  • 2nd annual Vic Beasley/FCA 5-on-5 basketball tourney is September 3

    Former Adairsville High School star, Clemson Tigers' All-American, and current Atlanta Falcons' linebacker Vic Beasley, Jr., teams up again with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to present their 2nd annual 5-on-5 basketball tournament at Adairsville High School. The tournament will take place Saturday, September 3. All participants will receive a t-shirt and all proceeds benefit the FCA at Adairsville High School and Adairsville Middle School. The entry fee is $100 per team and admission will be charged for spectators. The entry deadline is August 26.   • Excel Christian Academy softball in Model Invitational this weekend; other local teams prepare for s

    The 2016 high school softball season gets underway this weekend and locally, the Excel Christian Academy Lady Eagles will be playing in the Model Invitational in Rome. Excel opens play in the tournament Friday against Pepperell and Cedartown at 5pm and 7pm. The Eagles are then scheduled to play Chattooga and Southeast Whitfield on Saturday at 10am and 12 noon. The Eagles will be the first of the local teams to hit the diamond in an official game, although the Adairsville Lady Tigers are scheduled for a pre-season scrimmage at Armuchee Thursday at 5:30pm. Other games early on the local schedule include Adairsville at Excel and Cass against Central-Carroll on Monday, August 8. The Cass-Central game will be played at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. The Woodland Lady Cats will scrimmage at Kennesaw Mountain Tuesday, August 9 at 5:45pm and will open their 2016 campaign at Carrollton on Thursday, August 11. Excel also travels to Gordon Central on Tuesday, August 9. Cass plays at Kell Thursday, August 11, while Cartersville hosts Cedartown that same afternoon. The first two weeks of early season games continues on Saturday, August 13 when Cartersville hosts Adairsville in a doubleheader at 12 noon. New Excel head coach, Michael Adcock, takes his Lady Eagles into the Model Tournament with one of the school’s best ever groups of returning players. Senior pitcher/first baseman Hannah Lee, a transfer from Cass, will join junior Taylor Gibson with responsibilities in the pitching circle. Three other seniors — shortstop Brighton McCollum, outfielder Lindsay Mauldin, and second baseman Eliza Baker — will be counted on for leadership. Whitney Harris, a junior third baseman, and junior catcher Rachael Parrott are also key returnees for the Lady Eagles. The 2016 season marks the first year of a new region alignment for all schools in the Georgia High School Association. Excel will be in the 18-school Region 6-A that includes Bowdon, Christian Heritage, Darlington, Fellowship Christian, G.S.D., Gordon Lee, King’s Ridge, Morris Innovative, Mt. Paran, Mt. Pisgah, Mt. Zion-Carroll, North Cobb Christian, St. Francis, Trion, Walker, and Whitefield Academy. In Class A, a power points system is in use to determine state playoff participants for both the public and private state playoffs. In all other classifications, the top four teams from each region qualify for the state playoffs. Adairsville is assigned to the 10-member Region 6-AAA that includes Bremen, Calhoun, Coahulla Creek, Haralson County, Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe, Murray County, North Murray, Ringgold, and Sonoraville. Cartersville will play in the seven-member Region 5-AAAA with Cedartown, Central-Carroll, Chapel Hill, LaGrange, Sandy Creek, and Troup. Woodland and Cass are assigned to the nine-member Region 7-AAAAA. Other schools in that region include Carrollton, East Paulding, Hiram, Kell, Paulding County, Rome, and Villa Rica.

    Samantha Mobley and Harleigh Mobley both captured one championship and one runner-up finish each to lead the Cartersville Cobias at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Swim Meet July 22-23 at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center. Including preliminaries, there were 90 races over the two day state meet.   • Walker captures PGA Championship; Henley rallies for tie for 22nd

    Texas native Jimmy Walker became the fourth different first-time major champion Sunday evening by holding off a late charge from Jason Day to win the 98th playing of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Walker shot 65-66-68-67, 14-under par, for the victory. Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy had three current players to make the cut at golf’s final major of the year. The top SHGA player in the field was Russell Henley who shot a pair of 68s over the final 36 holes to tie for 22nd at 4-under par. Aaron Baddeley shot a final round 68 to tie for 49th and Harris English slipped to a tie for 60th with a 74-71 finish. Former SHGA player, Kevin Kisner, shot 65-70 over the final 36 holes to tie for 18th. Chris Kirk, another current Hamilton Golf Academy player, along with Acworth’s Jason Bohn — a former SHGA player — missed the cut.     The Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association (BGMSAA) recently released schedules for their 2016 Fall sports and activities. BGMSAA is a middle school league that include Adairsville Middle, Cartersville Middle, Cass Middle, South Central Middle, and Woodland Middle schools in Bartow County. Ashworth Middle, Calhoun Middle, and Red Bud Middle schools are in the eight-school league from Gordon County.   • MiLB update: Justus keeps it going

    The fast start to Connor Justus’ professional career continued this past week as he put together another set of solid performances. Justus started his pro career in June with the Rookie Pioneer League Orem Owlz in Orem, Utah, but his early success earned his first promotion in July and the Los Angeles Angels’ front office moved the Cartersville native infielder to their Class A affiliate in Iowa, the Burlington Bees. Capsules for MiLB players with local ties to Cartersville and Bartow County, plus a glimpse at local collegiate players who participated in the summer MiLB-sanctioned Sun Belt League: Grant DeBruin — Hagerstown Suns — Class A, South Atlantic League — MLB Parent Club, Washington Nationals -- (Adairsville HS) The former Adairsville High School and University of Alabama-Huntsville standout has a .318 batting average (14-for-44) over his last ten games with two homers and 12 RBIs. Although he has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, raising his season batting average to .250 with four homeruns and 24 RBIs, he saw action Saturday for the first time in a week. He was 1-for-5 and scored a run. He played first base and hit fifth in the batting order during a 6-2 win over the Hickory Crawdads. DeBruin, 26, spent the first part of the year in extended spring training and was briefly at the Advanced Class A level with the Potomac Nationals. His season stats reflect his time with both clubs. Hagerstown is 21-14 in the SAL second half, currently leading the Northern Division by one game over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Marlins affiliate). Hagerstown already clinched a post-season spot by winning the division’s first half. Dalton Geekie — Rome Braves — Class A, South Atlantic League — MLB Parent Club, Atlanta Braves -- (Georgia Highlands College) Geekie has a 2-4 record with a 5.04 ERA in 30 appearances in 2016. He has one save in 44 and 2/3 innings of work and opponents have a .243 batting average against him. The most recent appearances for the former GHC Charger were July 25 and July 29. Geekie entered in the fourth inning of a 7-6 win July 25 and pitched 2 and 1/3 innings. He allowed a hit and a walk, but no runs allowing time for a Braves’ comeback win. He was called on July 30 with a baserunner on in the eighth inning and the Braves leading Greenville 5-1. He yielded an earned run on a pair of hits and a walk and recorded one strikeout. Rome is currently 18-16 in the South Atlantic League’s second half standings, in second place, three and one-half games behind the Southern Division leading Augusta GreenJackets (SF Giants affiliate). Sam Howard — Hartford Yard Goats — Double-A, Eastern League — MLB Parent Club, Colorado Rockies -- (Cartersville HS) Howard earned his second Double-A win of the year July 27 as the Yard Goats handled the Bowie Baysox, 8-3. Howard allowed only one earned run in six innings on nine hits and one walk. He notched one strikeout. The 23-year-old former Canes and Georgia Southern University southpaw is now 6-8 on year after starting the season 4-3 with the Advanced Class A, Modesto Nuts of the California League. He has a 3.65 ERA in 20 starts and 113 and 1/3 innings. Opponents have a .255 batting average against him. The Yard Goats are 61-45 on the year and in third place in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division. They trail the Reading (PA) Fightin’ Phils by 9.5 games. Connor Justus — Burlington Bees — Class A, Midwest League — MLB Parent Club, Los Angeles Angels -- (Cartersville HS) After a fast start with the Rookie level Orem Owlz, Justus has continued his rapid progress with the Class A (full season) Burlington Bees of the Midwest League. Justus was selected in the fifth round of this year’s MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels after completing his junior season with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The former Cartersville Purple Hurricanes shortstop has now played in eight games with his new club, hitting in the six-spot in the Bees’ lineup. Justus has hit safely in six of his eight games in Class Double-A with a pair of multi-hit games. He is 9-for-29 since moving up to Burlington, and hit .344 for the Orem Owlz. He now has a .336 batting average in 34 professional games. He also has eight extra-base hits and 25 RBIs in that span. Defensively, Justus has a .942 fielding percentage in 138 total chances. He has been part of 17 double plays in 287 innings. The Burlington Bees are 19-16 in the second half standings of the Midwest League’s Western Division and are 51-54 overall in 2016. The Bees are currently 5.5 games back of division-leading Clinton LumberKings (Seattle affiliate). Donavan Tate — Rancho Cucamonga Quakes — Advanced Class A — California League — MLB Parent Club, Los Angeles Dodgers (Cartersville HS) Tate played in ten games after coming off the disable list to start the season. He has a .143 batting average in 35 at bats with a home run and four RBIs. He has played defensively at both corner outfield positions and has been utilized as a designated hitter, but has not seen action since July 6. The Quakes are 19-17 in the second half standings of the California League’s South Division. They are currently 5.5 games behind the Lancaster JetHawks (Houston Astros affiliate). Three local collegiate players with ties to Bartow County played this summer in the Sun Belt League, an MiLB affiliated college level league. All three locals played for the Marietta Patriots who finished second in the Sun Belt League’s Western Division with a 16-13 mark. Sean McDermott — Cleveland State CC — Adairsville HS — He was 2-for-4 with one RBI July 26 as the Patriots lost a wild card playoff game to Phenix City. The rising sophomore hit .264 during the summer season in 91 at bats with four homeruns and 15 RBIs. Hunter Osborn — Reinhardt University — Cartersville HS — Pitched only 14 innings during the summer schedule in four starts. The rising junior and RU starter, struck out 11 and finished with a 3.85 ERA. Chaz Wilson — Columbus State University — Cass HS — Made seven starts and one relief appearance during the summer schedule tossing 36 and 2/3 innings. The middle relief appearance was a no-decision, five inning, shutout performance that finished as a last inning wild card playoff loss to Phenix City on July 26 to close the season. The rising senior at CSU finished the summer with 24 strikeouts and a 4.66 ERA.   • Registration deadlines approaching for BCRD youth football, cheerleading, fall soccer, and volleybal

    The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department has current registrations continuing for Cheerleading, Youth Football, Fall Soccer, and Volleyball. The registration deadline for youth cheerleading, youth football, and youth fall soccer is August 7, 2016. The deadline for middle school volleyball is August 12. Cheerleading is available for ages 3-12 and the schedule runs from August to October. Cheerleading squads are divided in school area teams with games played at Hamilton Crossing Park, the old Adairsville Middle School fields, and Cunningham Stadium located on Grassdale Road at the old Cass High School. Coaches are NYSCA certified. The registration fee is $60. Youth football is available for ages 5-12 (flag football for 5 and 6 year olds) with a schedule running from August to October and the games located at the above locations listed for cheerleading. A team jersey and mouth guard is provided for ages 7-12 with equipment loaned that includes helmet, shoulder pads, and pads for pants. All equpment is returned at the completion of the season. The teams play under GRPA/GHSA rules and the coaches are NYSCA certified. The age groups are 6U Flag, 8U, 10U, and 12U. The registration is $55 for flag football and $85 for all other age groups. Fall soccer is available for girls and boys ages 4-14 and is divided into multiple gender and age groups. The season runs August through October and is designed to help players get extra playing time in a smaller league. Games are played at Hamilton Crossing Stars Soccer Field. The league follows GRPA rules and sanctions. The registration fee is $80. Volleyball is for girls in grades 6-8. Teams are split into local schol areas and are designed to help middle schoolers prepare and become familiar with the high school volleyball programs.   • Play suspended at PGA Championship; English remains in top ten

    With lightning threats in the afternoon Saturday postponing play, only 37 of the 86 players to make the cut at the 98th PGA Championship were able to complete their third rounds. Play was suspended just after 2pm Saturday at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ and the top ten players after Friday’s cut were yet to tee off. Those ten players will have 36 holes to play when play resumes at 7am Sunday morning. Robert Streb and Jimmy Walker lead the field at 9-under par. Jason Day and Emiliano Grillo are both two shot back, followed by Henrik Stenson at 6-under par. Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy has three players at Baltusrol for the final 36 holes. Harris English is currently tied for tenth at 4-under par. He did not start his third round Saturday and will play 36 holes Sunday. Russell Henley is tied for 42nd and was 1-under for the tournament through 17 holes Saturday. Aaron Baddeley finished his Saturday round and is tied for 59th after shooting 70-70-71 in the first three rounds. Another Hamilton Golf Academy player, Chris Kirk, missed the 36-hole cut with a 3-over par score. Jason Bohn of Acworth, a former SHGA player, shot 71-74 to miss the cut. Another former SHGA player, Kevin Kisner, made one of the biggest moves of the day on Saturday before play was suspended. Kisner fired a 5-under par 65 Saturday to move into a tie for sixth. The PGA Championship, golf’s fourth and final major championship of the year, will conclude Sunday evening — weather and daylight permitting. Players are competing for their portion of the $10 million purse.   • Lady Cats softball holds 2nd annual Alumni Game

    The Woodland High School softball program recently hosted its second annual Alumni Game at the Lady Cats' Woodland softball complex. "We had a great turn out," commented Lady Cats' head coach Colman Roberts. "Twenty-six alumni played in the game. We had players to participate ranging from our first graduating class all the way up to last year's graduates." The Alumni team won the game, 11-10. "It has become a great event." With the new GHSA reclassification cycle beginning this school year, Woodland and Cass are now members of the nine-member Region 7-AAAAA.   • WBHF and Bartow Sports Zone release 2016 high school football broadcast schedule

    WBHF AM1450 and 100.3FM along with Bartow Sports Zone will be broadcasting 23 local high school football games this season plus all state playoff games involving local teams. ​​ The 2016 broadcast schedule is listed below. The WBHF games will be live 'on air' with pre-game coverage starting each Friday at 6pm. The Bartow Sports Zone games will be live online at both bartowsportszone.com and wbhfradio.org with pre-game coverage starting each Friday at 7pm. In the second half of the season, Bartow Sports Zone will have three flex dates -- October 7, October 14, and November 4. This will allow the selection of the most interesting game of the week among the remaining local games not on WBHF. Game day Fridays will begin on WBHF from 7-9am with the Bartow Sports Zone radio show. This weekly show will feature interviews with the local head football coaches and include discussions of other sports activities in the community. Charles Wilson will host along with Brad Stephens, Jason Greenberg, and Kevin Pate. Countdown to Kickoff with Josh Brock and Don Startup begins on WBHF at 6pm each Friday, followed by This Week's Top Games with Kevin Pate and Alan Sanders. At 7pm, the Bartow Sports Zone online broadcast will begin with kickoff for both games at 7:30pm. The GABBY Award winning broadcast team of Matt Santini, Don Startup, Josh Brock, and Jack Howell will broadcast the WBHF games. Charles Wilson and Brad Stephens will broadcast the Johnny's NY Style Pizza 'County Game of the Week' on Bartow Sports Zone, and Mike Garcia and Connor Gambrell will have live reports from other local game sites. Once the live games are complete, WBHF will carry the Pigskin Postgame Party until midnight with interviews, callers, wrap ups, and discussions of all the action. Schedules subject to change.

  • English leads Hamilton Golf Academy players at PGA Championship

    Jimmy Walker took the first round lead Thursday by firing a five under par 65 at The 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Walker holds a one shot lead over Emiliano Grillo, Ross Fisher, and Martin Kaymer as golf's final major championship of the year completes its opening round. Four current players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club's Scott Hamilton Golf Academy are in the field, with Harris English only two shots back after an opening round 67. Russell Henley is tied for ninth with a 2-under par 68. Aaron Baddeley shot even par and is tied for 36th, while Chris Kirk will have some work to do Friday following a 4-over 74. Two former SHGA players, Acworth's Jason Bohn and Kevin Kisner, each shot 1-over par 71s on Thursday and are tied for 55th. The 70 low scores and ties will make the 36-hole cut following Friday's second round.   • Cartersville Little League 10U falls to Virginia in Tournament of State Champions semifinals

    The Cartersville Little League 10U team lost Tuesday morning to Loudoun South American Little League of Loudon County, Virginia in the semifinal round of the Southeast Region Tournament of State Champions being held in Greenville, North Carolina. The 24-10 loss eliminated the Georgia state champions and ended their tremendous tournament run this summer. The Canes were district and state champions and were one of only four teams to qualify for the single elimination playoffs at the Tournament of State Champions. Cartersville 10U went 5-1 to win the Georgia title and finished 2-2 at the 10U Tournament of State Champions. The two teams that defeated Cartersville at the TOSC will play for the tournament championship Wednesday at 11am at Elm Street Park in Greenville. Loudon South American Little League will meet Northwood Little League of Taylors, South Carolina in the finals. Northwood edged Plant City, Florida in the other semifinal on Tuesday, 2-1. Loudon South, the Virginia state champions, scored four runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday to take a lead on Cartersville they would not yield. Cartersville responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-3, but Loudon South added a run in the second inning and four more in the third inning to extend their advantage to 9-3. Cartersville again narrowed the margin to 10-7 after four innings, but Virginia exploded for 14 runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Loudon South’s huge inning came on 11 hits that included a pair of double and a three-run homer. There were also four walks and three Canes’ errors in the frame. For Cartersville, Connor Brasfield blasted a pair of homeruns — one in the first inning and another in third inning. Miles Owen also hit a first inning homerun. Four Canes had two hits, including Brasfield (4 RBI) and Owen (2 RBI). Hayden James and Gavin Shrewsbury also had a pair of hits. Caleb Daniel (RBI), Ayden Ray (RBI), and Joseph Womack contributed one hit each. Shrewsbury was the Cartersville starting pitcher and was saddled with the pitching loss. Womack, Brasfield, and Easton Elrod pitched in relief.
