CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 62, PAULDING COUNTY 37 The Cartersville girls basketball team utilized a 22-point second quarter to separate themselves from the visiting Lady Patriots of Paulding County Wednesday night at the Storm Center on their way to a 62-37 victory. Cartersville led 12-7 after one quarter, but extended their lead to 34-14 at halftime with the big second quarter. The Lady Canes led 46-25 after three periods. The trio of DeAsia Jefferson, Madison McKinney, and India Reid led Cartersville with 10 points each. Reid added nine rebounds and Jefferson collected five boards. Monica Motuba contributed nine points to the Cartersville offense. Camilla Rodriguez followed with eight points and six rebounds. Addie Smith finished with six points; Caroline Bagwell four; Chloe Davis three; and London Shaw two for the Lady Canes. Kasie Brewer led Paulding with 22 points. She was followed by teammates Kimberlynn Black and Kemoni Watson with 11 and four points, respectively. The Lady Patriots fell to 2-11 with the loss. Cartersville improved to 4-3. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 69, PAULDING CO. 52 T.J. Horton scored 24 points and Jaylon Pugh added 23 as the Purple Hurricanes completed a season sweep of Paulding County Wednesday night at the Storm Center. Horton added seven rebounds and three assists. Pugh had three steals. Perignon Dyer scored nine points for Cartersville. Cartersville led 32-20 at halftime and 50-39 after three quarters. With the loss, Paulding County slips to 2-10 on the year. Cartersville (5-1) hosts Woodland Thursday with the girls’ game scheduled to tip at 6pm and the boys’ game to follow. The game will be celebrated as Alumni Night for the Purple Hurricanes. Both the Lady Canes and Canes will face Cass December 28 in the opening round of the Chattooga Christmas Tournament in Summerville. Those games are scheduled back-to-back with the girls’ game set to tip at 4pm.

ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 57, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 49 The Adairsville Tigers used a strong fourth quarter Tuesday night to power past Southeast Whitfield 57-49 in a non-region game in Dalton. It was Adairsville's third straight win and the Tigers' fifth in six games. The host Raiders led Tuesday night for three quarters, but the Tigers won the battle of the final eight minutes 22-9 to take the come-from-behind win. Southeast Whitfield led 12-9 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime, before taking a 40-35 lead to the final period. Cody Henderson scored a game-high 21 points to lead Adairsville. James Sims also reached double figures with 10 points. Ethan Belcher scored nine; Hunter Hice eight; Grayson Dailey and Ronald Hardin four each; and Cole Hewett added one. Luke Johns led the Raiders (4-6) with 17 points. Keaton McCutchen added 10. Adairsville (7-4) is scheduled to play in the Fannin County High School Mountain Top Tournament December 27-29. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 57, ADAIRSVILLE 36 The Lady Tigers hung in the game at Southeast Whitfield for three quarters Tuesday night, but were outscored 18-1 in the fourth quarter of a 57-36 loss. Maddie Pearson scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Raiders to their win. Adairsville trailed 16-14, 26-22, and 39-35 at the end of the first three quarters. Nakiyah Washington scored 11 points; Josie Summerville 10, and Zay Harris six for the Lady Tigers. Southeast Whitfield improved to 8-2 with their victory. Adairsville (4-6) plays December 28 in the Haralson County Holiday Tournament where they will face Rockmart.

The Adairsville boys basketball team defeated Gordon Central Monday night in Calhoun, 55-46. The Tigers ran out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Adairsville held leads of 36-21 at halftime and 43-31 after three quarters. Ethan Belcher led Adairsville with 12 points. Hunter Hice scored 10. James Sims and Juan Perez each added eight points. Cole Hewett finished with six. Ronald Hardin and Grayson Dailey rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with six and five points, respectively. DaNarian Dixon led Gordon Central with 14 points. Gabe Ross added 11 and Dawson Lackey nine for the Warriors. Drake Bray contributed six points. Colyn Nix and Martavius Harris scored three points each. The Woodland Wildcats placed second and the Cass Colonels ninth at the prestigious McCallie Invitational Tournament in Chattanooga Saturday. The Cartersville basketball teams made it a clean sweep Saturday night at Paulding County in non-region games, while the Cass boys' team also won a non-region matchup on the road. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 97, PAULDING COUNTY 86 The Cartersville boys basketball team added several members to their roster from the football team and added another road victory Saturday evening at Paulding County, 97-86. Jaylon Pugh led four Canes in double figures with 33 points. Perignon Dyer scored 19, T.J. Horton 12, and Avery Showell 11 for Cartersville who improved to 4-1 overall. Pugh and Horton also finished with double-doubles. Pugh snagged 10 rebounds and Horton dished 10 assists. Paulding County slipped to 2-8 on the season. Cartersville is scheduled to host Paulding County Wednesday and Woodland Thursday with boys’ game tip times set for 7:30pm. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 60, PAULDING COUNTY 23 Led by Madison McKinney’s 20 points, the Lady Canes won big at Paulding County Saturday. Cartersville held a slim 9-7 lead after one quarter, but distanced themselves easily over the final three periods including a 30-16 halftime lead. Monica Motuba scored nine points for the Lady Canes. Kimora McClinic added seven. The Lady Patriots fell to 2-9 on the year. Cartersville (3-3) returns to the hardwoods Wednesday in a home rematch with Paulding County at 6pm and will host Woodland on Thursday at 6pm. CASS BOYS 66, WEST HALL 34 The Colonels bounced back from their loss Friday night by running out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter on their way to a 32-point win over West Hall Saturday at the Spartan Shootout in Oakwood. Cass utilized a balanced scoring attack led by Ashton Burley with 13 points and C.J. Bennett with 10. Mark Chester and Ian Whittington scored nine points each. Steven Spell totaled eight points and Carter Hedden seven. Jake Collum added four points an dJacquez Milles three. West Hall (2-6) was led by Xzavier Reid with 12 points and Noah Edmondson added five for the Spartans. The Colonels (7-3) will play December 28-30 at the Chattooga Christmas Tournament in Summerville and will face Cartersville in the opening round. MODEL BOYS 45, WOODLAND 32 The Wildcats held a one point lead going to the fourth quarter Saturday in the opening round of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival, but the Blue Devils outscored Woodland 22-8 over the final eight minutes for a 13-point win. Model led 13-11 at halftime. Justice Hayes led Woodland with nine points. Trevor Knowles scored eight and Justice Carter six. Woodland (1-6) plays a consolation game Monday at Georgia Highlands College in Rome against Coosa. The Eagles lost Saturday to Darlington, 56-33. MODEL GIRLS 65, WOODLAND 16 The Woodland girls lost their opening round game at the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival Saturday to Model, 65-16, at Berry College. Model improved to 6-2 with their win and moved into the tournament semifinals. Woodland (0-7) is scheduled for a tournament consolation game Monday at 4pm at Georgia Highlands College and will face Coosa. The Lady Eagles lost Saturday to Darlington, 54-30.

The Adairsville Tigers’ basketball team led throughout Friday night in a road 62-45 win at Bremen. Peter Marcuz scored 13 for Bremen. Jason Houston and Charlie Crafton added seven and five, respectively, for the Devils. Bremen falls to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in Region 6-AAA with the loss. The Tigers were led in scoring by Cody Henderson with 13 points. Hunter Hice followed with 12 and Grayson Dailey 11. Ronald Hardin finished with nine points. Juan Perez and James Sims totaled six points each. Ethan Belcher contributed four points. Trevis Williams and Denzel Pitt added one point each. Bremen battled back in the third quarter to narrow the Lady Tigers’ lead to three, but Adairsville held on for an 11-point decision. Nakiyah Washington scored a game-high 22 points to lead Adairsville. Josie Summerville scored 17 points and Emily Collum 14 for the Lady Tigers. DACULA BOYS 74, CASS 63 Cass led 18-15 after one quarter, but failed to keep pace with the Falcons over the final three periods Friday night in both teams’ opener at the West Hall Spartan Shootout. C.J. Bennett scored 19, Jake Collum 17, and Ashton Burley 12 for the Colonels in their 74-63 loss. Dacula improved to 6-2 with the win. Cass (6-3) plays the host team, West Hall, on Saturday.

Jana Morning's 17 points led the Cass Lady Colonels to a road win over Walton Friday night and the Excel Lady Eagles went to the wire at North Cobb Christian School. CASS GIRLS 57, WALTON 38 The Lady Colonels took control of their game at Walton Friday night with a strong third quarter and held on for a 19-point road victory. Cass led 15-14 after one quarter and 32-20 at halftime. The Lady Colonels extended their advantage to 49-31 after three periods. Jana Morning (photo) led Cass with 17 points. She was followed by Chanel Clemmons with nine and Lyric Curtis, Esmeralda Thomas, and Payton Stoddard with eight points each. Kyla Michienzi chipped in with four points. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN GIRLS 40, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 39 The Excel girls basketball team held leads of 6-4, 17-16, and 30-28 at the end of the first three periods, but struggled to only post nine points in the final period in a one-point loss at North Cobb Christian Friday night. Both teams struggled at the charity stripe in the final period. North Cobb Christian made only one of six free throws in the fourth quarter and Excel converted only five of eleven. Gabby Mills and Mary Claire Norman led North Cobb Christian with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Excel was led by Whitney Harris (photo) and Kalli Beth Scheff with 11 and 10 points. The Adairsville High School swim team defeated visiting Coahulla Creek and Pickens Wednesday in a tri-meet held at the Adairsville High School Swim Center. The Adairsville teams combined for a 218 point total, followed by Coahulla Creek with 183 points and Pickens with 71. The Lady Tigers finished with 134 points and finished ahead of Coahulla Creek (90) and Pickens (45). The Tigers (84 points) were second on the boys' side of the ledger, nine points behind Coahulla Creek (93) but well ahead of Pickens (26). According to the Clemson University website, tigernet.com, and based on comments on his own Twitter account, Trevor Lawrence has committed to Clemson over his other finalist Georgia on Thursday night. “After a long and thoughtful process, I’m blessed to announce that I am committed to Clemson University,” Lawrence tweeted. #ALLIN [Tiger emoji] The decision comes just five days after he led the Canes to their second consecutive Class 4A state championship and three days after he was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Georgia. Lawrence (6-6, 201) had previously narrowed his choices to Georgia and Clemson back in July. Lawrence is the No. 1 rated player in the Class of 2018 by three different recruiting services and is the highest ranked commit with Clemson in history. He passed for 3,708 yards and 49 touchdowns this past season as a junior for the Purple Hurricanes. As a sophomore, Lawrence was 233-of-364 for 3,655 yards and 43 TDs. His freshman season, he passed for 3,042 yards and 26 TDs, and he totaled 1,173 yards passing and 18 TDs in the 8th grade. This season, Lawrence passed current Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson for the third-most touchdown passes in a single season in the state of Georgia. He is now seventh on the single-season passing yards leader list with 3,904. Lawrence has 10,361 career passing yards, just 2,114 behind Jake Fromm for second all-time and 2,881 behind Watson's career mark for the most all-time in Georgia. He drew interest and national offers from Alabama, California, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado State, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Houston, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and more. Coaches are attracted to Lawrence for his prototypical quarterback frame, arm strength, throwing accuracy, and athleticism. Lawrence last visited Clemson on October 1 for the Tigers' game against Louisville. He joins another top 2018 recruit, Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy linebacker Mike Jones, on Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's Tigers. He had originally stated his decision would be revealed last August, but made the commitment on the evening of his high school team's state championship celebration parade through downtown Cartersville. Lawrence’s Twitter account received responses Thursday night from many, including current Atlanta Falcons’ star Vic Beasley, Jr., who played his high school football in Bartow County at Adairsville and was an All-American at Clemson. He also received a message from former Cartersville teammate Miller Forristall who now plays for the Alabama Crimson Tide and numerous other teammates.
