  • Adairsville Middle School captures 2015 BGMSAA Academic Team title

    The Adairsville Middle School academic team made it a clean sweep Saturday at Calhoun when they won the 2015 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association academic team championship. Adairsville Middle was the BGMSAA regular season champion and followed that up with the tournament title. Adairsville had tournament victories over Calhoun Middle and Woodland Middle School to reach the finals where they defeated Cartersville Middle School. Cartersville, who was seeded sixth of eight teams following the regular season schedule, made the championship round with tournament victories Saturday over Red Bud Middle School and South Central Middle School. SOCCER STEPHANIE HICKS — Agnes Scott College (Sr., F, Woodland HS) … was a starting forward and took a pair of shots, one shot on goal, in a 3-2 victory over Wesleyan (GA) College. The Scotties are now 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in the Great South Atletic Conference. Agnes Scott will host a conference playoff game Friday. EMILY MOORE — Charleston Southern University (Jr., D, Woodland HS)… appeared in both of the Lady Bucs’ losses this past week to Coastal Carolina. The 3-0 loss Oct. 27 was the regular season finale’ and the 5-0 loss Sunday eliminated Charleston Southern from the Big South Tournament. Moore played in 16 of 18 games with five starts. She took 3 shots from her defender position with one shot on goal. CSU finished 7-9-2 on the season and 4-6 in Big South Conference play. VOLLEYBALL KARLEE WINECOFF — Point University (OH/MH, Jr., Cass HS) … played in all three sets, had two kills, two digs, and a block in a four set loss at Truett-McConnell College. The Skyhawks fell to 4-19 overall and 3-16 in the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference. Point has road matches at Tennessee Wesley Tuesday and Brewton-Parker College Thursday. KATIE O’CONNOR — Western Carolina (MB, Soph., Cartersville HS) … appeared in all five sets, accumulated 16 kills, a dig, and five blocks in a win at The Citadel. Played in all four sets of a loss at Furman where she added four kills, a dig, and a block. The Lady Catamounts have home conference matches this week against Mercer, Samford, and Chattanooga prior to the Southern Conference Tournament beginning Nov. 21. WCU is 10-19 overall and 4-9 in conference play. CROSS COUNTRY SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Fr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS) … led the Lynx to their first Southern Athletic Association Championship last weekend in Danville, KY. Fields finished in the top three with a time of 26:46 in the 8k run. He was also named SAA Newcomer of the Year. The Lynx will now advance to the NCAA Division III South Atlantic Regionals set for November 14 in Winchester, VA. ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … has been one of the top scoring runners for the Eagles all season. Here are the updates on games of Saturday, October 31: TWAN TERRELL — Cornell University (Sr., Woodland HS) … had two tackles and blocked a punt in a 47-21 loss at Princeton. Terrell now has 11 tackles on the season from his safety position and on special teams. The Big Red play at Ivy League rival Dartmouth Friday night on NBC Sports Network national TV. TARRIS BATISTE — Georgia State University (Sr., Cass HS) … a starter at safety for the Panthers, Batiste made 9 tackles Saturday in a 48-34 loss to Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. He now has 63 tackles through seven games and is second on the team in that category. He has 3.5 tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, a forced fumble, four pass break-ups, and an interception for the season. Georgia State hosts UL Lafayette Saturday at the Georgia Dome. HAYES LINN — Air Force Academy (Jr. Cartersville HS) … had a pair of tackles and broku up a pass as the Falcons defeated Hawaii 58-7 in Honolulu. Air Force improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons host Army Saturday. AUSTIN HARRELL — The Citadel (R-Jr., Adairsville HS) … defensive lineman continued to see action for the Bulldogs as they defeated Mercer 21-19 at home. The Citadel hosts Virginia Military Saturday for their homecoming game. JUSTIN FLOYD — Furman University (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … started at left guard for an offense that rolled up 426 yards of total offense in a 20-17 victory at Samford. The Paladins rushed for 252 yards as they evened their season mark at 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference. Furman plays Saturday at Western Carolina. T.L. FORD — UNC-Charlotte (Soph., Cartersville HS) … he was targeted three times and caught two passes for a total of 23 yards in a 34-10 home loss to Marshall. The 49ers fell to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in Conference USA. Charlotte plays at Florida International University in Miami on Saturday. CHAZ ROKINS — Maryville College (Soph., Cass HS) … had only one carry for 5 yards as the Scots defeated LaGrange College 38-31. He now has 261 yards on 61 rushes for the season and has played in seven of eight games scoring twice. Maryville is now 7-1 and plays at Huntingdon Saturday. DA’KELIN WELLS — Maryville College (Soph., Cass HS) … started at cornerback and had one tackle in the Scots 38-31 victory over LaGrange College. He now has 18 tackles on the season with a pair of pass break ups and one interception. Maryville plays at USA South rival Huntingdon on Saturday. QUADRE ALLEN — Tusculum College (R-Fr., Woodland HS) … saw action in three quarters of a 31-24 home loss to Mars Hill. He has four total tackles on the season. The Pioneers (4-5, 2-3) host Southern Athletic Conference rival Catawba on Saturday. BRANDON THOMPSON — Tusculum College (R-Jr., Woodland HS) … saw action in three periods of a 31-24 loss to Mars Hill. Thompson has a pair of tackles on the season. DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia Military College (Fr., Adairsville HS) … now has 17 tackles on the season and has returned a pair of fumble recoveries for scores. GMC won at fellow independent, ASA Miami, 26-13. They play their regular season finale’ Sunday, Nov. 8 in Huntington, W.Va. vs. Lackawanna. Georgia Military is 6-3 overall as a JUCO independent.   • BCRD 10U results: Colts ground Jets; Packers shutout Falcons

    Bartow County Recreation Department Youth football ​ ​ 10U results Thursday, October 29 at Hamilton Crossing Park ​ BARTOW COLTS 35 BARTOW JETS 12 The Colts jumped out to an early lead behind the rushing efforts of Kevin Henderson and never looked back as they upset the previously undefeated Jets. Henderson opened the scoring on a 3 yard run and Caleb Cooley added the conversion to give the Colts an early lead. Chris Roper answered for the Jets with a 2 yard touchdown, but the extra point failed making it 7-6. Caleb Cooley then returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown for the upstart Colts before Devin Henderson joined the scoring act by picking up a fumble and returning it 56 yards for another Colts' touchdown. Late in the first half, Cooley broke loose for a 38 yard touchdown run and a following Hunter Waits’ conversion kick, the Colts had a 27-6 advantage at the half. Cooley added a 44 yard scoring dash in the third period and, after Waits’ extra point, the Colts had extended their lead to 35-6. The Jets’ Roper scored on a 15 yard run in the fourth period for a 35-12 final score. Both teams had great seasons and finished the year with identical 8-1 records. BARTOW PACKERS 20 BARTOW FALCONS 0 The Packers played shutout defense and Jamarion Pullum scored a pair of touchdown runs as the Packers found victory Thursday night. Pullum scored on touchruns of 29 and 50 yards. Seth Abernathy tacked on another touchdown run from three yards for the Packers. Kymoni Pullum rounded out the Packers’ scoring with a conversion. Jonathan Gough and Asher Jernigan were credited with quality performances for the Falcons.   • Cartersville cross country teams earn state bids

    The Cartersville High School girls and boys cross country teams qualified for the Class AAAA state meet Thursday evening with both teams placing fourth at the Region 7-AAAA championship meet hosted by Heritage High School in Ringgold. ​ Heritage girls won the team event, followed by Pickens, Southeast Whitfield, and Cartersville. Each of those teams will advance to the state meet in Carrollton on Saturday, November 7. The Northwest Whitfield girls were fifth, followed by Gilmer and Lafayette. ​ The Lady Canes were led by senior Bree Cole who finished seventh in a time of 21:17.72. Abby Foristall ran 15th overall in 22:30.78 for Cartersville. She was followed by teammates Kayla Carpenter (21st, 23:29.89), Edith Milian (22nd, 23:30.85), Vanna Beach (23rd, 23:58.21). Victoria Martino (44th) and Krystinn Dabbs (45th) also competed for Cartersville. Heritage also won the boys race, finishing two points ahead of Gilmer. Pickens was third, but only three points ahead of Cartersville. Those four teams will advance to the state meet. Northwest Whitfield finished fifth in the boys race, followed by Southeast Whitfield, Ridgeland, and Lafayette. Freshman Haden Boone ran ninth overall for the Hurricanes in 17:55.76. He was followed by teammates Robby Earick (11th, 17:56.56), Patrick Gordon (13th, 18:11.39), Andy Sims (15th, 18:16.52), and Will Pruitt (22nd, 18:46.91). Jacob Busek finished 29th overall and William Matherne was 40th. All the GHSA State Championship cross country races will be at Carrollton High School on Saturday, November 7. The Class AAAA boys start time is scheduled for 12 noon and the Class AAAA girls race is scheduled for 12:45pm.

  • Beasley, Fluellen face challenges this week with respective NFL clubs

    After moving over to Detroit in midseason from Buffalo, former Cartersville Hurricane, Andre Fluellen, is part of a Lions’ defensive front that is battling through injuries and issues. Fluellen has remained healthy, but was brought back to Detroit to help fill some gaps in their D-line rotation. Tyrunn Walker broke his leg at the beginning of the season and was a starter. He was replaced by Gabe Wright, but Wright is a healthy scratch for this week’s game. Khyri Thornton was picked up off waivers last week, but he too is a healthy inactive along with defensive tackle Gabe Wright. Based on those personnel moves, Fluellen will remain a big part of the Lions’ front line rotation. Fluellen, in his seventh NFL season, has three tackles for the Lions in action over the past two weeks against Chicago and Minnesota. The Lions (1-6) are playing the Kansas City Chiefs this week in Wembley Stadium in London, scheduled for a 9:30am ET kickoff. Former Adairsville Tigers standout and current Atlanta Falcons’ rookie pass rusher, Vic Beasley, Jr., has recently acknowledged he needs to pick up his pass rush production. Beasley has recorded 17 tackles, 2 sacks, a forced fumble, and one pass defended over the first seven weeks. This week, Beasley will go head-to-head with Bucs’ tackles Gosder Cherilus and fellow rookie, Donovan Smith, trying to get to quarterback, Jameis Winston. The Falcons (6-1) host Tampa Bay Sunday in The Georgia Dome at 1pm.   • Tigers qualify for Class AAA state meet; Woodland's Scifers earns spot in AAAAA state meet

    The Adairsville boys cross country team qualified for the 2015 GHSA Class AAA state meet Wednesday at Coahulla Creek. The Tigers finished fourth at the Region 6AAA championship meet. Woodland's Lindsay Scifers also qualified as an individual for the Class AAAAA meet Nov. 7 in Carrollton, following her finish at the Region 7-AAAAA meet in Canton. Coahulla Creek won the 6-AAA region title, followed by Calhoun, Murray County, and Adairsville. Gordon Central, Sonoraville, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, North Murray, and Ringgold rounded out the field. Walt Douglas of Coahulla Creek won the individual race in 16:50.70. Sophomores Daniel Sullivan (19:10.50) and Jason Burdette (19:12.80) led Adairsville finishing 19th and 20th, respectively. Dylan Coker was 22nd in 19:16.20, followed by teammates Jared Tatum (25th, 19:27.30), Spencer Rawlins (29th, 19:36.80), James Leker (32nd, 19:44.60), and Ayden Johnson (48th, 21:13.10). The boys Class AAA state championship will be held at Carrollton High School, November 7 at 10:35am. The Woodland girls team finished sixth and the Cass girls were 12th at the Region 7-AAAAA championships held at Boling Park in Canton. Lindsay Scifers led the Lady Wildcats with a sixth place individual finish in 20:22.36. Teammate Cheyenne Spinks was 15th in 21:26.74. Elizabeth Roberson (32nd, 22:28.53), Casey Bolan (44th, 23:05.27), and Makenna Eskew (50th, 23:25.04) rounded out the Woodland finishers. Jana Morning led the Lady Colonels with an 11th place individual finish in 20:54.93. Esmeralda Thomas, Stephane Robledo, Miranda Degrauwe, and Lexie Wallentine rounded out the scoring for Cass. Anna Hayden of Riverwood won the girls race in 19:19.11. The Woodland boys team placed ninth and Cass was fourteenth. Julian Rocket (12th, 17:16.47), Dustin Kiel (28th, 18:04.05), and Jonathan Holloway (30th, 18:07.72) led the Wildcat harriers. Jacob Giltz (59th, 18:46.21) and Levi Brandenburg (72nd, 19:27.64) rounded the Woodland scoring. Ryan Dupree (62nd, 18:56.17) led the Colonels’ runners. He was followed by teammates Devon Martinez, Derick Smith, Michael Shaver, Tyler Smith, and NIck Poteat. Will Hasse of Forsyth Central won the Region 7-AAAAA boys race in 16:30.17.

    Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department and Bartow County Recreation Department Youth football ​ ​ 10U results Tuesday, October 27 at Dellinger Park HURRICANES BLACK 22 BARTOW FALCONS 22 The Hurricanes Black and the Bartow Falcons battled to a 22-22 tie Tuesday. Braylon Inman had touchdown runs of 88, 6, and 4 yards to lead Hurricanes Black. Avery Higgins scored on a pair of two-point extra point kicks. Kendrick Price had a 46 yard kick return and an 11 yard touchdown run for the Falcons. Asher Jernigan found the end zone on an 11 yard run and Johnathan Gough converted a pair of extra point kicks. CEDARTOWN WHITE 33 HURRICANES PURPLE 19 J.D. Davis rushed for touchdowns of 54, 25, and 45 yards to lead Cedartown. Xavier Holiday also had touchdowns for Cedartown on a 39 yard run and a pass interception return for a score. Davis, Mikey Esqirel, and Marcus Blankenship added extra point runs for Cedartown. Christian Harrison had a pair of scoring jaunts from 49 and 40 yards for Hurricanes Purple. Braden Pittman added a 6 yard pass reception for a touchdown and Paul Gamble scored on an extra point run. ​ 10U results Tuesday, October 27 at Hamilton Crossing Park BARTOW COLTS 25 BARTOW STEELERS 0 Caleb Cooley had a pair of 50 yard touchdown runs, Devin Henderson had a 55 yard rush for touchdown, and Kevin Henderson scored on a 68 yard interception return and an extra point run as the Colts shutout the Steelers. Tae Cochran led the Steelers rushing attack. BARTOW JETS 20 BARTOW PACKERS 18 Chris Roper had three touchdown runs to help lead the Jets past the Packers. Roper’s scoring runs in the first half included a 40-yard dash and a 2 yarder. He also connected with Caden Copeland for a conversion pass and Copeland ran in another PAT as the Jets took a 14-0 lead. The Packers narrowed the lead to 14-6 at the half on the first of three Jamarion Pullum touchdown runs. Pullum scampered 60 yards for a score late in the first half, then added a 40 yarder early in the second half to cut the score to 14-12. The Jets pushed their lead to 20-12 on a Roper 60 yard run, but the Packers answered on a Pullum one yard run with four minutes remaining. The Packers would get the ball back and mount one more drive, but the Jets’ defense came up with the stop to hang on for their two point win. SAVANNAH HARDIN — Young Harris College (Fr., Cass HS) … ran in the Peach Belt Conference Championship meet last Saturday in Gainesville, GA and was seventh on her team that placed fifth in the conference. Hardin was 65th overall in 26:32.7. ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished 85th last Saturday with a time of 28:00.52 in the Sand Shark Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He was second on his team which was 15th of 31 schools. VICTORIA HICKOM — Georgia Southwestern State University (Soph., Cartersville HS) … ran fourth for her team and 61st overall for the Lady Canes at the 2015 Peach Belt Conference Championship in Gainesville, GA last Saturday.   • BGMSAA academic team championship tourney is Saturday at Calhoun MS

    The 2015 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association academic team championship tournament will be Saturday at Calhoun Middle School. Following over seven weeks of regular season competitions, Adairsville Middle School heads into the league tournament as the top seed, followed in order by Ashworth, Red Bud, Cass, Woodland, Cartersville, South Central, and Calhoun. One tackle was from his safety position. The other was on punt coverage. Air Force is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. In seven games, Linn has recorded 10 tackles and 1 pass break up at free safety. He has started three times. NIAGEL CURTIS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Adairsville, GA, Gordon Central HS). . . team’s leading rusher through 8 games. The Eagles are ranked #8 in NAIA (8-0) and defeated top-ranked Lindsey Wilson (6-1) (KY) Saturday. Curtis rushed for a program-record five touchdowns and a game-high 129 yards in Saturday’s 42-24 Mid-South Conference West Division victory. Curtis now has 704 yards on 119 carries through eight games. He has scored 17 touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry. He has a long rush of 72 yards and is averaging better than 87 yards per game. He has also caught 3 passes for 40 yards. Reinhardt has a bye week, then travels to Campbellsville (KY) November 7. T.L. FORD II — UNC-Charlotte (Soph., Cartersville HS) … started at wide receiver and had 3 catches for 30 yards in a 44-10 loss to Southern Miss. His longest reception was 17 yards.
