largest school in Class AAA. NFL VIC BEASLEY -- Atlanta Falcons (3rd yr. pro; Clemson University; Adairsville HS)... the Falcons' starter at weak side linebacker did not crack the stat line Sunday, but the Atlanta Falcons defeated Tampa Bay 34-20 to improve to 7-4 on the year and remain in the midst of the NFC playoff race. Atlanta is in third place in the NFC South behind New Orleans and Carolina -- both 8-3. The Falcons host the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday. Despite missing three starters from their normal starting lineup, the Adairsville Tigers wrestling team won four of five matches Saturday to place third at the Hiram Thanksgiving Duals. The holiday weekend duals format tournament consisted of ten teams. Led by Nic Jackson and Steven Lynch who went undefeated on the day, Adairsville recorded wins over Hiram, Cartersville, and Chattooga. Their only loss was to Veterans High School. Cartersville’s Jonathon De La Cruz was undefeated on the day in five matches for the Canes. Fellow senior Conner Adams and junior Jabril Williams were 4-1 for Cartersville. The Hurricanes were 2-3 in the tournament with wins over East Paulding and Newnan. Adairsville wrestles next at Pepperell on Tuesday. Cartersville competes in the Chattooga Duals next Saturday.

The Adairsville Tigers wrestling team sent split squads to a pair of duals competitions last Saturday and captured a second place at the Cherokee Duals and a third place at the Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Duals. Then on this past Tuesday, the Tigers competed at the Cartersville High School 6th Annual Colonel Harvey Robinson Duals and placed fourth. Adairsville collected wins over East Paulding, Ringgold, and eventual tournament winner Chattooga, but fell to Fannin County and Armuchee. Those two teams ultimately finished third and second, respectively. The Robinson Duals — named for the first wrestling state champion at Cartersville High School — included a dozen high school teams and three middle school teams. The Purple Hurricanes wrestling team won three of five matches on the day, led by senior Jonathan De La Cruz who was undefeated in five matches. The Cass wrestling team defeated Cherokee, Johns Creek, and Creekview this past Tuesday to reach the finals of the Etowah Duals. It marked the third finals for the Colonels in three tournaments this season. Cass won the East Coweta Duals November 11 and the Blackbeard Duals at Allatoona November 18. Gilmer defeated Cass in the championship match of the Etowah Duals to avenge an earlier loss to the Colonels at the Allatoona tournament. Woodland took fourth in a tough field at the Etowah Duals. Gilmer beat the Wildcats in the semifinals. After being state runner-up last year in both duals and traditional, the Wildcats are yet to win a tournament this year, finishing third at both the Lassiter individual tournament and the Blackbeard Duals.
