The Woodland Wildcats track team participated in a four-way meet Tuesday night (March 8) against Darlington, Chattooga, and Mount Paran Christian. The Woodland boys placed 1st overall in the meet. The Lady Cats were second behind host Darlington. First place finishers for the Wildcats included Jamai Smith in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.83 seconds. Kevin Miller placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 38 feet 11 inches, he also placed first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.50 seconds, Julian Rockett was first in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 9 inches. Rockett also placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:03. Dustin Kiel was first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:14. Jonathan Holloway placed first in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:10, and the 4 by 400 meter relay team won the event with a time of 3:34. First place finishers for the Lady Cats included Madison Bennett in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.44 seconds. Chaila Reliford was first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.50 seconds. Karson Norris won the pole vault with a vault of 7 feet. Avery Mayweather was first in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet 4 inches. Skylar Chappell placed first in the discus with a throw of 80 feet 10 inches, and the Lady Wildcats' 4 by 100 meter relay team won with a time of 52.40. Woodland will compete in the Dalton Rotary Invitational this Saturday. (March 12)

The Cass boys tennis swept Rome on the road Thursday night, 5-0. Avery Cornett won 6-0, 6-0; Dalton Jackson won 6-1, 6-0; and Eric Dunlap won 6-1, 6-1 at the three singles positions. Jacob McBrayer and Seth Colston won at the top doubles line, 6-2, 6-3. The Colonels’ second line doubles pair of Logan Barrere and Reagan Barrere won 6-0, 6-0. The Cass girls team lost to Rome, 4-1. Ryleigh Lanham was the only victor for the Lady Colonels winning at the No. 1 singles line, 6-2, 6-0. Cass will play in the Woodland Invitational Friday and Saturday. (Mar 11-12)

Cartersville baseball trailed Montverde (FL) Academy Thursday afternoon 2-0 heading to the fifth inning, but the Purple Hurricanes responded with eight runs over the final three frames to take an 8-2 opening round win at the Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson. The nationally recognized high school baseball tournament, features several of the top ranked teams from around the country. The event continues through Saturday. Anthony Seigler pitched a complete game for Cartersville, scattering six hits. He allowed only one earned run, three walks, and struck out six batters. Seigler also got the job done at the plate. He walked twice, scored twice, and added a base hit. Noah Daniel had three hits for the Canes. Elliott Anderson and Zach Yancey both doubled and drove in two runs. Cole Jamieson had a hit and two RBI. Carrington Evans, Parker Roberson (RBI), and Trevor Lowe each added a hit. Parker Tidwell walked three times, scored a run, and contributed one RBI. Thomas Watkins scored a run. With the opening round win, Cartersville advanced to play a second game Thursday night against Gulliver Prep. The Raiders from Miami, FL, defeated Mountain View (Ga.) in a first round game Thursday, 6-2. The Cartersville/Gulliver Prep winner advances to the tournament semifinals Friday at 6pm against Oxford (MS). The loser will play in a consolation game Friday at 6pm against McEachern.

The Woodland girls and boys golf teams defeated Adairsville Wednesday at Barnsley Gardens. The Woodland girls won 146-166. Makayla Knuchel, Lauren Parramore, and Elizabeth Nycum led the Lady Cats. In the boys match, the Wildcats defeated Adairsville 181-198. Isaac Nycum and Jacob Petroski had the low scores for Woodland. In matches earlier this season, the Woodland girls have wins over Cass and South Paulding. The Woodland boys defeated Cass and lost to Rome and South Paulding. The Woodland golfers play again next Wednesday at Woodland Hills Golf Club against North Paulding.

WOODLAND 5, ROME 2 Garett Pope and Grayson Bagwell combined for a three-hitter to pave the way for a Woodland 5-2 sub-region win at Rome Wednesday night. The Wildcats scored three runs in the first two innings and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh after the Wolves had narrowed the lead to 3-1. Four of Woodland’s nine hits went for extra bases. Jacob Frye led the Wildcats’ attack with a 3-for-4 night. He scored twice and drove in a run on a triple and a pair of singles. Hunter Reaid, Brandon Allen (triple), and Mitchell Taylor each finished with a hit and one RBI. Grant Robinson and Trent Harrison both smacked doubles. Pope (5.1 IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 2K) picked up the pitching victory for Woodland. Bagwell (1.2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 3BB, 1K) earned a save. Woodland (2-6 overall, 1-4 in 7-AAAAA-A) entertains Rome (5-2, 1-1) Friday in the rubber game of the sub-region series at 6pm. NORTH OCONEE 4, CASS 0 The Cass bats were stymied again Wednesday night at LakePoint Park in Emerson as the Colonels lost a non-region game to North Oconee, 4-0. Cass managed only two hits in the contest, one night after going hitless against Griffin. North Oconee (3-5) scored a pair of runs in the second and added single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Titans pounded out 11 hits. North Oconee sophomore southpaw, Brad Stephenson, allowed only two hits and three walks in 6-2/3 innings. He struck out five. Josh Farmer recorded the final out for the Titans in the seventh inning. Evan Hinton (6 IP, 11H, 4R, 2ER, 1BB, 5K) suffered the complete game pitching loss for the Colonels. Cody Johnson singled in the third inning and Nathan Smith doubled in the seventh inning for the only Cass hits. Cass (3-4) plays a three-game, sub-region series with Rome next week. Monday and Friday the games are at Legion Field in Rome. Wednesday’s game will be at Cass. All three start times are 5:55pm.

The Cass soccer teams split matches at Paulding County Wednesday night in Dallas. The girls lost to the Lady Patriots 8-0 and the Colonels defeated the Patriots, 2-0. Jose Quinonez gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute and Gavin Smith made it 2-0 in the 70th minute. Both goals were unassisted. With the road victory, the Colonels improved to 4-1-1 for the season. The Patriots are now 2-6-1. The Paulding girls scored four goals in each half during their win over the visiting Lady Colonels. The Lady Patriots moved to 8-0 on the season. The Lady Colonels slipped to a 2-5-1 season mark. The Cass teams play at region rival Sequoyah Friday.

The Woodland boys and girls track teams competed in the Wolverine Invitational at Woodstock High School Saturday. The boys placed 5th out of 20 teams and the girls finished 13th. First place finishers for the boys were: Jamai Smith in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds and Thomas Jolly in the Pole Vault with a vault of 12 feet even. Also scoring in the meet: Shamus Thomas in the 100 meter dash, Jamai Smith in the 200 meter dash, Trever Knowles in the high jump, the 4 by 100m relay, 4 by 400m relay, and the 4 by 800m relay. Top finishers and scoring for the girls team were: Karson Norris in the high jump, Cheyenne Spinks, and Lindsay Scifers in the 3200 meter run, Skylar Chappell in the discus throw, Chaila Reliford in the long jump, Avery Mayweather in the shot put, and the 4 by 800 meter relay.

The Cartersville Hurricanes baseball team opens play in the annual Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson Thursday against the Montverde Academy (FL) Eagles at 3:35pm on Field 15. Some of the top high school baseball programs in the nation will participate in the event that runs through Saturday at LakePoint. Parkview (GA) is the defending champion and the Panthers are back to defend their 2015 title. Title top contenders include: 3rd-ranked Oxford (Miss) HS (5-1), 7th-ranked Buford (Ga.) HS (3-1), 20th-ranked Gulliver Prep (Miami, Fla.) HS (8-2) and the Canes who are ranked No. 26. The Adairsville boys soccer team won in dramatic style Tuesday night, defeating Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on the road in a penalty kicks shootout. The game was a scoreless draw through regulation time and two five minute overtimes, sending the region contest to a penalty kicks tie-breaker. Danny Carillo, Jesus Garcia, and Salvador Grimaldo Jr., all converted on their PK shootout attempts for the Tigers to escape with a 3-2 win. "B.J. Hardman had a tremendous game in goal," said Adairsville coach Kelly Abernathy. Hardman made eight saves in regulation and overtime, plus three dramatic saves in the shootout. "The core of the defense had an outstanding game as well," noted Abernathy. "Gideon Perez, Austin Barry, Ari Longmore, and Joseph Pacheco played most of the game, but we had several subs that solidified the defense throughout the night." Adairsville (6-1 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) took 20 shots on goal in regulation and overtime. "The offense deserves credit too," added Abernathy. "We were productive, offensively, and controlled play and possession for most of the game." The Tigers entertain Coahulla Creek Thursday night (March 10).

Emily Collum scored a hat trick to lead the undefeated Adairsville Lady Tigers to victory and Cartersville's Chloe Davis scored one goal in regulation and converted on a PK kick after regulation as both local girls' soccer teams won important region games Tuesday night. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, LFO 0 The Adairsville Lady Tigers shutout Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 6-0 on the road Tuesday night behind three goals by Emily Collum. Collum put Adairsville ahead 3-0 at halftime with goals in the 10th minute (assist from Kaitlyn Webster), 21st minute (assist by Aimee Pacheco), and 28th minute (assist from Hannah Worley). In the second half, Mac Stehenson scored in the 44th minute off a corner kick from Katie Lawhorn to make the score 4-0. Pacheco scored in the 58th minute for a 5-0 lead and Haley Pittman scored a goal in the 62nd minute for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (7-0 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) hosts Coahulla Creek on Thursday at 5:30pm. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 The Lady Canes went to overtime and penalty kicks Tuesday night before an outcome was reached, but Cartersville escaped with an important 2-1 Region 7-AAAA victory. Chloe Davis scored the Lady Canes’ goal in regulation off an assist from Marissa Mowry in the game’s 50th minute, but Southeast tied it with a goal in the waining minutes of regulation. With PKs knotted at 2-2, Davis converted to give the Lady Canes a 3-2 advantage on PKs and Cartersville keeper Abby Robinson stopped a pair of attempts to secure the region win. Cartersville (5-1 overall, 2-0 in 7-AAAA) hosts Pickens Friday (March 11) at 5:30pm.
