Cartersville made short work of Pepperell Friday night at LakePoint in a 10-0, five-inning, run-rule win that was the Canes’ third game of the 2017 Rawlings Classic. The win makes Cartersville 3-0 in the event. J.P. Martin (photo) scattered a pair of hits and struck out six in four innings on the mound for Cartersville. Martin earned the pitching win and John Reed Evans needed only six pitches to get through a spotless fifth inning to close out the game. Cass fell behind early and could not muster enough offense Friday afternoon at LakePoint in Emerson during a 7-2 loss to the Class AAAAA 7th-ranked Kell Longhorns. The win by Kell earned a two-game, region split in their series with the Colonels. Cass won Thursday night 7-6. Kell put runs on the scoreboard in four of the first five innings Friday, including four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Cass managed their only runs in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI double by Jake Collum. Jake Lecroy (6.2 IP, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher for the Longhorns. Noah Dawkins and Hunter Moody combined for five hits and three RBIs to help lead Kell’s offense. Austin Pruett (4 IP, 6ER, 10H, 2BB, 3K) started for Cass on the mound and was saddled with the loss. Steven Spell (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K) worked the Colonels’ final two innings from the bump. Collum (photo) finished with two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Clay Means, Bailey Campbell (double), Gavin Young, and Tyler Henden (double) had the remaining Cass hits. Kell improved its season mark to 17-8 overall and 7-4 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass (14-12, 7-6) hosts East Paulding Monday and travels to Dallas to face the Raiders Wednesday in their next two-game Region 7AAAAA series.

The Cartersville baseball team defeated Dunwoody Friday afternoon 8-1 at LakePoint in Emerson for the Canes’ second pool game victory of the 2017 Rawlings Select Tournament. Cartersville posted six runs in the third inning to break open a scoreless game. The first occurred without benefit of a hit. Three walks and an error led to the initial run. Jacob Fowler then gave the Canes a 2-0 lead with an RBI single. Spencer Dickey lined a two-RBI double for a 4-0 advantage before another Dunwoody error and a balk resulted in a 6-0 difference. Canes’ starting pitcher, Mason Barnett, kept the Wildcats off the board most of the afternoon. He had a one-hit shutout going into the sixth inning, but after two were out in the sixth he hit two batters and walked two for Dunwoody’s only run of the game. Barnett (photo left) earned the pitching win and combined with Jacob Fowler for a one-hitter. Barnett walked three and struck out three. Fowler tossed a shutout seventh inning and fanned one. Back-to-back doubles by Anthony Seigler and Devin Warner, followed by a two-out RBI single by Barnett plated the Hurricanes final two runs in the bottom of the sixth to account for the 8-1 final score. He allowed six runs, three earned on four hits and six walks in three and two-thirds innings. With the loss, Dunwoody is now 9-13 for the season. Brett Gaddy singled into right field Thursday night to drive in Zach Yancey for a walk-off, game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning that capped a furious comeback by the Cass Colonels in a 7-6 victory over visiting, 7th-ranked Kell. With the game knotted at 6-6 going to the home half of the seventh, Yancey led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Johnson. After Nathan Smith was hit by a pitch, Gaddy provided the game winning hit. The final inning dramatics were set up by a Bailey Campbell home run to tie the game in the sixth inning. Down 6-4, Clay Means singled with one out and Campbell (photo) powered one over the centerfield wall to tie the game. Yancey drove in a Cass run in the fifth inning that pulled the Colonels to within two runs. RBIs by Gavin Young (groundout) and Clay Means (single) plated the first two Cass runs in the bottom of the second. Kell posted two runs in the first inning and another in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. The Longhorns added three more runs in the top of the fourth to lead 6-2. In the 3-2 win, Woodland scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Paulding County tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Wildcats pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to regain a 3-2 lead. Woodland’s Tommy Peed walked two batters, but escaped the final inning without a run to garner a save and preserve the Woodland one-run victory. NORTH MURRAY 9, ADAIRSVILLE 8 The Adairsville Tigers saw an 8-3 lead get away over the final two and one-half innings Thursday night in a 9-8, extra inning loss at North Murray. Adairsville held early leads of 4-1 after two innings and 6-3 after four frames. The Tigers then posted two more runs in the top of the sixth before the Mountaineers mounted their comeback and eventually scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. The game was deadlocked 8-8 after seven innings. Chase Powell, the fourth pitcher utilized by the Tigers, was tagged with the loss. He allowed a leadoff single in the final inning, then committed an error with the game-winning run ultimately scoring on a passed ball. Cartersville fell behind early, but scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a lead that launched the Canes to a 10-2 victory over Walnut Grove in an opening round game at the 2017 Perfect Game Rawilings Select Classic at LakePoint in Emerson. Cartersville pitcher Anthony Seigler (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 8K) limited the Warriors’ offense through the first five innings. Levi Ayers worked a scoreless sixth and Harrison Osborn tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the Canes’ win. Jake Gooch started Cartersville’s decisive fourth inning when he was hit by a pitch. Jacob Fowler (photo left) followed with an RBI drive that scored Gooch. Spencer Dickey walked and the baserunners moved up when Brant Smith sacrificed, but also reached on an infield error. Preston Welchel then coaxed a base on balls to push across a second run that tied the score 2-2. Seigler followed with a sacrifice fly that gave the Canes a 3-2 lead before Devin Warner singled through the right side for a 4-2 Cartersville advantage. Cartersville went up 5-2 in the fifth with some help from the Warriors and some small ball. A Walnut Grove error, single by Fowler, sacrifice by Dickey, a walk, and a hit batsman expanded the Canes’ lead to three runs. Welchel got the RBI with the hit by pitch. In the top of the sixth, Cartersville — playing as the visiting team — put the game away with five more runs. Warner, Noah Daniel, J.P. Martin, Fowler, Dickey, and Jordan Wilkie all had hits in the inning to go with two more walks. Fowler finished with three hits, two RBIs, and scored two runs. Warner was 2-for-3, including a double, two RBIs, a stolen base, and a run. Daniel was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in one. Woodland took a 6-0 lead through the top of the fifth inning Tuesday night at Villa Rica, then held on for a 7-3 Region 7AAAAA win. Villa Rica scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Grayson Bagwell (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 8H, 0BB, 3K) got the job done on the mound for Woodland with a complete-game pitching win. Hunter Reaid (3 RBIs), Garrett Cornett (RBI), Jacob Frye, Cauy Williams, and Jordan Lee had the Woodland base hits. Reaid, Frye, and Dylan Webb each stole a base. The Adairsville baseball team battled back from a three-run deficit Tuesday night, but ultimately succumbed to the visiting Class AAA 2nd-ranked Ringgold Tigers, 7-3. Ringgold’s Nathan Camp tossed a three-hitter and did not allow an earned run. He walked three and fanned nine for the pitching win. Ringgold scored three runs in the top of the first, but Adairsville tied the game with three runs in the fourth. The visitors took control with a three-run fifth inning and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Sam Seaman, Hunter Hice, and Noah Dutton had the Adairsville hits. Garrett Mishoe and Caden Gibbs drove in runs. Ringgold improved to 18-4 overall and 9-1 in Region 6AAA. Adairsville (8-13, 3-7) is scheduled to play at North Murray Thursday and will host Coahulla Creek Friday. Both games are 5:55pm starts.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team took the first game of this week’s four-game series with South Georgia State Tuesday night at LakePoint with a 6-1 win. The Chargers took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the fourth inning and added single runs in the sixth and seventh frames on their way to victory. The Hawks scored their only run in the eighth inning. Jake Lovvorn earned the win for Chargers. He tossed seven innings, surrendering one run, nine hits, striking out two, and walking one. Bradley Hood worked the final two innings on the mound for Georgia Highlands. He did not allow a run, hit, or walk and struck out three. The Chargers’ three-run fourth was ignited by a double from Caleb McElwaney and a single by Miguel Urbina. GHC produced eleven hits. John White, McElwaney, and Matt Vaccaro had multiple hit games for the Chargers. Grant Bodison and Urbina finished with two RBIs each. South Georgia slipped to 26-13 overall and 4-5 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play with the loss. The Chargers improved to 25-13 overall and 5-4 in conference games. Georgia Highlands and South Georgia State will continue their series Friday with a single game at 5:30pm in Douglas, GA. The Hawks and Chargers then play a doubleheader Saturday in Douglas beginning at 1pm.

The Cass baseball team trailed Rome 7-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night at home, but rallied with a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth for a 10-7 Region 7AAAAA victory. COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD AUBREE COLE — Jacksonville State University (Freshman, Distance, Cartersville HS). . . placed ninth in the 1500M run with a time of 5:12.76 last Saturday as JSU hosted and won the eight-team Choccolocco Challenge. The Gamecocks compete this Friday and Saturday at the Alabama A&M Bulldog Invitational in Huntsville. SPENCER FIELDS (right) — Rhodes College (Sophomore, Distance, Kingston resident, Darlington HS). . . came within seconds of a new school record this past weekend in St. Louis, MO at the Washington University Invitational. His time was 14:56.29. The Lynx host a home meet this Saturday in Memphis. BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State University (Junior, Sprint/Hurdle/Jumps, Cartersville HS). . . finished third in the 100M Hurdles with a time of 15.24 in the finals and was fourth in the Triple Jump with a mark of 36 feet, 5 inches last Saturday as the Gamecocks hosted and won the eight-team Choccolocco Challenge. The Gamecocks compete this weekend at the Alabama A&M Bulldog Invitational in Huntsville. COLLEGE TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sophomore, Cartersville resident, Laurel Springs Academy). . . won her line 2 singles match 6-1, 6-2 and paired with Carmen Blanco for a line 2 doubles win as the Lady Cards blanked Bowling Green last Friday, 7-0. She then defeated her Buffalo University opponent 6-3, 6-4 at line 2 and again teammed with Blanco for a doubles win as BSU defeated Buffalo 5-2 Sunday. Gollhofer has a 9-5 singles record this season playing all her matches at either line 1 or 2. She also has a 10-4 doubles mark and has been paired to play at all three lines throughout the season.
