  • Early runs edge Adairsville

    Ringgold pitcher Devin Lancaster tossed a complete game, three-hitter, and Ringgold’s offense scored three runs early to defeat Adairsville Tuesday night, 3-1, in a Region 6-AAA battle of two different Tigers teams at Adairsville. Ringgold (9-4 overall, 4-0 in 6-AAA) took a 3-0 lead after two innings and Lancaster’s pitching performance made the lead stand up, allowing only one, sixth inning run while striking out a dozen and allowing no walks. Tyler Nichols hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give Ringgold a 2-0 lead. Andre Tarver singled and later scored after an infield error and a passed ball to make the score 3-0. Adairsville also received outstanding pitching from Kyler Pelfrey and Noah O’Kelley. Pelfrey (5 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss. O’Kelley (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 4K) worked two scoreless innings. Lane Griffith’s RBI double in the sixth inning drove home Landon Howren for Adairsville’s run. Sam Seaman had Adairsville’s only other hit. It was a double in the second inning. Adairsville (6-5, 3-2) will face Hamburg High School (Hamburg, NY) Thursday at 6:30pm at LakePoint in Emerson and makes the short trip to Gordon Central Friday for a 5:55pm start.

  • Lady Tigers hold off Calhoun, remain atop region

    The Adairsville girls soccer team defeated Calhoun Tuesday night, 2-1, to remain unbeaten on the 2016 campaign. The Lady Tigers got two goals from Kaitlyn Webster. Haley Pittman assisted the first goal in the 20th minute. The ultimate game-winner came unassisted in the 45th minute to give Adairsville a 2-0 lead just after halftime. Calhoun scored in the 63rd minute, but the Lady Tigers’ defense and keeper Havyn Isaac made the plays down the stretch to hold on for the important region win.   • Excel shutout by Pinecrest

    Visiting Pinecrest Academy pounded out 19 hits to defeat Excel Christian Academy 12-0 in six innings Tuesday night at LakePoint in Emerson. Ben Gobbel, Will Patota, Matt Walters, and Matt Howell combined for 10 hits and five RBI to lead the Paladins. Pinecrest Academy (3-9 overall, 3-5 in Region 6-A) scored seven runs in the top of the second on eight hits and an Eagles’ infield error to take control of the game. Paladins’ starting pitcher Jake Mangan scattered three hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings to earn the win on the mound. Ryan McCarthy closed out the game for Pinecrest Academy with a scoreless sixth. Marco Haro singled in the second and fourth innings for the Eagles. Blaine Belisario had the only other Excel hit, a second inning single. Eagles’ starting pitcher, Joseph Cuomo, suffered the pitching loss. Levi Blackwell and Wyatt Karlovich worked in relief for ECA. Excel (1-10, 0-10) entertains Mount Pisgah Christian Thursday at LakePoint in Emerson.

  • Colonels golf second in tri-match at Cedartown

    The Cass boys golf team finished five shots behind Cedartown, but defeated Pepperell in a golf tri-match Tuesday afternoon at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Cedartown. The Bulldogs fired a team total of 181 to win the match. The Colonels were second at 186 and Pepperell shot 212. Cass freshman Joel Shepherd was low medalist with a 41 in the nine-hole event. The Colonels play again Monday (March 28) at Cartersville Country Club where they will face Allatoona and Cartersville.

  • Lady Cats collect win at Dalton

    The Woodland girls soccer team picked up a Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A road victory Tuesday evening at Harmon Field in Dalton, 6-1. The victory avenged an overtime loss to the Lady Catamounts one season ago. Dalton (2-5-1 overall, 1-5 in 7-AAAAA-A) scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute on a crossing shot to the left side, but Woodland roared back with six unanswered goals and keeper Sam Simmons and the defense in front of her recorded a shutout the rest of the way. Lindsay Scifers, coming off an injury suffered against Sequoyah, scored to tie the game 1-1 in the 31st minute off a corner kick from Keri Cagle. Kaitlin Winnenberg found the net in the final minute of the first half to give the Lady Cats a 2-1 lead at the intermission. Cagle scored to open the second half on a pass from Amy Moreno in the 45th minute. Freshman Molly Plott scored the first goal of her high school career unassisted in the 64th minute. Winnenberg scored her second goal of the night unassisted with 16:20 remaining, and Allie Moates rounded out Woodland’s scoring with a header goal off a nice pass from Winnenberg in the game’s 72nd minute. The Lady Cats improved to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in 7-AAAAA-A with the road win. The Woodland boys (0-9, 0-5) fell to Dalton in the nightcap, 10-0. The Catamounts remained unbeaten in region play. Woodland plays non-region matches at Coosa Friday evening.

  • Canes open region play with win at Gilmer

    A six-run fifth inning propelled the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes to an 8-1 Region 7-AAAA win over Gilmer in Ellijay Tuesday night. It was the region opener for both teams. The Canes scored their fifth inning runs on an error, a three-run triple by Zach Yancey, an RBI double by Spencer Dickey, and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Fowler. The offensive onslaught broke open a 1-0 game and gave Cartersville a 7-0 lead at the time. The Bobcats (3-7 overall, 0-1 in 7-AAAA) scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Canes got that run back the next inning on an RBI double by Cole Jamieson. Freshman starter, Mason Barnett (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) collected his third pitching victory of the year. Yancey (1 IP, 0R, 0BB, 2K) and Dickey (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB) closed out the game in relief. Cartersville (5-6, 1-0) pounded out ten hits in the contest. Carrington Evans (RBI), Parker Tidwell, and Jamieson (RBI) had two hits each for the Canes. Elliott Anderson (RBI), Fowler (RBI), Dickey (RBI), and Yancey (3 RBI) had the other Cartersville hits. Drew Healan had two hits and one RBI for Gilmer. Noah Ralston, Avery Sirmans, and Chandler Sution had the other Bobcat hits. The Canes are scheduled to host Northwest Whitfield Wednesday (March 23) and travel to Jasper to take on Pickens on Friday (March 25). Both games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts.

    The Cartersville High School tennis teams took one step closer Monday to clinching the top seed in their region tournament. The Cartersville girls blanked Lafayette, while the boys won 4-1.   • Cass tennis teams wrap up season with wins over ECA

    The Cass High tennis teams closed out their 2016 seasons Monday at Hamilton Crossing Park with wins over visiting Excel Christian Academy. The girls team won 3-2. The boys were 5-0 winners.   • Colonels lose at Dalton

    Dalton’s eight-run second inning was enough to put visiting Cass away early Monday night in the first game of a three-game sub-region series. Dalton went on to defeat the Colonels, 14-2, in five innings. Cole Shelton (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB, 6K) was the complete game winner for the Catamounts. Cass pitcher, Austin Pruett, took the loss lasting only 1-1/3 innings. He walked two, struck out two, and allowed four runs. The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but it was three singles, a double, and five walks that led to Dalton’s second inning barrage that put the game away. Dalton added four more runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. The Colonels managed only three hits, scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings. Bailey Campbell, Steven Spell, and Casey Patterson had the Cass hits. Campbell and Jake Collum had one RBI each. J.P. Tighe, Shelton, and Sam Stepp combined for nine hits and ten RBI to lead the Catamounts’ offense. Dalton (10-2 overall, 6-1 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) visits Cass (4-8, 3-4) Wednesday for the second game in the series. The two teams play a third game Friday back in Dalton.

  • GHC softball splits DH with South Georgia

    Georgia Highlands softball split a doubleheader with South Georgia State, losing 4-0 in the opener and winning 4-2 in the second game. Rebecca Meade allowed only one earned run on six hits in a complete game effort in the opener, but was saddled with the loss. She struck out five. Meade earned a save in Game 2 in relief of Natalie Pederson. She allowed no hits and struck out two in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. Pederson picked up her first conference win of the year with her 5 and 2/3 inning effort. She scattered eight hits and yielded no earned runs. Caitlin Parks was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. Lauren Womack was 3-for-7 and scored a run. Carlee Thurmond contributed a pair of RBI and scored a run in Game 2. Bre Fickes and Mallory Jackson drove in runs. Madison Gianfala and Kaleigh Mobly scored the other Chargers’ runs. GHC is back in action Tuesday against Motlow State in a doubleheader in McMinnville, TN. First pitch is set for 1pm. The Chargers also travel to USC Salkehatchie Thursday for a doubleheader.
