The top-ranked Woodland girls cross country team won the 2016 Class AAAAA State Championship with a 28-point victory over runner-up Starr’s Mill. The Lady Cats finished with 81 points and had all five scoring runners to finish in the top 37 places. Starr’s Mill finished second with 109 team points. McIntosh (132), Flowery Branch (151), and Grady (161) rounded out the top five teams. There were 27 teams and 195 individual runners in the Class 5A girls championship race. Erin Leonard of Jones County won the individual title in 19:17. Woodland’s Carli Clymer led the Lady Cats’ runners with a fifth place individual finish in 20:09. Sam Ellis of Decatur won the Class 5A boys individual title with a time of 16:38. There were 214 runners in the championship race. CARTERSVILLE 68, TROUP 0 The top-ranked Purple Hurricanes clinched a school record fifth straight region championship Friday night by overwhelming visiting Troup, 68-0. Cartersville improved its state-best winning streak to 25 consecutive games and will head into the playoffs as a No. 1 seed at 10-0. Cartersville posted 56 first half points with 28 coming in each of the first two quarters. Trey Creamer (photo) scored six touchdowns (five rushing and one receiving) to lead the Canes. Trevor Lowe returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown and Bradley Kirk returned an interception for a Canes’ score in the second half along with a touchdown run by Dominique Williams. Georgia Player of the Year candidate and Canes’ quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, was 14-for-19 for 208 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 36 yards. Cartersville will host Chestatee next week at Weinman Stadium to open defense of the Class AAAA state title. NORTH MURRAY 28, ADAIRSVILLE 21 The Adairsville Tigers season came to a close Friday night with a 7-point home loss to North Murray in a Region 6-AAA playoff game. A win by Adairsville would have put the Tigers in the state playoffs for a school-record sixth straight season. The Tigers traded leads with North Murray in the second half, but the visiting Mountaineers ultimately scored the game winning touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. Both teams opened the game with touchdown drives on their first possessions. Adairsville went up 7-0 on a 10 play, 72-yard drive that culminated with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Roger Redd to Ethan Belcher. North Murray answered with a 75-yard, 12 play drive of their own. Tailback Brady Harper punched in a two-yard run to tie the game, 7-7. The Mountaineers took a 14-7 lead to the intermission, following a short sneak for touchdown by sophomore quarterback, Preston Poag, Jr. Adairsville took a 21-14 lead with a pair of scores in the third quarter. Tigers’ sophomore running back, Mason Boswell capped a 48-yard drive with a five yard run to tie the score at 14-all and Travon Branch made a leaping grab over a defender in the end zone to collect a 35-yard touchdown pass from Redd that gave Adairsville the lead. Poag raced for an 80-yard touchdown run on North Murray’s next play from scrimmage to knot the score at 21-all with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter. North Murray scored the ultimate game winning touchdown on a 48-yard scamper by Harper on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the Tigers had a potential game-tying score negated. The Mountaineers drove to the one yard line and had fourth-and-goal leading 28-21. Poag kept the ball and tried to sneak it in to put the game away, but it popped loose into the end zone. Devon Isaac of the Tigers scooped it up and with a convoy of blockers returned the ball 100 yards for an apparent Adairsville touchdown. After the officials huddled and a lengthy discussion, it was determined that there was a fumble on the play recovered by the Tigers. They also ruled, however, that there was an inadvertant whistle that stopped the play at the point of the fumble recovery and Adairsville was awarded possession at their own 1-yard line. A pair of late drive attempts by the Tigers came up short and Adairsville’s final offensive play came with less than one minute remaining when a Redd pass tipped off Belcher’s hands on a fourth down play. North Murray (7-3) earned the school’s first-ever state playoff berth. The Mountaineers will host Jackson County next Friday. Adairsville’s season ends with a 3-7 mark. ROME 56, WOODLAND 6 Rome rushed for 357 yards and finished with 454 total yards in a 56-6 rout of Woodland. The victory secured the Wolves first region title since 2006. Rome (8-2, 7-1 in 7-AAAAA) scored 42 points in the first half on their way to a runaway win. The Wolves finished in a three-way tie for the region title with Carrollton and Kell, but held a point differential in the games between those teams. Rome will host Miller Grove to open the Class AAAAA state playoffs next week. Woodland’s lone score came on a Seth Johnson 67-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Knowles in the fourth quarter. Woodland finished the year 0-10. CARROLLTON 45, CASS 14 Carrollton scored 31 first half points before the Colonels got on the board with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brett Gaddy to Devin Pritchett that made the score 31-7 at halftime. After the Trojans took a 45-7 lead, Cass’ Rett Moore connected with Tavares Varnum for a 36-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter. Carrollton finished in a three-way tie for the Region 7-AAAAA championship, but will finish second and be a No. 2 seed in the Class AAAAA state playoffs next week on a point differential tie-breaker among the tied teams. Rome won the title and Kell finished third. Carrollton (9-1, 7-1) will host Lithonia in the first round of the state playoff next Friday night. Cass finished the 2016 season with a 3-7 mark.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes pounded Troup 68-0 Friday to win the Region 5-AAAA championship and advance to the Class AAAA state playoffs as a No. 1 seed. Below is the bracket for the state playoffs that begin Friday, November 11.

Coaxum is a three-year starter on the Purple Hurricanes’ defense and is the son of David Coaxum and Liswandra Davis. The senior strong safety has been recognized as the Canes’ Defensive Back of the Week 17 time during his career. He led all Cartersville defensive backs in tackles during the 2015, undefeated state championship season and he leads them again this season by a wide margin. The Elite Athlete of the Week for Excel Christian Academy is Whitney Harris. The daughter of Eric Harris and the granddaughter of Tommy and Patsy Harris, Whitney is a junior who has attended Excel since the fourth grade. A multi-sport athlete, Harris is a three-year starter at third base and shortstop for the Lady Eagles’ softball team. She is a three-year starter at guard on the basketball team and is on the varsity tennis team in the spring. Coach Adcock and Coach Baker nominated Whitney because of her outstanding work ethic, the positive attitude she exhibits every day, and the leadership qualities she brings to any endeavor undertaken. Harris is an excellent student and has been an honor roll student throughout her high school career. Her teachers praise her for her work ethic and high level performance in the classroom. She has many leadership roles at Excel and is a positive influence in the school. She is the Junior Class Vice President, an officer with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and is on the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Harris attends Grace First Baptist Church and is an active participant in youth ministries. She also gives back to the community as a participant in Splash Bartow for the past three years. Her future plans include attending college and majoring in cosmetology. Ant Lester is the Elite Athlete of the Week representing Woodland High School. Lester is a sophomore running back and outside linebacker for the Wildcats’ football team. Lester was credited with setting the tone for the Wildcats’ offense last week with his tough, physical running style and he continues to be part of Woodland’s recent success in the running game. He finished the game at Kell with 58 rushing yards and three tackles on defense. The Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Week is Demarco Moore. Moore is a junior defensive back that has worked his way into a starting role at corner back for the Colonels. He has continued to develop and grow in his knowledge and understanding of the secondary and has a bright future. Moore’s physical play in last week’s game at Villa Rica jumped off the game film. He has one interception this season and is always active and around the football. He is the son of Garland Moore and Shederricka Brazil. The Elite Athlete of the Week for Adairsville High School is Roger Redd. The son of Roger and Sonja Redd, the senior quarterback is in his second season as the signal caller for the Tigers’ offense. He was 13-of-24 for 276 yards and four touchdowns last week in Adairsville’s 42-10 victory over Haralson County. He also rushed for a four-yard touchdown as the Tigers secured a spot in the region playoffs this week. Redd also excels in the classroom where he maintains a 3.95 grade point average. LakePoint Sports in Emerson will host its first annual LakePoint Basketball Showcase presented by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The one-day, five-game event will be played in the new Champions Center at LakePoint on Saturday, December 10. There will be one girls game and four boys games with teams from Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The Showcase will kick off at 1 pm with the No. 1 rated girls basketball player in the nation, Olivia Nelson- Ododa, and Winder-Barrow as they take on The Lovett School. Following the girls match-up, the boys will take over as two Georgia teams, Hillgrove and Warner Robins, face off at 2:30. The third game of the day will feature Cartersville High School and Meadowcreek. Returning four starters from last season's region championship team, Cartersville will look to use their experience against a relatively young Meadowcreek team. The 5:30 game will feature a pair of out-of-state teams in Chattanooga (TN) McCallie and Charlotte (NC) Providence Day. Providence Day boasts one of the top guards in the nation, Devon Dotson, while McCallie will look to continue their success coming off a 25-win season. The final game of the night will pit two Georgia teams, North Cobb Christian and Sandy Creek against each other to conclude an action-packed day. Both teams are coming off 20+ win seasons a year ago, making for an exciting match-up to close out the first annual LakePoint Basketball Showcase presented by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Adairsville’s Vic Beasley, Jr. added another sack Sunday in the Atlanta Falcons’ 33-32 win over Green Bay. The second-year pro and Clemson All-American, is currently tied for third in the NFL with 7.5 sacks totalling -46 yards. Linebackers Lorenzo Alexander (9 sacks) of the Buffalo Bills and Von Miller (8.5 sacks) of the Denver Broncos lead the league. At the collegiate level, Tyler Reed had his best game of the year with a seven tackle performance for Austin Peay while Cody West and the Duquesne University men’s soccer team continued their string of outstanding defensive performances. PRO FOOTBALL VIC BEASLEY, JR. — Atlanta Falcons (2nd yr. pro; Clemson University; Adairsville HS). . . Beasley finished the Atlanta Falcons’ 33-32 win over Green Bay with three tackles that included a second quarter sack of Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Beasley now has 23 total tackles and 7.5 sacks on the year. He has also forced three fumbles, one pass defended, and seven quarterback hurries. The Falcons improved to 5-3 with the win and snapped a two game losing skid after a 4-1 start. Atlanta, who leads the NFC South by 1.5 games, has a quick turnaround this week. West has played most of his team’s minutes and has been an integral part of Duquesne’s defense that has recorded nine shutouts this season in 16 games. Cartersville Country Club won the Georgia State Golf Association Team Championship at 22-under-par 338 and a second team from Cartersville Country Club finished tied for fourth. St. Ives Country Club earned runner-up honors at 9-under-par 351. Athens Country Club placed third at 352 and Atlanta Athletic Club was tied with Cartersville’s second team for fourth. The winning foursome was made up of Chad Branton, Justin Johnson, Cameron Hooper and Kyle Hosick. (photo right) Hosick recorded a 65 in the final round to lead the charge for Cartersville Country Club's victory. Branton fired a 68 and Hooper finished with a 72. Three of each team's four individual scores counted on Sunday. The win also marks the club's fourth title in six years as Cartersville CC won in 2011, 2012 and 2014. St. Ives Country Club, winners of the Georgia Team Championship last year, finished as runner-up this year. The Cartersville Country Club #2 team, comprised of Chase Jones, Greg Johnson, Cres Dodd, Bill Faith, tied for fourth at 7-under-par 353. The field of 30 club teams played one round of four-ball stroke play and one round with best three of four individuals stroke play. The 24th edition of this event took place Saturday and Sunday, October 29-30.

The Adairsville High School One Act Play cast and crew hosted and won the Region 6-AAA championship this past week. The play, “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” is directed by Rachel Queen. The assistant director is Kathleen Landolt. Adairsville’s Ashley Peterson was named Best Actress at the eight school competition. Shannon Adams and Rylan Abernathy were named All Star Cast Members. ADAIRSVILLE 42, HARALSON COUNTY 10 A 78-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Adairsville's Daylon Bailey with 5:11 remaining in the second quarter sparked a run of 35-unanswered points by the Tigers as they cruised past visiting Haralson County, 42-10. The victory places Adairsville in a region playoff game next Friday at home against North Murray with the winner advancing to the Class AAA state playoffs. The Tigers went up 21-3 at halftime with a flurry of scores late in the half. Roger Redd (photo) hit Bryce Burgess with a nine-yard scoring pass that capped a 91 yard drive with 1:10 remaining in the half. Adairsville linebacker Nick Johnson then picked off a pass with 0:36 left in the half to set up a 39 yard touchdown pass from Redd to Ethan Belcher with 0:21 remaining in second quarter. The Tigers scored three more times in the third quarter. Redd connected with Travon Branch (photo) on a 16-yard scoring pass and a 56-yard touchdown strike to go ahead 35-3. The Rebels scored their only touchdown on a deflected pass from quarterback Nick Vaughn to Trace Spradlin that narrowed the score to 35-10. The pass hit the hands of a different receiver and deflected five yards down the field into the hands of Spradlin who ran it the rest of the way. Redd added one more Adairsville touchdown on a four-yard run with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter that made the final, 42-10. Christian Steele carried 12 times for 120 yards for the Tigers. Mason Boswell added 51 yards on eight rushes. Redd was 12-of-23 for 260 yards and four touchdowns. He had one interception. Haralson fell to 2-7 overall and finished 0-4 in Region 6-AAA South. Adairsville (3-6) will host North Murray (6-3) next Friday. VILLA RICA 23, CASS 17 Villa Rica took a 17-0 lead on a Dawson Buchanan 33-yard field goal, an Elijah Fluker one-yard touchdown run, and a 33-yard pass from quarterback Kelvin Shackleford to Xavier Hill with 6:00 remaining in the first half. Colonels' place kicker, Anthony Robledo, converted on a 22-yard field goal with 0:16 remaining in the first half to make the score 17-3 at halftime. Cass sophomore running back, Thomas Gilliam, scored on a 12-yard run that narrowed Villa Rica's lead to 17-10 with 8:57 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats went up 23-10 on a 17 yard run by Fluker and Cass quarterback, Brett Gaddy (photo) tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to Devin Pritchett with 0:56 remaining for the 23-17 final. Villa Rica improved to 5-5 with their win. Cass slipped to 3-6. The Colonels travel to Carrollton (8-1) next Friday to conclude their season. KELL 42, WOODLAND 14 Kell went up 14-0 on touchdown runs by John Lampley and Josiah Futral. Quarterback John Lampley then tossed touchdown passes to Logan Flesher and Michael Lucky, followed by a 62-yard touchdown run by Dre Houston that gave the Longhorns a 35-0 lead at the intermission. Woodland scored its 14 points quickly in the third quarter when quarterback Brody Williams scored on a 1-yard dive to cap an eight-play, 57-yard drive. On the next play from scrimmage, linebacker Emmanuel Jones intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Patrick Flesher and returned it 42 yards to the end zone. Victor Glover made the final 42-14 with a fourth quarter touchdown run. Lampley ran only once for six yards and threw only five passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Futral carried six times for 47 yards. Kell improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (0-9, 0-7) will host Rome next Friday.

Three players from both Cartersville High School and Cass High School competed recently in Perfect Game’s World Wood Bat Association Championship in Jupiter, Florida. Cass players, Jake Collum, Cody Johnson, and Bailey Campbell competed with Nelson Baseball School 18U. Cartersville players, J.P. Martin and Mason Barnett, played with Georgia PG Texas Orange. Devin Warner played third base for the East Cobb Yankees. Each of the teams faired well at one of Perfect Game’s premier events. Georgia PG Texas Orange went 4-1 and made the playoff round of 32. The East Cobb Yankees finished 2-1-1 and Nelson Baseball School finished 2-2. Individual results: Mason Barnett (Cartersville HS) — pitched four innings in a pair of relief appearances; allowed three runs on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Bailey Campbell (Cass HS, Young Harris commit) — collected a double and a triple in 12 at bats with two RBIs and a run scored with a walk. Jake Collum (Cass HS, Georgia State commit) — threw three shutout innings in two appearances, allowing no hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Named to all-tournament team. Cody Johnson (Cass HS) — pitched three innings in a start, earning a win after allowing one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Names to all-tournament team. J.P. Martin (Cartersville HS) — finished 1-for-5 with a walk, a hit by pitch, an RBI and two runs scored. He started three games at catcher including his team’s playoff game. Devin Warner (Cartersville HS, Auburn commit) — collected a double, scored two runs and drew three walks in nine at bats. He also turned two double plays and posted a .933 fielding percentage.

The Cartersville Middle School football team wrapped up a perfect, unbeaten season and won the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association championship Thursday at Weinman Stadium with a come-from-behind 19-14 victory over Calhoun. The CMS Canes finished their 2016 work in the BGMSAA with a 9-0 record. Calhoun finished 7-2 with their only losses coming to Cartersville. Cartersville won the regular season meeting, 25-14, in mid-September. Cartersville, behind quarterback Evan Slocum and running back Quante Jennings sprinted to an early 13-0 lead, but Calhoun would rally with a second quarter touchdown and a lengthy third quarter drive to go up 14-13. After falling behind, Cartersville’s Sam Phillips returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield to set up the Canes go-ahead drive. Slocum and Jennings did the bulk of the work with Jennings scoring on a one-yard burst with 5:38 remaining. A two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Canes had regained a 19-14 lead. Calhoun threatened once more with a drive into Cartersville territory, but Jennings came up with a sack of Calhoun’s quarterback on a fourth down play inside the Canes’ 30-yard line with 1:37 to thwart the Jackets comeback attempt. Cartersville was able to run out the clock from there to claim the BGMSAA title. Slocum had a 7 yard run early and added another short touchdown run in the second period as the Canes took an early 13-0 lead. Calhoun scored on an interesting play to get on the board in the second quarter. After the Yellow Jackets running back picked up a first down, he lateraled to a teammate before hitting the turf. The lateral was then taken an additional 30 yards for a Calhoun score. In the third quarter, Calhoun used up much of the period with a long drive to take a 14-13 edge. It was the first deficit of any kind for Cartersville this season. Cartersville, under first year head coach Brett Tolbert, completed back-to-back unbeaten seasons with BGMSAA titles. The Canes had playoff wins over Adairsville (43-0) and Red Bud (49-7) to reach the championship game. Calhoun reached the championship game with playoff wins over Woodland 29-0 and Cass, 13-6.
