The Adairsville girls’ golf team started Tuesday’s final round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAA State Tournament in fourteenth place and that is where the Lady Tigers finished the 2017 championship. The AAA girls’ tournament was hosted Monday and Tuesday by Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear, GA. The Lady Tigers shot 331-365 in the 36-hole championship. The Jackets finished 13 shots ahead of runner-up Union County, 26 shots ahead of third place North Murray, and 29 strokes ahead of fourth place Bremen. The remainder of the top ten in the classification included Pierce County, Franklin County, Westminster, Southeast Bulloch, Savannah Arts Academy, and Hart County. Dawson County, Pace Academy, and Lumpkin County placed eleventh through thirteenth. Peach County and Pike County were fifteenth and sixteenth, respectively. Rutland’s Carrol Pyon shot 74-72 for a 2-over-par 146 total to win the individual girls title in Class AAA. Tori Owens of Murray County and Kate Mashburn of Calhoun tied for the runner-up spot with a 154 total. Owens shot 74-80. Mashburn fired a pair of 77s. Keighley Hudziak shot 105-113 and finished 46th as an individual to lead the Adairsville players. Cortni Jacobs shot 121-109 to tie for 51st. Lindsey Angland shot 164-143 and Sabrina Fanello rounded out Adairsville's scoring with rounds of 105 and 203.

Stuart Chester, head baseball coach at Cartersville, has resigned to take the same position at Buford High School. Chester won 532 games with the Purple Hurricanes over 20 years — including six state titles, 10 Final Four appearances, and 14 region titles. The Cartersville program was named ‘Program of the Decade’ for the first ten years of the 2000’s. Cartersville won the Class AA state championship in 2001 and 2002, then followed those wins in 2003 with a Class AAA title. The Canes then won Class AAA again in 2008, 2009, and 2013. The Buford program has three state titles — winning Class B in 1977, Class AA in 2011, and Class AAAA in 2015. Chester has 563 career coaching wins in 26 seasons. Dr. J. Howard Hinesley, Cartersville City Schools superintendent, told WBHF Sports that the school system would now begin accepting applications for the position. Cartersville was 22-10 this past season and finished fourth in Region 5-AAAA. The Canes were ousted in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs by perennial power Blessed Trinity. Chester follows coach Tony Wolfe at Buford. The Wolves were 20-14 in 2017 and lost to Wayne County in the Class AAAAA state tournament’s second round.

The 9 Stars Aces 9U baseball team went a perfect 5-0 this past weekend to win the 2017 Perfect Game Super25 9U Georgia Super Qualifier played at LakePoint Sporting Community. The Aces, comprised of mostly Bartow County youngsters, had pool play victories over the 643 DP Cougars (8-7) and the Battlefield Braves (11-6) to be seeded second in the seven-team field going into single-elimination bracket play. In the championship bracket, the Aces defeated the Game Time Warriors 12-1 in the first round. They followed that with a 6-5 over the North Georgia BlueClaws in the semifinals and beat the Bandits (Tuscaloosa, AL) in the championship game, 5-4. The Adairsville High School girls’ golf team was the only local team to qualify for this year’s GHSA State Tournaments and the Lady Tigers opened play Monday in the Class AAA two-day, 36-hole championship at Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. After 18 holes, Adairsville is in 14th place in the sixteen team championship. This is the first year that all classifications and genders of high school golf in the Georgia High School Association are competing in 36-hole championship tournaments. Teams qualified for the GHSA state finals through Area qualifying tournaments. Calhoun leads the state finals after Round 1 by three shots over Bremen and six shots ahead of Union County. North Murray is fourth after 18 holes and ten shots back of Calhoun. Three of the top four teams — Calhoun, Bremen, and North Murray are members of Adairsville's Region 6-AAA. Tori Owens of Murray County (also a Region 6-AAA school) and Carroll Pyon of Rutland High School share the first round lead among individual players. They both fired 2-over-par 74s on Monday. Calhoun’s Kate Mashburn was the only other player to break 80 and is in third place with a 5-over-par 77. Sabrina Fanello and Keighley Hudziak both shot 105 to lead Adairsville scorers in the first round. Those two players are tied for 44th individually. Courtni Jacobs is in 55th place after shooting 121 and Lindsey Angland is 67th with a 164. The Lady Tigers will look to move up the leaderboard Tuesday during the final 18 holes of the state championship tournament.

Sam Howard put together a pair of impressive back-to-back starts for the Hartford Yard Goats and the stellar year put together by the locals on the Reinhardt University softball team came to a surprising and disappointing conclusion this past week to highlight the latest edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow. The Reinhardt women were playing in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round at Ottawa, Kansas and had won two games and lost one in the double-elimination format event. The Eagles, who lost to host Ottawa (KS) University earlier in the tournament, had worked their way back through the losers’ bracket for a championship round rematch with Ottawa. Rain set in and halted a 2-2 tied game and then the game and the remainder of the tournament was ultimately cancelled. Ottawa was named Opening Round tournament winners and advances to the NAIA Finals in Clermont, Florida that begin this Friday. Reinhardt players, coaches, adminstrators, and fans were upset by the host school’s decision to not work on the field after the rain. The school also did not have a tarpaulin to cover the infield. The NAIA stated organization rules in place in the event of an Opening Round tournament rainout. Those rules enabled Ottawa (39-17) to advance. MiLB SAM HOWARD — Hartford Yard Goats - Double-A Eastern League - Colorado Rockies organization (4th-yr. pro, LHP, Georgia Southern University, Cartersville HS). . . made a pair of impressive starts this past week for the Yard Goats. Last Tuesday, he tossed a 7-inning, one-hit shutout as Hartford won at Portland (BOS) 3-0. Howard walked one and fanned four Sea Dogs. Sunday at home, Howard worked into the fifth inning but received a no-decision as Hartford beat the Akron Rubber Ducks (CLE) 5-2. Howard allowed one earned run, four hits, no walks, and struck out two. For the season, he is now 1-3 in seven starts and 35 innings. He has 29 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA. Opponents have a .161 batting average against him in one start at AAA Albuquerque and six starts at Double-A Hartford. The Yard Goats are 19-22 this season and in fifth place in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. They are six games behind the first-place Trenton Thunder (NYY). CONNOR JUSTUS — Inland Empire 66ers - Class A Advanced California League - Los Angeles Angels organization (2nd yr. pro, SS, Georgia Tech, Cartersville HS). . . tripled, drove in a run, and scored a run in a 1-for-4 performance Sunday at home during a 7-4 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks. Justus also had a 1-for-4 game last Thursday in an 8-7 loss to Stockton that included a double and a run scored. After hitting safely in 8-of-10 games May 3-13, he has gone 2-for-23 over his last seven games with his batting average slipping to .203 for the year. Justus has two homers and 12 RBIs. He has drawn 26 walks and has a .348 on base percentage as the 66er’s every day shortstop hitting generally in the six-hole. Inland Empire (22-22) is in third place in the South Division of the California League, four games behind division leading Rancho Cucamonga (LAD). COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Fr., LHP, Cartersville HS). . . worked an inning and one-third allowing one hit and recorded a strikeout as Auburn fell 8-2 Saturday to visiting Ole Miss. The Tigers (34-22, 16-14 SEC) won the first two games of the conference series. Anderson is 1-0 on the season in 12 appearances with 12.1 innings pitched and nine strikeouts. Auburn must now face Ole Miss again Tuesday night in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament. The Tigers are the 8-seed and the Rebels are seeded ninth. The game is an elimination play-in for the double-elimination championship bracket. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Sr., RHP, Cartersville HS). . . with his team trailing 2-0, Fowler entered in the second inning and tossed three and one-third innings in an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Marian University during an elimination game at the NAIA National tournament Opening Round in Kingsport, TN. Fowler allowed two runs in the fifth inning, but both were unearned. He allowed only one hit, walked three, and struck out two. The Bulldogs went 2-2 in the national tournament with both losses coming to Indiana University Southeast. TWC finished the year 41-20. Fowler made 13 appearances this season (3 starts) and pitched 26 innings. He finished with a 2.42 ERA and 10 strikeouts. He made 22 appearances in his two seasons at Tennessee Wesleyan with a 2-1 mark, 37 innings pitched, and a 2.43 ERA with 25 strikeouts. MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (R-Sr., 1B, Cartersville HS). . . went 1-for-10 in the final Southern Conference three-game series of the regular season at Samford in Birmingham over the weekend. He had a walk, was hit twice by a pitch and scored a pair of runs in the series. For the season, Goss is hitting .316 in 51 games with seven home runs and 43 RBIs. The Spartans (31-20, 14-10 SoCon) are the 3-seed in the SoCon Tournament that begins Wednesday at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC. UNCG has a rematch with 6-seed Samford in the first round of the double-elimination championship. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands College (Soph., RHP, Cass HS). . . entered in the seventh inning last Thursday of the Chargers final game of the year and allowed a hit to the only batter he faced. GHC was knocked out of the NJCAA East Central District tournament by conference-foe East Georgia 12-4. The Chargers finished the season 40-21 and were the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Associaton (GCAA) tournament champions. Hood pitched 12.1 innings this season, struck out 14, and finished the year with a 1-1 record, one save, and had a 1.46 ERA. HAYDEN SINIARD — Chattahoochee Valley CC (Fr., RHP, Woodland HS). . . entered in the sixth inning and pitching an inning and one-third last Monday in a 12-4 loss to Shelton State CC in the Alabama Community College Conference championship tournament. He allowed one earned run, a walk, and fanned one batter. For the year, Siniard made 15 appearances and finished with a 2-1 record and a 3.26 ERA with 14 strikeouts. David Denham of Athens shot three rounds in the 60s at Cartersville Country Club this weekend to capture the Georgia State Golf Association's 2017 Mid-Amateur Championship. Denham shot 67-66-69 for a 14-under-par 202 total to win by two shots over Dalton's David Noll, Jr. Noll was the only other player in the field to shoot three rounds in the 60s. He shot 67-69-68 on the 7,006-yard championship layout to finish 12-under-par at 204. Embry Vance of Dalton placed third at 207 (73-64-70) and opening round leader Jon Kennedy of Macon finished fourth at 6-under-par (66-73-71). The champion Denham, played collegiately at the University of Georgia and was a member of the 2005 Bulldogs' national championship team. He won the Georgia Amateur Championship in 2004. The 54-hole tournament was the fifth GSGA Championship hosted by Cartersville Country Club. A total of 370 players entered this year's Mid-Amateur Championship and there were seven, 18-hole qualifiers held statewide in April and May. 144 players qualified for the tournament-proper at Cartersville Country Club. Twenty-nine exempt players competed at Cartersville based on other GSGA events. The remaining 115 spots were filled at the qualifiers. Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are a GSGA member and age 25 or older as of May 19, 2017. David Denham of Athens fired rounds of 67-66 (11-under par) Friday and Saturday at Cartersville Country Club to take a three-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the 2017 Georgia State Golf Association’s Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship. David Noll, Jr. and Vance Embry — both of Dalton — are in second and third place with totals of 8-under par and 7-under par, respectively. The Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship is open to players at age 25 or older and the field at Cartersville Country Club was comprised of 144 players, but was narrowed to the low 70 players and ties following Saturday’s round. The tournament began with qualifying with seven different 18-hole qualifiers around the state — including Cartersville — in April and May. There were 370 total entries this year with 115 spots earned through the qualifiers and 29 player exemptions. The Bartow County Little League (major) regular season concluded Thursday night with the Orioles wrapping up the regular season title. Now all ten teams begin a post-season tournament that runs Monday, May 22 through Friday, May 26. The Orioles and 2nd-seeded Braves will receive byes to face opening round survivors on Tuesday night. The fourth through sixth seeded teams are also placed in the quarterfinal round. The complete playoff schedule is listed below. The Braves’ Brice Craig finished the regular season with a .667 batting average to lead the league. He was followed by the Orioles’ Braden Powell (.636) and Tyler Driggers (.633). One round of the 54-hole 2017 Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship is in the books and several players with local connections are in the heat of the battle. The 2017 Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship began Friday at Cartersville Country Club with 18 holes of stroke play each day through Sunday. Players at age 25 or older were eligible for this Georgia State Golf Association Championship and the field of 144 qualifying players will be cut to the low 70 and ties after Saturday’s round. Jon Kennedy shot a 6-under par 66 Friday to take a one shot lead over four players, including Cartersville Country Club member Cres Dodd of Calhoun, David Noll of Dalton, David Denham of Athens, and Christian Raynor of Kennesaw. Chad Branton (photo right) of Cartersville is tied for seventh after firing an opening round 69. Chase Jones, also of Cartersville, is tied for thirteenth after a first round 70. Robbie Van Gorder, another Cartersville Country Club member also shot an under-par 71 and is tied for seventeenth. A total of 370 players entered this year’s championship. 29 players were exempt from qualifying and the remaining 115 spots were filled by players who qualified in one of seven, 18-hole qualifiers in April and May. The qualifiers were held in Savannah, Flowery Branch, Columbus, Warner Robins, Alpharetta, Hampton, and Cartersville. The tournament length for Cartersville Country Club is 7,006 yards and plays to par 72. This is the fifth GSGA-sanctioned championship hosted by Cartersville Country. John Engler, Jr., of Augusta shot 6-under par to win the Georgia Mid-Am Championship last year on his home course Augusta Country Club. Engler shot a 1-over par 73 Friday and is tied for 27th. Following a full week of post-season playoff games, the Cartersville Little League (major) Championship tournament is down to its final three teams. The Crackers finished in second place during the regular season, but are now the only undefeated team remaining in the double-elimination playoffs. The Crackers have wins over the Padres, Dodgers, and Braves to reach the championship round needing only one more win to clinch the tournament title. The Indians and the Braves are the other two remaining teams in the playoffs and both have one loss. Those two teams play each other Monday for the right to meet the Crackers in the championship round, but will need to win twice in the finals. The Braves finished the regular season with only one loss and in first place.
